Nexus Prime Pictures Leaked: No onscreen buttons, 720p screen - Epic 4G General

Looks pretty slick. So excited for the Nexus Prime and Google event next week with Apple's event today being a total snooze

Interesting, thanks sir.

U no likey the iphone ? LOL

Awesome. Very nearly iPhone 4 ppi on 4.6 inches and its SAMOLED AND its 720p. I really hope this leak is real cause I'm sold on the display alone. I only hope the next nexus doesn't do away with the sd card slot >_<

Same. Super excited about the 720p screen. Considering my laptop is 15" and 1280x800 its quite astonishing how far screen technology evolved :\ Although apparently its still pentile but considering my Epic is already pentile I think I should be fine.

What I want:
1.5 GHz Dual Core (or even quad-core? maybe too early still)
10-12 MP Camera (There is an android phone expected to have a 12 MP camera soon, so it would be cool to see the NP have one)
720p display (which seems confirmed)
4.5-4.65" display (which is also likely)
BETTER BATTERY LIFE? (2000 mAh??!!?)
ICS will bring a huge update to the OS, but most likely UI which is cool
Anyone else agree?

Lol Galaxy S II already blows iPhone 4S out of the water:

I would agree with this for the most part. I don't think we'll see a quad-core in this guy quite yet. As for the camera, MP is only a fraction of what makes a good camera. I personally believe the camera on the Epic is pretty rock solid for a phone.
I think once you get over a 4.5" screen, it's getting to be too big for a phone. I would like to see it no more than 4.5". However, even with the lack of buttons, I'm surprised at how much 'dead' space there is at the bottom of the phone. I figured without the buttons, they would be able to utilize about the whole front as the screen. They can put the carrier branding crap on the back.
Not only would I like to see a bigger capacity battery, but I'm guessing ICS probably has some good things in it which will improve batter life as it is.
If this thing comes to Sprint, it shall be my next phone, without question!

Yeah the biggest issue being Verizon will probably be the first to get it.... My upgrade is available yet I have to wait more... /firstworldproblems

Will someone please tell me where all these ridiculous rumors that Verizon will get any exclusivity on the next Nexus came from? Let's stack up the evidence:
1) Verizon to this date is the ONLY carrier who does not currently have even 1 Nexus phone.
2) Verizon actively refused these phones because they couldn't ruin them with bloat; a factor that has not changed.
2a. The Nexus phones aren't crazy big sellers and thus wouldn't change Verizon's decision, especially not enough to make them pay for exclusivity.
3) Google is crazy in bed with Sprint right now with Google Wallet and Google Voice being exclusive services currently.
4) Google just tricked the Nexus lines current customers into signing 2 year contracts with T Mobile and Sprint; why would they intentionally screw developers by making it so they can't get this Nexus device without an ETF?
Evidence FOR Verizon exclusivity:
1) the words "Droid" and "Prime" were once seen written on the same line of text? And there is absolutely no proof that that phone exists or is not just a bloated Nexus variant.

They seem to be sticking to the shape of the OG Nexus. Does anyone know if it will have no SD card slot and be all internal memory? I remember when people thought the OG Nexus would be dual core as well. I will wait for iron clad proof that its coming to Sprint and has at least a bigger battery and more powerful processor because that screen has got to use more battery

This was true, until Sprint went and dumped $20B towards Apple. I really hope that didn't piss off Google too much. If I were getting cozy with someone and they went and did something like that, I would seriously have to reconsider my association/partnership with them.

And I would consider that compelling evidence against exclusivity on sprint as well. The decision for which carriers were getting this was made months ago and its unlikely that sprint was talking to google about buying the iphone all the way back then.

