sprint's LTE maybe not unlimited?? - Epic 4G General

if this true, i know alot of people will be leaving sprint. but it doesn't make sense, still unlimited data is the only reason to be with sprint. hopefully will be grandfather in and still have all the data we can eat.

You can never be grandfathered in. When you upgrade your phone to LTE and sign a new contract it will have any new restrictions and price changes. Hopefully it will not happen but if it does they will still need to be cheaper than the competitors or their coverage issues will cause people to switch.

You can possibly just buy the phone at full price and keep your plan. Not sure how they are gonna handle the LTE guess we may find out in Jan.

Yes until your contract runs out and then they are free to change your plan or you sign a new contract with the new plan. If you upgrade riiiiiiighhhht before they change the plans then you can get almost 2 years out of it but doubt they would activate LTE and start selling LTE phones without the rates in place.

that's incorrect, thats what should be the case, but its not ask anyone that had or has an data card, wifi hotspot with sprint. one day it was unlimited data the next day it wasnt. i was still under contract till next year.

Ouch, that is worse. But doesn't it actually say unlimited data in our contract? Then that would get you out of an ETF anyway.

I don't think Sprint will get rid of unlimited data. Sprint has been advertising unlimited data for months and it is definitely a customer catcher, I mean just look at their latest commercial.
Them upgrading to LTE would simply make it even better .

Great post.
Let's face it, a lot of these "analyst" are just giving random thoughts based on speculation. We won't know until we get an official word, but I seriously doubt that sprint will be cutting unlimited.
Sprint has already officially said their network is handling all of it's users and not being stressed, especially with the iPhone not even touching the current 4G network, let alone LTE.

Sprint charge for 4G when there is no 4G,is this legal?

When I bought my Epic few Sprint sales rep told me that we will be getting 4G in Buffalo NY in october, here comes january still no 4G.
Well I went to sprint store and asked why they chargin me for 4G when we dont have it yet(and most times im getting 2g speed on 3g,lol).This is what they said "We are charging you for the fastest cpu, even though we dont have 4g speed the cpu pulls information so fast that its considered 4g"lmfao!So I told the dude "listen you can tell that to a child that was born yesterday" but he insisted that he knew what he was talking about, lol,in other words I dint get anywhere.Speaking to a different rep she told me something like that also, lol. And a third rep said some differet but equally outrageous sht.
So my question is:Is this legal for them to be bullshitng us like that?Because im thinking about going back to sprint store and recording that conversation, but what can I do with it?Sprint promised me 4G and on that bassis I droped Tmobile which was way faster than Sprint(5-7mbps vs sprint's 1-2mbps) and now Tmobile is even faster. So I droped my beloved tmobile and got Epic instead of Vibrant on a 4G promise and now im being charged for 4G that I dont have, lol.
Anyone have any advice? Can I return my Epic and can i be tooken off the contract and get my money back?
lots of threads online for it..basicly your SOL. its a "premium data" charge cuz your phone can do more is their recent quote. The sad thing is they are going after clearwire (which they own a major share of) because only like 10% of epic and evo owners live in 4g areas and they dont want to pay clear wire for every evo/epic. but they have no plans on removing the charge from us. So either ***** enough to get out of your contract and move to another carrier or deal with it. Also you could set you phone into roam only mode and talk non stop and DL on verizon and sprint will break the contract for you =)
Yes its legal, you signed the contract. They are being sued, so while its obvious they are charging you for 4g, they now describe the fee as paying for the advanced hardware and not actually the 4g.

For "advance hardware"lol,it says charges are for 4G.And how can they charge me for any hardware?I bought my Epic and its mine so how can they charge me for it?This is like telling a grown man about santa claus being real, lol. So they have a lawsuit already? If so how can I help.
Another question is it possible to flash my Epic to Verizon and use their LTE 4G or is it different frequency from WiMax?

How can you help? Call up sprint and cancel your contract. Make it clear to them that you will not pay for a service you cannot use.
Otherwise, just pay the fee and realize that even without 4g you are getting a better deal than you would on any other wireless provider.

The only way to do that is illegal. There is no "flashing" to verizon, as verizon does not offer the Epic. The only way to do it is by fuddling with ESN's and that is not legal.
Also, wait until you see the prices Verizon will put on its 4g service. Think they are gonna offer it for free? LOL.

