The stylus looks interesting, and I'm keen to know whether it feels "right" as a pen and paper substitute. Can you write on the screen easily without the stylus dragging too much/feeling too slide-y etc? I'm talking purely as using this as pen/paper rather than using handwriting-recognition etc.
Oooh - also, if this is something you were planning to do, I'd be interested to know how Divx/videos look/work over HDMI out
And battery life is always a good Q, although I know it normally takes a week or two to get a feel for this.

I am so hopeful that it will come to the US on AT&T, I'll skip the SGS II for this one! I'm very interested in the stylus and its functions, if you could go over that I'd appreciate it.
Please try to include stuff that other videos don't.
It seems like the videos cover the exact same stuff over and over - it's incredibly boring. I'm close to making my own video actually, if I don't see a review that I like.
Stuff I want to know, for example:
1) Most of the stylus writing demos are stupid. They write 'HELLO' or "BOB' in huge finger paint letters.
That's not how it's supposed to be used. It's supposed to emulate a pad of paper and a pen. Can you write, say, a shopping list on it? Is it comfortable to write on? Does it have enough friction or does the stylus slide all over the place? Is it really noisy and would annoy everyone around you? (plastic vs glass = tap tap tap generally) How comfortable is the stylus?
How well does say, a regular capacitive stylus work? what exact functions will you lose? (pressure sensitivity, screenshot button, anything else?)
2) Show some pocket tests. Show how easily it slides into say, a front jeans pocket. Then sit down. Do jacket pockets, or whatever. People always ask how pocketable it is.
3) Ideally show some useful ways to use the stylus.
There's a demo of some guy circling the weather map and writing 'nice weather'. is anyone really going to do that?
The 'trace an outline to crop'- that's clever. Anything else like that?
A better example is to say, take a screenshot of a map, with buildings circled that you want to visit. I think a stylus is at its best when annotating things like documents or whatever.
4) Does the s-pad scroll, like you are a window above a larger sheet of paper? or is a fixed block?

One thing that I did not see yet is how the applications would look like in 1280x800 and compare to let's say a regular 800x480.

Im interested much on Note, because dont want to have both smartphone and tablet PC, so hope Note can replace both.
Im worry about matter, said on some forum & review: Note as phone is too big but as web browser is too small.
Also with a high price, i worry to buy very expensive but not for daily use product.
Pls give your review how Note is comfortable for the daily use?, Can it completely replace a smartphone and tablet ?

Here is a nice video that shows the note fitting into some jeans. I have seen most of it before, but the pocket demonstration is not till after the 14 minute mark!
BTW, I have a Dell Streak 5" and its actually a little longer than the Note. Fits into my pockets fine, even with Otterbox case...

Why on earth would you want the former?
I have some games on my current phone which don't scale, and appear in the middle. I can't stand it - the controls are impossible. ( i guess since we have the stylus it is okay, but why would you actually want this? It's not like you can open multiple windows)
I'm quite certain the answer to the last question is no - you have to use the camera app (and I beleve the galaxy s 2 is the same way)

Is the touch experience as fluid as galaxy s2? I mean is the stylus an added bonus or a requirement? Did you try throwing it against the wall?

It's a matter of taste, and how you use a phone/tablet.
As far as tablet goes, would you be willing to go down to a 5.3" screen for pocketable 24x7 access? Depends - for example if you read a LOT, maybe you prefer that 7"/10" screen.
As far as replacing your phone goes - it's mostly how big are your hands, and how important is one handed usage? This is a two handed device, like all tablets.

It seems just like a big S2 (I have both), the stylus is a bonus, not needed.
I didn't throw it against the wall, since my S2 has become to small, so I will throw that against the wall.

No, you wont have to I guess.... Until now the Note fits everywhere where the S2 fitted before.

This is just in case the scaling looks odd or in case the app does not launch properly.
The scaling from iphone to ipad apps is quite bad, often I don't use the scaling for iphone apps on ipad so just making sure you can remove scaling if you want to.
Please test the audio quality in headphone out and let us know if its good or atleast any better than galaxy s2.

I tried the Chartcross GPS Test and got without a SIM-Card and deactivated Wifi a fix in under 10 sec!

The Stylus has nearly no friction and is sliding very fast over the glass. A little tap noise is there, but not annoying. Also the Stylus is a little bit small! imho its not very comfortable to write but for me thats ok because I just wanted the big screen

It fits in a front jeans pocket but if you sit down it is visible a litte bit at the top of the pocket!

