ICS on NS4G - Nexus S General

I noticed that even though the ICS source code is now available Google only has Android 2.3.7 drivers for the Nexus S 4G's internal hardware (CDMA/WiMAX, Orientation Sensor, etc) available currently. Is it possible to compile a working version of ICS using the Android 2.3.7 drivers for the Nexus S 4G? Also, if I follow Google's compile instructions to the letter is there an easy way to backup my current stock ROM? Google's official stock ROM's for the Nexus S 4G phone has a script called "install-recovery.sh" that runs on boot removing Clockwork. Am I correct in assuming that ICS would do this if I compiled it myself per Google's instructions and flashed it to my phone?

My goodness ics is making people bonkers.

This isn't dev section material... And there are already working builds of ics if you don't want to go through the hassle of doing it yourself...
Although! If you do compile your own, then post it in our lovely dev section.
Follow the leader @corythug

I'd rather compile my own. As stated in my original post I just need a couple of questions answered first. Otherwise there won't be any new ROM's from me in your so-called lovely dev section.

This will be moved once a mod sees it, but, next time know this. People will be more apt to help you out if you put a thread like this in q& a or even maybe general instead of mucking up dev forum with a non dev thread.

Haha. That's so funny. ICS is making people mental.... you should see the Evo 3D section lol. We're pissed over there! Straight up riot.

OP, I apologize for the others lack of decorum on this site. I am afraid that I am not much help, but I have a couple of suggestions:
As far as the backup, you can make a nandroid and once you are done playing around you can reboot into the boot loader and use the fastboot to reload the recovery onto the phone. From there you can re-install the nandroid backup. Keep in mind that you might want to copy the backup off of the SD card just in case you need to lock/unlock the phone. (This erases the sd card.)

If there are questions in the wrong areas or simply don't feel like answering, refrain from posting and report it to us. We will move it to Q&A or General depending on the question. Building on this point, if anyone is caught flaming someone who posted in the correct section, that person will be given a vacation.

Not to interfere with this heated discussion of a little white porch and ruby red shoes but I think I will try actually answering the question at hand the best I can:
There has been a few topics on this and as of yet no one is currently on this project. In fact as far as I know all the devs are currently busy with Froyo and Gingerbread.
Nobody is busy doing anything... Vibrant development lately has been completely dead. Many other phones have Gingerbread running perfectly well, where is it for the Vibrant? I was told it was an easy port from the Nexus since they have similiar hardware. So where is it? Face it... the Vibrant is the red-headed stepchild of android and the devs have abandoned it

Name one phone running genuine gingerbread besides the Nexus S (not themed to look like it, or running with minimal functionality). Also, no one with any sense would call the port "easy". It's just easier for Galaxy S phones than others. Please don't speak about what our devs are or are not doing until you at least TRY to develop something yourself.
On topic, there have of course been many requests for this before, and even a little talk of taking a shot at porting it. I'd say out comes down to a lack of Chinese speaking devs

I smell smokescreen. I mean if the Fascinate can get CM7 running, exactly why not the Epic? They say it's "different" but if you can get CM7 running on the only other CDMA based Galaxy S device, it can't possibly be that hard to get it onto the Epic (keyboard too hard to deal with or something? lol!). They just don't want to try, pure and simple.

[Donation]Atrix 4G MIUI Port

A lot of people have been interested in getting MIUI on the Atrix and FRAMEWORK over at miui.us has stated that he has gotten some progress on this port but is stuck at the point of having no Atrix to test his port on. He is known for porting MIUI to multiple devices. FRAMEWORK said that if he got his hands on the device, it could take a few days to get a working port on our Atrix.
Anyone interested in donating to this dev getting his hands on a Atrix, post on the thread. From there, I guess he will have to set up a way to take the donations or we can put something together. Either ways, this is an awesome opportunity for Atrix users who want a polished and sleek looking ROM.
You have to start it with the necessary half of the phone cost, by XDA rules.

