If your upgrade eligible now but waiting till Oct. You need to read this. - Epic 4G General

This was taken from the Sprint Premier forums. http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/76419
"Hi xxxx
This is Clarissa with the Premier team.
Thanks for your patience. We received clarification that Premier Gold customers using their eligible annual upgrade before 10/2/11 will have one more annual upgrade available to be used by 12/31/12. If the annual upgrade is used on or after 10/2/11, that line would then be moved into the New for You program to be upgrade eligible every 20 months. In your situation, if you used your annual upgrade on 9/16/11; you would have one more annual upgrade available to be used by 12/31/12.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.
Thanks,
Clarissa"
So to sum this up, if you upgrade now you'll get another 12 month upgrade. If you wait till after Oct 2 your moved to the "New for you program" https://manage.sprintpcs.com/specialoffers/RebateWelcome.do which lets everyone upgrade every 20 months.
I for one was going to wait till mid Oct until I read the above quote.

Thanks for the heads up.
I, myself, became eligible for the yearly, but I wanted to wait for a (possible) google phone before the end of the year. Then, I could get another phone late next year.
With this, I may have to get the E4GT.
Also, the "new for you" is changing to 20 months.

The answer for this question is yes. Current Premier Gold customers who upgrade tomorrow (or prior to 10/2/11) would qualify again for an upgrade in 12 months (that they would be able to use before 12/31/12). After that, they are going to qualify every 20 months under the New for you Handset upgrade program.

I was waiting on the same phone. I ended up ordering the E4GT today. Here is a link that I used for Wirefly $139 it seems to be the cheapest atm.

I say get an upgrade for you guys, and sell it for half of retail if you can still live with the epic.

So is it worth it for me to upgrade to a epic touch just so I can get an upgrade? Or should I just wait it out for a better phone.
I'm leaning towards getting an epic touch.

I am focused on waiting for the Nexus Prime. This is makin my resolve waver.

$75 off the full price of the phone = 500-75 = $425
AFAIK, it also requires a new 2 year contract. Not worth it, IMO

I'd wait for Oct 1/2nd to do the upgrade.
Then you still have the 14 day swap, if the Prime comes out.

I'd be careful with this one guys...
I looked into this a little bit today - I had two separate conversations with two different Sprint Customer Service Reps regarding this...both of the reps had the same reply…..
“The Premier program is coming to a close at the end of 2011. Sprint Premier Gold customers - who aren't immediately eligible under the New for You Upgrade Program - will have until the end of 2012 to take advantage of their last qualifying annual upgrade. Once customers take advantage of their annual upgrade they will seamlessly transition to the New for You Upgrade Program under the new rules. (OR) If the customer does not utilize their upgrade eligibility before the end of December 2012 then they too will seamlessly be transitioned to the New for You Upgrade Program under the new rules (whichever scenario comes first)”
I am a Sprint Premier Gold customer & eligible for my annual upgrade. However, based on the above statements and the confusion surrounding this topic, (although itching to get my upgrade now) I will wait to see what new phones will be coming out over the next couple of months to make my final decision.

As a former Epic user, now utilizing the ET4G, I say...totally worth it.

If you look at my first post this came right from the Sprint Premier forums. If you wait till after Oct 2 then your going to lose out on a second 12 month upgrade. Do what you want though. I for one believe the Sprint mods posting in that forums compared to some random people in a call center.

In fact here is the proof. I'm a Sprint gold premier member. I just used my 12 month upgrade a few days ago to get the Epic touch.
When I go here to check when I'm eligible for my next upgrade https://manage.sprintpcs.com/specialoffers/RebateWelcome.do?ECID=vanity:upgrades
This is what it shows for me.

As you can see I'm eligible to upgrade again in 12 months.
So if your a gold premier member upgrade before Oct 2 or you"ll wait 20 months for the next upgrade.

This is assuming that I'd want to get another phone next year. I don't see a point to getting a phone right now because I'm happy with my Epic, and none of the other phones out there right now are not that big of a step. If I wait for several months, there will probably be a bigger-stepped phone, then I would have to wait 20 more months before I get another one.
I guess I could sell my upgrade if anyone wants to buy it, but I'm not really all that interested myself.

