Nvidia to release ICS binaries and drivers for Tegra 2 and 3 devices early next year - Atrix 4G General

There you have it folks, sit tight and wait for Nvidia. Once we have all the required drivers, we are set I hope this settles everyone down.
Please let me know if this thread is in the wrong place, but i think it's best in General (also makes a nice change from MIUI begging )
NVIDIA has been working with Google and Motorola to provide the open source community with the required drivers and other binary code to build full Android OS images for the Tegra 2 powered "Motorola Xoom". We expect Google to make those components available as part of the Android Open Source Project soon.
In addition, NVIDIA is working on a full release of Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) for our Tegra 2 Dual Core and Tegra 3 Quad Core reference devices to be made available early next year. This release package will comprise of binary code, drivers developed on our reference platforms and any patches necessary to ensure stability & performance with ICS. We hope the open source community can leverage this release for their work on all Tegra devices.

Couldn't believe it at first! I checked here to confirm it was true but there was no thread, so i decided to share the good news! I was worrying that our device was being forgotten about, but i guess the real fun starts early 2012!

Hooray!

Awesome news! I'm gonna have this phone for at least another 18 months, so this is very encouraging!

Also, IF Moto release ICS with blur and without webtop, would you go for it? I personally would, but i know some of you people love webtop.

I think you are partially right, but as you said, the drivers are for the Xoom and every device has unique drivers. It would probably be too difficult and time consuming to use/hack the Xoom's drivers for the Atrix and everything will not be the same as having the actual Atrix files.

Hmm... I figured using xoom.Drivers would make it easy. What about the g2x? Its a phone which may eliminate hassles, with nearly the same specs, save for it not being moto.

Atrix ICS

I know its early but has anyone heard anything about getting an official ICS on the Atrix?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
not as of yet but there's an awesone ICS theme on the market that works perfectly over CM ¬B^¬N.
This was discussed in depth in several different threads go here http://www.motorola.com/blog/2011/10/24/ice-cream-and-bootloaders-and-motorola-–-oh-my/. Most likely it will not recieve ics but click the link and keep checking it. Or if u dont feel like clicking it heres what it says.. A note about Ice Cream Sandwich: We are planning to upgrade DROID RAZR™ by Motorola, Motorola RAZR™, Motorola XOOM™ and DROID BIONIC™ by Motorola to Ice Cream Sandwich. We will provide more precise guidance on timing after post-public push of Ice Cream Sandwich by Google, as well as any possible additions to this list of devices
I dont understand why the atrix shouldnt get the 4.0 update when we have great top shelf specs but i bet the sensation will get it and we have the same processor speed but the atrix has more ram so were more then capable of running 4.0 but i guess because the atrix 2 is out thats a shame will we get it with cyanogen tho?
Yes we will get it with cm9 its an officially cyanogenmod supported device but the atrix 2 kay not even get it. But both might as well not anytime soon though. They want too release new devices with ics so people will buy them and they make more money. They dont make money updating current phones too ics
Still no GB here in UK & I doubt it ever will - So no chance ICS.
Motorola are too lazy & want you to buy a new phone with each software update - So I am gonna do that - I'm getting the Galaxy Nexus. Stuff moto
I don't think most of us are too concerned about an "official" ICS from Moto..but rather getting a port of some sort.
1. Wrong section.
2. There are many threads about this already.
3. Please view motorola's official website about upgrades for future reference.
4. Motorola only stated that 4 devices, excluding Atrix 4G and Atrix 2 will get ICS but did also mentioned that it is possible that other devices MIGHT be added to this list.
5. CM9 can get us a port but the drivers will not be optimized for ICS as Motorola has to optimize them for ICE first. Therefore, even if we get a ported version it won't work at it's full potential.
6. Please close this thread.
7. Happy Halloween.

Starting with IceCreamSandwich, the Android Open-Source Project can't be used from pure source code only, and requires additional hardware-related proprietary libraries to run, specifically for hardware graphics acceleration.
Official binaries for Nexus S, Nexus S 4G, Galaxy Nexus, and PandaBoard can be downloaded from Google's Nexus driver page, which add access to additional hardware capabilities with non-Open-Source code.
There are no official binaries for Nexus One, ADP2 or ADP1.
So, unless there's an official ICS release for the Atrix, it looks like we may be missing out on the default hardware acceleration. Thank god my upgrade comes up in Feb so I can get off this device and onto a Nexus device.

thats just another way of saying they dont support gfx drivers in the stock AOSP for other devices - nvidia still provides those for the tegra2, so it should sitll be possible to get hw acceleration on the atrix
its a shame that so many are forced to ditch perfectly capable hardware, simply because of software limitations. that is my initial reaction to the news in this thread.
Additionally, considering the new system for hardware acceleration, how could google release binaries for anything except their AOSP devices? Binaries for Tegra, or any other chipset manufacturer, will have to be made in conjunction with the manufacturer.
Not exactly good news for the Tegra; a very capable, very abandoned, hardware platform. Really didn't want to declare this device dead before its time as I've followed the Tegra since its earliest concepts. If the tegra doesn't get ICS i don't see how it the Kal El will even make a splash.

