Is the Iconia FM Radio capable ??? - Acer Iconia A500

Hi there would love to listen to FM radio on my Iconia, does the Iconia have the necessary hardware/chip to be able use some of the hacks that have been done to enable FM on some Android devices ??

nope
You would have to use a external tuner.there is no audio in port on Iconia that I know of so don't know if its possible at all.but lots of FM radio stations broadcast off there websites. I think thisnis your best option

Thanks for your reply Erica, yep I know there are apps for streaming, but I wanted to do a custom install in my Nissan Navara truck and use purely FM and RDS to save money on streaming data...
Any ideas anyone?

You can't as Erica said. The tablet just doesn't have the FM tuner that you would need.
EDIT: You asked for an idea so here's one. Buy a radio. You won't be able to play radios on this tablet without streaming the music to.

well officially it doesn't have FM radio support, but like the phones I'm pasting below these dont either but have the hardware to do it but are not enabled in stock and have been made to work, what I'm asking does the iconia have the capability like these phones?

Spirit FM Radio is most likely to run well on CM7 ROMs with the CM FM app, but is also reported to work well on some MIUI and other ROMs.
Experimental Galaxy S support for Darky ROM, and CM7 and related ROMs has been pulled.
These devices have been confirmed to work well:
TI chips: - HTC Legend - HTC Tattoo / Click - Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini (Stock ROM rooted. Not mini pro, yet) - Motorola Droid X (some report problems, but others seem OK)
Broadcom chips: - HTC Desire / Bravo (GSM only) - HTC Desire Z / Vision / T-Mobile G2 / Merge / Sprint EVO Shift 4G - HTC Desire HD / Ace / AT&T Inspire 4G - HTC EVO 4G / Supersonic - HTC EVO 3D - HTC Google Nexus One - HTC Touch HD2 / Leo - HTC Aria / Liberty - HTC Wildfire / Buzz - LG Optimus One / P500 - LG Swift / GT540 - Dell Streak (Only from speaker so far, not headphones)
These devices have not been confirmed, but supported the CM FM app (as of May 1st) and are likely to work:
Broadcom chips: - HTC Glacier / T-Mobile myTouch 4G - HTC Incredible / DROID Incredible - HTC ThunderBolt / Mecha (Scorpion) - Geeksphone Zero - Motorola Zeppelin
These devices will be better supported as I continue to add support for Silicon Labs FM chips:
- Samsung Galaxy S/S2. - ZTE Blade / Racer.
These devices contain Broadcom chips, but appear to be unable to receive FM. They show unusual RSSI values, that jump rapidly between such values as: -128, 0, 16, and 55. None of these devices have a stock FM app, nor will any other FM app function. My theory is that these devices lack the hardware connections to operate, and may even be deliberately disabled:
- HTC Google Nexus S (Has no Silicon Labs FM chip, unlike Samsung Galaxy S.) - Samsung Galaxy Tab - Samsung Galaxy Spica i5700 - Motorola Atrix 4G
These devices do not seem to function well for unknown reasons. Hopefully they will be enabled in future:
- HTC Desire CDMA / BravoC - Samsung s5570 mini (GT-S5570) - Sony Ericsson x10 mini pro
These devices seem to function well but audio has not yet been enabled. An analog audio routing method may be discovered, or digital audio (when supported) may help resolve this issue:
- Samsung Galaxy 5 / GT-i5500 and other Galaxy 5 series devices with MAX8899 audio chip - LG Optimus 2X / Star / Speed / P990 - Wits A81E\G (WG7310) (FM Antenna must be soldered)

CM7 runs gingerbread so we can stop the discussion right there.
Even if you would have such a chip (which would require tearing the device and checking it or getting your hands on a Tech manual) you'd still need the software which we don't.
So until we get some developers that made the app for CM here and someone to port the app to Gingerbread we won't be able to do anything even if we had the correct chip.

Tuni in radio from market.

