what im expecting is a bit more technical, such as what actually are being covered by stock rom while not touched by custom roms, where those files in "dev', "etc", "sbin", "sys" come from (since seemingly they are not included in oxygen rom when i check the zip file content), etc..
if these files are from the stock rom im using before flashing a custom rom (oxygen + B136 in my case), then im not just experiencing oxygen, rather a mixed experience of oxygen & B136..
if this is the case, the problems/issues i encountered might not be solely related to oxygen and might actually related to the stock rom..
anyway im very new on linux and smartphone stuff.. any information to enlighten would be much appreciated..
It won't be a mix of two ROMs at the same time, if you install your custom ROM with that instruction:
In Recovery menu: Choose Wipe Data /Factory Reset, then go back to main menu. Choose Wipe Cache Partition, then go back to main menu. Go to Advanced and choose Wipe Dalvik Cache, then go back to main menu. Then install the ROM by using the zip-file you placed on the sd-card earlier. That will delete what's left of the previous ROM. If you don't do this, you will run into problems eventually. But if you just wipe everything before flashing the old ROM cannot interfere.
Do not extract the zip-file of a custom ROM, just install it as it is.

Well Android does some stuff at the first boot and it does install some files (I do not know what it does exactly). If you followed the instructions these files cannot be from another ROM.
What other questions do you have? You just wrote "etc.", I cannot know what you want to ask...

I don't think that all the data gets replaced even when wiping both caches and doing a factory reset before applying new ROM. I just did that yesterday with new MIUI release, but I can still find data from my very first stock-ROM! In cust_backup/image/cust_data is folder called elisa(finish network provider, from which I originally bought the phone) with all the bloatware(gameloft installerinstallers for example), finish swype and more (folders are: app, lib, logo, prop, wallpaper, xml). Yesterday, I deleted it (the whole "elisa" folder with Root explorer (since I thought that: I have this new ROM, I don't need this old remnant crap of froyo). Well, as it turned out, I DO NEED this old crap, since after reboot phone just froze after operator logo( I honestly don't know how the logo was even possible, since it was in the folder I deleted). Had to restore from recovery and now it is back again..
Q: if I update to latest official rom, will the data in cust_backup be updated? Is this the point of applying latest stock-release once in a while?

I have the same folders, but for Estonia Elisa. I don't understand why is it there, when I have a totally different ROM.

The partition mounted to cust_backup won't be overwritten by the wiping that is usually done before installing a new ROM. This is because it contains the files needed for entering recovery-mode etc.
This Elisa-folder contains stuff that is needed, maybe even the bootlogo (I just thought about this for a few minutes now, so I don't know what it is for). This has nothing to do with the ROM previously installed or with the Huawei-ROM. This folder is necessary for every u8800-device to work properly regardless of which Android-ROM is installed. Mine is called 2020 instead (that might depend on where you got it from).

The point of applying the newest release is that you can make sure to get the latest baseband-firmware and maybe even updates for other parts. I do not know if these updates are installed via cust_backup but that could just be the case. It isn't important though; at least I get great reception everywhere so I do not need to update the baseband.

The baseband updates the program that controls the radio-chip. This firmware has its own area on the radio-chip, this firmware won't be stored on the device. But a file to update this firmware will be on the device (maybe it is deleted automatically after updating).
now i think im much clearer.. thx..
then probably i dont need to update to B138 as i have good signal reception everywhere, and can sleep well since i know my phone is not with sub-perfect firmware.. 8)
for the cust-backup discussion, i also had similar doubt before..
glad that i didnt really go ahead to remove this useless "/cust_backup/image/cust_data/pccw/hk/" folder tree..
i just wonder how it manage to survive between rom wipes and installs..
this pccw folder came from the provider where i bought my phone, and in B136 rom its "/cust_backup/image/cust_data/hw/ideos_x5/"
after flashing B136, my phone could boot but things like custom boot animation, ring tones were lost..
i had to rename "hw" to "pccw", "ideos_x5" to "hk" to make them re-appear..
thus the linkage to this special folder tree seems to survive after complete wipes..
anyway before anyone tells me how to remove the whole tree, i shall leave them there..

actually it gets wiped (probably by the update_cust.app part in the B136 stock rom)..
before its "/cust_backup/image/cust_data/pccw/hk/"..
and after flashing B136 it changes to "/cust_backup/image/cust_data/hw/ideos_x5/"..
thus its updated, but somehow i have to manually rename "/hw/ideos_x5/" back to "/pccw/hk/" in order to make my custom boot animation and ring tones work again..
they were put in "media" folder under the tree, but somehow they wont work until i change the folder names back to "/pccw/hk/"..
thats why i said the "linkage" to these folder tree got survived between rom installs, but not the folder tree itself (which was updated by update_cust.app)..
No it does not get wiped. The stock ROM (and for that matter, every ROM can do that) simply changed the files in the directory you specified in your post. It does not matter anyway (so why am I writing this?;D).

I've searched around various forums to learn how to do a complete wipe of the system to start completely brand new. I'm not talking about simply deleting user data, but system folders as well that may have gotten modified over time. I'm looking for the equivalent of an iPhone restore (it completely wipes out everything and loads the specified firmware).
So far I've seen people saying just to click on factory reset/restore in Android's settings or in CWM, but those only take care of user settings and files. I've also seen some people say that what I want is not possible.
Please clear it up for me. Is there a way to wipe everything (or reformat) to start off new with a chosen firmware from Asus? If not, then what's the closest thing I could do to achieve what I want?

