Is Gingerbread finally coming to the G3? - Galaxy 3 General

Samsung is reportedly going to upgrade its Galaxy series of smartphones to Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform by the end of the year. The Mobile Indian quotes a Samsung executive as saying the upgrade should be available within six to eight weeks from now. According to the Samsung executive, the Gingerbread update will be rolled out for entire Galaxy series of smartphones. The development comes days after LG announced Gingerbread update (Android 2.3)for its Optimus smartphones. Sony Ericsson also started rolling out Android 2.3.4 update for its Xperia-range of smartphones.

What do you think? Will our G3 be in the list of phones getting GB?

Hope so.If we will get update it will roll out after new year in february or something. But if we get it it would be realy good

Yeah i think it will come. But i also think that CM7 is better;p

i doubt it. still hope it will come but why would they come back at their decision to not roll out GB for the g3?
still crossing fingers though.

Because htc and sony did it...

I hope so but I think that phone is too short of everything to work smoothly.

The phone could easily run gingerbread and Samsung isn't really doing it for the customers anyway. It's doing it because the optimus and xperia range of phones are all being upgraded to gingerbread and Samsung doesn't want to look like they don't care about their customers.

Well I believe that history is repeating itself
When Samsung was going to release the 2.3 update for galaxy s and other at that time it released the froyo update for us. It may be that now ICS is coming up so they want to release an update here just for the sake of name OHH WE HAVE I UPDATE FOR EVERYONE!!

let the hopes never die my friendsssss

Samsung is going to ensure that all Android 2.2 Froyo running smartphones — Galaxy Fit, Galaxy Pop, and Galaxy Mini will get the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update before the end of this year. Apparently Samsung aims that all Android smartphones in India should run Gingerbread update

our G3 can easily run gingerbread and it will be smoother than froyo. phones with less specs are running GB

if the android os itself would be so demanding then phones wouldnt be able to handle apps on top of it.
g3 would probably be able to run icecream sandwich too but we will never be able to get it officialy.

mehh..
I have no doubt about g3 handling gingerbread, have seem the current CM7 port run on it.
but since the statement was made by an Indian Samsung executive, and clearly mentioned the newer mid-range (pop, fit and mini) that came out with the 2.2 out of the box, I am afraid samsung might decide to forget about the g3's which seem to be discontinued in the indian market, as this is clearly a strategy to sell more mid-range phones to the indian consumers, what with the launch of icecream sandwich, froyo would seem too outdated out of the box unless an update was promised.
Well no harm in remaining hopeful, but i am still taking this with a pinch of salt.

Dont think that gingerbread is going to come.... froyo update took much longer to come than promised and if gingerbread is going to come, it'll probably b very late

I believe Samsung will only release gingerbread to the galaxy phones that are currently being sold (tab, ace, mini and such), not to the old ones (3, 5...).
But even so, maybe it is still of some use if developers can put their hands on some drivers for hardware in those models that were also used on the old ones.

Does this mean we will get touchwiz 4.0? It is so much better than the crappy one we have and it's a lot faster and hardly any lag.

As we know Samsung has released the Froyo to All users on Many worldwide Carriers on 11,November 2010 and All of them is Now enjoying Froyo and Waiting to taste the Gingerbread.
Well, Today we Got a Confirmation That Samsung Galaxy S is Getting Another Update probably on February,2011 may be Earlier and this update will have Android 2.3 Gingerbread onboard. Leaked ROMs and Videos may start rolling-out on January so Stay tuned, Enjoy your Froyo... Gingerbread is coming on the way to Make "YouMobile".
Gingerbread brings with it an improved user interface which is slicker and more streamlined, along with better power management. It also boasts one-touch word selection and copy/paste, support for multiple cameras and goodies such as NFC (Near Field Communications).

