Great work by sammy actually!! its just a matter of time before we get the leaks....

I am looking forward to this like the rest of us. However we need to take into account that delays (ATT i897 Gingerbread) aren't necessarily Samsungs fault. Quite often it is the carrier that causes the delays. So for those that are on ATT for example may have to wait longer then the rest of the world. Hopefully this is not the case.

Actual news came from. ...
http://global.samsungtomorrow.com/?p=8894

This could still be 3 months away though, that's ages!!

Yup, Q1 is January to March. Who knows we might get it on the 31st of March

At least samsung is quicker than lg, it took them a whole year to update the optimius 2x from froyo to gingerbread. Really looking forward to ICS, hopefully it will land late January early February. I'm sure we'll have CM9 sometime in January.

+1. I was shocked when I read about the Gingerbread update for the O2X being released recently. I assumed all along it had Gingerbread. Shame on you, LG!

Speaking as someone who had to wait well over a year before my last phone *finally* got freaking Froyo (and was told it was never getting Gingerbread) this is a welcome and ambitious announcement. Here's to hoping Docomo can get on the same page as quickly as Samsung.

Looking forward to this - but I am still a noob enjoying all the custom roms the devs have to offer.

Yeah, that's ages, but be honest... do you REALLY need this update? I bet your phone works perfectly and you still would be absolutely happy even if ICS didn't exist yet.

Seeing as we're already getting leaks, I would be surprised if the official ROM for international users would take that long to come out.

Why do you think that? The current status rather clearly points to a february/march release.
Current leaks are unstable, so probably a month more development for decent stability, then comes a period of wider testing (all different carriers and Samsung sales companies in different countries), probably some certifications made in parallell as well. Now we're in end of january or later...
Then some bug fixes once again after these tests. And some additional tests of course after these fixes.
I cannot see any possibility for an official release before mid-february, probably a bit later in March.
But of course, the leaks in january used for wider tests might be pretty good for all-day use, so if you don't require official releases you don't have to wait that long.

What a clever way of "stealing" us 3 months...

Because its not like the devs on here that do these things on their free time - the developers at Samsung working on the port are paid to do so, its their job, and they have to work on it several hours a day, every day.
But I might be an optimist. In any case, I'm sure a good enough leak will come along sooner than expected that is beneficial to the devs.

Agree - my SGSII is rooted so I got rid of all bloat-ware.
It's fast and battery is good

They say Q1 now, but if we look back at the updates they have done before they relese a update, that breaks something, then pull it again work on it for a month or 3 before releasing it again...
But that have ofc more been a kies problem then a update problem. Can remember when i had the Galaxy S and that got the GB update, that left the users in download mode, when updating over kies...

Does this mean that the leaks are non-indicative of the actual update, and we will indeed get ICS launcher/TW5?

Samsung Galaxy S Getting Android 2.3 Gingerbread February,2011

GOOD NEWS! for Galaxy S owners, the Gingerbread man will be coming to Samsung Most popular smartphone (Galaxy S) Flag-ship.
Remeber, Earlier this Month, Samsung Mobile India Twitter feed tells the fact that the mobile will get Android 2.3 (Screenshot below), The company kept it short and simple with a brief tweet: "Yes we will get gingerbeard on GalaxyS." but no other info announced from the company about the update. This is a joke for sure.
My S has Eclair, till this time there is no official froyo upgrade available for my phone and samsung is going to release gingerbread the coming February?
Are we talking about Samsung or about the comedy channel?

This is the difference between porting (having to program the drivers for about everything) and having a native release (like HTC on N1).
Now that NexusS is in the hands of Google, we can expect faster release!

Froyo has been out since October/early November, officially released by Samsung. Blame your carrier if your not getting the update. Contrary to belief, Samsung is quicker than HTC when pushing out updates, it's just that HTC devices have a much larger userbase on XDA, hence the quicker porting/updating.
2.2.1 has been out officially since September as well on N1,

N1 is the base on wich they developped the update, don't you think it's normal it gets prior updates?
It is also pretty usual that all the "clones" of N1 will get theses updates pretty fast, since HTC only have to put their bloatware on it and it's pretty much done!
Thanks! Hope this is true.