Our CM7 is stable but is missing camera functionality and few other things. But IMO its stable.. no reboots here
I personally do not think donation threads should be allowed in xda at all without proof of progress. I know he has ported to several devices already, but that is what the donations links on their website is for. I have also seen several threads like this raise hundreds of dollars to get a dev a device and they release one thing and support it for only a week or two and never hear from them again. Just my opinion, I'm not trying to insult anyone.
I tend to agree, donation threads just aren't right. We are moving towards paying devs more and more. at this rate, it will be I won't help unless i get paid this amount. Kinda what this thread is, isn't it. He can't\won't get it done unless somebody buys him a phone. We have done that already at least once here. Maybe that dev would offer up the phone already purchased to this dev so he can do his part, then he can pass it on to the next.....

Now that I've read the last few comments, I realize I totally agree as well. When I first saw this thread, I voted Maybe So, because honestly I was like "Yeah, let's get this going so we can get MIUI ASAP!!" but now I'm realizing...it probably won't make it go any faster, and we will really probably have it VERY soon after a full CM7 is released (whenever that is...), and if people want to THEN they can start donating to the guy. But to donate before hand? I didn't realize until just now how foolish that could be!
As Atrix users, we've seen plenty of devs take the loot and then split, so it'd be risky to do that again.
Besides, I've seen on the MIUI site a thread that lists some devices they're working on, and the only things on the Atrix to do list that aren't there are Working CM7 and Working MIUI. I'll go look for a link and bring it back here if anyone wants it

So yeah, I mean it should be said that this ALSO doesn't guarantee MIUI...but at least we know that we should wait for CM7 until anything should really be done.
And milesjohnson makes a good point...instead of buying someone a device for them to use as they see fit, he could perhaps just do the same coding and have others that already have their own device testing it or something.

This is complete bs, Bugless Pete is one of the best developers out there and doesn't deserve this. All the information the mod wants is in the thread...not to mention the title, his github, and website which btw you don't have to register to use. It's kinda ironic considering the thread the mod links to in his signature which proclaims such things as "XDA IS a place to come to learn and share your knowledge. If you are not here for those reasons then you are here for the wrong ones." "XDA is a developers site" "XDA is and always will be about the developers." ...just like Rem3Dy said...might as well tell the best devs to go elsewhere.

What happened to contacting you first to address the issue instead of just locking it. Not that there is any issues, that I can see. I feel like they didn't handle this very professionally on the side of moderation.

You contact the moderator and ask what he's playing at.
I agree with mustangboy88, I don't really see any issues. It looks like it's either a mistake or some kind of personal grudge. Did you sleep with his little sister or something?

I am a bit confused.....
The link to my site does not require registering, its a free open blog (made with blogger).
Changelog can be seen on my site, github, and I mention what changed in post as I update.
Basebands are not included in ROMs.
Android version is in the title of my thread.
Now that my thread is locked I can not edit it, so how do I get my thread unlocked?

I have plenty to say about the mods around here. You know who you are. But.. for the sake of not getting banned yet again for speaking my mind ill keep my mouth shut. I will say this, they need to get their mod access taken away. Can't stand forum rentacops. Keep it going Pete. Awesome rom bruh.

Whatever. Who needs this forum anyway? I follow pete on twitter, and subscribe to his blog's rss. Anyone who appreciates or uses his work probably does too.
The way I see it, it's XDA's loss.
mods here are rather douchy no?

Ill say this, locking a thread and moving it to general is not very nice, makes me think twice about the powers that be around here....

Is it possible to get a refund on the xda premium app? I'm too old for this power trip BS.

