This is a joke for sure.
My S has Eclair, till this time there is no official froyo upgrade available for my phone and samsung is going to release gingerbread the coming February?
Are we talking about Samsung or about the comedy channel?

This is the difference between porting (having to program the drivers for about everything) and having a native release (like HTC on N1).
Now that NexusS is in the hands of Google, we can expect faster release!

Froyo has been out since October/early November, officially released by Samsung. Blame your carrier if your not getting the update. Contrary to belief, Samsung is quicker than HTC when pushing out updates, it's just that HTC devices have a much larger userbase on XDA, hence the quicker porting/updating.

2.2.1 has been out officially since September as well on N1,

N1 is the base on wich they developped the update, don't you think it's normal it gets prior updates?
It is also pretty usual that all the "clones" of N1 will get theses updates pretty fast, since HTC only have to put their bloatware on it and it's pretty much done!

Thanks! Hope this is true.

Is this website a reputable source?

2.3 will come officialy probably by the time the phone is phased out.. not all countries have 2.2 yet.

err i will believe when i see leaked firmware of 2.3. Then it shows that they are truly working for a 2.3 release

Both of these are hardware dependant and both the Galaxy S doesn't have. The multiple camera support is for using with taking 3D pictures and/or recording 3D movies. And NFC is there so that android devices can attempt to get ahead of the iphone5 which is said to support it but these needs a dedicated chip.

Seriously, the Nexus S is nearly identical to the Galaxy S, and it takes them this long?

takes them how long? the nexus s was released yesterday.
Google can not give the gingerbread code out to companies until it has been officially released.
Meaning no company will have any advantage in the race for gingerbread.
Only advantage samsung has, is gingerbread was built using their hardware

Wait and see
well the recent froyo release to Bell i9000m owners did some damage to many peoples internal SD cards. Wonder what gingerbread will do to them...(melt them!)
Ah well, God knows I will try anything to get this device to function properly - I really do love it - but cant stand the issues it has.

I have had one problem with this phone since purchase in September. You need to try a custom rom with a kernel upgrade, not like there is any lag in stock JPU.
I don't get how so many people complain about this great device when it can be pimped out within 30 minutes.

Some Galaxy still don't have an official Froyo update yet. And the ones that do are still laggy. The 2.2.1 is finally a ROM that isn't laggy but its not official its a leak.
If Samsung comes out with Gingerbread they will screw it up. I'd rather have the community come up with a basic Gingerbread that works. And the community will do it long before Samsung does.

dude this is samsung, we all saw what happened with froyo and all the delays.
I have little hope for a febuary release, i say it's closer to june

2.2.1 is a revelation. I have put it on my galaxy s and its no longer laggy, really smooth, new market, lock screen wallpapers etc. Finally its transformed the phone into the powerhouse it always had the potential to be. I urge you all to get 2.2.1 ASAP!

Samsung Galaxy S and Samsug Galaxy Tab gets Gingerbread. (No info about other devices.)
It's possible.... especially with no timeframe, it is very possible. If you, hmm, catch my drift.
yea if we live in a magical land filled with roads of chocolate and gumdrops......
And where a Samsung-branded magical dragon delivers the updates to your phone personally, and when Samsung misses a deadline the dragon cries.... and his tears turn into Jellybeans! And those Jelly beans cure cancer.... err, I think I've gone a bit too far.
i'm guessing that samsung is going to release both 2.2 and 2.3 at the same time. everyone will have to listen to KSAM radio to get the update....

this sounds very plausible because the tab is just an oversize galaxy S, and the new phone they're releasing for ATT looks just like the vibrant. If those two devices gets gingerbread, it wouldn't be long until someone port it or samsung actually releasing it for the vibrant too. Just have to wait and see. This would be better than getting 2.2.
well me i would be more inclined to believe that one of the devs like team whiskey, eugene will have gingerbread before samsung or tmo delivers on all their broken promises.
Frankly I do not care at all, I see Froyo as a HTC upgrade, one that every HTC phone needs and should have. It really woke the hell out of my HTC Android phones up!
Now with the Vibrant? NONE of the leaks have made my phone any faster, in fact the last 2.1 I used was a lot more stable than the best 2.2 rom I have used so far (and I have used quite a few of them). The only advantage I have seen is much better GPS locks and faster internet speeds with the JL series modem files (outside only, worse than the 2.1 modems inside a building) and much better reception overall than the 2.1 modems.
So IMO Froyo update will only be a modem/gps/reception update, no real speed or any other advantage here.
Now gingerbread will be to us what Froyo is to the HTC devices, if we will get it at all that is

It is definitely possible that official 2.2.1 Froyo is optimized for the hummingbird (i also heard that it may have a newer file system), thus giving the SGS the same boosts as snapdragon devices... wishful thinking of course...
so possibly they will merge parts of 2.2.1 with 2.3 giving us a taste of both in the near future possibly before 2012
The tab needs 3.0 not 2.3...