Both of these are hardware dependant and both the Galaxy S doesn't have. The multiple camera support is for using with taking 3D pictures and/or recording 3D movies. And NFC is there so that android devices can attempt to get ahead of the iphone5 which is said to support it but these needs a dedicated chip.

Google can not give the gingerbread code out to companies until it has been officially released.
Meaning no company will have any advantage in the race for gingerbread.

I have had one problem with this phone since purchase in September. You need to try a custom rom with a kernel upgrade, not like there is any lag in stock JPU.
I don't get how so many people complain about this great device when it can be pimped out within 30 minutes.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Some Galaxy still don't have an official Froyo update yet. And the ones that do are still laggy. The 2.2.1 is finally a ROM that isn't laggy but its not official its a leak.
If Samsung comes out with Gingerbread they will screw it up. I'd rather have the community come up with a basic Gingerbread that works. And the community will do it long before Samsung does.
dude this is samsung, we all saw what happened with froyo and all the delays.
I have little hope for a febuary release, i say it's closer to june
2.2.1 is a revelation. I have put it on my galaxy s and its no longer laggy, really smooth, new market, lock screen wallpapers etc. Finally its transformed the phone into the powerhouse it always had the potential to be. I urge you all to get 2.2.1 ASAP!

Do you expect us to get official Gingerbread

After no rom leaks in the past few weeks after JPY I am starting to wonder will Samsung update our phones to gingerbread or leave us behind when Galaxy S 2 phone is announced next Month. I know gingerbread was just announced but usually roms leak out from Samsung regularly most probably so they can beta test
but no new roms is giving me bad vibes
i was thinking the same thing.. only new roms coming out (leaks) are 2.2 not even 2.2.1 ... i would think if they were working on gingerbread we should have seen a leaked rom by now. i have a feeling they are dumping for newer phones.
We wont get Ginger bread if we where samsung would have announced it by now to sell more phones
We will get it.
SGS will get Gingerbread ... Comfirmed by Samsung Mobile India on Twitter Account.
I do remember reading somewhere that Samsung claimed we'd be getting Gingerbread via twitter, if that's anything to go by... Q1 2011 was the 'expected' arrival for it too though I thought? :S like gingerbread isn't just a revision, such as 2.2 –> 2.2.1, its a whole buildbuild upgrade which may require more effort than expected (even supercurio and the cm team haven't made any significant galaxy s gingerbread improvements lately besides their initial work).

It Samsung wants to stay in this fight ... than they have to...It make no sense to release Galaxy S 2 and not providing 2.3 to 10 milions SGS Owner .... That would be wrong decision from my point of view...
i dont think, ppl will simply move to SGS2 for the sake of 2.3
seems likely to get 2.3 at this point, but it will take some time - they might also have killed some "leakers", we didn't get newer 2.2.1 builds either..
I don't care much for gingerbread i just want now a perfect 2.2.1 rom from samsung with no lag and gps like JM9.
I got the feeling we will , 10 million sold. Would be bad for their name not releasing. But also , i wouldnt be suprised if they dont release it.

Samsung has told Pocket-lint that it is unsure whether the latest version of Android, version 2.3, will be coming to the Samsung Galaxy S, following the announcement that its new flagship phone, the Samsung Nexus S, will be packing the new operating system when it launches later this month.
Rather than simply telling us whether it is or it isn’t, Samsung has told us:
“In case a new version of Android operating system is publicly announced and released, Samsung will review the possibility of implementation of such new version to the existing Samsung products with Android operating system (“Update”).
"Such a review will be based on various factors including, without limitation, the overall effect of such Update to Samsung products, the system requirements, the structural limitations, and the level of cooperation from the component suppliers and the software licensors”.

