CM7 on the Touchpad - WebOS Software Development

quote from here http://rootzwiki.com/content.php?r=234-EXCLUSIVE-CyanogenMod-7-On-the-HP-TouchPad
Hey Internet/RootzWiki--
Here is some (older) touchpad progress from Friday. The Cyanogenmod team wanted to share it with the public as a blatant publicity stunt to bring attention to our need for a few more touchpads (for developers currently working without them).
As you can see from this quick demo, we've been working hard and have made progress. Since this video was created last week, the build has been more "tabletized" (tablet tweaks added, etc.), lvm support has been added, and 2d hardware acceleration should appear very soon.
The touchscreen driver issue is now the focus of our attention.
Our ultimate vision is to create a *multiboot* solution where the end user will be able to boot into WebOS, Cyanogenmod, and/or other OSes. This appears to be very possible, and we have discussed several potential implementations with our new friends in the WebOS development community to make it easy for an end-user to set up.
For the moment though, we need about 4 tablets, as we have talented and experienced developers who cannot contribute effectively due to a lack of hardware. If you have an extra touchpad and are willing to help the cause, please let us know in the comments below.
A BIG CAVEAT-- PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR ETAS. For the uninitiated, this is the #1 rule for Cyanogenmod. It will certainly be a long while before our goals become reality. Our goals incidentally are not connected with any bounty-- we are motivated to do it right, not do it fast.
And now the obligatory shout outs-- Thanks to rootzwiki and all the devs and everyone else who are collaborating and contributing to this project. You know who you are, you.
The CM team

PS- Yes, this is gingerbread (Android 2.3.5). Everything you see, except for bootie the bootloader (a great kid's show btw), was compiled from source.

I know just how it works, you meet a guy named Boris and his brother Ivan under a bridge in the bad part of town. They show up in a van and he says "you give pad, wait here,we fix up good, okie dokie!” Bori s and Ivan get in back of the van,Boris jumps in he drivers seat, burns rubber and your touch pad ends up on ebay. If your smart enough to decide not to give them your touchpad,Boris grabs it while Ivan bashes you in the head with a tire iron, and you wake up in the emergency room missing your wallet after a homeless man realized the trash bag he was taking a leak on was moaning and leaking blood.

Show your CyanogenMod and Teamwin pride

I was mowing the yard yesterday and thinking about all the great things both groups have done for the EVO and Android in general. It got me wondering how we could show our pride. Back in my college days the truly proud nerds wore shirt that were sort of inside jokes for our majors. Things like schrodinger equation, Laplace transform, etc that had differing variables that when solved said something about the EE Class of xx' in my case
We could start with something easier to develop and distribute like a wallpaper and choose the top designs for things like T-shirts, coffee mugs, 3D paper figures, etc.
Anyway, I was wondering if anything like this has been proposed and how much interest there would be in this from the community. Thoughts and ideas welcome.
EDIT:
This is open to any and all who love CyanogenMod and Teamwin independent of platform, OS version, etc. Even if you do not use any of their stuff, but you love what they represent and do for Android.
EDIT 2:
My vision is for this to be open to all and non-profit. If we create physical items they would be obtained at cost. We have other avenues to donate to them and I encourage that people do so. Lets keep this clean!
EDIT 3:
Please refrain from saying anything negative about either team. This thread is about positive feedback and support for those for whom we are greatful. Any negative statements and fanboy behavior will be reported.
EDIT 4:
Please refrain from making suggestions that are crass. They will be ignored or reported.
EDIT 5:
Please do not limit yourself to T-shirt design ideas. This can be wallpaper (regular or live), boot animation, bumper sticker, pennant, etc. I have Lego models of the hardware I help design, launch, install, and sustain. We could do the logo in Lego, or a painting/poster....and so on

I think this could be a cool idea. I think quite a few of the wallpapers could be used on shirts, I got some interesting ideas in my head.
I think that's a great idea. I would think others would too. In my opinion, at least some of the profits should go to the development teams.
Oh yeah, thanks HTC for working children for like 50 cents a day & then charging us $500+. Even if my phone was a pile of crap with a touch screen attached, Cyanogenmod & TeamWin could make it better than my Evo was out of the box. Pretty sure of that.

i like simple, so maybe a cyan colored shirt, with simple text stating "cyanogenmod" or "teamwin" even though with team win its hard not to make a sheen reference. if anyone wants to start collaborations on a project im willing to help just pm me.
I think Cyan shirts with simply #teamwin or #cmsrc would be pretty cool. Maybe post this over at the actual cyanogenmod forum (maybe you did, I haven't been there in a while, xda runs so fast it's hard enough keeping up here).

Samsung sent Atinm a SGS II so he can dev Cyanogenmod 7 on it.

Follow this link:
http://www.androidcentral.com/cyanogenmod-coming-galaxy-sii-thanks-samsung
This is a great move on Samsung's part. Can't wait to own a Galaxy S II, or the one after, if my Vibrant continues doing an admirable job.
Jesus christ, they gave him a phone to develop CM7 on?
HAY SAMSUNG, WE CAN HAS GB SAUCE FOR COMPLETELY FUNCTIONAL, NON BATTERY DRAINING CM7 BY ATINM?
Hmmmmm... Can they not get GB to work right on it either? They should just put him on the payroll.
That's freakin' sweet. Guess they do care about fans...in a way.
Now leak Gb so us Vibrant users can have a fully functional CM7.
It'll be funny if they wont release the source for their drivers to Atinm LOL
but on a serious note, what does this mean for the Vibrant's CM7 development?