FM transmiter/reciver

It been reported thru several teardowns that the n1 has a fm transmiter/reciver inside. Is there anyway to to access this hardware (where would it be located /sys/device/ ect) would be nice to know if we can interface with this hardware.
nexusoneblog.com/blog/2010/1/6/nexus-one-dissected-reveals-80211n-wifi-and-fm-transmitter.htm
It would be awesome to actually have that funtionality. I've seen a few crappy flip phones with FM transmitters built in.
a google employee on this forum (swetland) said there is an fm transmitter/reciever, but google is not developing or working on an app for that yet, that's why they did not advertise it.
My nexus one is rooted and I have a console program just trying to figure out if this hardware would be listed in the /sys/devices/ area anywhere. Im new to android not sure of how the google api's work but would be intrested into trying to get a small app or script to run just to initalize the hardware and fool around with it. any ideas?
i know cliq users have a FM radio built in too, but they don't have an app to use it. see this here http://www.modmymoto.com/forums/showthread.php?t=526775

there should not be anything on the phone that you can find that mentions the existence of an fm reciever/transmitter... the phone has one but there is no functionality of it because there is no driver or app support for it... from what i have gathered getting the thing to work is going to be quit a project because the community would have to create a driver for the device as well as an application that calls on that driver as well as utilizes the capabilities of the chip itself... i dont know what experience you have with creating a driver to work for a complex piece of hardware that you have no idea how it works, its more/less going to be like blindly threading a needle unless google/htc would be so kind as to give one of our lovely coders some groundwork...

potentially... if this thing gets coded to work, receiving signals will prolly be the easier thing to figure out first...
other HTC devices, such as the HTC Touch Pro2, have a built in FM receiver. HTC actually writes an app for this and I use it on my TP2, but I don't know if one exists for the N1. You can search xda-developers for the win-mo version for the TP2, but my point is, if they did it for winmo, they can do it for android!

lol clearly you did not read get my point... "they" are not making anything, else they would have marketed it from the get go... it is up to the android community more specifically the nexus one community to come up with a driver that makes the chip functional... the chip in the other devices may be different as well, aka different driver needed...
What about htc tattoo? It has a fm receiver and an app...
The nexus one uses the broadcom BCM4329 Chipset. I need to find something to work with for this chip to even understand the funconatly of the chip itself I will look thru broadcoms site later see if they have any kind of driver or any information at all on this chipset. Reading other posts on other phones that had a similar chipset people were able to get the reciver on the chip activated but were unable to get the sound routed to the phone. They were able to however to get the the radio to tune to certain frequanceys and I think get the RDS information from the chipset. If anyone finds any relevant information post it here

This tree was just added to the android source on the 12th of Jan looks to be mostley for the WLAN/Bluetooth features of the chipset

Looks like an fm radio app for android using a qualcomm chip.
Im talking with the devolper of the driver for the wifi portion of the chip. At this time he is as well intrested in getting the Radio part of the chipset working but does not know much about it himself. Hopefully something will arise out of this conversation with him and maybe we will get a nice start to getting this portion of the chip working!

Clearly, you didn't get my point. For the TP2, not only was the Radio app not marketed, it was also not made available by HTC, but is now available on this forum. Secondly, I didn't contest that Google is not going to develop a Radio app - I simply said that HTC HAS made one. Hopefully, that clears things up
I have been talking with the guy from broadcom tongiht i will quote some of what was said here. Im not sure if he wants to be know to the comunity or not.
He had included the link to a video I have seen on this fourm will link below.
"I'll let you know when I figure something out. What other HTC phone uses the 4329 chip with Android? I wasn't aware of one. The HTC HD2 WM6.5 phone uses 4329, but I don't know if FM is enabled on that either.
There is an Android FM radio app for the BCM4325 chip, I saw a YouTube video of it running on a BeagleBoard: ww.youtube.com/watch?v=v6wdTOHrwQw This is using an AzureWave module, which has the 4325 in it.
The FM RX portion on the 4329 should be the same or nearly the same. I believe the FM is conrolled by special commands in the BT HCI interface, so some Android framework/JNI work might have to be done to the BT stack."
Thanks to Mr H ^^
I will do more work on this tommorow and see how far I can get
Thanks for everyones intrest and help!
An FM APP to unlock the FM Radio functions of my Nexus is something that I am willing to pay for!!!!
Some of the senior developers here are aces so I will keep my fingers crossed.
I just want to express my interest in a FM radio for Nexus One.
I think people (including me) will be happy to pay for an app that enables the FM reciever on the phone.
Good luck to whoever is trying to get this to work!
As I am not a developer all I can do to help is surf the web to see what I can find.
I found this link tp://www.9to5mac.com/broadcom-BCM4329-iphone-802.11n-FM
That states the iPhone has the BCM4329 chip in it. Now I have not found an apple app nor do I know if this helps any of the aces out there.
So just take a look.