This is a joke for sure.
My S has Eclair, till this time there is no official froyo upgrade available for my phone and samsung is going to release gingerbread the coming February?
Are we talking about Samsung or about the comedy channel?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
This is the difference between porting (having to program the drivers for about everything) and having a native release (like HTC on N1).
Now that NexusS is in the hands of Google, we can expect faster release!

Froyo has been out since October/early November, officially released by Samsung. Blame your carrier if your not getting the update. Contrary to belief, Samsung is quicker than HTC when pushing out updates, it's just that HTC devices have a much larger userbase on XDA, hence the quicker porting/updating.
2.2.1 has been out officially since September as well on N1,

N1 is the base on wich they developped the update, don't you think it's normal it gets prior updates?
It is also pretty usual that all the "clones" of N1 will get theses updates pretty fast, since HTC only have to put their bloatware on it and it's pretty much done!
Thanks! Hope this is true.

Both of these are hardware dependant and both the Galaxy S doesn't have. The multiple camera support is for using with taking 3D pictures and/or recording 3D movies. And NFC is there so that android devices can attempt to get ahead of the iphone5 which is said to support it but these needs a dedicated chip.

Google can not give the gingerbread code out to companies until it has been officially released.
Meaning no company will have any advantage in the race for gingerbread.

I have had one problem with this phone since purchase in September. You need to try a custom rom with a kernel upgrade, not like there is any lag in stock JPU.
I don't get how so many people complain about this great device when it can be pimped out within 30 minutes.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Some Galaxy still don't have an official Froyo update yet. And the ones that do are still laggy. The 2.2.1 is finally a ROM that isn't laggy but its not official its a leak.
If Samsung comes out with Gingerbread they will screw it up. I'd rather have the community come up with a basic Gingerbread that works. And the community will do it long before Samsung does.
dude this is samsung, we all saw what happened with froyo and all the delays.
I have little hope for a febuary release, i say it's closer to june
2.2.1 is a revelation. I have put it on my galaxy s and its no longer laggy, really smooth, new market, lock screen wallpapers etc. Finally its transformed the phone into the powerhouse it always had the potential to be. I urge you all to get 2.2.1 ASAP!

Gingerbread not coming to our Apollo's?

Hello all,
According to this site Link a lot of galaxy devices are getting the gingerbread 2.3.3 update.
My question is:
Why don't we get the update?
I mean, the galaxy mini is getting it, why not the SG3?
Can someone please explain?

Its business ;-) why would Samsung pay their devs to make GB on SG3, who buys SG3 anymore? Nowadays they buy galaxy mini and ace, so they want to support those devices... I mean SG3 is not making money for Samsung anymore, so they don't have any reason to provide update :-(

i couldn't have said it better. Samsung has stopped SG3 production itself so we can't expect anymore updates. Even the Froyo update promised by samsung came so late. do not even dream about Gingerbread. We can get it only if it is ported by some dev from the ace or some other phone.
It's true but also sad. I haven't planed to buy a new phone for 2 years. I hope someone will translate the gingerbread from galaxy ACE to our phone
But, samsung has to make gingerbread. Rules of google! 18 months after the release of gingerbread every phone that can run gingerbread has to have it!
Yeah and 18 months after 2.4/2.5 is probably coming out. Then gingerbread will be like froyo right now.
Sent from my GT-I5800 using XDA App
no gingerbread for us officialy. but what is with the porting? i see alot of low range phones like xperia x8, lg optimus one etc. getting ported gingerbread. How are they doing this porting? Is anyone with G3 doing it?
Samsung isn't porting gb to sg3, but there are some people on the dev board getting organized on porting cyanogen, which uses gb nowadays, and that is basically our best bet on getting it working on our phones right now.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045224
Even so, i don't think they'll get it ready for at least a couple of months from now, so you can either help them with dev/testing or sit back and not think about 2.3 for now
I read it somewhere in this forum that it's not possible to port Gingerbread as it requires at least 1.0 Ghz processor. Would be glad to prove wrong though.
even the galaxy 5/europe got gingerbread http://www.madteam.co/forum/index.p...anogen-710-nightly/page__pid__4724?#entry4724