Don't get so tore up. If you re-read what I said you will see it was a joke. Perhaps I didn't use proper punctuation. I apologize you got so upset you had to search your vast vocabulary for a word such as "pedantic" to throw at me. It is a nice gesture by Samsung. Thank you for bringing us the good news. I hope you find this post a little less pedantic for your exquisite taste. Good day sir...

hopefully samsung won't control the development otherwise devices might not receive updates anymore
So is this good or bad for us? I dont think i would be able to live with out any more updates for my phone running cyanogenmod.
Could a thread title possibly be more misleading??? I'm kinda scratching my head at some of these replies after reading the article. Nobody bought CM! The CM dev was hired on at Samsung!
Well, considering Cyanogen is the developer's nickname and CyanogenMod is the ROM he's developed, what's wrong with the title?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
If this is true, and Steve continues to work on his "side project" after Samsung forbids him to do so, he could find himself facing an onerous lawsuit from his employer.
It is known as a form of "poison pill". A company hires someone who can or does make a dent into their profits. After a while, they "discover" his work and forbid him to work on it ever again. He continues to work on it and the employer sues, claiming millions in lost revenue. At best, he is out hundreds of thousands before he settles out of court.
From someone who has seen this scenario played out more than once...
Edited title of this thread due to confusion.
Cyanogen = Developer of CyanogenMod
CyanogenMOD = ROM that was developed by Cyanogen
Samsung hires Cyanogen. The CM ROM won't be affected, since it is a side project of his. He is currently employed, and developing his ROM isn't his full time job (although developing constantly, you could make a case for it being a full time job!). CM the ROM won't be affected by this. Updates will continue as always, and Samsung has nothing to do with the CM ROM.
The CM Team was given a Samsung phone a while back and told to "get CM7 running on it", which was pretty cool on Samsung's part. I am sure they are interested in the ROM, since it is great, and updates are frequent to address issues that arise. BUT Samsung does not own the CM ROM, they've merely hired the ROM's creator, Cyanogen.
I think this is a huge leap forward for both samsung and the CM7 community.
Sent from my 2.3.5 Incredible Obsession
the way i see it, win win
Samsung got another dev to work on their android lineup
Cyanogen got a new job because he has a rom for...countless devices (most of which have been EOL'd by now, namely the OG droid and Droid Incredible) on his resume.
this will not effect cm7, at all, he will continue to operate it as a side-project, samsung did this because they want to keep up with Sense and MotorBlur. (touchwiz has room for major improovements too)

That's kinda like saying I bought General Motors because I bought a Chevy Cobalt. "Hires" makes more sense because you hire men and buy slaves. Sorry... It's not just you. I think the title in the article is ridiculous too. You just passed it along, really. THEY should know better, but this is the problem with amateur journalism that lacks any sort of valid editorial process.
I doubt this will mean any kind of merge though, for those wondering. I see lots of confidentiality agreements in this man's future, and possibly having to divorce himself from the CM project to some degree to avoid questions of intellectual property ownership. Just my thought....

Another alternative would be a web-top, or web only desktop. But markets have not responded to web-only environments. The desktop is a high-productivity mode, not a media consumption mode or a browsing mode. That’s why we’ve brought the full power of a native desktop to this solution.

Source: http://www.extremetech.com/computing/119031-canonical-reveals-ubuntu-for-android/2
The other problem is that while Canonical is pushing the build to hardware manufacturers and mobile carriers, it has no plans to release it to the general public for independent development. This means that you won’t see a CyanogenMod ROM with this functionality built into it. While Ubuntu is open source, Canonical plans to control the release of this version. It’s possible that, given the ingenuity of Android users, one day there will be a leaked build, but such a thing wouldn’t be endorsed by the company.

They only have to publish the portions of code which are not proprietary, which we have the majority of, assuming they modded stock Ubuntu.
At least, I think.
I contacted canonical about the availability of the source code. Also asked them if they had any plans for targeting android devs/hobbyist.This is what the atrix has been waiting for. I'm really interested on this, awesome find OP. If they ship source code a cm webtop is within months.

Ha! I was thinking the same thing in regards to cm webtop. I also put in a request for source as I'm seriously debating picking up an Atrix JUST for this. This looks like a great platform to develop for.
I was reading around and found an article saying it is open source, but there was no link to the source, nor can I find it.
If I do, I'll post back as well. Hopefully it's out there, if not, crossing fingers they release it.
Has anyone seen the VIDEO yet??
Theyes DID use an Atrix2 as a test mule. And as you can see, it works PERFECTLY. Although they didn't launch any desktop apps (Chromium, GiMP, Libre Office are the ones I'm really on edge for) you can see the deep integration-- to the point where I'm almost sure that they worked in secret and sold a bastardized version of Ubuntu 9 to Motorola. I'd always thought that it was an internal project of Moto's to make webtop… Since Google bought the cow, Canonical seems to be letting the cat outta the back and trying to sell it to the phone industry at large now. However I'd also say two things…
Make an open source version that us gear-heads can sink our teeth into. If they want to create a "fan base" that can get behind their effort, they'd owe it to themselves to jump over here onto XDAdevs and let folks like SamCripp, the Atrix Dev Team, and the CM devs help out. Get folks like me who are crazy enough to use their LAPDOCK as their DAILY WORK COMPUTER (using it RIGHT NOW and I have no webtop even since I'm using CM7 at the moment. I've used nothing but Linux at home for years, so someone like me can shake down their efforts and give them a real-world test.