Bluetooth 3.0 is a lie

Go to the bluetooth menu under ##DEBUG# with 2.2.1 and you'll see it says BCM4329 which is a 2.1+EDR chip. Right under that it will flat out say "BT_SPEC_VERSION_2_1".
Edit: Sorry for posting in the dev forum, I forgot I was still on there.
No. Epic 4G has bluetooth 2.1 and other galaxy s's have bluetooth 3.0. Simple is that and samsung did not lure about that.

Hmm, what chip do the other phones use?
Also, what's this supposed to mean? https://www.bluetooth.org/tpg/QLI_viewQDL.cfm?qid=16676
However, I noticed that the BCM4329 family does claim to have both FM receiver and transmitter capabilities... but then I guess that doesn't mean this particular chip, by the way it was worded - I hope it's not just wishful thinking

A lot of phones have FM chips disabled. The Nexus One has this same chip actually and a lot of people tried getting FM transmitting to work but I haven't seen anything yet.
I emailed someone at Phonescoop and they say the phone has Bluetooth 3.0 and linked me to the same certification site I posted previously.
Isn't Bluetooth 3.0 effectively do authentication via bluetooth and send file over wifi? not to mention not too many devices support it :/
Bluetooth 4.0 introduces most of the goodies.. like low power mode..

FM for fascinate???

Samsung Fascinate have Fm Radio, but I don't find app its. Can I set app for my Cell. thanks
Huh? Could you reword that question? Its hard to understand what you mean.
Although I think this is a General Forum Question, I think he is trying to say.... "The Fascinate has an FM radio, but I can not find the App.... Where can I find said app to use the FM radio..."
Answer: Doesn't exist..
there is an FM radio in it?
Don't you think thats something they would advertise?
Highly doubtful
If there is a FM capable chip on board, we currently don't have any apps for it.
I don't believe that we have a FM chip in this phone.
I found on gsmarena the specs of this phone and realize that the phone has "FM radio with RDS". ^^. lol.
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_fascinate-3492.php
Could this be a feature that froyo will enable? I seem to remember this happening to a friend of mine when his incredible was updated to 2.2; he got the radio & the flashlight.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
it would be a nice little addition, however I think I would still prefer pandora or one of the many other internet radio apps.
The FM radio was listed on the first pre-release spec listings, but was removed from later listings. The prevailing theory is that the Fascinate was originally going to have an FM radio, but it was scrapped (like how we were supposed to have Media Hub like the other Galaxy S phones but are stuck with VCast). I wouldn't count on the hardware being there. The Incredible's FM tuner was functional with 2.1 (I can vouch for that firsthand).
FM radio stations are lobbying to make FM radio receivers mandatory in phones in the US (in exchange for paying higher fees).
Because of that, several phone manufacturers and chip makers have had the hardware put in their devices as a just in case measure. For instance you may find a Broadcom chip that controls the wifi and phone radio to have an fm receiver as well. In any case, these specifications sometimes fluctuate.
However, without actual drivers to run said unsupported tech, the issue is moot.
Swyped w/ XDA App. When in doubt, mumble.

Fm Radio in Note 3

No matter nowadays internet radio is being popular....no matter some people dont like built in (analogue) fm radio...
But many people STILL love their beloved in-built FM Radio very much...But????
Can anyone confirm that either of Note 3 varriant has Fm radio or not???
We all know nowadays samsung has started to drop built in FM radio like Galaxy S4 ...but after many people showed dissapointment ..samsung had to give clarification on it...but as far as Note 3 concerned some sites say there is fm radio while some say no
Even some sites say however both chip support fm radio, that Exynos varriant has FM Radio and SD varriant has no fm radio or vice versa
I am confused on this feature....weather it is present in note 3 or not
The question is not about usability or likeness of FM radio.....cuz many people Still missing FM radio in s4...everybody like/want more & more essential features in their devices
Also would like to know this (some sites have changed the FM radio status to TBC - to be confirmed).
Yes, this should NOT turn into yet another discussion on FM radio vs Internet radio please. Every other premium (Android and Lumia) phones has an FM Radio, so Samsung should just add / enable it...
The official press release doesn't list it, so I'd say that's a solid no:

Apparently Samsung in Russia said this about the lack of an FM radio in the S4: "The flagship model of our products are focused on customers who use digital content"
Although I understand the difference between digital and analogue sound, I don't really care; I just sometimes want to listen to the radio without the cost/occasional unreliability/battery hogging of listening to a streamed data signal. I doubt I'm alone in this.
It looks like the multipurpose chipsets used today have FM capability, but are just not "wired up" for some reason. I doubt if money is an issue - most especially with a phone as expensive as a Note 3.
The S4 doesn't have an FM radio and Samsung have sold 10s of millions of them so this is hardly going to kill the company.
Sorry - I've just realised I haven't answered your question; I've no idea !