I also checked two or three other ROM threads and they either don't have a change log listed or else a baseband listed. If you're going to lock threads at least be consistent. Seems like a witch hunt.
edit: The more I look into this the more upsetting it is. I see at least 2 threads in development that don't even deal with the ROM development, just discussion about them. Shouldn't they be in general discussion? Hell CyanogenMod doesn't even list a baseband. /rant

ICS and Jellybean Rom Discussion Thread

I figured I would open this thread due to the all the hooey going on and also the clogging up of Kushdeck's and JaredtheGreat's ICS thread no longer on here, and with preludedrew not posting his roms on XDA. Any questions or issues are welcome and anyone that can help, can feel free to assist. No links will be posted here. Please follow @preludedrew on Twitter for updates and downloads. Please do not post links unless they are your own. Lets keep this thread nice and friendly and please follow the rules of this forum....that being said Thank You!

I've been running the rom for the last 24+ hours. I'm really impressed with how stable it has been. It has some issues mainly dealing with the gallary/camera and setting photos as things etc. but still, for it's alpha stage it's not bad.
I applied the car-o-dope settings and it seemed to calm it down a bit also. These roms should get real fun here soon!

Agreed and the battery life is outstanding. The gallery seems to settle down after a while, but I've been using Quickpic as a picture gallery and makes setting wallpaper and cropping much easier...it works well with ICS and I've gotten no fc's using it. Its free in the market and is a great alternative to stock gallery

You don't have to be a twitter fan, it takes 2 seconds to create an account and search who you want to follow, and check it periodically...keep it as an app on your phone so you don't have to keep signing in all the time. I recommend following @kushdeck as well because he posts test builds not available on XDA also, actually he just posted his alpha 4 build with working camera a little bit ago...

i didnt see what the big deal was when someone made a thread in the dev section. guess drew didnt either.
per his tweet
"preludedrew:Fyi the thread on xda for evo 4g doesn't bother me. Better than others that don't give credit."
Yeah, I love how everyone was freaking out about a link being posted without even knowing whether or not Drew would be against it. Download links are visible to everyone with an internet connection... there shouldn't be a restriction on posting them.

The problem is with noobs flashing the Rom and something going wrong or running into problems and asking. the noobish questions that the Op isn't qualified to answer. The reason he doesn't care about people posting a link is because he doesn't have to deal with all the noobs and a-holes...

Except noobs flash ROMs and ask repetitive questions all of the time.. Why should we care if someone foolishly flashes a ROM they know nothing about? In any of the other threads, users ask questions which are 9 times out of 10 answered by other users, rather than the devs themselves.

All you post is bull****, you're not helping anybody or contributing anything. You want to rant and rave go start your own thread. I opened this one after that last debacle, so people would have a place to discuss and come for help with this Rom. And here you come again to start ****...please if you have nothing to contribute please go troll somewhere else

For the last time...that wasn't the issue.... IT WAS IN THE WRONG SECTION that dude developed nothing you look up and see Aamikam look down and see Kushdeck and this a - hole strarted a thread to post a link to somebody elses Rom in the middle of these REAL devs ....when you post a Rom in the dev section you need to be available to address any issues it causes, bug fixes, improvements not drop a link and bone out...

So we couldn't have a thread with a link in it in the development section because the OP wasn't qualified to answer questions, so you open a thread that serves the same exact purpose WITHOUT a link to the ROM? If you think I'm here to troll you are sorely mistaken, I merely am posting my thoughts in a thread, just as you are doing. I fail to see anything I've said or done to make myself more of a troll than you or anyone else here.

You call him an A-hole for posting a thread in hopes of clearing clutter from other threads, and I'M the troll?
The thread was perfectly at home there. It is a ROM in active development made by a dev who no longer posts here; but he has no problem with his work being posted alongside proper credit. The OP posted it to give room for development conversation.
There are multiple threads set up like this.. the CM threads, for example. After being posted, the poster usually never comes back and all questions and concerns are answered by users like us.
Posting that thread in the development section gave room for people who create mods to share their work, as well as to discuss different ideas regarding the fixing of certain bugs.