No! Its not necessary as Galaxy Ace can have GB but it doesn't have 1Ghz processor
Then giving more priority to high-end phones can be reason?
There's no point in Samsung to release gingerbread for our phone. Paying devs to make Gingerbread to some old phone which is not giving them money anymore would casue them to go in minus and that means the phone would've been a failure in the markets.
i think that the sg3 won't have the update to gingerbread because they will not earn nothing from this marketing choise..
Samsung has something to gain. It's based on pleased customers. If they bring Gingebread for G3 many of the users will be pleased and they're gona buy again Samsung. If customers see that other companies give GB for their devices, it is possible to buy from other companies. This happened with many disapointed SE X8 users(they dont even have official 2.2).
All the above is known as aftersales service.
ALWAYS high-end phones will get first updates !! And everyone knows why.
Dont panic SG3 Will get Gingerbread too, as we got official froyo so late will get gingerbread too eventualy in june i belive.
No way Galaxy Mini or Fit is better than Galaxy 3. It's just that they are latest phones doesn't mean they are more popular. I doubt they will get more sales than Galaxy 3.
The thing is when we got froyo that's when gingerbread came out. Now when gingerbread comes to our g3 then we all are going to want 2.4

i mailed samsung yesterday with the question "can we expect an update to gingerbread for the apollo i5800 as its also part of the galaxy line?" the answer was short, "dont count on it".

ICS and i9000 - a little history

I'm not going to ask if Samsung would relase ICS for i9000. I'll just refresh my memory with a little bit of history.
December 6th 2010 - SDK 2.3
December 17th 2010 - The source code 2.3
February 13th 2011 - SGS2 announced
February 25th 2011 - 2.3 OTA for N1 and NS
April 16th 2011 - 2.3 "OTA" for SGS1 (5+ months after 2.3 SDK came out).
So, if the history repeats itself, we won't get 4.0 before April of 2012th, if ever. More possible scenario would be SGS2 is getting 4.0 in April, and SGS1 stays on 2.3 due to "memory problems".
Anyone remembers 1st Samsung Galaxy (i7500?). It received 1.6 six months after Donut SDK came out and stayed on 1.6 due to memory problems ...
I'll be buying SGS2 HD LTE soon anyway.. can't resist
I to do not think we'll get it from Samsung but do hope CM hooks us up with CM9 soon after source code is out.

Yeah, but don't forget Samsung can fool us with their launcher that "will probably require more RAM than available", just like Sense needed to much RAM on HTC Desire and Desire never got official 2.3, although Nexus One will probably go even to 4.0.
Btw. Nexus S received official 2.3 OTA the same day as N1, on 23 February 2011, so we can expect CM8 much before that, I'm just hoping for GPU enabled browser in ICS, only thing that keeps me from CM7 now.

3a)first bulids that infos about was leaked from nexuss
4) galaxy nexus premiere = november = source release confirmed officialy
5) sgs1 update process speeded up (not to mention leaks) but the source codes stays outdated basicly
expect ics leak at february or maybe we get even more lucky
as there already are nexuss builds but just not public

As i know there wasnt problem with RAM (desire has full 512MB) but with ROM, because new sense was too big for desire memory, thats why desire got old sense. If nexus s gets ICS and sgs dont, i will never ever buy another android phone (i had four of them, and i've been ****ed every time from htc and samsung), because i'm not money printing machine to buy new phone every year if i want to use new upgraded OS.
Do you realize that sgs is "old" as iPhone 4 and as you can see iPhone 4 already got iOS5 (even 3GS got iOS5 and that **** is older than nexus one) and will get iOS6, and i must to spend another 550-600 euros to buy new phone that will be abandoned after one year. Some will say that sgs dont have enough memory but i dont give a fu.k for that, they need to find a way to make things work, because apple can.
if SGS will dont get a ICS, I will be very sad, bcz Desire HD will get it... damn
There is no reason for SGS not to get it if Nexus S is getting it. It's same freaking phone for most part. Unless Samsung desides to f... us on this one.

