[Telus T959D Fascinate] - Successfully running DarkyROM 10.3, CWR, Voodoo and More!! - Fascinate General

Hi guys,
I just wanted to share my experience and thoughts with everyone here in regards to successfully installing the DarkyROM 10.3 on my Telus Galaxy S Fascinate (T959D).
I have always had troubles finding information on Custom ROMS, Kernels and hacks that would work with my Fascinate SGH-T959D. So I ended up taking a leap of faith and figured I would try one of the I9000 ROMs out there.
** By no means is this a guide **
Installation Process:
IMPORTANT: Before upgrading to Darky 10.2 EE, make sure you either restore to factory setting OR uninstall any third party applications you may have installed from the market before you upgrade to Darky 10.2.
I started out by the following process to install DarkyROM 10.2 Resurrection GT-I9000 from the following source:
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/odin-darkyrom-10-2-resurrection-gt-i9000.4272/
I used ODIN3 and flashed everything necessary for the upgrade and lucky everything went well. I then downloaded and installed the DarkyROM app from the Android Market. (New Android Market by the way )
Everything appeared to running perfectly so I made the decision to download the DarkyROM XXJVR10.3 which includes the DarkCore3.1 kernel, then moved it to the root of my SD Internal card.
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/i...wm-sgs-cappy-darkyrom-xxjvr-10-3-beta-1.4508/
The DarkCore3.1 (I9000+I897) kernel includes:
JVR Modem for I9000
DEODEXED
root
busybox
OpenVPN
BASH
RAM Hack
% Battery
Overscroll
Extended power menu
CRT-Off
BLN full support!!!
SIP over 3G and WiFi
I installed DarkyROM 10.3 via the DarkyROM app without any problems. I took the same steps above installing the DarkyROM 10.3 to install the Goldielicious Red RC9.1:
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/i...darkyrom-goldielicious-red-rc9-1-update.4564/
I must say that I don't think I will ever go back to a Stock ROM now that I have tasted Darky's Custom ROMs.
Battery:
With the Darky 10.3 ROM and the Goldielicious Red RC9.1 theme applied, the batter life is amazing compared to when I was on Stock gingerbread 2.3.3. BONUS!!
Launchers:
This ROM comes with the new Launcher and also TWLauncher 4.5. I am using neither of them though. I am still using Launcher Pro Plus which i prefer and works with out any issues if you uninstall and re-install the app.
Networks:
I have read about a lot of people having problems with either there Wireless, 3G and or GPS not functioning properly after flashing a custom rom.. Everything is working flawlessly for me! The wireless is great, 3G is there as always and the GPS connects within 10 - 15 seconds!
Bonus!:
Clock Work Recovery CWR 3.0.2.8x is included as well as Voodoo control (both Lag fixes enabled )
Now the ONLY thing that isn't working properly is what I had expected anyways from installing a I9000 ROM on the T959D. The Home and Search button no longer work but I never used them anyways ways so i don't even notice it! I think there is a Hack or a work around but I figure I not bother trying anything else since everything is running better then perfect!
Oh and another thing that I really like now is that I can actually change the boot up animation and sound too!!
If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask!
Here are screenshots of my Telus Fascinate with the DarkyROM 10.3 and the Goldielicious Red RC9.1 theme:

Hey guys, currently, i got froyo with a supercurio's custom kernel, and have a custom rom running.
Should i go back to stock before i update my telus fascinate to 2.3?
Is that what you did to update to 2.3?
Thanks in advance.

It might be best to go back to stock first just to be sure. I ended up flashing to Darkyrom 10.2 first from Stock gingerbread 2.3.3 + rooted. Then upgraded to Darkyrom 10.3.
So im not 100% sure how clean the installation would be if your already coming from a custom rom. Best to safe and flash back to stock. My 2 cents

Great! I got all my Buttons working correctly now thanks to jpmccarthy!!
Here is how it is done:
You will need a file manager application, like ROOT Explorer or something similar.
Open up /system/usr/keylayout/melfas_touchkey.kl in a text editor.
Make sure that your 'keys' look like this:
key 139 MENU
key 158 BACK
key 217 SEARCH
key 105 HOME
key 106 SEARCH
...
..
...
Save the file and reboot your phone. All your buttons should work now

No prob, and props to Japots for providing me that how to ... also ES file Manager has a root explorer option you can turn on and is a free app in the market.