Motorola announced ICS is coming to the Xoom which is a tegra device
Tegra will get ICS from the LG 2X and we'll probably get a port from there. That's the least of the worries.
Many additional drivers will also be needed such as GPS, FP, possibly Bluetooth and wifi...etc
Plus, no official release will, if true, means many bugs and hiccups. That's what I've been saying all along here in the ICS jerking threads.

Xoom uses a different Tegra 2 SoC than the Atrix. Our best chances come from G2X, Photon, and Droid 2X. Xoom uses Tegra 250 T20 whereas smartphones use Tegra 250 AP20H. Even then, it's going to be a hack-up job since they aren't the same devices. It will definitely not run as well as if we had an official ICS release.
EDIT: The reason why is that the driver + proprietary libraries needed for hardware acceleration are built for a specific kernel. We don't share kernels with those devices regardless of how similar the devices are. They'd have to compare the 2 different kernels (a 2.3.4 vs a 4.0.1 mind you) and try and merge in the differences necessary to get hardware acceleration working. All in all, it will be the Atrix running on a hacked up gingerbread kernel and drivers trying to run ICS.
Actually, they should be able to hack together and compile a ICS kernel with a mix of GB and ICS drivers. I've done it before for GB on the HTC aria.

I did say that. But the problem is that it just that, a hacked together kernel and gpu driver. radio, wifi, bluetooth, etc. will still be on GB drivers. It would never run as well as if we had native ICS drivers and kernel.

CyanogenMod 9!

It's official! CyanogenMod 9 is coming to the eeePad Transformer!
CM 9 Progress Update
We’ve been hard at work on CM9 since Google released Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) into the wild last month, and things are slowly starting to come together. Google did a great job with ICS and added some really awesome features which in some cases replace or deprecate functionality that we had in CM7, so we are reevaluating all of our customizations. A number of devices are already up and running with CM9, and the focus is currently on getting as many devices ready as we can. The first devices (besides the Nexus S, which you can already get from Koush’s section on ROM Manager) that we’ll have ready will mostly likely be devices based on OMAP4, MSM8660/7X30, and Exynos. We also have some Tegra2 tablets in the pipeline such as the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Asus Transformer. Our goal is to provide continued support to all CM7 devices back to the QSD8250 series of devices such as the Nexus One. I don’t want to make any promises at this time, but that is the plan. And sorry Droid1 owners, we’re dropping support for you. Time to upgrade
There are a number of challenges that we are up against. Google has made some pretty major changes to the Android framework that break compatibility with older proprietary camera and graphics drivers in order to achieve some pretty insane performance, but I am confident that the team will be able to overcome these issues like we have in the past.
For those of you who like to build CM from source yourself, you probably know that the spin-up time when starting a CM7 build is absurdly long due to the high number of devices in our repository. Koush and Arcee have put together a solution to this problem that adds new devices on-demand to your local repository, saving on both bandwidth and the long startup time. Some other great enhancements are coming too, like a completely overhauled music app, a new file manager, and a new launcher based on stock 4.0.
If you have a Nexus S, you can check out the code and build for yourself today. More devices are on the way, and I’ll send out these status updates as we make more progress

It'll be interesting to see what the difference is. CM is usually better than stock firmware sure so being as lean and cut-back as possible while still adding in extremely useful features.
Asus have done a great job of keeping their firmware bloat-free though, so it may not be too different, performance-wise. The biggest advantage will probably come from extended support. Asus probably won't upgrade the TF101 past 4.0 - having CM pretty much ensures that it will get every version of Android in the future so long as somebody is interested in getting it running.

A lot of the "bloat" Asus has added is incredibly useful. Polaris Office is really nice, and unavailable if Asus didn't include it. Same with Supernote, which is pretty good for free. Splashtop, again, expensive software included for free.
The **** I hate is them bundling things like Netflix... it's freely available on the market, and only available in select regions, why on earth would you bundle that?