Yes they are charging you for the Premium Data Addon which all of their top end phones require...the Addon includes 4g, unlimited data, telnav gps, "honor of using a better phone on their network", "cool tax" and a few other things...its like when hotels have "Resort Fees" and include some things only 1% of the people use anyways...
Either way I personally don't mind the fee anymore..don't get me wrong I'm not exactly thrilled about it and find it dumb too..but I would rather have a $10 fee then tiered data like the other guys >.>
And yes FDD-LTE used on verizon and AT&T will be 700mhz, Wimax is 2.5ghz...

T-mobile had a data cap of 5gb..but they dropped it in favor of throttling...aka if they see you having too much data multiple months they will throttle you...
As for sprint..they have unlimited 3g and 4g data..the data cap limits are on wireless cards..not cellphones....
They do now have a cap. All carriers have a "soft" cap, but Sprint if you have 4G doesn't have a cap. 3G has a soft cap.

I sell phones for an indirect agent and we get grilled about that all the time. The fact of the matter is, you're usually going to pay less with Sprint, even with the Premium Data Add-on. It's for the 'big screen, fast processor, and access to the 4G network' is what I tell customers. You can look at it one of two ways- 1) They're charging you a mandatory fee for a hardware feature- not a network feature- so it's bogus. Without 4G you have no 'Premium Data' experience. 2) These two phones are far superior to any other offerings on Sprint- even the Optimus S doesn't really even come close. You're going to have a lot better internet experience than someone with one of the other phones- it will be measurably faster even on 3G.
What you have to ask yourself is- would you have a problem with them charging a lower rate for someone with a flip-phone to have unlimited internet than someone with an Android phone? If that doesn't seem to unreasonable, then realize that this isn't too much different.
In regards to the legality of it- you signed a contract, and that contract did not guarantee you would ever have WiMax in your area. The sales rep might have told you that, but it wasn't part of your contract. You can try really hard to be let out of your contract, and they might let you, but their position is (legally) sound.
Sprint doesn't have a cap for 4g because they don't know how much you use. This may have changed (doubt it), but they can't even look it up. I worked at sprint tech support for a year back when wimax was introduced to the networkm

And you have a tech job, lol.Cpu speed or ram amount dont have nothing to do with internet speed. No disrespect to you becuse youre probably reading this of sprint's manuscript. But anyone that has knowledge of electronics knows that this is bs that dont even makes sense to human brain.
I owned Behold 2 and MTS3gs with 600mhz cpu(phones half as powerful as Epic) and they both were almost as fast as sprint's 4g on tmobile's hsdpa network. You mean to tell me that sprint is charging me for 4G addon hardware inside Galaxy S Pro(Epic) that I bought and own?At least they can come up with a better sounding scam, and if sales rep promised a 4g that never came that should give a consumer a right to get out of contract.
Processor speed does affect Internet speed. You can load pages cached faster with a faster processor.

to everyone complaining about $10 add on

first of all, no sprint literature says the "$10 premium data" is for 4g access, the only reference to 4g is the phone names. I repeat, NO OFFICIAL SPRINT literature says the fee is for 4g access. You can call the charge what ever you want, but quit whining about sprint charging you for something you opted to purchase.
If you really have a problem with paying a small premium monthly for the best smartphone in the us right now, guess what you decided to buy it and sign the contract. there are plenty of other devices that do not require you to pay a premium. If you want to play, you gotta pay.
Sprint gives you unlimited data while on the sprint network, once again UNLIMITED DATA WHILE ON SPRINTS NETWORK, that includes evdo and wimax. You can make video calls while over sprints native data network, does att let you do that with the crabapple. NO, because it uses a ridiculous amount of data, the new skype app on the crabapple lets you make calls over 3g and with atts 2gb plan, it also eats those precious gigs faster than joey chestnut eating hot dogs on the 4th of july. so you pay $10 more than the base plan so $79 with UNLIMITED DATA, calls to all mobile phones in us, and messaging, as well as sprint nav (although pointless thanks to google nav). Do the math and see how much att will charge you to use 10gigs a month+unlim txt+calls+nav+insurance, $10 at that point seems petty.
There have been leaks of verizons pricing for lte access with phones and aircards, NOT UNLIMITED and more $ as well.
Also sprint plans to have every one of their cell sites supporting all of their technologies by 2015, and they do have the plans and infrastructure in place to switch to lte. Sprint owns more than twice of the spectrum that att and verizon own combined. So even when the competition can have lte up and running it will be alot more congested than sprint.
I am personally happy with the epic aside from not having newest software, but for the price i pay each month and the things i can do with my phone and not worrying about a crazy bill i wouldn't go anywhere else, but if your not happy you have choices and nobody is stopping you from getting what you feel is the best for you so quit complaining or get something different.