I'm willing to try this, but can anyone confirm that it's a safe process?

To fix home button you can use this patch. Just install from recovery.

I'm about to get a T959D, thanks for your guide there!
So when I get the phone, I should flash it back to stock 2.2, upgrade to 2.33 with Kies, root it, then flash to Darky 10.2 then to 10.3?

So far I have successfully installed DarkyROM 10.2 EE on two other Fascinates (T959D) without any issues at all. Both phones were originally upgraded to Gingerbread from 2.2 and gingerbread was also rooted.
So I would suggest upgrading to stock gingerbread first, root it, then preform the DarkyROM 10.2 EE upgrade as mentioned in the first post.
One important thing I didn't mention which i should is that make sure you either restore to factory setting OR uninstall any third party applications you may have installed from the market before you upgrade to Darky 10.2.
I didn't do this and ended up with a number of applications force quitting but all I had to do was uninstall them, then reinstalled after the upgrade.

Got it, thanks for the tips!
I've been reading a bit but I'm still a bit confused... what is the issue behind putting custom roms on the t959d? Seems like CM doesn't work on the t959d either?
That said, as long as the phone runs fast with the voodoo mod, that's all I'll care about, hah.

I'm not 100% sure why and I have never tried installing any other custom ROM besides Darky 10.2.
I found that the battery life was a bit better then Stock 2.3.3 and it ran smoother as well.
Been successful with 3 Fascinates (T959D) now.

Nice! I'm coming from the Samsung Gio. Nobody ever mentions about link2sd or app2sd on these forums... is it because there's enough space to install whatever you like on the T959D? Do you keep a ext 2/3/4 partition on your sd card anyway for apps?

I wonder if restoring your applications from Titianium would achieve the same result - keeping your data and settings without needing to reinstall applications. This is on my to do list, so I will try that as I have a multitude of applications installed and this seems to be the go to way of doing it for most people.
Also be good to do a nandroid backup of your phone first

The complexity is in the phone itself - the Telus Fascinate has nothing in common with the Verizon one - its actually closer to the i9000 or the vibrant - but still not exactly the same. Because it is odd that way, and only offered by Telus, not a lot of handsets out there I think - so not much development BUT we get some GREAT support where folks have made some custom kernels or others try the i9000 ROMS and report back (like here ) In most cases, looks like the buttons are the only issues which is very fixable.
I definitely want to try Darky's but cannot be without a phone, so waiting for a USB Jig (Ordered but not delivered ) first before jumping in.
iwbsource's success (multiple times now!) is definitely a good indicator that will work out though.
Great job!

DarkyROM Tool?
A lot of the how tos say to get this tool for Darkys - but I cannot find it in the Market from my phone (but I CAN from my PC).
Does this only show up once you have Darkys installed so that you can configure it?
That kinda makes sense to me but thought I would ask.
EDIT: That's exactly what happens - you need Darkys installed to get the app.

I can vouch this post.
I got DarkysRom 10.3 on my T959D and it works flawlessly.
Just follow the steps and everything will be fine. I had no problems with this.

Couple questions about Cynogen and settings.