Shift vs epic 4g upgrade

My upgrade comes through on March 1st.. I've looked into each of these phones with great detail. This is what I've come up with in a nutshell. And I want everyone's professional opinion as ill be using this phone for a year or two.. thx guys and gals..(is there a girl on xda yet? ;p)
Stock pros of shift: pocket friendly, higher quality exterior, possibly more support on xda, I heart HTC.
Stock pros of epic 4g: better battery life, amoled screen, front facing camera, video card for twice the gaming potential
Both are 99.00 on Amazon with upgrade eligibility (so is the evo, but I don't need a tablet just yet, 4" is quite enough for me) .. I use sprint im not switching its cheap.. I'd rather have a steak then slightly improved cell service. I have wifi at home anyways..

I'm curious what replies you get, because my upgrade comes up soon.
My first thought would be to hold off until Sprint gets a sweet dual core.
I have an upgrade sitting around that I probably wont use until it goes away and then late this year I get it back with the new premier program (unless my hero takes a crap). I'd be more inclined to go with the shift, though some report it being a little "shift"y with regards to the slider seeming cheap. Any other complaints seem like things you'd adjust to (the volume/power locations). I've been keeping up with their forums a bit and it's still a bit young but seems to be off to a good start on that front. And people report it being fast as hell. If I go back to a slider, which I'm inclined to do, I'd go with the shift. The epic...well, I don't know a lot about it. I did play with one a little and it did seem fast and stable and well put together, but dev info here did get a bit confusing to me. I have quite a bit of practice at all of this, and I probably wouldn't have too many issues actually following the steps, that was just my impression.
I will be sticking with sprint myself as long as they remain cheap...hard to beat a 20% plan/25% equipment discount. I'm not just waiting to upgrade for some dream phone, my hero just works great. Honestly, I'd like to see a portrait slider for android, similar to the dell venue pro.
xda + android + HTC =
http://www.echobykyocera.com/
^Doesn't seem popular to a lot of people but I'm more interested in it than the epic or shift.
I know you might not like this, but I would wait a month after your upgrade is available. In march is CTIA, the event where the Evo was released. And from what I believe and others do too, is that the Evo 2 will be announced then. Most likely dual core, new sense, 2.3, and possibly superlcd from HTC. Honestly I would wait, not like your upgrade is going to expire.

But there is Sprint's new TOS for Silver vs Gold Premier service that takes affect April 1.
From what I'm reading throughout the internet is that existing Premier customers (like me) that don't qualify for Premier Gold won't be grandfathered in after after April 1. So, since my 12 month Premier happens before April 1, I have to pull the trigger on an upgrade before April 1 or I will loose it after April 1 and have to wait until the 22nd month of my contract. Even the Sprint customer service responses that I've read here and there are advising this too. So, I'm not sure what to make of it all.
Also, could this be why we have not seen a lot of new Android goodness on Sprint lately? Sprint could be waiting until after April 1 when the new Premier goes into affect before releasing a lot of new smart phones so that they don't get saturated with current Premier customers wanting to upgrade under the present 12 month rule.
Update: Here's a link to the Sprint TOS page about the upgrade impact. I definitely loose it after April 1. Read the question about, 'How is my upgrade eligibility impacted?' for all the details.
Except for the Nexus S, there is no reason to buy Samsung at all.
He seems to be correct about the new tos from sprint... I spoke to them on the phone about it they are getting rid of there og sprint premier program software one upgrade every year to the industry standard of once every two years. Ill call and ask again whether or not the upgrade rolls over but from the sound of it it doesn't. Grr. I have a soft spot for HTC as I've been using there fine phones since Samsung was even in the market. My first HTC was the P4350, winmo 5 I believe it was. Either way I need to figure out what to do within the next month here.
sent from my hero aosp2.2 cause aospcm7 2.3 was not as fast or stable for me.
Considering the 2.2 Epic update FINALLY just hit, and then was subsequently pulled within a day or two, should tell you something.
I was in the Sprint store the other day and everyone but one sales person had great things to say about the shift. Nobody liked the epic as much.
I have owned two samsungs, the moment and instinkt. Now I am a full blown hero addict. HTC is where it's at!
I've had my upgrade available since august but been waiting for something dual core love. Does anyone here think if I up grade now I will still be able to upgrade again in August. Before you were able to upgrade every year for the main phone on a family plan but after 2 years you were able to upgrade all the phones. My 2 year cycle is comes up in august.
And one more thing. With all the drama with Sprint's 4G network provided by Clearwire and Clearwire's big money problems, it may be that Sprint doesn't want to bring anymore phones via Clearwire's 4G service to the market since Sprint will probably have to switch to LTE.
So, there's another dilemma to add to the equation. I'll be getting a 4G capable phone and be charged an extra $10 for whatever, but 4G may not even exist during the entire 22 months of the new contract...drama, drama, drama...
So if we wait after 4/1 to upgrade would our upgrade default to half the full discount. Cause that's what I think I'm gonna do.