Previously GSMArena has confirmed the FM Radio on the Note 3 specification page, but just recently they changed the FM radio status to "TBC".
If Note3 still has no FM radio then I'll definitely be ditching Samsung for good (I supported them since Galaxy S1/S2/Note2) and go for LG G2 Korean version (no FM either for Korean version but I needed to pull away from Samsung).
I think Samsung is feeling cocky now and starting to pull away from their supporters. Eg1, ditching FM radio telling customers you don't need it, Eg2. Pulling a fiasco with this Exynos 3G/Qualcomm 4G configuration. They are just like Apple telling you what you want to buy.
I doubt very much they will have FM radio. I remember when 4g s3 came out many sites stated fm radio even the carriers also stated this.. but when i bought it there was no fm radio in 4g note 2 and s3.. also no FM radio IN s4 4g

I also noticed that now GSMArena state a definitive "No" in the FM Radio section for Note3. My solution is simple, change to other brands
Reason why Samsung totally killed my heart:
1. Ditching 4G LTE support on their Exynos chip
2. Stopped improving the AMOLED with RGB like they did with Note1 and Note2.
3. Ditching FM radio completely on their flagship line up.

You need to look up soc processors. ..... system on chip .... the reason the lte versions won't have fm radio is there is not enough room on the die to put lte radio and fm radio. ... that is the reason the exynos version has a fm radio because of lack of lte radio in chip .... you can't have everything. ... they took out what will be used the least ... and left wifi bluetooth etc things truly useful. ..

I don't think die size is the limitation because :
a) Korean version of S4 (SHV-E300) has 1.) Exynos Octa chipset, 2) Korean LTE support, 3) Korean TV Tuner
If die size is a concern then I'd imagine Samsung would have ditched the hardware Korean TV Tuner chipset as well and tell every Samsheep fans that they don't really need a hardware TV tuner because nobody would watch old fashion over-the-air TV broadcast anymore
If Samsung could have stuffed TV tuner in a Exynos Octa LTE phone, is it too hard for them to stuff it with a FM Tuner instead?
b) International version (Qualcomm Snapdragon 800) of LG G2 has both LTE support AND FM radio.
Rather than pushing the envelope and continue to innovate, Samsung is sitting back and relax and tell people that their current offerings is all you'll ever need. Being a hardcore Samsung Galaxy S series follower, I'm seriously sensing they are slipping away from their followers and becoming the next Apple. Good Luck Samsung, I'll be glad if I turned out to be wrong.

several app i used
Just force stop

I heard slimkat rom for Xperia SP have this feature
But I cant test it
I think it's possible to port it from slimkat rom SP to Z ULTRA
Sorry for my bad English
Spirit Transmit on Play should work on rooted Xperia T and most Z and Z1 class Sony devices with Qualcomm FM chips, like Z Ultra.
Spirit Transmit is based on Spirit2 now. The latest 20150317 release fixes problems with device detection: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fm.a2d.st
The older v1 of Spirit Transmit, based on the Qualcomm app, is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059296&page=845#post55456171
Also the latest 0317 beta releases of Spirit2 and Spirit2 Free have a working transmit mode, although with fewer features than Spirit Transmit.
Spirit2 Free 0317 is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3215671&d=1426618705
For transmit mode, set Menu>Set>Tuner>Mode to Transmit and restart Spirit. Not required with Spirit Transmit, which defaults to transmit mode, but can receive (for testing) too.
Copying my post from here for posterity: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z-ultra/help/z-ultra-fm-transmitter-app-t3057193
Transmit capability in Sony Qualcomm FM/combo chip devices may be an "accident".
To transmit, the so called "Internal Antenna" pin of the chip must be connected to wired headset as the antenna. Most other Qualcomm chipped devices use the "External Antenna" pin which can only receive.
I'm not sure why Sony used the "Internal Antenna" pin. Hypothetically, the electrical characteristics, like impedance, of that ping may have suited the designers better.
But I lean towards the idea that designers wanted to be able to provide an FM transmit ability, while management did not want the extra costs associated with app creation and testing for this.
T-Mobile did this with a phone once; I have a leaked transmitter app and it works on 2 of my now very old phones. They changed their minds.
If nothing else, you can get a phone to market faster without additional testing, and the smartphone market has been fiercely competitive to get their devices out first.