Hi, I am currently running Cynogen 4.0.4 on my rooted Mytouch 3g. I used the one-click method to root it. I also downloaded the 4.1.11.1 to my computer just incase. Do you guys think I should go to the 4.1? Is is the same? How do I upgrade and will I lose all of my apps if I upgrade?
I was also considering to just go back to stock because Cynogen got stopped. Will Cynogen ever be making new Roms? If not should I be going back to stock because I just want to have the newest features and updates but still have a fast phone.
Just one more question now about settings, I have the Hero keyboard but I activated the touch vibration when I type and now I want to disable it. Everytime I disable it I start typing and it comes back. How can I fix this? Thank you.
You can't upgrade to Cyan 4.1 at the moment as he has taken his downloads offline because of the legal dispute with Google.
I would recommend RogersRom 1.5 (see my signature) if you want a fast rom with Cyan's kernel, compcache, betterbrower etc. personally I would not go back to stock as the mods made by the devs here at xda are worth keeping.
Not sure about your keyboard vibrating ... have you enabled haptic feedback in Spare Parts? You might need to turn it off in there as well as in the touch input settings.
Haptic feedback is DISABLED so I don't know what the problem is. I will just uninstall and reinsatll the hero keyboard. And just to be sure Cynogen is done completely with roms? If so are there any other good roms besides Rogers that are not hero. And how do you install a new rom on top of the Cynogen one I have? Thanks for you help.
to change roms just wipe and flash over it. as for Cyanogen I don't think he's stopping anytime soon. check out his website..cyanogenmod.com
read his updates,
he's still in full force.
There are several ways to get the cyanogen roms =P... Just do some search =P...

Install cyanogen updater from the market and it still upload the new roms if you want cyanogen 4.1.11.1 you will have to change in the setting to display experimental roms he has a new one out but it not in cyanogen update i just did this and all my apps wallpaper and contacts are still there

Hi i am new here and to new to android . I want to flash my xperia x10 form the stock software to 2.2 or higher. I have read most of the guides and am still unsure which rom and baseband to use. I am running Ubuntu 10.
thanks
I would suggest Wolfbreak's CM 6.1.3, it's fast and stable, and looks nice =)
It is also easy to install since it needs baseband .54, which you can get it from the .435 stock firmware directly.

i would have to agree that Wolfbreak's CM 6.1.3 would be the rom of choice. It is super stable and quite fast too.
You will need to root your phone, and then install xRecovery. Then you can install ROMS from the xRecovery menu.
Root using superoneclick and then copy the xRecovery APK to your phone and install it. Download the ROM files and copy them to your SD card, reboot into xRecovery and follow the ROM installation steps (backup all your stuff on your phone first - i suggest My Backup Root (from the market) - provided you have rooted it already). If you want to try different basebands, i have included a link for them too.
As for doing all this from ubuntu - i think you will need to be running a Windows VM or find another pc that has Windows installed, i tried from Ubuntu myself but it was just easier from a Winblows machine.

I'm also kind of a noob, but I really want to make this stuff work...
I took this thread as a base, I currently have the 2.1 official update on my X10. So far I used the superclick tool and it said it rooted my phone (how can I make sure it worked?)
Then I downloaded the stuff and run the xRecovery app, it said it granted some superuser thing, but then I see nothing else...
Any help appreciated, specially if I skipped some steps maybe?
if you want to check if you are rooted, intall titanium backup and see if the app runs. If it does, then you've got root.
I didnt get what you wanted to ask in the second part of your question though..
I was missing an app from the market
Ok I got it working
So far I'm testing this new stuff...woah, amazing.
Any recommendations of things (ROMs) I should try?
p.s. I got no signal and WiFi won't turn on... I guess this is normal?
@ aR_ChRiS and mrtim123
Second that Wolfbreak's CM 6.1.3 is one of the most complete 2.2 roms. But you'll want to look up post on how to:
- root your phone
- install xRecovery (requires busybox), and how to use it
In case if you "brick" your phone or get stuck in a boot loop, look up for "flashtool".
Hope this helps.

WIFI, camera and everything else works great for me. Except for the camcoder, it's got a bit of audio sync problem if not using the right setting.