With the stylus very easy because if you hold the button on the stylus and hold a long tap on the screen it takes a screenshot of the whole screen!

The Stylus works everywhere like a finger, only that it is more accurate for handwriting/drawing! I tried Gmote and it works flawlessly!

On maximum the speaker sound is really loud. It sounds quite well. While watching a video everything sounds loud enough and clear!

hi, guys, Im looking to buy a HTC Advantage but not sure if i should.
Right now i own a Hermes, the only thing bothering me is that if i will be able to use it on trains and stuff, (send emails/sms) since it doesn't have a thumb board like the hermes (the only reason i want the Advantage is bigger screen and CPU 624Mhz), im just wondering if on screen input with your fingers is possible without third party software ?

don't really understand why you ask this. Advantage has a keyboard, which makes it easy to type compare to Hermes. You shouldn't worry about the typing, although it's lacking a number row, the typing is still better then Hermes.
From spect (I don't have it yet) athena far better than hermes

The on-screen keyboard is big enough for your thumb Remember the athena has 5 inch screen, so everything on it is big It covers almost the lower half of the screen.
can one of you guys please post a screen shot ? it would make it a lot easier for me to decide if i actually saw the on screen keyboard

with some time and practice, you can type the hard keyboard without a flat surface easily.

Just checked your question on my Athena, I can tell you the screen keyboard is just 3" (75mm) wide and to do it on the tube with my fingers-impossible without multiple errors. BUT maybe your ring size is like a childs, then maybe you'd succeed. The good news is I tried thumb operate with hardware keyboard and--well lets say I give it the thumbs-up! s'cuse the pun. The magnetic hold is really strong so it aint gonna drop off, you can hold it upside down and shake it, still holds on. Caution don't put it on sensitive magnetic media or it could corrupt data, eg cassette tapes (remember them) hard discs, caddy, laptop etc.
But for a phone/pda your Hermes is a gr8 bit of kit, so compact and useable. I rate the athena as a pda then a phone if you get my drift. Hope you get one and enjoy, also save ur eye strain!

Yes quite practical to type on hard kb with fingers when Athena in hand. The Keyboard is attached by the magnets only. its amazing but however u try to mis-align it, the thing zaps into the right place! only the mag holds it on, nowt else. If the mag wears out after a year I'll also trade in the alternator off my car but have to wait and see

I am currently using a Samsung F480 and I really have to say the difference in the touch screen experience is very much noticeable compared to my HTC Wizard (I'd probably call it Apple-esque - even though I never actually used their phone), however at the very same time I also have to admit that I am really missing the possibilities Windows Mobile offers.
So when I first read about the Touch HD it seemed it would unify all those. Well, meanwhile I found out that the touch screen technology basically remained the same so I'd really be interested to hear how you would actually rate it? Does one still have to press/push the screen or does a simply touch do it as well?
Apart from the touch screen topic I am also a bit uncertain after reading threads like this and in particular vangrieg's posting. How would you rate the overall performance?
Basically what I would be looking for would be a compact phone with a good display, easily extensible (Windows Mobile) and a nice touch screen experience (Apple) ....
i have it for a week now and i am very satisfied with it. Not one program crashed and no reboot so far. Internet browsing is fast and really usable. For the first time ever i really like to surf the net while commuting on the subway. GPS with TomTom7 is great - i locks in seconds even when in downtown surrounded by skyscrapers.
regarding the touchscreen, i find that i have to press really hard to get a reaction. at first i even was reluctant to press so hard because i thought i would break it with the stylus. but now i am glad that it does not react to simple touching because i usually carry it in the pocket of my trousers and touch the display when handling it and it should not react to simple touching in my view - and it does not.
Thanks kkrammer, so you havent noticed respectively cant confirm the lag mentioned by donbronzi and jon- in the indicated thread. I am asking in particular because vangrieg stated the used Qualcomm processor shouldnt be the fastest.
As to the touch screen, this is certainly a subjective matter but personally I really like Samsung's way to respond even to a very very light touch without having to actually press it. So you would say one actually has to press it, a light touch doesnt do it?
Touch HD finger pressure
After owning a Touch Diamond, I feel that the screen is much more responsive. I dont have to press hard at all. I really like it so far. Yes it is a bit bigger and heavier, its still thin. All my programs are working great.