I completely agree with the OP, but I wouldn't go to say that all whiners need to STFU, their simply not understanding what their getting for the $10. Before signing up with Sprint, I went ahead and looked at all the other service providers plans. None even compare to Sprint. If its an extra $120 / year for Unlimited Data on one of the most badass phones that will soon have 4G in lots more areas that sounds like a steal to me. Verizon has their 4G LTE hotspot thing for like $50 / 5gb month. You could just tether your phone, get unlimited data on such a small premium and not worry about data caps. So once again I think Sprints service is a steal, we've been with Sprint for over 10 years and I have absolutely no complaints besides I agree with the OP on the late software.
Anyway stop whining about Sprints lousy $10 "Premium Data" fee. Your getting unlimited data on a top of the line phone!

Who cares if Sprint has more spectrum, if it's not being used. who cares what Sprint charges if Wimax isn't available in ones area or you have to stand still, outside, to be able to use it.
No matter what Sprint has with Wimax, right now, it's more marketing then anything else. They've already admitted their "1st to 4G" has failed.
All I care about is being overcharged for something I can't access. And when I'm in an area where it's supposed to be available, it's so spotty, it's not even worth using. BTW, I nor anyone else on Sprint should be being charged $10 a month for premium data since we all have UNLIMITED Data. I also don't care what any other company charges since they're not the ones billing me.
In real world use, what good is a FFC on the Epic or Evo. How often does anyone use video conferencing? What makes the Epic so much better then any other Galaxy S phone in the US, a keyboard? Get real, that is a personal preference ... There's nothing more advanced about the Epic then any other Galaxy S phone. In fact, you could say the GSM galaxy S phones are better since they can do Video out. Evo ... Nothing wrong with the Droid X on VzW and where the Evo has a FFC, the Droid X has better battery life.
Bottom line is this, if you feel good about paying more then one should, go ahead and pay, but don't tell others they shouldn't complain. If you want others to accept the $10 Sprint fee, why don't you just pay it for us? If you feel Sprint's phones are so much superior then other phones on the market, good for you, but that's a personal thing.
Ok... I'm getting off my soapbox now... I think I've said enough for you to get my jest.
Love all the threads with people whining about other people whining. Vicious cycle.

Your emotional dislike or like doesn't define "real".
Lack of phones?
The Evo shift, Evo and Epic lineup against everything that is out....will that be changing soon with the CES phone's being released?
Yes.
Will it last very long?
No.
Sprint's delay in releasing new phones is likely due to the situation they are having choosing lte or sticking with wimax, due to the financial issues with Clear.
But they're coming.

Tmobile's coverage, less the coverage providing including other's networks, is significantly less than Sprint/Verizon/At&t.
Their prices are barely, if at all, cheaper than Sprint's and that only is true if you're talking about individual plans.

Don't forget that "unlimited data" is throttled after so much usage.
I don't care what anyone says, T-Mobile might have throttled data, but at it's worst HSPA+ is numerous times better than WiMAX. Not to mention the fact that it doesn't cause your phone to chug your battery like WiMAX does.

My co-worker's MyTouch 3G is always about 2 MBPS faster than my EVO on 4G.

Don't know about battery usage but I can honestly say that HSPA+ is pretty terrible in the three personal examples [friends that have it] comparable to even Sprint's 3g.
I don't know if it's just our area Detroit suburbs or what but it's ****in' slow here.

[Q] SIM only no contract carrier that supports the G2?

I have an G2 from T-Mobile, and i love the phone.. But i'm paying 175$ a month for two lines. That's outrageous! I'd rather pay cancellation fees and get rid of T-Mobile for good! But i love this phone, a lot. I'm very used to it.
Are there any SIM only carriers in the US that will suppose unlimited android data? T-Mobile boasts that they have unlimited data, which is honestly a con, big time. Since after 5GB is used, they limit your data to EDGE bandwidth, which is useless!
Are there ANY honestly UNLIMITED data carriers out there anymore?! Please, advise me in any way possible, i'm losing my mind! ..and my paycheck. ):
I think only unlimited one is sprint but its cdma I believe.. they wont cap you after 5gb
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk
AT&T is the only other of the "big 4" carriers that is GSM (Sprint and Verizon are CDMA). And AT&T does not have unlimited data plans anymore, and the G2 is not compatible with AT&T's 3G network anyway.
There might be some small regional carrier that has a better deal. But remember that the G2 only has 1700/2100 and 2100 MHz UMTS (3G) bands. If the regional carrier does not use those bands, 3G won't work.