Engadget: Epic 4G review, EVO still #1

from http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/16/epic-4g-review
"So is it the right phone for the job? In a word, yes -- the Epic 4G is a great device. Killer, even. Nothing speaks to us more strongly during the course of a review than finishing it and saying, "alright, I'm ready to buy this thing," and the Epic is on the short list of phones that has managed to do it. More than its Galaxy S siblings, it feels like the Epic has overcome its shortcomings -- notably the forgettable UI skin -- to shine, and it's a phone we could easily imagine using day to day. Only thing is, the EVO is also on that short list for us -- and the better camera, bigger screen, and $50 savings versus the Epic still make it our winner in this 4G shootout, though only by the thinnest of margins. Needless to say, if you need a physical keyboard and you're looking for the one of the most musclebound Android phones money can buy, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it."
I've been thinking about switching over to the Epic but the GPS problems found on all the Galaxy S phones along with Samsung's bad reputation for slow if any updates make me really appreciate how awesome the Evo/HTC really is

But the Evo and iPhone 4 got the same score.
They really aren't as bad as some other news blogs out there (Gizmodo).
How many Epic threads do we need in an Evo forum? Are we going to have a separate thread for the Gizmodo review?
i played with a epic today, i wont be switching from my evo...
Engadget? -- Really? -- They're not even fully aware of GPS problems that are affecting the Galaxy S line of phones -- in short, completely disregard their reviews because -- Engadget isn't playing with a full deck -- don't let your love for HTC cloud your objectivity.
Hopefully I used -- enough.

The Gizmodo article needs its own thread actually...unlike this one..I mean in the Gizmodo article..now don't get a heart attack...only time it compared the Epic to the iphone 4 was to say that the Epic is better at it...when I saw that my jaw dropped....if anyone doesn't believe me read the article...
That said samsung said GPS will be fixed in September..so thats withing the 30 days of the Epic..so if necessary it ca be returned if GPS is a concern.
As for the Engadget review..only reason it got an 8/10 over a 9/10 was due to the 50$ extra..so its not that its a worse phone.it just costs 50$ more...

They amended the review at Engadget after talking to Samsung. The Epic ships with AGPS turned off. Once it was activated, they said things look fine.
Apparently google is requiring this to be off by default now. Must be a privacy thing, because I can't see a logical reason to reduce functionality otherwise.
Most buyers will never turn it on, and will assume their phone navigation sucks.
We see who is lurking in the background:

Considering the Epic *****ing when the evo was released about all the bone headed issues HTC still have not fixed I don't think anyone can point a finger at samsung. The Epic is slated for 2.2 in September and a GPS fix.
Without root and custom roms the EVO, for a power user, is a POS.
Talk about construction issues. Different parts of varying capability and quality. Different screens, different multitouch sensors etc its like they took all the extra parts they had lying around and stuffed them into the cases.
Light leakage, screens lifting etc... FPS fix? SD cards corrupted? Touch input lag? Grounding issues? Thank God for XDA and some updates.
The EVO shipped with far more wrong that the epic. This is coming from an EVO owner. If the worst thing wrong with the Samsung is a GPS issue that will get fixed and touch wiz lag (Which you can remove without a custom rom unlike HTC sense) then they are a few steps ahead of where we were at release.
Also it seems the 1gb of storage may entirely be NAND fixing the app lag from the vibrant and other Galaxy S devices. From Slash gear's review:
Happily, while use of the Galaxy S series was punctuated with freezes and pauses, anecdotally blamed upon the handsets’ use of an internal microSD card for their onboard storage, the Epic 4G seems generally free of such lag.
Click to collapse
It's still "Internal SD" from what I can see, we (Captivate/Vibrant) don't have the newer firmware (yet) that eliminates lag when going back to the homescreen or when opening apps.
Got a chance to compare them side by side today and I have to say I highly prefer the EVO, the Samsung has a smaller screen yet the device is bigger and bulkier than the EVO. The UI looks like something designed by a 5 year old with a box of crayons. I guess if you really need a hard keyboard the Epic would be the only route you can take but the keyboard works great on the EVO so I actually prefer the slimmer device rather than a bulky 90's esque slide out keyboard phone. I honestly can't fathom why anyone would want an Epic over an EVO but I imagine some Epic owners feel the same way about the EVO. Regardless there is not a snowballs chance in hell I would ever own an Epic over an EVO The only other phone I might choos is iPhone 4 but with it's tiny screen and lack of widgets the whole thing just seems like outdated technology, I think Apple has alot of catching up to do to win me back from the EVO/Android.