Anything less is fAIL, like it is now.
I do not really give a damn anymore. 2.3 would be really nice, but with the Roms from EB, TW, Master, Jellete, I could go on ...all these guys have done great things in the rom world. I have modded and tweaked this phone so it now performs like supped up BENZ.......... really only S2 will move me away from this phone. all this worry over Samsung delivering...... is just "old lady wring your hands complaining" ....like I said who really cares at this point?

Do you expect us to get official Gingerbread

After no rom leaks in the past few weeks after JPY I am starting to wonder will Samsung update our phones to gingerbread or leave us behind when Galaxy S 2 phone is announced next Month. I know gingerbread was just announced but usually roms leak out from Samsung regularly most probably so they can beta test
but no new roms is giving me bad vibes
i was thinking the same thing.. only new roms coming out (leaks) are 2.2 not even 2.2.1 ... i would think if they were working on gingerbread we should have seen a leaked rom by now. i have a feeling they are dumping for newer phones.
We wont get Ginger bread if we where samsung would have announced it by now to sell more phones
We will get it.
SGS will get Gingerbread ... Comfirmed by Samsung Mobile India on Twitter Account.
I do remember reading somewhere that Samsung claimed we'd be getting Gingerbread via twitter, if that's anything to go by... Q1 2011 was the 'expected' arrival for it too though I thought? :S like gingerbread isn't just a revision, such as 2.2 –> 2.2.1, its a whole buildbuild upgrade which may require more effort than expected (even supercurio and the cm team haven't made any significant galaxy s gingerbread improvements lately besides their initial work).

At a guess yes and a probable for 3 but that will depend upon hardware .

It Samsung wants to stay in this fight ... than they have to...It make no sense to release Galaxy S 2 and not providing 2.3 to 10 milions SGS Owner .... That would be wrong decision from my point of view...
i dont think, ppl will simply move to SGS2 for the sake of 2.3
seems likely to get 2.3 at this point, but it will take some time - they might also have killed some "leakers", we didn't get newer 2.2.1 builds either..
I don't care much for gingerbread i just want now a perfect 2.2.1 rom from samsung with no lag and gps like JM9.
I got the feeling we will , 10 million sold. Would be bad for their name not releasing. But also , i wouldnt be suprised if they dont release it.

Samsung has told Pocket-lint that it is unsure whether the latest version of Android, version 2.3, will be coming to the Samsung Galaxy S, following the announcement that its new flagship phone, the Samsung Nexus S, will be packing the new operating system when it launches later this month.
Rather than simply telling us whether it is or it isn’t, Samsung has told us:
“In case a new version of Android operating system is publicly announced and released, Samsung will review the possibility of implementation of such new version to the existing Samsung products with Android operating system (“Update”).
"Such a review will be based on various factors including, without limitation, the overall effect of such Update to Samsung products, the system requirements, the structural limitations, and the level of cooperation from the component suppliers and the software licensors”.

to me that means if we bring a better phone out called galaxy s2 we will not update the galaxy s because the new phone will all ready have the update installed so we can rip more people off
just found this online and it doesnt look good......... JK Shin, president of Samsung Mobile, has now gone on record saying that we'll get a new Galaxy S device at Mobile World Congress in February that'll feature Gingerbread, a dual-core processor
I _would_ be upset if there was no update after the initial Froyo - knowing that a lot better is available. Especially knowiing it would affect 10 million customers.
2.2.1 or 2.3 would not matter too much. It doesn't seem 2.3 offers a lot compared to 2.2. And perhaps the ext4-basedness of the Nexus S is problematic, for example for mass storage support.
It seems Samsung is pretty good at offering features of the next version in a previous incarnation. My 2.1 had the wifi AP - which belonged to 2.2.
Let's hope for some support. My primary hope would be lag fixes and after that ongoing security support.

Short: YES.