Coming from the Samsung F480 I was almost unable to use it. So how much would you say was the HD improved in this area?
Maybe someone who used Apple's, the F480 and the HD could outline where he/she would see the differences.

i know what you mean about the screen but thats the difference between the two different screen technologies. if you want the ability to use a stylus the phone can only detect it if you push. iphones can measure the current through your finger with a lot less screen pressure.
that said i use rhe advanced configuration tool from the diamond forum to make the screen more sensitive. not as nice as iphone but close

Thanks Marcel, I know Apple's touch screen as well as - probably - the F480's measure via the skin but nonetheless I was "shocked" today when I saw what touching means in terms of the Diamond.
How "close" would you say is the sensitivity you mentioned?
Can someone who has experience with the Wizard and the HD tell if there is an actual difference in the sensitivity.
I'd love to get an HD - even if its price is currently almost prohibitive - but I am not sure whether I'd really like to go back.

its not worth the upgrade in my opinion.
I found you have to push a fair bit harder with the stylus on the screen than with your finger. If you use your finger it responds to a very light touch in comparism and is very responsive.
Thanks, for a real-world example, how hard would one have to press to slide the tabbar on the home screen left and right. Would just placing the finger without actual pressure be enough?

On an iphone I hardly have to touch the screen. As soon as the skin touches, thats enough.
With the HD, if I press the screen, I have to push until the top of my finger squashes by 1mm. Does that makes sense??!
So try pushing on a hard surface so 1mm of your finger squashes...and thats an HD

Somehow my excitement gets colder, unfortunately
F480 has a capacitive screen, just like the iPhone and G1, so the HD would be worse touchy-wise (resistive screen), but according to reviews HD's screen is quite close to iPhone's sensitivity. Anyway, you can't write with the stylus on those and you can on the HD

Well, personally I dont really need a stylus, although the magnetic of the HD makes a precious impression. Anyhow Samsung's screen is what I would really define as touch screen. It would be interesting how close it is, but the 1mm Marcel mentioned doesnt sound too close .... I guess I will have to wait until I can see the HD live.

It is a lot easier to click on links and to type quickly on keyboards as compared to using finger. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against fingers. In fact, 99% of the time I use my device with just fingers. There are times when I feel that stylus is a lot easier. I consider this to be a plus over iPhone actually. I wish iPhone can support both, because then I need not zoom in before activating a link.

I have both the diamond (business phone) and, recently, the HD (personal phone). The HD is a step change in a number of ways. The larger screen, in purely size terms, makes sense of the touchflo interface. Buttons are big, and useable, and I'm rarely (if ever) pulling out the stylus. Also the software itself is faster, more developed (losts of little changes - like answering a call uses a finger gesture, rather than pressing a button - which means you are much less likely to inadvertantly answer an incoming call in your pocket. a little thing, but one of a myriad of significant little changes). The stock ROM is blisteringly fast in comparison (my diamond is the t-mobile version, and a shocker in comparison). Given that they are roughly the same hardware it shows what the diamond may become capable of. The screen is spectacular. The sensitivity (though lacking multi-touch, no biggie for me) feels just right. The battery life literally takes my breath away. I've run it for two lumps of two days, and not yet got the battery below 50%. My diamond corpses after about 24 hours.
It's the best WM device I've had by a country mile, and I've had a few. I still like my diamond, though. It's little and I can look after it much better when I'm out for a riotous night on the town. The HD is big, and until I can get a silicone case for it, it's a dropped smashed phone waiting to happen (I hate having to remove a phone from a case to use it, it massively increases the chance of accidents).

Well, I can talk only for the F480 which actually has Netfront and there you can click links without zooming, even if you have aim well sometimes.
Lets say I am not against a stylus but I am for the touch experience the F480 brings .
Has anyone done testing with a stylus for the A500? If so, what were your thoughts?
I'd like something I can use to either draw quick sketches for photo ideas, or something I can use to jot a quick note here and there (of course, I'd probably need an app that supports handwriting, but those may come in time).
I purchased a Targus stylus today. Having come from the old pre-capacitive days when the stylus is hard, the new stylus' seemed a little odd but I must say the control is very good. Pin point accuracy - excellent for drawing.