According to Wiki, Simple uses T-Mobile and AT&T. Interesting, I wonder how that works, since those 2 carriers don't use the same 3G frequencies.

Its who I use. And I like them. Me and my wife are currently paying a $100 a month. Me with data, her without. It would be $120 if she had it as well.
Walmart is starting a something called Family Mobile. Supposed to run on Tmobile's network. Month to month.

If you can't pay or don't wanna pay the bill that comes with the phone of YOUR choice then you prob don't deserve the phone. That's my opinion.... Just saying. If you really wanna save money port your number to google voice and remove your sms plan and drop your minutes down. Be creative and you can save money.

is your mms on simple mobile fully functional?
Simplemobile is cheap and offers coverage from the same towers as T-mobile. They do offer an unlimited plan as well. You sign up with no credit check and they send you a SIM in the mail. Pretty solid and I'm surprised more people on XDA don't use them because this is a dream for someone who is frequently changing phones and doesn't wanna deal with bullsh*t carrier stuff. They're just the same as T-mobile without the big-company support lines, etc. and they don't deal with handsets, only SIM cards, so they're going to be cheaper.
You can also stay with T-mobile for a no contract plan. I'm on an "Even More+" plan. No contract, $59.99 a month 500 minutes, unlimited texts, "unlimited" 3g/(4g) data (aka 5gb then throttled). T-mo's no-contract plans are generally $20/month cheaper than the contract plans oddly enough. I believe the $69.99 plan is 1000 minutes, and theres an unlimited minutes tier at $79.99. From what I've heard theyre starting to phase out Even More+ plans because they like to have people in contracts and buy phones from them, and they really don't advertise them anymore, but when I went to my T-mobile store I specifically asked for it and they offered it no problem.

They probably offer SIM's to people with T-mobile frequency phones, and other SIM's to people with AT&T frequency phones, and simply provide service to the set of towers your phone works with.

Snarky, and rude. Your comment is null to this question thread. I'm sorry i don't have a high paying job and i'm sorry i don't like taking restrictions from the big guys and their mobile corporations. You can take your rude ass comments somewhere else, because they sure as hell aren't respected, nor needed here. Thanks.

I agree. You can't blame OP for wanting a cheaper offering to run his phone. OP isn't looking for cheats to lower his bill or anything, he just wants a cheaper option. This is the main reason why a lot of people leave Verizon and AT&T for Sprint and T-Mobile.
I use a local carrier called cincinatti bell. Of course I live in....cincinatti,ohio! But it is free longdistance and unlimited data (no cap) but the "4g" speeds top out at 2.7 Mb in my area... they do have other store around the country and they say they use both T-mobile and att for roaming..... not sure if this helps as my bill is about the same as yours for two phones (1 with data) but at least it is unlimited for real! And the service is good. No contract.

I've decided!
Turns out, one of you posters helped me out greatly by suggesting Simple Mobile. I checked their website, and i can get Unlimited Everything for 60$, and the SIM was only 12$. It's coming in the mail, and should arrive soon! I shall update later on about it's service. I'm not sure if it has truly unlimited data, so if anyone does know the answer to this question, that would be awesome! But if not, I'll just call customer service and ask them.
Oh, and another little tidbit; They support almost EVERY phone here in XDA! I looked a the list and it's HUGE. I highly recommend that all of you check this out. It looks like a great deal, and they cover everywhere that T-Mobile does, too! So, go check out the site!

'Tis true - I use them. The first line is $45 for unlimited minutes/text, up to 4 additional for $25 ea. You need to purchase data via fill cards (~$40/gig) but they don't expire.
Best part is, tmo phones work without SIM unlocking. I'm getting 4G on my Galaxy S 4G, and all I had to do was stick the SIM in.

Wow. Just... wow. Seriously?

Verizon doing away with unlimited data, forcing tiered data

Just read that this summer all current Verizon users who are grandfathered into unlimited 3G will be forced to switch to tiered shared data plans. Exact words were "Verizon will have no problem making money" off the plans. I have been grandfathered to unlimited data. And not that I use a lot what I don't like is that the price of data is about to get considerably more expensive and I for one am already extremely unhappy with vz and this just further makes Mr want to tell Verizon to shove it up their a$$ when my contract ends next January. Thoughts anyone?

Wow, guess I will be sticking with my Xperia Play for quite some time. My fiance has a Razr, so our 4G unlimited needs are covered. If Verizon is doing crap like this then they need to understand they are not a "telephony" service anymore. All I need is an IP address assigned to me and let me pay $5-$10 per GB I use per line.