What should have he got? Sprint is falling behind in the new era of dual core phones. Yes I know that the Evo2 will probably be dual core but, I GUARANTEE it wont be out before 4/1/11. So my upgrade will be lost on April Fools day, and ill get the Evo2 12/28/11.

I just got the shift recently coming from a hero and would recommend this phone. My friend has a sammy epic and its a great phone but the quality is a little lacking. It just feels plasticky... I heard the epics actually run better for game emulation and such which has something to do with the achitechture.
The shift has been great tho. Its a good form factor and has a really nice keyboard. I've has a sidekick a mogal and a touch pro before going to the hero so I've has my fair share to keyboards to say that its a good keyboard. Very solid and sturdy. The phone is very snappy. I was running aosp 2.2 on the hero and thought it was pretty snappy but the shift blows it away even with sense. Still waiting for an aosp rom for this phone.
Enough with the rant... get the shift... haha

I was in the same boat, I was really interested in the kyocera phone, but saw that no matter what Sprint was going to charge $10/month for a premium phone, so I figured might as well go with a 4g phone in the off chance that my area gets included in the next year. I settled on the Evo Shift, for 2 reasons, one I don't really play intense 3D games on my phone, so I didn't need the extra graphics addition, and two I know the development for the Shift will be good as more people start to move away from the Hero and Evo they will more likely go to the Shift then the Epic being familiar with HTC.
Some pleasant surprises, the stock Shift has amazing battery life when compared to the Hero. I can't imagine the Epic with any better battery life, with a bigger screen and more graphics horse power eating away. Rooting the Shift was very easy, not Unrevoked easy but still 20 minutes easy. The shift is being over clocked to 1.5 Ghz and still very stable. Development is taking off especially since the end of January.
I stopped by a Sprint store a few weeks ago when they changed my premier status.
They said once you earn an upgrade they won't take it away. Call customer service to verify but I'm 99% certain come April 1 we will all still have our upgrades (mine just hit today) and will be able to look forward to something coming out in May/June that will have been WELL worth the wait.
Just upgrade your Hero to GB and ride it out. At least wait for CTIA...if nothing drops by then go get your EVO. You're going to hate yourself if you get an EVO Shift tomorrow and the EVO II gets announced in 3 weeks.

I'm sorry that you actually believed that. Read it for yourself. If I'm not paying for the $89.99 plan come April 1 because I'm on the $69.99 everything plan, then Sprint says I loose the 12 month premier refresh until the 22nd month of the existing contract. This is from Sprint's Premier Update questions web site;
Q:How is my upgrade eligibility impacted?
Effective 4/1/11:
Sprint Premier Gold accounts will continue to receive the annual upgrade benefit based on maintaining a 3-month average of $89.99* for individual plans or $169.99 for shared plans, or for 10+ years service. Gold accounts will receive one annual upgrade per qualifying plan.
Sprint Premier Silver accounts:
If the line qualifying for an annual upgrade is 22 months from the last upgrade, there is no impact. The line would continue to be eligible for an upgrade under Sprint's New For You upgrade program, which allows eligible customers to upgrade every 22 months.
If the line qualifying for an annual upgrade is 12-21 months from the last upgrade, the upgrade must be used by March, 31, 2011. Otherwise, effective April 1, 2011, the upgrade eligibility on that line will be changed to 22 months.
If the line qualifying for an annual upgrade is less than 12 months from the last upgrade, their upgrade eligibility will be changed to 22 months.
To check your upgrade eligibility go to www.sprint.com/upgrade.
*3-month average includes base rate plans only. Add-on services do not qualify. The average is figured per plan before any discounts are applied. Additional lines on shared plans or multiple plans on the same account do not count toward the minimum spending requirement.

Losing Sprint Premier: What would you do?

I still have my hero. My yearly upgrade was last October, so it's been a year and a half since my yearly upgrade was due.
My 2 year contract is up this coming October. I know I will lose my upgrade on 4/1 (I could have upgraded since last October).
Question for you guys:
Would you guys buy an Evo now and sell it so that you can get something for your yearly upgrade? That would extend my contract for 2 more years and I will still want a new phone in the near future...
OR: would you just wait and try to work out something with Sprint? Would they even budge?
Im thinking, around June (when these new phones are more than likely to be released), my yearly upgrade will only be 4 months away and I can pay $40.00 to get out of my contract early.
Do you guys think Spring would try and work with me?
What should I do?
Thanks.
Sprint is a little flexible, but I don't think they would be on this matter. Sprint is a service that will trap you up in its contract.
I'd get the EVO.