agreed, i played with our demo epic all day today, and honestly, im not that impressed. It is a VERY nice screen, but as stated all over, colors look highly over saturated, and text is grainy because of it. I am envious of the 60fps when scrolling through menus, but thats ALL. Touchwiz is a JOKE. The capacitive android buttons work when they want to, cameras are much lower quality, and the screen is smaller. MY unbiased opinion? I think the epic is better for the GENERAL public out of the box vs the evo. That being said, For us XDA people, The evo is still the clear winner. Ill take my over clocked custom rom'd up ass evo ANYDAY over the epic. GO HTC!

"Oversaturated"? Riiight. I'm guessing those true black levels are highly exaggerated too.
I am within 30 days of return date for my evo and was considering making the switch but the reviews make it easier for me to stick to the evo
With fresh Rom and havs kernel my battery life is fine and I don't really think I would ever use the horizontal hardware keyboard
If it was a vertical keyboard maybe since id be able to use it one handed
The screen is nice but from looking at the vibrant it had a blueish hue I did not care for. Additionally the pentile matrix display made text a bit tough to read from anything but zoomed in levels

First introduced just last year on the Wave, it feels like Super AMOLED was just starting to get its sea legs... but here we go again: Samsung's latest handset -- announced today in collaboration with AT&T at CES -- is the first to tout "Super AMOLED Plus" technology that features a 50 percent boost in sub-pixel count, promising improvements both in contrast and outdoor readability. Maybe more importantly, the display clocks in at a whopping 4.5 inches, besting HTC's 4.3-inch range (the EVO 4G, Desire HD, and likely the Thunderbolt) without getting dangerously close to Dell Streak territory. It's got an 8 megapixel camera on back paired with a 1.3 megapixel shooter up front, a 1.2GHz single-core Hummingbird processor, and still somehow promises to be the thinnest smartphone on AT&T when it launches at a to-be-determined date. Now, the controversy: despite the name, the Infuse 4G apparently doesn't have a hint of LTE -- it's HSPA+, which means AT&T's now playing the same game as T-Mobile.
We've had a brief chance to play with an early Infuse 4G dummy unit, so we weren't able to turn it on, but we got a pretty good impression of how it feels. Basically, we came away encouraged that 4.5 inches isn't going to feel too big for practical use -- if you're accustomed to something like an EVO, you probably won't skip a beat (that's undoubtedly due in part to the fact that the Infuse seems to be quite a bit thinner). We're told the tastefully textured matte rear cover that we saw wasn't final, but we're crossing our fingers that

No disrespect meant towards the OP but, F samsung. They aren't getting any more of my money.
Specs-wise, it's an incremental upgrade at best. We could easily overclock our chips to 1.2 GHz if we wanted to. I am surprised really, that it didn't come with a dual core ARM Cortex A9 CPU. I doubt that the camera will be much better (remember megapixels != quality).
The only thing that is really tempting is the screen, which now uses the RGB layout. Otherwise, it's not worth upgrading to. Upgrade when your phone is significantly weaker than the status quo, or else you're constantly going to be spending big.

hmm, a retina display with better cpu/gpu, better app market, better front and back camera, and overall 10x better as hardware and software (minus the ****ty at&t network) or an old outdated cpu/gpu, with a pretty bad app market, and ****ty cameras.
hmm thats a hard one. If someone figures out a way to "unlock" it to work on sprint, im jumping it asap. Unless sprint has something up their sleeves like the motorola atrix, which i doubt.
Also i never said that people should switch to verizon. Hence why i posted:

Yeah have you ever been to an Iphone forum? They act like the iphone is god's work and every other phone is just trying to copy.
I'm guessing you're comparing the Evo/Iphone.
The camera app actually has many more functions than an Iphone camera. From contrast/saturation/brightness levels to ISO levels, we have quite a bit of customization there. The camera is as good as the person using it.
We also have some camera replacement apps (as well as messaging app replacements and widget replacements and keyboard replacements... )
Retina display is all Steve Job's bs crap. No one cared about pixels until he mentioned it. Have you used a magnifying glass to read text on your phone and find all the pixels?
I'd rather have a bigger screened phone. I don't know how anyone can go from 4.3" to 3.5", lol. I can't even drop down to 4.0" for some of these new phones coming out.
Better cpu? Eh, snapdragon is fast enough on the CPU side.
GPU? Sucks...
But if you're comparing any of the newer phones such as the newer GPUs by HTC and the Galaxy line by Samsung, then it beats the iphone.
App market? We have SOOOO many more free apps... period. I rarely buy apps. The App store is filled with soooo many 99c crapps. Until recently, they have been getting priority with companies. Nowadays, many new apps are built for android/iphone both simply because of the marketshare.
Though I do commend Apple on keeping their product line so simple... they can create the thinnest phone with the biggest battery and everyone buys it.
Other companies need to learn from that. HTC pumps out new phones like no other. Phones get lost with all these random names like Desire, Eris, Incredible, Hero, Evo... not to techies, but to regular users.
Woooah rant. Fed troll. :/
The retina display is so much clearer than super amoled, or any other android screen on the market (right now)
The iphone is so much snappier than my evo, even with me running CM6. Everything on the iphone is faster. One thing i really noticed was how fast photos upload. In order for me to look at my pictures on my sd card, it takes 10 seconds to see one photo (might be exaggerated by a couple of seconds), but on the iphone you click on gallery, and the photos are there.
The app store on mac products also has apps for basically everything. Android is finally catching up..and im proud of them. However, it will take a while before they have the amount of apps that are as good as iphone. I would rather pay 99 cents for an app than not have an option for it at all.
My opinion is that a iPhone is a toy its a ipod touch really with more specs I'd rather have a phone that looks different from. Every apple product all there touch products look the same
To me that's my opinion

[Q] Is the Atrix worth leaving the Inspire?

I'm sure there are threads out there on this already, so I will make it short.
With the problems that the inspire has (bad internal antenna, sound quality, and so forth) is it worth switching to the Atrix, or should I head towards a different device? AT&T is pushing me for an early upgrade as I've exchanged 4 of the inspires for different reasons, and I'm not about to buy a phone that has a ton of issues.
Any info is greatly appreciated.
And, to add to it, I'm looking at the new Samsung Infuse, and the Captivate as a potential replacement. No reason to go back to a "regular" phone...
Sent from my Inspire using XDA App
Well the captivate is really outdated, and soon will the inspire will be to, the atrix is more future proof than both those phones
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
It is. It's all around better. No Sense, either. Lol
I owned an Inspire for a while and couldn't stand it. I'm happy with the Atrix.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I would go with atrix. I would stay away from phones that utilize amoled screens because of their inability to display whites correctly, huge power consumption when displaying any color other than black, burn in issues and color oversaturation.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk
If you're happy to unlock BL and flash custom ROM then hell yes go for it. The hardware is excellent for the price and considerably futureproof (dual core 1Gb RAM = enough grunt for foreseeable future). It also has my ideal form factor (4").
However in its stock state I would recommend pretty much any other dual core phone aside from the LG2X. You'd be surprised how few people realise its dual core based on their impressions of the speed of the default launcher/home (ie its not that great unlike the immediate WOAH of SGS2 stock or the glitz of sense). Other minor niggles IMO include slightly buggy bluetooth (compared to my other droids), , power/usb is on the left, not bottom, and if you don't actually use the fingerprint reader feature, the power button placement is less than ideal.
Like I said thou once you custom ROM/kernel it absolutely flies
However to each their own, maybe you like motoblur (if I was addicted to social media I could see myself liking it a lot more) and don't mind the AT&T restrictions (no native SIP, have to pay for tethering).
Yep, bought one outright off contract today. Well worth it.
Stay away from Captivate
1. The Motorola Atrix is the best smart phone I ever had
2. The Samsung Captivate was the worst piece of crap I ever had. Went through 3 of them before finally giving up. Stay away from this one.

