Today at Build Microsoft announced that Windows 8 would launch with ARM support. Does this mean someone could potentially port it for the Iconia to be used in those times when a Window based software is needed but neither PC nor VLC is unavailable?

Anyway, only time will tell if win8 will be ported to the iconia (or any other android tablet). I haven't heard of wp7 being ported to an android phone, so I wouldn't bet on it. Still I can see the potential in it and would gladly try it (especially if it can be made as dual-boot).

Downloaded and installed the "Developers Preview" of Win 8 last night. Remember this is a pre-beta release, and for certain it's in it's infancy relatively speaking. As of this moment in time, Android has a much smoother interface for touch. Win 8 still feels a bit sticky for lack of a better word. I installed it on my HP Touchsmart TM2 2150 US laptop (core i3 with 8Gb ram), so it's not exactly a slouch in terms of hardware. It's a total touch screen laptop that has a screen that folds down onto the keyboard to create a tablet. As of this moment, Win 7 has a much better touch screen experience, but I fully expect that to change as the builds mature.
There are very few apps that come with it (28 I believe), and no app store as of yet obviously.
I read last night that typical Windows apps will not run on the ARM version of Win 8, and that MS is going to do it's best to prevent side loading of apps on the ARM version to keep people purchasing apps, instead of loading them from a USB stick or SD card, but that is just rumor as of right now.
Long story short, you're not missing much yet.

I don't think Microsoft will be releasing a beta for ARM chips and we will see Windows 8 run on ARM only during retail. After that XDA will not port Windows 8 simply because it would be considered illegal.

I installed Windows 8 on my pc a few hours ago. It is very smooth! But my DVD burner doesn't work... Anyway, I would love to see it on the A500.

There's no "might" about it. Microsoft confirmed ages ago that there WILL be an ARM version of Windows 8, and recently clarified that it will NOT run native x86 applications. It's conjectured that that .NET applications should run with either minimal changes, or straight off the bat.
It's also been demoed running on Tegra 3 hardware.

Pure .NET applications should run just fine as long as they're using the same .NET framework as W8 does, but Microsoft is encouraging devs to use HTML5 for anything simple enough. They're aiming for HTML5 support to be top-notch and W8 and to be all-encompassing.
And yes, I concur with FloatingFatMan: why do people even think an ARM W8 would be able to run x86 binaries? That's just plain stupid. ARM applications will run on ARM W8, x86 applications will run on x86 W8, that's that.

There was some rumour that Ms would my providing some transcoding layers as part of the ARM kernel, much like Apple did with the first x86 versions of OSX, but that would be horrendously slow and open the ARM platform to x86 malware.
Pure .NET apps SHOULD run fine, unless MS ship the compact framework instead of the full one. As for HTML5... URGH! (I'm a C# programmer, and after being shafted by MS over first WPF and now Silverlight, they can blow HTML5 out their asses! )

I know there was such a rumour, but anyone with half a braincell should've realized that it was just wishful thinking from people who don't know what they're talking about.
ARM devices are first and foremost mobile devices so an emulation layer would eat horribly on the battery. Not to mention that I am not aware of a single ARM processor sporting any kind of hardware virtualization features or transcoding mechanisms, so the performance would be really poor, too.
And if Microsoft did make such an emulation layer it would be Microsoft that would get all the blame for horribly low battery-life and poor performance because people wouldn't understand the underlying problem. Microsoft saves themselves a lot bad PR just by avoiding the whole thing altogether.

When they release the ARM version, hopefully someone here will figure out a way to get it onto our tabs. Since the ARM version will run on everything from cellphones to tablets, I'm pretty sure the A500 will have the hardware to run it. Since the only version of Win8 out is the X86 / X64 developers release version, we will have to wait for the ARM version to see for certain.
I can't imagine that the A500 will not have the capabilities to run win8, whether or not someone will port it over to our tabs is another story altogether.
Well then I cant wait for the ARM version. I have been running the x64 version on my laptop and I havta say its really nice. I really would like to dual boot it on my A500 with android. it just feels like it would be perfect for it.

If it does, it will big blow on the Android, because many of people will move to the W8.
I guess Android 4 is will come quicker than W8 for Iconia devices.

The "Developers Release" of Win 8 sux as far as the touch screen experience goes compared to Win 7 as of this time. Not sure if you're using it on touchscteen or not. Win 8 is far from release, but if we only believe half the hype, it should not only bring all the platforms together (which is Microsoft's intent), but should be pretty amazing (again, once it's finished).

With ubuntu we pretty much just mount the .img and connect to it with vnc right? couldnt we do the same with the dev. preveiw of windows 8?

I doubt it, android uses a totaly diffrent bootloader structure and partition layout to windows based phones, it also uses a diffrent file system, i wouldnt like to brick my nand chip by trying to format it in fat/ntfs

From my perspective,android is still linux but a simplified mobile version..i guess that is why it was possible to port ubuntu to work on it.
As regards windows 8 ,i really think it is impossible due to the hardware specs nd libraries.