to me that means if we bring a better phone out called galaxy s2 we will not update the galaxy s because the new phone will all ready have the update installed so we can rip more people off
just found this online and it doesnt look good......... JK Shin, president of Samsung Mobile, has now gone on record saying that we'll get a new Galaxy S device at Mobile World Congress in February that'll feature Gingerbread, a dual-core processor
I _would_ be upset if there was no update after the initial Froyo - knowing that a lot better is available. Especially knowiing it would affect 10 million customers.
2.2.1 or 2.3 would not matter too much. It doesn't seem 2.3 offers a lot compared to 2.2. And perhaps the ext4-basedness of the Nexus S is problematic, for example for mass storage support.
It seems Samsung is pretty good at offering features of the next version in a previous incarnation. My 2.1 had the wifi AP - which belonged to 2.2.
Let's hope for some support. My primary hope would be lag fixes and after that ongoing security support.

But if we think about this 2.2.1 gave us a ota update feature.
would they really put this into the phone ( I can image it took a dev some time to get this to work for 10 million phones) if they had no intention of updating?!?!?!?1
Short: YES.
I'm pretty certain we'll see gingerbread..although it'll probably be a bit of a wait.
Now whether or not we ever see icecream....
That's probably a pipedream....
Well...maybe we won't get it officially..

Not keeping my hopes up that we will get 2.3, if we do its an added bonus. The next galaxy S is just a couple of months away from release so Sammy might make that a selling point..

Yes, ICS has support for Pressure Sensitive screens.
I don't understand why everyone thinks the Note will get ICS.
Its just some blog that says so...
They even have edited their post now:
Update : is not official confirmation from Samsung Korea (the only one who can give the full official) but is "a hypothesis" for the next updates. Only Samsung Korea will confirm the roadmap of aggironamenti.
I say, the Note does not get an Official ICS...
Its far more logical that the Note II will get ICS.

Wishful thinking maybe?
Because otherwise it's bad PR. Android devices which are at least six months old have always been updated.
Think about what Samsung needs to do if they put ICS on this Note.
They spend a lot of money on marketing the Note, and its just about to get released...
If they would put ICS on this Note, they either have to revise all the marketing material, or recreate the exact same software on ICS, including launcher etc.
Even the Italian blog mentions second quarter 2012 as a date for a possible Note update to ICS.
By that time the market is also ready for a Note II with ICS 4.5

If they don't update to ICS, Samsung will have a lot of negative media about not supporting there brand new flagship devices. Which will result in a lot more of a loss than the gain. Plus they have to update TW to ICS anyway, they might as well put a bit of more effort and make it work for Note. And ICS can act as an incentive for newer purchases, people always like forward to buy newest Android OS. Galaxy S2 came out and still they are providing updates for Galaxy, why do you think that happens?

You clearly dont know what the hell you are talking about here!
Google wants that all manufactures update to ICS because of fragmentation. Google will update once a year like Apple!
The Note II maybe not coming at all if this thing does not sell. So they will update this Note to ICS. Every new phone you buy from Sammy will get 18 months of Support So that means ICS will come to the Note!
Mark my words ! Of Course they will not confirm this this quick because of the galaxy Nexus. It will interfear the sales of that phone!