I see no reason not to get it... Nexus S got it and runs it ultra fast. That means Galaxy S is more than capable of running it! Also, Nexus S needed to be updated to 2.3.6 to be able to upgrade. I believe we will see leaks for our devices as well. I think that is one reasons Samsung never released TouchWiz 4 for our device, I believe it will come in this ICS update (if they make one).

Day dreaming? Why would they port the old crappy TouchWiz 3 on ICS when they have an already ported and new version of TouchWiz 4?
Also... Samsung Wave got TouchWiz 4 in Bada 2.0 update, I don't see why Galaxy S won't get it in ICS (both are HUGE updates and both devices share the same hardware).
..
To make their clients happy and keep staying with Samsung products? One thing is sure... if they update SGS to ICS, I will keep buying Samsung phones and I'm sure I'm not the only one who will do the same!
Nexus One doesn't have i9000's power...
I hate android fragmentation. SGS is capable to run ICS withouth any problems but its questionable will samsung release update. That fragmentation will cost android, now or later but it will damage androids reputation.

The initial excitement has well and truly worn off for me i dunno why but i got it into my head we would have it before xmas and im like meh at this stage, obviously ill flash it but probably about a month or two later the Samsung Galaxy S3 will be released and undoubtedly that will come loaded with ICS so that is the only other phone ill get asides from this, i haven't even flashed another ROM in about 7 weeks a record since i came on here, not even fussed anymore to be honest the phone is running fine as it is and unless something pretty remarkable appears before ICS i doubt i will.

Have to agree with you fella. Not bothered here anymore either

Android 4.0 was officially launched at Ice Cream Sandwich release event on 19 October 2011.The source code for Android 4.0 became available on 14 November 2011.
Isn't it pathetic that Samsung cant release ICS update even for its flagship phone 'Galaxy S2' even after 3.5 months after the official ICS release? With the Android release cycle being 6 to 8 Months, 3.5 to 4 months is a long time for update release.
am I the only one that cant really see that many pro's to ics?? I flashed a few roms with ICS already and its not much different from gingerbread. Having the newest software is nice, but samsung really did a wonderfull job gingerbread.

+1, except that I never had any initial excitement really. Froyo to Gingerbread - while welcome - wasn't earth-shattering in terms of new functions etc, and I can't see GB to ICS titillating me immensely either. Very little I don't like about Gingerbread.
Been on the same ROM for 9 weeks, a new PB (have flashed updates though).
I'll just wait patiently for the SGS3 - Samsung would have to bork it quite spectacularly for me not to buy it.
Looking forward to trying this out, but not expecting the world to change.
Agree with the touch wiz comment.

Isn't it there already as a two step process?:
1. Install another launcher.
2. Select it as the default.

Seriously?
shouldn't a leak arrive earlier? I mean maybe that release date is for kies, progress on the leaks has been quite good, or is it just wishful thinking
It's really pathetic for Sammy's, they're doing it so slow.
We all know that it will be just "Touchwized android 4.0", so why there is such delay in progress?
I would wait without single shout, if
they release it with tw5.0, but, probably, tw5.0 is saved for GS3

I have flashed a few ics roms and there is nothing about it that really blows me away. I really dont know what all the hype is about. I would say that MIUI is without a doubt the best rom out there.

you dont understand. I meant for samsung to keep the default launcher as well as touchwiz.
i'm running ics westcrip's ressurection on my phone and it is a big step up from gingerbread ... give it a whurl ..you might like it...
Interested to see how they implement samsung stuff on top of ICS.
Touchwiz 5 anyone? LOL
Are you living on the moon? There are already tons of ics leaks for the sgs2 with TouchWiz. It looks 90% like gingerbread... And is tw4 not 5

Yeah totally agree. If you haven't flashed miui you don't know what your missing. Google should make it the standard.