You already know I have something to say
So far it claims that this wont effect 3g users until they upgrade to a 4g phone, I have an upgrade but I will not be using it EVER unless an xplay2 comes out ! Which could be never. But I had a feeling this would happen eventually. I seriously think the part about "making money off of data plans" is crap. They claim they want to push people into using more data, thats kinda crazy the actually claim this ya know. Like Gee thanks Verizon their basically saying " we cant wait to bank people on data plans"
I read about this.
They are doing away with unlimited, but they are introducing "shared data". I personally use about 200mb a month. So if they do 2GB for $30 SHARED (any phone and any tablet) then I'll be very happy.
I would prefer to use my smartphones without a data plan and only voice and wifi if I could do that.
Sent from my R800x using XDA
So if we just buy on ebay used phones and swap sim cards we shouldn't be affected? They said you will be forced to tier "upon upgrading". The best thing to do is wait a few weeks before this goes into effect and but the best 4g phone they have and that will get you two more years of unlimited lte
Sent from my R800x using Tapatalk
I think that Verizon is going to find out that they could have made more money if they had kept unlimited data and raised the price of data by a few dollars. As of right now, they are forcing many users to lower their data plan and use less data because it is all they can afford. This means that they won't get much more money than before and the customer will get less data overall. Is that what they really want? If they want people to move over to tiered then they need to start updating their phones on time or even at all, and go out and get the best phones on their network. That way people will want to upgrade because the new phone is irresistible.

This move has me thinking when some sort of Xperia Play 2 maybe comes out I will just buy an unlocked one and go on AT&T who is getting way better, as long as they support unlocked phones on what will be 4GLTE by then. Hopefully I can get an unsubsidized plan, for cheaper, and I can tell Big Red to suck a fattie, on principal.
There's one word to explain my emotions right now about this: f*ck. I use over 2GB a month with PDANet and Barnacle Tether. I need mah dataaaaaa!!!!

The only reason I'm still with verizon instead of, say, AT&T is because I've got unlimited data. I use AT&T uVerse for home internet, so I can get a wireless deal. If I'm going to be forced to pay for tiered data, then I'm going to go to the cheapest place that has it for the most data. Not sure if its AT&T or not, but I'm going to start looking.

Yeah I was with Cingular, then 2 months later they officially became AT&T, and was with them for 4 years, I had bought an unlocked phone after my contract phone died and stayed on a month to month plan, Then I moved to Utah where all my family is, moved so my kids can be around their cousins, and about 6 months here switched to VZ, bought a droid 2 global (f...u.... Moto) and noticed that my data speeds from AT&T were around 1-1.5mbps, VZ here is horrible. I have never gotten faster then 250kbps. This mixed with their bs pricing and lousy service, both hardware, and firmware related, and now the data tiered..... yup I am going to walk into a VZ store grab a VZ flyer stick it down my pants, wipe, and stick it on the door handle. Sorry for the rant, just have a lot of anger with VZ. I'm paying $30 a month for terrible data, I can barely do GPS sometimes. Rant done

Att's "4G" Play isn't true 4G LTE. The next Play I'm sure will be but I've read rumors that ATT and others may not support unlocked phones on their 4G networks (which doesn't make sense at all, but I wouldn't be surprised). Guess we will see. We are 6 months to a year out from a new Play anyway, if it even happens.

I came across a relatively new in box with all material Xplay AT&T 4G for $189 with free shipping, even though I still have about 9 months to go thinking if snagging that for when the time comes I can just use it on AT&T. Thats the other reason I dont care for VZ, CDMA, cant do voice and data which is retarded (I know its how the CDMA works) Plus with an unlocked AT&T phone when the wife and I go to China to visit family I can use it there on a prepaid sim card in China.

Supposedly ATT 3G is faster than Verizon 3G. Their "4G" right now is HSPA+ which is really more like 3.5G so its definitely faster. However the new 4G LTE, its like broadband speed. My Mother has a 4G LTE Droid Razr, its so fast that her data service is indistinguishable from WiFi from our cable connection.

Eh, the only reason that AT&T can do both voice and data at the same time is because of how their signal works. Those phones are always receiving two types of signal, so when you're on the phone, the data works at the same time, so long as you have adequate signal for that function.
Personally, the simultaneous voice and data isn't really a draw for me, as I can't think of when I'd ever need to use it. Besides that, it seems rude, at least to me, to be talking and surfing at the same time.