I hope Im not stuck because rumors are swirling about the Evo 3D being announced soon... : - \

I am in the same boat (probably a lot of Hero users who didn't jump ship to the Evo are as well). I would say stick it out. Even if Sprint doesn't let you upgrade until October, it will be worth the wait. Dual core processors are the future so you might as well wait it out. Heck you waited this long.
I'm waiting to see more about the Pre 3 or for Sprint to actually release a phone that can actually compete with what other carriers are dropping. End of March should bring some good news.
you wont lose your upgrade. just talked to a rep about my upgrade due in june an he said if your already eligible you wont lose your upgrade, told me to call back the last week in march and he would bump my upgrade up to april so i dont lose out on it.
I would advise people to go by the letters sprint sent out and their web site which let you know exactly the opposite what that Rep told you. You should believe him after April 1 when you have an upgrade discount in print, but until then he's an employee trying to move along to the next customer

Oh yeah...Simply everything for me...ninety nine, ninety nine ;-)
After my work discount I pay $70.00 including taxes. Your plan would be a waste for me since I hardly use any minutes with the any mobile any time deal.
Just spoke with sprint representative and “ as long as plan is included in sprint premier you will still get your upgrade in regardless what you pay with discounts” Any one else get different answer?
Everything will be up to you -
Im very dissapointed but my decision still keep Sprint even thought i'm not happy with it.
I've been a Sprint customer for almost 9yrs. will be 10yrs on August 2012
I have a shared plan $129.99 + 2 lines Im still Silver.
But... Im elegible for upgrade since 11-1-10
I havent upgrade cause im waiting for the right phone. might be Evo3d or Nexus S - I dont know if i dont upgrade before April 1st i'll still keep my upgrade. if not. I Assume ill be 22 months by September. if thats the case i have my Hero running CM7 and can wait until then.
Im considering all options... Hoping they will let me upgrade, but im not holding my breath.
BTW.. I just upgraded to Cyanogen7... Took some work on my part, upgrading everything.
However, this thing works great. Those guys have outdone themselves. Ill be donating for sure. Check it out guys!
yeah its gay that yearly upgrades are going 2 be gone but oh well
Yeah, well I did a chat and was told that there is no way they will let you upgrade after 4/1 unless your contract is up or your plan qualifies for the new "Premier" status.
Im looking at the Tmobile LG Optimus 2x. Looks good and Tmobile has good coverage where I live.
It also depends on what new handsets Sprint releases in the near future. It better be good.
We shall see...

Here's how it was explained to me; Existing Gold members who have an upgrade date before Oct. 2 can update b/t now and then and receive a second yearly update that expires 12/31/12. Silver members are basically SOL unless you are very close to your 10 year anniversary in which exceptions are being made as that was the case for me. No one can go from Silver to Gold after 10/2.
With the timing of the cutoff it really seems like this is a way of not letting people upgrade iphones every year.esp with the doubled etf. We might have been better off with no iphone

We are better off without the iPhone, now the Vision upgrade will become more like required mainainance than an improved network....

That's the big downside with iphones. To upgrade software you must also get new hardware. I only had 3 years to go to get gold. I was even gonna switch to the 99.99 plan to have gold but oh well. All good things must come to an end.

Here's some info copied directly from Sprint's weekly playbook
Premier Gold customers eligible for the annual upgrade between now and the end of 2012 can use their qualifying annual upgrade until 12/31/12:
*Once they take advantage of their Premier annual upgrade, they will qualify for subsequent upgrades under the New for You Upgrade program.
*If they do not take advantage of their Premier annual upgrade by 12/31/12, they will immediately qualify for an upgrade under the New for You Upgrade Program.

Also, the New for You Upgrade program gets you an upgrade every 20 months starting 10/2/11.

if you've only been with sprint for a year, this doesn't apply to you. Unless you pay for a plan that qualifies you for Gold Premier status.

Go to the Sprint website champ, it should tell you everything you need to know as soon as you sign in.

Sprint offering early upgrades to some customers

Itching for a new Sprint handset, but your upgrade date is still a ways off? You might be in luck, as a newly-leaked Sprint document has shown that the carrier is offering some customers an early upgrade. According to the doc sent to SprintFeed, there's a silent promotion running now through December 31st that'll allow some Premier customers to upgrade early to any CDMA handset in the Now Network's lineup, including the iPhone. The deal is said to be only available at corporate-owned stores, and before earning the upgrade you'll need to have your account reviewed by a sales representative for specific promo codes.
Sounds like a pretty good deal to me, especially considering that Sprint Premier is going the way of the dinosaur and most of the benefits of program are ending once the year is up. If you'd like to see if you're eligible for an early upgrade, mosey on down to your local (corporate!) Sprint store and ask your friendly rep to look into the promo. Just don't forget to come back and let us know how it went when you're done, k?