Galaxy S II ICS Update Rolls Out Today in Select Countries

See at source:
http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/12/2...-4-0-update-korea-today-sweden-poland-hungary
"As promised, Samsung is finally rolling out Android 4.0 to Galaxy S II users in South Korea today, and has also announced the first details of European availablity. Poland, Sweden, and Hungary will also be getting the update today, with more countries on the way — and the UK could be one of the next up. A tweet from Brendan Arndt of UK carrier Three has revealed that their final build of Ice Cream Sandwich is currently undergoing internal testing."
I'm sure all of you know what this means for us Note users. Can't be much longer now before we see ICS. Looks like Samsung might make good on its estimate for ICS delivery.
Taken from Twitter
Well March 10 came and went without the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Galaxy S II, but hey what’s a few extra days? If you remember, we posted that earlier today a tweet was pulled by SK Telecom announcing that ICS would arrive on March 13. It was pulled because Samsung wanted to make the official announcement, which they just did via Twitter and Facebook. Here’s what they said on Facebook:
We’re thrilled to announce that Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be served to GALAXY S II users in the European countries including Poland, Hungary and Sweden, as well as Korea today, and gradually roll out to other markets.
ICS for GALAXY Note, GALAXY S II LTE, GALAXY Tab 8.9 and 10.1 will follow soon.
In addition, we’ll also offer Android 2.3 Gingerbread firmware upgrades for GALAXY S, GALAXY Tab 7″, GALAXY S Plus, GALAXY S SCL (Super Clear LCD) and GALAXY W from end March. The firmware upgrades for GALAXY S, for example, include Face Unlock, Snapshot, Photo Editor, and others.
The availability and scheduling of the software update and specific models upgradeable to Android 4.0 will vary by market and wireless carriers’ requirements.
I would expect to see the Galaxy Note and others to get ICS by May. If you’re in the U.S., you’re probably wondering when ICS will make its way stateside. Unfortunately I don’t have any confidence that we will get a taste until at least the Summer.
Also the Gingerbread firmware update for the Galaxy S, Galaxy Tab, etc. is quite interesting in that Face Unlock and Photo Editor will make it’s way to these devices. It’s unlikely these devices will ever see ICS, but at least Samsung is trying to bring some its features to these devices.
Source - TalkAndroid
ICS in the USA is at the hands of the CARRIERS. I wouldn't count on Verizon or AT&T releasing it unless it snows in July LOL.
Another reason to buy full price, international versions. Most will get any updates way before (if ever) a carrier branded version.
Heck, I got my note in late December and have had 3 updates (GB). The carrier notes have had how many updates? Not sure, but are they even on 2.3.6?

Cosmetically different.
Does not seem to add much in terms of function for most users.
Imilka's asop is something worth trying out. It has somebugs but not a big issue. However still find GB roms to be better and faster.

New browser and hardware acceleration alone makes me want ics, not to mention the other features.
Shame it's got touchwiz all over it.

This is new to me! I´ve read several posts about GB being more stable etc, but faster? I just tried one ICS ROM for testing purposes, and hell, Nova launcher on ICS is FAR beyond every launcher on GB (even stock TW) when it comes to speed...

Just wait for imilka to get his hands on it.
I really dont understand what makes Samsung take so long for Note, if they have already done with SII. My opinion: except the S Pen app remaining things on Note are similar to SII. Porting S Pen should not take much time.

HTC has only pushed 4.2 to the One, a 2013 flagship, and the S4, Samsung's latest 2013 flagship also has 4.2 so they actually aren't behind in any way. AFAIK the same goes for Sony.
Update postponed till xmas

Agreed. HTC's 2013 "flagship" and savior device shipped with 4.1 and is still in the process of getting 4.2. There are more Google-caused issues in 4.2 than there are in 4.1 so it’s great it has new features everyone wants but the same people *****ing about not having it will be the first to ***** if battery life is less, BT is borked, or if anything is inferior to 4.1. And if Samsung released a rushed and buggy N2 4.2 update those same people would be up in arms. 4.1>4.2 isn't a major update and 4.1 isn't broken.