ICS on other Tegra 2 devices

I saw a thread on the rootzwiki.
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/10579-romalpha9-ics4bionic-12-18-2011/page__pid__257688#entry257688
The most common issue of ICS on the tegra 2 devices is no sound even in calling.
But it seems they fixed this problem. Is it useful for porting ICS on our device?
It would be a great starting point as the Bionic and the Atrix are very similar devices. The question will be who will take up the code and try and make it work with the atrix. I would think it would just take a talented moder
There is an ASOP ICS for the Xoom now too...

I think that will be soon. So let's hope our developers make a ICS ROM for our device.

WOW! How did you know that?
As I saw most of the devices had the ICS port, I worry about ICS not to come to our device.
Yeah, I was a bit disappointed that it seems progress has been made on most other Teg2 devices, but not the Atrix. I thought we'd hit a brick wall at EGL, but it seems those issues have been overcome on other ports...
Still, I suppose if I'm going to complain about the lack of progress, I should get my ass in gear and learn a few things about the inner duct-tape of Android and do it myself.
I've posted this a long time ago but people were too busy crying for MIUI. Nvidia have said they're releasing all ICS binaries for all their Tegra 2 and Tegra 3 devices next year. Tegra 2 binaries should be with us early next year with Tegra 3 ones following. They're also making available code related to Tegra 2 on ICS.

Motorola: If ICS won't make our device better, we won't update to it

From Motorola's official blog
Code:
You’re not alone. Good thing we’ve got a page for that. You can get the latest software upgrade news on our refreshed page.
You may be wondering why all devices aren’t being upgraded to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Here’s the deal. We work very closely with Google and cell phone carriers for every software update. And, obviously we want the new release to improve our devices. If we determine that can’t be done—well then, we’re not able to upgrade that particular device.
Happy upgrading!

Hey man, 10x for the info.
Just one thing to Motorola: who gives a flying fu#$ what your crappy developers do with ICS??? Just release the stin%^g code and drivers for the Atrix and the great devs here will do so much better then whatever you could dream!
Anyhow I (and I guess that a lot of other users) am not going to install Moto's update, and will wait for the official CM9, and the only thing I'm waiting is the driver for the camcorder and a better kernel source.

It will be Jelly Bean by the time they release ICS.
Just motobabling to excuse their poor post-sale support.
Only sthing stopping me from using CM8 as a daily, is the camera issues. Video FC is still an issue i hear.

Well the deal for them is that XDA Developpers is actually some kind of post-sale support for most of their products... And yes, they could release the drivers so the developpers can make better ROMs, I'm currently waiting for an update to install a custom Blur ICS ROM that could support my Lapdock, I'm not as angry as you but I only own the phone since 2 months, and it saved me from Windows Mobile's nightmare, also I'm waiting for a TRUE GPU driver for ICS (Some 2D apps just don't work). I totally agree with you Motorola sucks on this point.
They should admit they're not able to develop as much as jokersax
Me too. I wont updating when they release the official update. I prefer to wait for CM9.

If any other company said that, it would be valid. But lets ignore Motorola's track record for a second. Why the hell arent the Droid 3 and Droid X2 on that list? They're both effectively the same phone as the Atrix but with 512mb of ram. Even the cut ram should be enough to run considering the Nexus S and One V run it pretty well.

Probably the same reason the the Bravo is only 2.2.1 and the Defy is 2.2.2 and Defy+ is 2.3.6. Oh and they both have 512mb of ram, same processor, and the biggest difference between the three is the camera module. Should I mention that the Droid2, DroidX, Cliq2, Milestone2, Bravo, Defy, and Defy+ are all almost the same phones with different camera modules, different radios, minor differences, and some happen to have a hw keyboard? They can all boot each others custom roms with some tweaking.
Its so we'll buy newer, better phones with updated systems.
And it is enough ram. My Bravo runs CM9 pretty damn smooth with almost no issues other than some flash problems. Damn locked bootloaders.
I'm putting the blame on MotoBlur. If the Nexus S can handle ICS, then the Atrix most certainly can...

The Google-Motorola merger is supposed to finalized in the coming days. There is no reason for Google to continue MotoBlur development. Release the drivers and fire the entire software team or move them to Android development.

Wait really.. That being true, ill go on the assumption that it is without googling it because I've no reason to doubt you, you're totally right. Unless google sees potential in this blur thing, and since they have their own social network they probably don't. But isn't the whole point of blur social integration? What's googles solution to that or do they feel its a non issue?

Blur will go away now Microsoft has reamed Motorola in court over it. Might take some time, but I don't see Google/Moto paying Microsoft anything in the long term to keep using it in the US.
Aww, but I liked the social parts of Blur! I also hated everything else about it. Don't suggest any third-party widgets, though.
this is a joke, even my htc tattoo is running on ics which has only 256 mb ram and 512 mb rom