I don't know why anyone would re-up their contract at this point. Wait until the LTE phones start coming out, and then re-up.

Exactly, no point in buying a phone now, then being stuck in a contract when LTE comes out

Unless they want to get you into a new phone now, then you'll have to pay more for the new phone that comes out next year that you should have waited for, but can't pass up. Sprint knows how your mind works.
Stop posting this people it is false rumor many people have tried today and no luck. Unless your due for an upgrade in the next two weeks

Not totally true. I went to the Sprint Store today. I have 3 lines on my plan. Two of them are due to upgrade in March. The 3rd line is due in October 2012. They offered me an upgrade on the Oct. phone because it is the primary line. Don't know if I will cash in, but the offer seems legit. I have been a customer for over 10 years. Maybe that is a reason.

Not true! I'm on a family plan with 4 other phones and I was able to upgrade my dad's phone today even though his upgrade isnt coming until next august. They gave us the early upgrade because we are premier members and he is the primary line. The sprint rep told me they just heard about the deal yesterday, and it does indeed go until the 31st.
I can confirm this is real. But the stores i called and went to are all asking for you to either upgrade your plan or buy accessories to do it.
Anyone else running into this?
It's pretty standard to renew your plan whenever you do an upgrade

No not renew but upgrade. curently have $129 and they wanted me to upgrade the plan to $149 plan.
Well got some crazy news!!!! i took advantage of the early upgrade and found a store that did not make me upgrade my plan or buy accessories. I think its a store by store discretion type deal with making customers buy accessories and upgrade plans. Also they bought 2 of my evo's for $100 each and all rebates were instant for the phones i got. Sooo i spent A little under $300 and got a 16g iphone 4s for my girl and got the epic touch for me. All and all a great deal and i'm very happy with my new phone
But i'm a little sad to be leaving the evo 4g section of XDA. Gonna take a break from rooting and enjoy stock for a min then be back flashing and learning the epic touch!! Good bye all my evo compadres

Those of you that had early upgrades...

How'd you do it? My cousin just upgraded to the S4 and now I'm desiring one. However I don't have an upgrade until July 1st. I called Sprint customer service and they said it's impossible to have my account pushed for an early upgrade. Is she full of it or am I SOL until July?
Please do tell me your stories.
Im not quite sure how you qualify for early upgrade possibly when your Sprint premier customer but ive always been eligible for a early upgrade

Well customer service implied I'd be capable when it becomes June. They mentioned it's more likely the closer it is.

My last upgrade I was a couple months early before my upgrade and I was able to get an early upgrade in store but I had to pay a fee of like 50-100 dollars extra.

Currently Sprint is offering an early upgrade program called upgrade now you just call and ask to upgrade now. Depending on your current eligibility it may cost anywhere from 50-100 dollars.

Actually if you are due in July 1st. You should be able to upgrade your phone now at the store. Sprint actually makes you eligible 2 months before your upgrade (If your 2 year contract ends in July). You could go here and check. I bet you will be happy to see that you are eligible. Otherwise it is $50 dollars and they make you turn in your current phone, which is NOT a deal.

I received a early upgrade and my due date wasn't until 1 July 2013. Cost is 100 bucks + S4 and your all set.

This is exactly what I found out today. They quoted me $100 to push my upgrade from July 1st to now. I'd rather wait a month and get it to save $100. If Sprints Variant wasn't the most expensive of them all, it'd make my choice easier. Not to mention activation fees that's a total hit or miss on having it waived.
Depending on how long you've been with them...you could always go the spoiled brat way and say you'll cancel if they don't let you upgrade early. As long as you've been a good ontime paying customer, they will do it 9 times out of 10. That's what I did, and I wasn't eligible until November 2013. (I have had 4 devices with sprint for 6 years though).
Goto wirefly, they have the Sprint S4 for 219. You will save a few bucks to help with the 100 dollar charge.

Been with Sprint since 1999. Very disappointed when they took away my annual upgrades. But u feel like people play that "loyal customer" card far too often for it to work for me. I doubt calling retention will work because I have 4 lines and the rest are upwards towards 12+ months remaining on the contract so they'd make more money on an etf from me.