I saw another stylus somewhere online that is supposed to give you even finer control and allow you to actually see exactly where the stylus is touching the screen, but now I can't find where I saw it. I'm thinking about giving the new one a shot too, if I can find it again. ;-)

I have one and it works very well in general. The only issue is getting it at the right angle with the screen - particularly if you have the screen at an angle. But I like it better than the rubber tipped ones.
I bought the Boxwave stylus. I like it a lot. However it doesn't always catch it, sometimes it clicks on a screen I don't want or am scrolling through. But other than that, I am very happy with it for detailed work. My fingers get sweaty on occasion and I have a hard time using the screen when they are like that. So the stylus is a nice addition to have, especially if you don't like fingerprints.
I do wonder if it will somehow mess up the screen though later on.
Just curious, is there any way to get hand writing recognition to work? So for instance, if I bought one of these stylus's, would I be able to use it and forgo the need for an on screen keyboard?

I'm using flexT9 app which has peninput, but its not perfect, the capacitive stylus is more like big stick then a pen
Can anyone recommend a stylus that's got more of a penpoint tip rather than something the size of a finger?
With a capacitive screen I don't think something like this exists. Although I was in a meeting today with somebody taking notes on an I pad, not sure how they were doing that.
I own this stylus and I really like it. This is the only stylus I have used so I cannot compare it to anything.

I got word yesterday that Acer is releasing one specifically for the A500. I will get more information and keep everyone posted.
I'm getting behind on everything as I had to go out of town for a few days on a business trip. Also, prototype custom Iconia case ships to me today for a review and should be available stateside after the 26th. It's similar to the FUSE.
I also use a Targus stylus for iPad as it was called.
Has a soft rubber tip, but works great on my device.
I have a griffin made for the Ipad but works on all my Android touch screens

Going to try the DIY thing as it looks super accurate. If fails I'll be buying this one

Youtube dagi stylus and you will see magic
my gf works at best buy and she got me the Rocketfish (best buy brand) stylus for 2 bucks lol. it works great with the iconia and ipads.

But I do enjoy my hair stylists She rocks.geeky girls can look hot as well.giggles

Hey just had afew questions regarding the tablet and searching didn't answer them that well.
1. what is the best stylus to use when taking maths notes/ doing past paper questions. I thought a plastic nib one would be better but cant seem to find any?
2. are the more expensive stylus better?
3. is a tablet really worth it for doing maths/notes on. currently I use a pen and paper but Im disorganised and loose them within a week. I somehow don't think i could loose a tablet

Try Tabnotes, a trial is available on the market and you can use squared maths paper as one of the paper settings.
I am using the Bamboo Stylus from Wacom, although it is quite expensive, it seems to be the best stylus for the Tablet. Boxwave come a close second.

I only have some inexpensive iPad / iPhone styli. they work very well with my other 10" tablet with a capacitive touch screen. While they work on my ASUS Transformer, they are not as sensitive as my real finger. What that means is that applying the same touch with a stylus may not register as nicely as a finger. Is that because I have rather large hands and relatively large fingers, while the rubbery finger on these styli are smaller than a child's finger? I just don't know. What it means is that I prefer my real fingers on my ASUS, while a stylus is prefered for my Archos. Maybe that Wacom stylus is the answer for an ASUS, while an Archos will work with just about anything.

I tried both the nub type (boxwave) and the plastic type (DAGI).
I think they both suck compared to paper or a true digitizer. Honestly it wasn't worth it for me...the letters are all fat and you can't fit them anywhere...also sometimes it skips...like when you are trying to do a lower case a...it looks fragmented and funky.
Also, when i write my palm is wresting on the device and it confuses it. So I have to put my hand in an awkward/tiring position.
maybe it is just my writing style though.

HasC - o...m...g. That looks awesome. Completely different from what I've experienced. How do you hold your pen? All I can say is wow. As soon as my replacement 16gb comes in and if it isn't disfunctional like my last two...I'm buying the bamboo.

You can hold the pen normally, the only difference being that you cant rest your palm on the TF however what you need to bear in mind is that Tabnotes has a unique note entry system where you can position a block where you would like the text to start and a writing area is displayed at the bottom which you would use to write your notes.
As your notes are written, they are transferred to the writing area, this is excellent as it allows you to write slightly larger than normal and you handwritten notes get transferred to the writing area to a size that you determine by picking a pen size. There is another option that you can pick that allows you to draw freehand which makes this app so flexible.
The best thing since I wrote the review is that after the 3.1 update, the screen sensitivity has improved which makes writing even easier and I would say that it is on par with my DHD or even the IPad2.