Well you're asking in atrix forum, so HE'LL NO, don't go for it. All jokes aside, its a worthy successor to The nexus one. Surprised me. Slcd is impressive. And blinding at lowest brightness. And once you unlock bootloader and root it, the least you can do is flash a stock rom minus some of the bloat to get your toes wet on how capable it is.

Atrix doesn't have any major issues if you ask me (antenna, sound quality are all great).
+ We have an unlocked bootloader and CM7 on the way. With vanilla android Atrix will be amazingly future proof.
Go for the ATRIX. Its totally worth the 4g and dual cores.

I have both atrix and inspire... The inspire has a much nicer ui tons of custom roms let's just say tons of eye candy it runs smoothly when overclocked mine is at 1.3ghz but can go up to 1.8ghz... Battery life sucks but can be tweaked for example my phone when asleep runs at a little over 300mhz and when on runs at 1.3ghz so it gives a full day with moderate use gps is the second best I've seen 1st being the Atrix of course solid build some say feels too heavy.. I like it.
My atrix like many people said is more future proof ui not so pretty great loud speaker comparable to the blackberry bold 9000 awesome GPS can't be beat by any mobile phone qhd display if you like that icons and keyboard seem soooo small after using the inspire for a while picture quality is grainy compared to inspire which is 8mp looks like iphone quality HD recording too me seems smoother on atrix... With the ui on the inspire it seems to do more then blur... Sense is integrated more with facebook and twitter in every aspect.. Sound on the headset on both devices are loud and clear so it's basically comes down to what you like
Here are some pictures to compare same lighting same distance secs apart of each other

worth it. it's a different level than the inspire. high resolution qhd display (ebooks look gorgeous with all those pixels crammed in), first dual core in a smart phone, 4g, high capacity battery. i believe i read that it is the biggest on a smart phone to date.the specs alone put inspire down hard. and on top of that active indie devs? go for it dude.
don't let that massive screen on the infuse hypnotize you. compare the actual display resolution. a full web page renders better on atrix than anything else att offers
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Atrix is also the only phone with a 1gb ram to this date also although stock it isn't utilized install a custom kernel and wham its so fast its hard, even frustrating to use any other device!

I left the inspire for the atrix. Don't regret it at all. Love this damn phone.
Sent via the power of a unicorn's horn.
First of all, you're asking this in an Atrix Forum so I can only guess what most responses are going to be ; )
But seriously, I originally had an Inspire and I can honestly say that the Atrix has better functionality with battery life, screen resolution, call quality, etc. I would stay away from the Infuse since it has been rumored that AT&T's SGS2 variant should be out this month and they might also be offering a model with a pretty damn good looking keyboard on it as well.
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/07/26/atts-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-outed-with-keyboard-in-tow/
(Note: the article is old and they have since confirmed that the phone pictured is NOT the SGS2 but rather a secondary model that may or may not be launched)

Coming from a Nexus One, I tried an Infuse before I got the Atrix. It was slower than the N1, and it always lowered the brightness when used outdoors because of heat.
Happily returned it for an Atrix after it was released. Haven't looked back.

