Screen completely cracked! - EVO 4G General

I just dropped my phone and the screen cracked completely. I'm under full warranty and wondering
what I should do. I've had this phone over a year though.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium

under full warranty meaning...??? if you have never had a courtesy repair done in a S&R corp store, i would suggest trying that before going online and buying parts. unless your handy like some of us and u want to do that most of the time you'll get the one tech that says no but if you get lucky you might get one that doesnt mind actually working on a phone. imho it wouldnt hurt to try that. just ask for a courtesy repair and if they say no, well then on to parts-hunting lol sorry

sorry but I am confused why do you need anyone here to tell you what to do. Its your phone and what are your choices really. They all consist of you spending money so figure out which one is the cheapest for you. Not exactly a community problem in my eyes but more you and your pockets.
Good luck....

You could get a replacement digitizer off amazon and then put it in yourself. I just did that to my tbolt and it works fine and looks great. 30 bucks is a lot cheaper than 100.
Sent from my Evo.

Okay so i just broke the actual glass. the touch inputs and everything work fine. what part of the screen is that exactly? Also if its the digitizer, i found there is two versions. One's more narrow and one's wider. I have hardware rev 003. which one would i have to get?

The narrow one might be for EVO3D?

I cracked my screen once and it looked like a honeycomb. I have insurance under sprint though I think it's about 8 dollars a month and they replaced the screen with no charge.

They won't fix mine cause its bigger then an inch. It's a bogus system imo. They claim accidental damage is covered and everything...to a degree. Anything too bad is a "claim" and requires a deductible. Ugh either way the screen gets replaced...no F' in difference

Exactly. Big crack or small crack, screen gets replaced either way. What's the big deal?

You'll need to disassemble the phone to find out whether you have the wide or narrow cable. All hardware revisions have either a wide or narrow cable, and it doesn't depend on which type of display you have either, unfortunately.

Here are some pics of my phone opened.

Damn, I have TWICE in the last year had my screen completely shattered as yours, and just took it to sprint repair center (rooted and all), .....30 min later I had a completely new-feeling phone. Replaced screen and bezel.
I've had screen replaced 2 or 3 times, camera lens replaced, earpiece-speaker replaced twice. All on the same evo I bought on launch day.
I don't understand why they gave you any hassle. You try taking it to a different sprint store?

Someone told me the digitizer only has one size

Related

It finally happened. :(

The glass on my camera lens broke and i didn't even drop the phone -_-... lol it doesn't really affect picture quality but I would like to fix it anyways. Has anyone gone to Sprint with this problem? Will I have to pay the 35 to fix it or will they fix that for free because if its 35$ idk how worth it that is.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
If you have service and repair coverage on the phone, it will be repaired or replaced for free. If not, you would have to pay the $35 convenience fee to sprint for the repair.
Damn that sucks and I was actually planning on going to put the insurance on my evo this week. Would they let me put the insurance on then fix it lol?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
actually you can do that. but you need to wait one-billing cycle. if you think you can endure it for a month.
I have the same issue and the guy at the Sprint store said they don't repair the lens.
Here's how to fix it temporarily:
Take out back cover
Take the lens cover off (I stuck a pen and removed it)
Blow hard into the lens to take out any dust
Take some clear scotch tape and run the tape over the lens and the battery
Place back cover back on phone.
Pictures should look better than they did with the lens cover on it. Looking at it you won't even notice it's tape. You may have to do this process every month since the tape may get old and scratched.
What! They don't fix it that sounds horrible I'm gonna have to go in and find out if that's every store. If not its not a major issue the cracks aren't horrible and luckily don't go right thru the middle so the camera still gets good shots and no dust gets inside but I fear it might get worse. I will go to the store and find out after school and let u guys know what they tell me.

1 month doesn't sound bad I can hold off if they are willing to fix it

You can only add insurance 30 days from purchase date.
I just noticed that I managed to crack the plastic over the camera lens on my Evo...probably because I put it in my back pocket and sat on it. I called my local Sprint store, and was told that they would repair it. I'll take it in in a couple of days.

Actually a guy I work with took his Evo in for a cracked lense and the tech replaced it for free (without insurance) and stated that it happens all the time. That was here in Vegas.

And the camera lens cover should be part of the back assembly half with the speaker, USB/stereo ports, which means they can definitely replace this because they changed mine just last month.
So the clear tape pix look better than with the stock lens?

Insurance is supposed to be added 30 days from time of purchase or you might just get a rep that just adds it over the phone. Also as soon as you add insurance you can go into the store and get it fixed you dont have to wait 30 days. Or you can just go into the store and pay the repair cost of $35 than add insurance once the phone is fixed or replaced.