Galaxy S to get 2.3 start of Q2?

http://phandroid.com/2011/01/22/rum...axy-tab-to-get-gingerbread-beginning-of-q211/
It's a rumor I'd like to believe. The overseas Galaxy S has had 2.2 for a while now, and it's believable that after so many months, they might get 2.3. This works great for us because...
1- we might get it
2- if we don't, someone could use the i9000 code to make a copy for the Vibrant.
With this whole froyo mess, I see Samsung getting us 2.3 eventually just to appease us and bring the best out of our hardware (optimization for Hummingbird). If they can pull 2.3 for us sometime by the end of Q2/start of Q3- It would redeem them for the froyo debacle.
Honeycomb/Ice Cream, whichever, I just don't see us getting officially.
Edit: nm

SamFirmwares, the originator of this rumor, is a site that has gotten us a lot of Froyo leaked roms. I don't think they would say this unless they know theres a GB rom out there that they are trying to get their hands on.
After flashing from stock 2.1 to Axura 2.2.7.1 I am enjoying a 2.2 ROM. I cannot wait until 2.3 gets out and the devs here play with it. The updates in it look promising, and the power management should definitely push the stellar battery life from these awesome ROMs.
Later than i9000
If history is any indication, we'll get Gingerbread when Honey Comb has been out for at least 3 weeks and thousands of hate tweets have been made.
I wouldn't hold my breath on it.

That would.be quite incredible since the Vibrant 4G is set to launch next month with Froyo. Their new flagship phone launches with Froyo and then the older, nearly identical version gets Gingerbread? I doubt we will ever see Android 2.3 on the original Vibrant. 1 year is an eternity in the world of Android smart-phones. There is so much competition and the pace is so fast that manufacturers will opt to put their best & brightest efforts into optimizing code for upcoming devices.
For example, the Motorola Atrix probably has a lot of manufacturers trying to figure out how they can make their devices that come after it stand out.
The only thing the Vibrant has going for it is that it shares most of its innards with 2 other phones.

To the person who posted scores, Quadrant sucks, no use to test for real life performance. And the vibrant is not really that cheap feeling, would you rather have a few scratches on the backplate or a dent that cannot be replaced?
But sure, anything above 2.2 will probably be mostly theme overhauls for android, maybe a few optimizations for the hummingbird in 2.3 but nothing above that most likely.
for me froyo is the end of the vibrant. my only hope is the devs here who are working on it.

read that, then read some of the comments.
"Everyone, this is possible. Keep in mind, they could be talking about Galaxy S, not the American Variants, or they could be. Two possible scenario:
One: They are talking about the European Galaxy S(has had 2.2 for a while, just got 2.2.1)
Two: It could mean 2.3 could finally be built and ready for carriers to add their bloat and send off as OTA(or Kies*shivers*)Remember, Froyo for the Galaxy S in the states has been ready for months now, it has been the carriers, not Samsung."
I still think the US Galaxy S phones will get at least the update to Gingerbread, at least sometime in the first half of the year. I think that'll be the last update the phones get though.

It's ridiculous that I should be appeased by a 2.3 release 3-6 months after it's been released by Google. I want a new release on the same day that Google releases a new version and I want it from Google. Manufacturers can tweak and release it whenever they want to. At this point, I don't care. But Google needs to fix this. Make every manufacturer provide all the device drivers for all phones sold in the past 2 years available for every release and we should be able to get the latest Google experience for our phones.
The fact that 2.3 is not yet available for Nexus One shows that Google needs to spend some time making this their top priority.
I think a long as the carriers push two year contracts they should support the phone that long.

ICS and i9000 - a little history

I'm not going to ask if Samsung would relase ICS for i9000. I'll just refresh my memory with a little bit of history.
December 6th 2010 - SDK 2.3
December 17th 2010 - The source code 2.3
February 13th 2011 - SGS2 announced
February 25th 2011 - 2.3 OTA for N1 and NS
April 16th 2011 - 2.3 "OTA" for SGS1 (5+ months after 2.3 SDK came out).
So, if the history repeats itself, we won't get 4.0 before April of 2012th, if ever. More possible scenario would be SGS2 is getting 4.0 in April, and SGS1 stays on 2.3 due to "memory problems".
Anyone remembers 1st Samsung Galaxy (i7500?). It received 1.6 six months after Donut SDK came out and stayed on 1.6 due to memory problems ...
I'll be buying SGS2 HD LTE soon anyway.. can't resist
I to do not think we'll get it from Samsung but do hope CM hooks us up with CM9 soon after source code is out.

Yeah, but don't forget Samsung can fool us with their launcher that "will probably require more RAM than available", just like Sense needed to much RAM on HTC Desire and Desire never got official 2.3, although Nexus One will probably go even to 4.0.
Btw. Nexus S received official 2.3 OTA the same day as N1, on 23 February 2011, so we can expect CM8 much before that, I'm just hoping for GPU enabled browser in ICS, only thing that keeps me from CM7 now.