No problems, that's what we are here for on this forum, glad to be able to help.
I am NOT very happy with my S-Pen because I have to press REALLY hard before the S-Pen touch register on the screen.
This makes the following very hard to do and not practical:
- Taking notes: kinda hard trying to take notes when I have to keep "jabbing" the screen really hard
- Drawing: forget about the pressure sensitive feature, there is only one for me --> press really hard!
I tried replacing the S-Pen (bought one from my local Fry's Electronics), no go.
How about you? Can you use the S-Pen on practical day-to-day basis...or this is just another "gimmick" for you?
I don't have to press any harder than I would with paper and a pencil. Although even now and again it will stop writing, like show a space between two lines because I didn't press hard enough. A lot of peoples are apparently too sensitive sometimes and will start to write above the screen... Samsung seems to have screwed up a few things with the note

Looks like you have a problems with touch screen.
I try to use it. But always end up shoving it back in it's holder and just tapping out texts the old way.
Find it difficult to write with anyway, it doesn't flow naturally and seems a little behind all the time. Not got use to how fast or slow to use it.
The S pen is ok. Its not as good as I thought it was and I actually only use it to make rage comics and post them on 9gag.

My Problem is as follow :
There are 2 zones in my screen that don't respond to the pen at the First time,
I attached 2 screenshots showing :
The First with the blank untouchable 2 zones,
The second, is the same try, but I added some drawings later with my finger.
So this means that my screen is OK, and May be something is wrong with the S pen.
Any body experienced the same issue?

My S Pen works fine for writing and drawing. It's basically the same as writing with a pen for me in terms of pressure. Granted, it is thinner and a little less friction on the surface than pen and paper.
I write a lot on whiteboards for work and it is a little similar to that for me. When writing on a whiteboard, you don't anchor your hand on the surface like you would with paper.
Sometimes if I want to draw very accurately, I will anchor my writing hand on the fingers of the hand holding the phone that stick out from the right hand side. But I find writing like this slower.
I use the S Pen a lot more than I though I would before I bought it. I originally thought it would be a gimmick and just wanted the big screen, but I use it a lot for taking handwritten notes in FreeNote+ (I find this quicker than dealing with text conversion and auto-correction) and also find it a lot more accurate for drawing and photo editing.
I also find myself using it for Swype quite a lot. It's quicker than using my fingers. I think because there's less friction and you have a longer reach, so you hand doesn't actually have to move as much.
Also, the accuracy is excellent for some games like Fruit Ninja and Deer Hunter.
It works well for me. Though, need to get a bit of used to.
I use it mainly for taking notes...
I use mine when I am wearing gloves. No need to remove them.
I use it for taking notes an play DrawSomething! I love it. Everybody prases my drawings and at several iPhone players say they envy my Note and wish they had one

Those who enjoy using the on, do you see any issue with it? I.e. Pen not registering in screen, must press hard, etc.

I find the S-Pen incredibly useful whenever you want to write something down on the go.
I find it much faster to take out my phone and launch a smartly-placed app to start taking a quick note (phone number, adress, any work-related post-it...) rather than searching your pockets for something to write on and asking for a pen (though i still always carry one on me )
The trick is then to process the notes and not just leave them in that folder you never go to. Well, that just takes a little discipline.
As for good apps, i've only tried a few but i think the first important thing to look out for in such an app is it's capacity to transform you're wavery note-taking skills into a nice smooth handwritten text on the screen. The S-Memo tool does it pretty well but i would recommend something more like Papyrus (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1580716&highlight=papyrus) which has some pretty useful vector-imaging capabilities.
EDIT : I forgot to add that the s-pen is meant to work without pressure on the phone (though it still requires a minimum of contact), and works flawlessly on mine (i don't use cases or covers to protect the phone, i just take care of it.). Anyone needing to press hard on their phone for the s-pen to work has a problem, either with the phone or the pen. Consider having it checked.
I don't use it for all tasks, because that would just make things much harder. It's good for playing basic games though, like Draw Something, or just any other game where it feels better to use the S-Pen.

No, I don't have such problem. Sometimes, I find it a bit sensitive than I had hoped.
If you have to press REALLY hard for it to register, it might be a good idea to go to a shop and test one out to see if it's the same as your unit.
Maybe try and test their S Pen with your phone to see if it's a problem with the S Pen or the screen.
I think the spen is to small for 1 handed users. But works perfectly fine for all spen activities.