Opinions on HTC Desire Z/G2

I'm looking to buy a Desire Z as a gift, and wanted to get some second opinions on the phone. Is the keyboard decent? What's the speed like? How sturdy is the keyboard hinge?
Also, is it fairly easy to root?
I've got an original Desire myself so if it's a roughly similar experience to that but with a keyboard then that'll be good.
Cheers
It's a great phone, 2nd Gen Snapdragon, Adreno 205 GPU...but it is also fairly late in it's life. The keyboard is great, and while people have differing opinions on the hinge, I haven't had any problems.
Just know that it doesn't hold a candle to the 1GB Ram/Dual Core beasts being released today.
Sent from my T-mobile G2 using Tapatalk
The hinge problem has been previously blown up, it is fine.
I couldn't imagine living and typing longer than an sms without a keyboard, I still love it and use it for longer input. If I was buying a phone now I probably could sacrifice the keyboard for a front camera or more CPU power or so. I could even buy a Desire S or a Sensation (just to be in this pricerange). Phones change quickly, quadband is here, I still love this phone.

in my opinion its still a great phone... sure there are better ones out now rooting isn´t that easy, but not very hard too (if you know how to use adb, you are fine) If you are on 2.3+ it could happen that you need to create a goldcard while rooting...
...what rather concerns me right now is the fact that a lot of people seem to have a problem with a fried emmc chip.
here is a link to the wiki-guide for rooting (so you see how its done):

Thanks. Dual core and that isn't a concern, the intended owner is not really fussed about those kind of things, having a keyboard is more important, and I trust HTC as a brand.
Have ordered one now.

I sure wish you could NAME a better phone that is out now!
Remember, it must have the reliability, style, and expensive feel of the G2, must have a great hardware (real) keyboard and beautiful gorilla glass screen like G2, and must be root/developer friendly, have removable battery, and it must provide wifi calling in my weak signal area and free tethering and portable wifi hotspot, and do all of this for US$60/month no-contract service with unlimited 4G everything and no overage charges possible like my G2!
what better one ya got that does all of that?

I concur, there is nothing else out there I could see me replacing it with at the moment. I need a hardware keyboard.. More ram and a faster CPU would be handy though... Refreshed DZ required
Great phone, and i will use this as long as it works. I'v had this about little over 11months now, no problems. Only thing is, screen has one frozen pixel in it, tough it's on the side, close to a corner so i barely even notice it, if i look for it, i can see it.
There is Motorola Droid 4 coming, sure looks nice whit that 5-row qwerty. If i would have waited a year longer to upgrade to smartphone world, id get it when it comes.
Now i'm planing on getting a tablet, to get the horsepower going on android. possibly transformer prime, or smth, wonder what CES brings to the table.
I love this phone! Sorry i got drifted to little off topic here.
I won't get another phone until there is a worthy successor. I would like to stick with HTC and I need a qwerty KB (well strongly prefer to have one) so here is hoping for a G3 sometime soon.
Until then though I still get great performance so no immediate rush.
There was also a Samsung qwerty slider I was reading about a while back, can't seem to find the article anymore.

I agree with flinny if they can refresh desire z 2 aka htc t-mobile g3 with stock in usa. I would love to have front face camera,1gb of ram i hate using my mirror to video chat. Get amoled screen back like nexus one. Add the hardware 5 key rows they had on g1 to g3 .
Hopefully stop selling to many damn Htc phone their selling about 10-15 device every year i wish they can stay with 3-5. Limited their work because then they make users like me hack my phone to get update, that they should be doing themselves. Instead of making excuses on why they cant update 1 device to the other.

Looked very interesting to me at first, but reviews have been far from stellar:
http://techcrunch.com/2011/11/20/review-samsung-captivate-glide-att/
Looks like cheap exterior build quality, and crappy flat keyboard. Nice screen, but hardware specs are merely ok compared to other high end phones currently being released. A Galaxy IIS spec phone with decent keyboard would be killer. But this ain't that.
Can't any manufacturers come out with a high-spec phone, with a decent keyboard?