As i know there wasnt problem with RAM (desire has full 512MB) but with ROM, because new sense was too big for desire memory, thats why desire got old sense. If nexus s gets ICS and sgs dont, i will never ever buy another android phone (i had four of them, and i've been ****ed every time from htc and samsung), because i'm not money printing machine to buy new phone every year if i want to use new upgraded OS.
Do you realize that sgs is "old" as iPhone 4 and as you can see iPhone 4 already got iOS5 (even 3GS got iOS5 and that **** is older than nexus one) and will get iOS6, and i must to spend another 550-600 euros to buy new phone that will be abandoned after one year. Some will say that sgs dont have enough memory but i dont give a fu.k for that, they need to find a way to make things work, because apple can.
if SGS will dont get a ICS, I will be very sad, bcz Desire HD will get it... damn
There is no reason for SGS not to get it if Nexus S is getting it. It's same freaking phone for most part. Unless Samsung desides to f... us on this one.

but there is already a working stable ICS port
so, if DEV were able to port the ICS to the Nexus S
they can definitely do the same for the SGS1
just get a good gang of DEVs to start cracking on it, it really just depends how motivated or not are the DEVs using SGS1
isc theme port i think mostly, not much can be doune wo aosp sources thats why cm guys are holding for that source release

I hate ports, cm7 still isnt good enough as stock samsung gb (used it few times), ok its faster but thats that, only benefit. I gave money to samsung not to devs (dont want to be disrespectfull) in turn i expect software updates. Many people satisfies with ports but we need to demand from oems to update our expencive phones.

Is Gingerbread finally coming to the G3?

Samsung is reportedly going to upgrade its Galaxy series of smartphones to Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform by the end of the year. The Mobile Indian quotes a Samsung executive as saying the upgrade should be available within six to eight weeks from now. According to the Samsung executive, the Gingerbread update will be rolled out for entire Galaxy series of smartphones. The development comes days after LG announced Gingerbread update (Android 2.3)for its Optimus smartphones. Sony Ericsson also started rolling out Android 2.3.4 update for its Xperia-range of smartphones.

What do you think? Will our G3 be in the list of phones getting GB?
Hope so.If we will get update it will roll out after new year in february or something. But if we get it it would be realy good

Yeah i think it will come. But i also think that CM7 is better;p
i doubt it. still hope it will come but why would they come back at their decision to not roll out GB for the g3?
still crossing fingers though.

Because htc and sony did it...
I hope so but I think that phone is too short of everything to work smoothly.
The phone could easily run gingerbread and Samsung isn't really doing it for the customers anyway. It's doing it because the optimus and xperia range of phones are all being upgraded to gingerbread and Samsung doesn't want to look like they don't care about their customers.
Well I believe that history is repeating itself
When Samsung was going to release the 2.3 update for galaxy s and other at that time it released the froyo update for us. It may be that now ICS is coming up so they want to release an update here just for the sake of name OHH WE HAVE I UPDATE FOR EVERYONE!!
let the hopes never die my friendsssss

Edit : Samsung Quotes....
Samsung is going to ensure that all Android 2.2 Froyo running smartphones — Galaxy Fit, Galaxy Pop, and Galaxy Mini will get the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update before the end of this year. Apparently Samsung aims that all Android smartphones in India should run Gingerbread update

our G3 can easily run gingerbread and it will be smoother than froyo. phones with less specs are running GB
if the android os itself would be so demanding then phones wouldnt be able to handle apps on top of it.
g3 would probably be able to run icecream sandwich too but we will never be able to get it officialy.
mehh..
I have no doubt about g3 handling gingerbread, have seem the current CM7 port run on it.
but since the statement was made by an Indian Samsung executive, and clearly mentioned the newer mid-range (pop, fit and mini) that came out with the 2.2 out of the box, I am afraid samsung might decide to forget about the g3's which seem to be discontinued in the indian market, as this is clearly a strategy to sell more mid-range phones to the indian consumers, what with the launch of icecream sandwich, froyo would seem too outdated out of the box unless an update was promised.
Well no harm in remaining hopeful, but i am still taking this with a pinch of salt.
Dont think that gingerbread is going to come.... froyo update took much longer to come than promised and if gingerbread is going to come, it'll probably b very late
I believe Samsung will only release gingerbread to the galaxy phones that are currently being sold (tab, ace, mini and such), not to the old ones (3, 5...).
But even so, maybe it is still of some use if developers can put their hands on some drivers for hardware in those models that were also used on the old ones.
Does this mean we will get touchwiz 4.0? It is so much better than the crappy one we have and it's a lot faster and hardly any lag.