How do you get it to the right setting? and someone told me it drains your battery. is this true?
Yes battery life isn't that great but acceptable for me.
~24 hours under medium usage
~12-15 hours under heavy use
You need to have your focus setting set to infinity to have better audio sync.
To be honest I don't think the camcorder is up to average user's standard, but camera works just fine.
Things I like from this rom are:
- improved performance (very few lags, things run much smoother than stock 2.1 especially when texting)
- android 2.2 apps & features (gmail 2.3, flash, JIT...)
- no random reboots
- the unlock slider does not lag after the screen is off for awhile
Known issues to my knowledge:
- incomplete camcorder
- no live wallpaper
In case you haven't noticed tho, devs here have figured out a way to bypass x10's bootloader. This will enable us to load custom kernels.
All the roms here before the breakthrough are only built on top of the stock 2.1 kernel. That's causing some limitations in developing custom roms (issues such as having a working driver for x10 camera)
So if u can wait for a bit I'm sure there will be better roms (with android 2.3) coming in the next couple months! And Sony has announced there will be official 2.3 upgrade coming possibly during this summer.
However I've been using wolfbreak's CM 6.1.3 for over a month now, would really recommend it if ur not that into video recording lol

After all thr struggle I went through....I fiinally got my sgs running smooth.

Hey Guys!
After all thr struggle I went through....I fiinally got my sgs running smooth. Well this goes for all 2.2, 2.2.1 and 2.3.3 stock Roms.
1. All i did was use voodoo lagfix.
2. Install superuser from market.
3. Install root uninstaller
4. Uninstall all samsung apps eg. buddy, feed updates, dual clock, diary etc...task manager. All of them except samsung apps (u may choose to if u dont use it).
5. Now reset ur handset and enjoy ur super fast sgs.
I dont think sgs need any task manager or killer. If needed u may kill tasks from running apps in the settings. I dont think there are any issues with touchwiz or sgs as such.....but these apps are really crap. download apps from market. They all work awesome.
My sgs is currently on the 2.3.3 JVK Rom.
You could of saved a lot of effort and just cooked a Rom in the kitchen.
I've come from darkys rom to a custom cooked one from the kitchen and my phone is faster and more stable than ever.

De-odexing if anything will slow the phone down, but zipaligning can lower some memory consumption, so technically your phone may give better performance because of zipaligning (due to more mem being free).
/probably not noticeable though...
I've flashed honeycomb and, stock, this rom is faster than darky's
How I did it:
I'm using GT-I9000M so I need the 850, so prior to this, I've flashed theses modems, in order: JL2, JS8, JPD
Hard reset when still in Darkys
Disabled lagfix and all the optimisations
flashed JVK
Hard Reset again
And everything is darn smooth and stable, battery holds 3 days easy. Honestly, best rom as of now!

Just put phone in download mode and with Odin installed voodoo hacks gingerbread kernel with reboot unchecked.
Removed battery and into recovery to install tw4 zip.
From recovery chose reboot in download and with odin re added stock jvk kernel with reboot checked. That's all.

Does this work if you've installed some skins, like the Crysis Sensation? I saw that someone said there could be some crashes etc if using TW4. Anyone noticed any problems?
As stated in title, stock jvk from samfirmware and no themes. Led fix and crt off animation the only add ons.
Totally smooth. 2 homescreens only and no fc's.
Not sure either but I used the first zip in the link and it might be deodexed. Still it is very nice.

but is it worth flashing ?
Was for me.

hurray! but is it like the ACTUAL sgs2?
I update TW4 to the last version present in its thread, it's simply amazing, fast , smooth and beautiful, the best you expected from the new galaxy s II, the amazing thing is that work BETTER than TW3 on our galaxy S!
I suggest to try it, without doubt
It work fine on JVB, i use a deodex rom stock (made with kitchen ;-) ) with CF root 3.1 kernel
It work fine also with modd like 5lockscreen (but read the topic before try)
You can also continue to use crt off, glow scroll and other fix already installed.
before flash i suggest to put in SD card a "sos package" to use in case of bootloop so you can flash back to your configuration.
Also suggest to install alternative launcher you prefer, and DON'T check "use always" so if you got problem with TW4 homescreen, you can push back key, choose other launcher and maybe try some fix direct with root explorer (for example)
i hope you find my post useful!
;-)