Did you read the article? It looks like it was written by a kid.
The upcoming Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean for both Samsung Galaxy S3 & Galaxy Note 2 is reported to be delayed again and scheduled not earlier than November 2013. Factors such as the Galaxy S4 sales, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and K Build release date affected the update release date. There's no source for the information other than "is reported." And does anyone here think Samsung, a company with a $12B R&D budget, is so single threaded or low on resources that something like soft SGS4 sales or doing multiple updates across different devices at the same time is going to tax them? The SGS4's been on the market for four months and punishing the SGS3 or N2 by stalling their update to 4.2 isn't going to help or hurt its sales. Outside XDA people don’t even know what version of Android their running. At most, they know they know “Jelly Bean” is the latest and 4.1 is JB. HTC didn't think launching their new flagship on 4.1 was going to hurt sales and it took them four months to bring it up to 4.2. And since Samsung never officially said when existing 4.1 devices would be brought up to 4.2 there isn't a delay. Something that's never been announced can't be delayed.
And as for the Note 8 getting it first, that makes total sense. It uses a phone vs. tablet UI similar to the N2 but sells in probably 1/10 the volume. If something's broken or needs trouble shooting in customer’s hands it's better to test it on a smaller audience. 4.2 hasn't been used with S Pen, S Note, or an inductive display before and doing so adds a lot of extra code. I'm fine with Note 8 users being the Guinea pigs because my N2 runs perfectly on 4.1.
But do continue to rant and run this thread up to dozens of pages like the other update threads. I'm sure it'll make the update come faster.
Owners of S3 and Note 2 can surely expect the Android 4.2.2 update, but it requires some patience as the maker struggles with Galaxy S4 sales and new Android versions.

The maker "struggles"??? What, they only make 10 billions instead of 12?? What about all the customers that they are pissing off? Do they think this will help future sales? I for one will start looking where the grass is greener.

And where would that be? HTC? One S owners would disagree the grass is greener. Motorola? Those that bought phones in late-2011 with the promise (in writing) from Motorola they'd receive it and then didn't don't think their grass is any greener. LG and Sony perhaps? There track records are worse than Samsung's.
Want instant updates? Buy a Nexus. Even the GE versions of the One and SGS4 are dependent on HTC and Samsung so won't get updates as fast as a Nexus. Buying a phone with an overlay (which everyone here did) means you wait for updates. If people didn't know that upfront it's their own fault.
And again, whining amongst yourselves here in three different threads on the same subject isn't going to make an update come any faster.

All they're doing is generating more traffic to sammobile because they ALWAYS get rumors right
(That's sarcasm for anyone not getting it.)

Hey, everyone here has a right to their opinion and feelings about updates. I mostly stay out of update threads. I pop up occasionally becaue people new to XDA or trying to see if a certain phone's worthwhile could get the wrong impression when people go off on Samsung about updates. In my opinion they're no worse than others and over this past year seem to be pushing more general updates out then they have been. But in truth they all pretty much suck and updates clearly aren't a priority. I'd expect starting with the X-Phone, now that Motorla's owned by Google, Motorola should probably lead the pack. We'll have to wait and see.
Maybe someone could explain to me if Samsung sucks so much w/ updates, which mythical company we're talking about that has started rolling out 4.2.2 for it's 2012 flagship? FFS One's just getting 4.2.2 and that came out with S4.
And once 4.2.2 is out more whining threads will be out re: battery life and downgrading to 4.1.2. I'm good with 4.1.2 custom ROMs, what exactly are people missing out on 4.2.2? Lockscreen widgets? Really? Is it worth all this persistent whining?

Shhh. They're all mostly 16yo and this is a big thing for them. Don't try to understand why.
Back when my S3 was on ICS and we were waiting for JB, I asked all the complainers what feature they were missing. One bloke said he was losing business because he didn't have Google Now! (He was serious too)
In a world where flashing a new ROM every second day makes sense, you HAVE to have the latest version of stuff. You just do. The End.
Oh yeah another bastard thread about people moaning because we don't have 4.2.2
Yes im going to shout
WHY ON EARTH WOULD THEY DROP THIS UPDATE BEFORE THE NOTE 3 IS RELEASED AND NOBODY KNOWS WHAT THE NOTE 3 WILL BE RUNNING.
Get it in your heads shut up and wait and stop clogging this forum up with crap every time a phone gets an update. Ffs

bad news indeed, but i'm good on 4.1.2
When (not if) we get the 4.2 update, I suggest eager fans divide it in half to get two updates --> 4.2 / 2 = 2.1
With those two 2.1 updates, use one right away, then save the second for when u feel the need for additional updates later.
Hit thanks if this sounds like a viable option