That is absolutely not true. I am on Sero Premium, which requires apparently some special activation process that my sprint store didn't know about. 3 TEP replacements in a week all with "non functional radios" (ie they didn't activate it correctly), all refurbs. Finally they figured it out and just replaced the screen on my original epic with parts cannibalized from one of my 3 TEP replacements.
My first replacement was new dunno Whuts gonna happen this time I. Don't want a broke down ****box LOL I honestly want to trade it for an evo

The fact that the Epic's screen is super strong didn't deter me from getting a screen protector. I get upset for the inevitable air bubble(s) stuck inside the seal. Can't imagine how I'd get if I scratched the screen. I am truly sorry for the scratch :*(
If it's any consolation I'd almost trade a scratch (the Gorilla Glass is amazing) for the physical defects my Epic *does* have: chipped chrome, a flaking edge around the side of the plastic rim that superglue can't seem to fully stop and most of all screen burn in from the damn status bar. I'm wondering how easy or difficult it'll be to use TEP to get a refurb or if I should even bother.
i got a scratch like a week after i bought my epic
i dont even know how. one day i took it out my pocket and it had a big scratch.
I coulda sworn there was gorilla glass on this phone but either there isnt or gorilla glass is ass
especially since my epic always has a dedicated pocket. i never put my electronics with anything else.
I had my hero for a year and the screen never got scratched. EVERYTHING else did, but not the screen lol i even dropped it in train tracks and when i picked it up, only the end button had a little mark on it. the screen was great
i dropped my iTouch about 3 feet and it SHATTERED...but still worked for some odd reason lol
It took me a year with no screen protector to scratch it. Not even sure how. It's on the edge. Doesn't bother me except WHEN ITS RIGHT THERE IN MA FACE!
Also I had the first gen iphone way back when and that thing cracked after 6 months. Epic fail

Got my first scratch last week, got my 2nd, 3rd and 4th last night. Slid right out the holster and onto the mean DC streets. Picked it up dusted it off, kept it moving.
I shattered the screen after an accidental 10 ft flight across the bar on my bday when i was pulling it out of my pocket take a pic. Lost my grip. Bought and ActiveX after. Otherwise i like to keep it in the pocket with the keys and loose change for safety. No screen protector.

A big reason is that AT&T doesn't offer insurance on the iPhone (or didn't, I don't know about now). Makes one appreciate the TEP a bit more when you see one of those poor souls.

In case of battery dead or problem, what are our options?

I always used phones with replaceable batteries in the past and recently s3. But now I found new love in htc one ans pre ordered one. However, I am curious to what my options are when batteries go wrong or dead on htc phones. I notice a lot of you used htc phones in the past. Other than having insurance what did you do?

1. Get it replaced from HTC store.
2. Use a case like fuel charger for temporary period
Also like to know what's the battery replacement cost from HTC if I decided to use longer or for years, I know its too optimistic!
Doubt they could remove the battery. Perhaps they would replace the whole phone if it's still in warranty.
The phone is unibody so I don't know how they can take it apart without breaking the aluminum case.

The phone is unibody so I don't know how they can take it apart without breaking the aluminum case.

Obviously it comes apart if you have the right tools. If the body were designed so that you couldn't get the battery out then you also wouldn't be able to get it in either lol. Much like the one X you'll need to remove the screen and the rest will be accessible.

I always used phones with replaceable batteries in the past and recently s3. But now I found new love in htc one ans pre ordered one. However, I am curious to what my options are when batteries go wrong or dead on htc phones. I notice a lot of you used htc phones in the past. Other than having insurance what did you do?

Getting at the battery is easy ... I did it on my One-X ... It's right there behind that copper sheet on the middle slice ...

I think insurance replacement would be your best bet. I bought the Evo View 32gb tab when they had those deals going on about a year or so ago and the battery died on it and now its just collecting dust unfortunately..
For people who purchasing htc one from overseas, do you know if bestbuy will sell you insurance coverage for HTC one that is purchased overseas?

I've had good luck with the durability of recent batteries, but a lot of it is how you use them. These days you aren't supposed to run the batteries completely dead on a regular basis, but many people, my girlfriend included are under the impression that is what you're supposed to do. She has a 3 year old Toshiba laptop and it's battery is shot, my 3 year old Lenovo is still holding about half of it's original capacity. She also has an Ipod that needs a new battery. I'm sure her Iphone 4s will end in the same fate if I can't change her ways, but it almost never makes it through the day on a charge and she doesn't like to plug it in until she gets home or it's completely dead (if before that).
The 2 oem batteries with my Nexus One are still at least 85% as good as new, my ~ 2 year old Desire Z still holds charge like new. My best friends 2 year old Desire has the original battery working almost as good as new and my ex had the same thing with her Desire. My phones all get 1-2 days of battery life in normal usage for me, except the HTC One S I had would last 2-3 days at least. My theory is that while more difficult to replace the battery once it is shot, with better capacity and less cycles used it should last longer than the others, meaning most of the One S will never need a battery replacement in their normal lifetime for most people. Hopefully the One X, One X+ and One will be the same.
That's my thoughts. Hope I'm right.
I think you already swap a device in time of battery dead

I would think if something happened where it malfunctioned, your carrier would replace it, or worse case scenario you would have to pay the deductible price if you have insurance.
I would think your carrier or HTC would take care of you 1st before Insurance kicked in.