Seems like it to me. Just like the tw4 clips on YouTube. Multitouch works perfectly and all widgets and screens act the same too.
To add more apps to dock you have to tap on apps icon. Then menu then edit. Then add the desired app icons like phone, messages, etc by holding on app and dragging it next to app icon as the rubbish bin is now in the usual area to add icons in tw3.
When installed tw4 it only has app icon in dock.
Took a while to work out. Ha.
Awesome launcher.
Was originally using gb launcher.

Thanks... i wann try
I use tw4 about 2 days now. It was in the Juwe's 4.2 rom i flashed...It is very nice, extremely smooth and seems to work nicely.
However it still has some bugs, you may experience fc's and even sudden reboots (did so once at me after it f.c.). Also as someone posted at another forum it seems to prefer RFS file system to ext4 (unknown why since SGS2 runs on ext4). I cant say so myself since i am on RFS too but any feedback on that would be welcomed.
PS: just a tip, if you want to install TW4 i recommend installing a rom with it, it seems to work better when roms are build around TW4 and not the other way around

Maybe not. I've installed on top of stock jvk not jvb and have had 0 fc's at all. 2 days running and no problems. Only thing that caused me grief was adding icons to dock but sorted that out...
You have installed a rom with it included and seem to have issues?
After reading 30 odd pages in the link I came to the conclusion that custom roms with tw4 included sometimes had issues so I added to my rom which is running rfs.
I reckon if you wanna try it and you're running stock jvk, go for it.
No need to do a complete rom.

Latest/ best current Ginger Mod for A953?

Hi,
I've successfully modded my MS2 yesterday using (walter's?) "ms2ginger-rc2". It's been quite easy - I expected it to be much more difficult.
Unfortunately it's impossible to add accounts (app crashs). Therefore I plan to roll back to the sysbackup Imade before with Clockworkmod and to re-mod it with a newer/ better/ more stable variant.
Can you suggest one that you are happy with? I am fine with Blur - it can be included.
Anything to keep in mind for the rollback? Just revert to the backup via the bootloader?
CU,
Meszi.

i have tried CM7 and was before using it on BackFlip, but on Milestone 2 i am really loving MIUI its great ROM.
The problem is as i saw no one who is maintaining these CM7 or MIUI rom is not Dev, so i kinda think Milestone 2 can perform better with some optimalisation for it. The reason is as far as Stock Froyo was slow, CM7 and MIUI did not show kinda speed progress or increase i guess it is performing same as stock ROM or maybe little but only little better, on BackFlip there was really dramatic speed change on CM7 but the dev around BF was more active then on Milestone and i am happy with what we have already.
As far as I know, the MIUI is the latest one. But that's just because endles7's ( the guy who is porting CM7 to M2) phone is bricked at the moment.
Both, CM7 and MIUI are great ROMs, but, at least for now, if you're looking for the newest one, then MIUI is the one for.
I believe that CM7 will be supported again soon, there is a movement on the forum to buy endles7 a new one if his is really bricked forever.
I'm using MIUI because o like the interface better.
Hope it helped =)
Upgraded to "ms2ginger 1.1" but still problems with accounts management
Hi,
I reverted to Froyo, reloaded the backup I had done with Clockworkmod, made an app backup using Titanium and re-modded the device to "ms2ginger 1.1". But still there is the same issue with accounts ("Konten" in German): When trying to add an account the app crashes.
I am fine with the rest ... it works far faster than with Froyo.
Is there a way to get accounts/"Konten" work again? Probably by finding it in the Titanium backup and taking the old app or by (re)installing some working .apk?
At the moment I am still very new to this topic ... until last week I still believed in the myth having bought an "unmoddable" device.
I'd try CM7, too ... but if it's possible to have it done with "ms2ginger" I'd at first prefer trying it that way.
Any suggestions?
CU,
Mészi.
after trying cm7, i really prefer MIUI Rom on A953 !
but Cyanogen team will soon release a 2.3.7 Rom ... so we'll see !
Switching from MS2Ginger to CM7 Nightly
Sorry, if it appears to be a dumb question. But at the moment I am still very new to this topic and want to avoid bricking the device by forgetting a thing when switching from "MS2Ginger 1.1" to some CM7 ROM...
When reading the installation steps of the nightly build (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239778)...
*START copy&paste*
[How to Install]:
1. Download all in one update.zip
2. Make sure you have CWM3.x/4.x working. Or download from here.
3. select all in one.zip then apply update.
4. double wipe(if you are coming from previous CM7 version,just wipe cache/dalvik)
5. For CWM4.x, reboot and done.
For CWM3.x, download fixed-sbf and flash it. Then done.
*END copy&paste*
...it's not plain to me if I needed to switch back to the official Froyo or if "updating" with the all in one.zip and wiping the data would be sufficient to get rid of the previous "MS2Ginger". :-/
Any recommendations?
CU,
Mészi.
Do you try with "RSD Lite" software to put the stock Rom ?
and then you do the update to the custom rom ... no brick with this method i think ! but i'm not expert sorry !