Tegra3 android is one platform already used for windows8 beta arm , which was seen on ces. so its possible, but sure all drivers needs to be made or compiled for arm cpu.
and it is said that bootloader will contain encrypted keys to boot windows somehow, i do not know the complete story here, probably a BIOS edition like on regular pc's.
hopeless, not at all. just look at iMac when it started on x86, we had their OS on non-mac's and their hardware was dualbooting win7/MacOS.
it will be just a matter of time, until someone do that, if you can run windows 95/98 and XP on HTC EVO 3D why not Windows 8?

i doubt thats possible without drivers and an arm compiled windows.
you have probably seen a remotedesktop like SplashTop for android shown.

As far as i know all this OS are running on virtual machine, so... it's laggy, it works only with standart drivers, so there is no any hardware acceleration. I think some people will keep trying to port Win8, but as other says, it can be very hard, mb cotulla can, he know Win7 embedded core, so it can be like Win8 core. And another one peace - as i know Win8 for tablets and PCs will be same, but WP8 will have another core part.

dont know wtf you guys are talking about... usually no, windows will only run on an x86 machine (but with software anythings possible if you have the know how)... but however, windows 8 is supposed to run on the arm chipset. meaning that there is a high possibility you will be running windows 8 on your prime

WoA (aka W8ARM) will require a secure boot module attached to the motherboard. It will also not be able to be purchased by consumers, only OEMs, so porting it to a non WoA device is in a legal gray area (licence keys and all). Also you'll have to deal with writing your own drivers for a lot of stuff.
If you feel comfortable dealing with sottering, extensive coding, and legal problems you MIGHT be able to get a version of Windows 8 that can only run metro apps onto your tablet. Now tell me, is that really worth the effort?
Asus will eventually release a Transformer on Win8, so who cares?

Windows 8 is closed-source, unlike linux, and Microsoft won't expose the source code to public so we can just hack, port, tweak, and do whatsoever on Windows 8. On linux, we can do that freely
Even assuming that the drivers would just magically work, how would you even load it. There's no BIOS you can just boot to and have it install a new OS, you can't use a live USB or CD or DVD. I doubt we can flash it with our current boot loaders and I doubt we could flash a new one to support it. Correct me if I'm wrong here because I would love to have it on my Galaxy Tab 10.1

My question is will there be a way to dual boot Windows 8 and ICS (or whatever Android we have during Win 8 tablet releases)? I've seen all the dual boot tablets introduced at Computex and INSTANTLY fell in love with the idea of having both the OS'es at my fingertips, but at the same time I know the official solutions will be unnecessarily expensive.
I was wondering if it's theoretically possible to buy a dedicated Windows 8 tablet, not the RT version, and eventually mod it to run Android. This will make my fall purchase of a tablet so much easier.

If a tablet comes with Windows 8 ARM Preinstalled, you basically can't dual boot ICS on it. Why? Because Windows 8 for ARM requires the tablet manufacturer to enable secure boot on those devices. Thus, enabling secure boot won't let you dual boot Win8 and Android on it. Microsoft is very clever, they do really start to block linux and lock the tablets to Windows 8 ARM only.

Yea I know you can't do it with the ARM tablets, that's the windows rt version. I was asking towards the other regular Windows 8 tablets. Can you dual boot ICS on those?

Ohh... If a tablet comes with an Intel or AMD processor inside and not ARM, then this will be possible. You can dualboot Win8 and ICS on it

Cool, is this already being done? Can you link if possible? I tried searching but couldn't find anything. This just made my tablet shopping a lot easier for the fall.
Android is Open Source and Windows 8 is commercial so.............

Yes, you can run Android on x86, but many of the native apps won't work as they're made for arm processors. Take a look here: http://www.android-x86.org/
intel is putting its medfield CPUs, which are x86 atom-based SoCs, into android smartphones right now. Expect to see the same chips in W8 tablets. with that said, it should be fairly likely to see a dualbooting tablet.
also, i'd like to point you towards the Asus Tranformer AiO, shown off at Computex.

It would be interesting to run the metro ui on the smartphone itself but it will get better if you just hook up your phone to a monitor/laptop dock and enjoy a windows desktop experience (like the motorola atrix and this).
I have always been a fan of the OQO UMPC and this would be the modern version of that.

I have dual boot on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (which has a x86 Intel processor) with Windows 8 Release Preview and Android ICS.
First I installed Win8 using a boot stick which you can create using this tool and the cd image you downloaded. Then I shrinked the size of the Windows partition to free up some space for Android.
Then I used the latest Atom image from Android x86 to install Android from another boot stick using this tool.
When installing Android don't forget to install GRUB boot loader.
Once you done that you can choose which OS to boot every time you start the device. Unfortunately it doesn't work using touch. You have to have a USB keyboard attached to choose the entry that is not default (in this case Windows 8).

I think running Win8 on a Phone with a x86 cpu like the medfield atoms from intel is possible, but you can't run metro apps on the phone's screen itself because the phone only has a resolution of 1024x600. Metro apps requires 1024x768 in order to run and in order to use "snap", a resolution of 1366x768 is required. So I think you need to hook up a mouse and a keyboard on the phone in order to enjoy the new metro feature of Windows 8 on a phone hooked up to your HDTV

Uhh no. Galaxy Tab 10.1s use the ARM nVidia Tegra 2 SOC and are pre loaded with android honeycomb unless you have a unique version that no one else in the world does and no one has heard about.

Hey there's no Galaxy Tab with a x86 processor (Intel or AMD). If there's a samsung tab with a x86 cpu on it, then it's not on the galaxy series.