That's the question.
If it's not necessary I'd directly load the CM7 ROM using CWM.
But, anyway: As long as I can access the boot loader (PowerOn + Cam + VolDown) I could still revert to the official Froyo if updating to CM7 directly would not work.
I think I just give it a try...
CU,
Mészi.
exactly ... i was afraid last friday while updating my stock rom for MIUI ... my battery goes out !
all day i was thinking that my lovely Milestone was bricked ... but with "rsd lite" i re-install my original froyo ... and then i could re-root it and put the miui version !
last version is perfect ! just the problem of keyboard layout but there is a script who put it back to azerty ...
have a good luck for your update !
++
So you would recommend downgrading to the official Froyo at first? *somewhat confused* :-/

... i don't really know ... just said that for me that was the only way to rescue my bootlooping m2 !
normaly you can update from any rom, just don't forget to clear cache, "dalvik cache" too (don't remeber the name) ...
the best is to do a factory reset before rebooting too ... but it's not always necessary ... from miui 1.09.23 to miui 1.10.8 i don't have to do it ...
they don't talk about it in the related post of your rom ?
Ok, thx. I am gonna just try it wiping the cache and overwriting the ROM. ROM switching is not relly described in the MS2Ginger HowTos. *g*
Will post my results here...

Worked w/o any problems
Hi there,
I just "updated" my MS2 from "ms2ginger 1.1" to "EndlessCM7_20111001_Nightly_BPSW_v1_0" without any problems.
I can only recommend to check the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239778
Thanks for your replies so far.

happy to see that it worked !
Problems with CM/ Nightly
Hi there,
I am half-way about to throw it away again.
I installed EndlessCM7_20111001_Nightly_BPSW_v1_0.zip and then EndlessCM7_update_from_111001_to_111004_v1_5.zip and it appeared to work fine.
But I had to recognize an instable Market app, WiFi cannot connect to my access point and the camera app crashes reliably after starting it.
I will post this in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239778 too hoping that these are known issues with known solutions on it.
If anyone of you knows I'd be glad if you threw some suggestions at me.
CU,
Mészi.
O well....
For me, MIUI is workind perfectlly, without any problems.
And, my battery life increased alot with the latest build of it
So i would recommend it.

Update: I reverted to the stock ROM and installed the most recent version of EndlessCM7. Now it's working fine.
Details here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18352563&postcount=1382
Thanks for all suggestions. Hopefully this thread will be useful though too for other noobs avoiding the mistakes I did.

Hi, Michael:
I'd like to have my MS2's battery improved like you said and enjoy Exchange server support as well . Do you know if MIUI rom supports it?
MIUI has Exchange server support and works fine.