I just did this yesterday by following the unroot guide on the sticky page. It takes you back to a 8.2.something ROM with the stock recovery and then the OTA brought me right back up to the latest .11 fw.
IT also wiped CWM and now it's bone stock.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me like this just removes/replaces the rooted files with the regular stock files, then loads the stock ROM over existing files. Yes it will appear as if you are back to out-of-box stock, but I believe you will still have random leftover files spread throughout your filesystem that had to do with modifications to root or whatever.
I'm looking for the equivalent of PC's reformat hard drive, install OS.

I went a similar route, mainly by accident. I went through NVflash, which i believe formats and recreates partitions and will flash a rom of your choice. I went straight from format to prime 1.5 in this way. Qualitatively, it does appear a bit snappier than my previous install (root from factory > upgrade to prime).

Is there a way to customize what it is you want to flash? I've only found guides on how to use nvflash with a permade packages.
Everything have worked fine until now..
Latest things i did was update firmware on the camera, then rebooted and the camera worked just as fine as before.
I had two framework-res.apk's that i have moded from my own frameworkfile in kitchen, i did try both out and they worked just fine before, i did rename them and hade both in my bluetooth folder on the phone.. one circle and one guage battery framework modfile.
I wanted to go back to the guagefile, so i copied the file (it was renamed framework-res..guage.apk) and pasted it in the framework folder on the phone, renamed it and now it seamed i had two framework-res.apk files... thought one would overwrite the other, but no it didnt. So i checked what file was oldest and deleted that and rebooted, now i cant get by the samsung logo have tried everything and it just wont go any further
Could anyone help me with what to do pleeeeeease ? i can flash with odin, and i have tried flasing kernels unsecure and original with no effect, please help me !! i really hope this phone isnt bricked now
Put phone in download mode or cwm and flash a rom. Use a stock rom made for your phone.
I would prefer not to flash a new rom as there is many things on my phone that i dont want to get wiped away. I have some movies in the camera folder that i havent made a backup for yet and i just cant live without them, if they are lost i could just as well throw away the phone

root it , then buy titanium backup from the market and backup what you want , then flash rom , then install titanium again , then reinstall back up , easy peasy
your phone will have what you want on it still and hopefully be working again

flashing a rom shouldnt clear your mass memory mate , your videos etc should remain unless you use the android restore function in settings or format it via pc

still flashing a new rom wont delete your mass memory files
it never has on mine , as the other user said , wipe , wipe cache , wipe dalvik cache , if this still doesnt boot then flash a rom of your choice it may bring it back fine and your mass memory should be intact
leomar2.4 / 2.5 / 2.6 / doesnt touch the mass memory files anyways so your videos would be fine and you would have one of the best roms going

As it is now i can only get into odin mode.. down volume,home button,power button and get connected to the odin flashprogram, that is the only thing i can do

Just flash a stock ROM with Odin.
It won't remove anything, it'll all br there.

Wipe will only wipe /data and /system which will be user and system apps and data.
You wont lose anything on the internal sd card and ext sd card.
You can always flash the same rom as you had before over the top which should fix the framework.
just flash non wipe rom from intratech topic, it will fix it for you
or boot into recovery, do backup there, flash new rom and then restore advenced only data in recovery
and as was mentioned before, reset/wipe/new rom through odin will not touch pictures/movies/music on internal sd card only apps and app setup with data will be erased

I must admit that my heart stopped for a moment when i couldnt get it restarted, forgot to breath but i did as you said only thing is i didnt flash a stock rom, i flashed a very nice rom called lightning and im much more happy with my phone now then i was before... in the end it was a good thing maybe that this happen to me today, otherwise i would probably never have gone from stock rom, now im glad i did it's faster and everything is better, and i could just now flash a new bootanimation that i couldnt do before, i tried the cool pc bios boot and im very happy with that, overall it feels like a new improved phone

All you had to do was boot in recovery, and adb a stock frameworkres.apk to the phone and it wouldve booted fine! Or made a flshable zip that copies the stock frameworkres.apk and flash that through clockwork!
...and on the 8th day he created the SGS II!
Just got a GTab 2 7.0 a few days ago. A P3113, so only 8GB of storage, about half of which is the ROM and crap apps. I've rooted before (had a KF 1st gen when it came out), and just wondering about a few things with the GTab:
Right now, I don't mind the stock ROM so much. There are problem things that would be "nice to have", but right now, would like to generally stay as "stock" as possible. That being said, I'd still like to "de-crap" the ROM to free up some storage space, and I assume that might lead to it running a bit better, since so much seems to just pop-in while running other apps. So:
I know I need to root first, so my first question - how reliable is that? I'm on a Mac, but have access to a netbook running Win7, so could run Odin to "get things done". I'd hate to brick the thing, still having 51 weeks of warranty left. (I also understand that I might want to install something else to keep the flash count from showing it's been flashed).
Once root'ed, is it better to use one of the "de-crapped" ROMs floating around? And if so, which seems "best" (yeah, I know the moderators hate the "which is best" - I'm looking for stock - and STABLE)
Or, is it better to eliminate the apps myself? (Not sure if this is a wholesale "rm" to remove certain apps from a terminal app, using adb, or if they have some uninstallers embedded somewhere, or...) - so better to use one of the ROMs floating around?
Is the GTab 2 "stable", so even if you trash a ROM, you can still get into the ROM manager to restore a previously working, or stock, ROM?
I'll probably come up with a couple more questions, especially depending on the replies... TIA

1- Rooting is easy and reliable. you may use "CF-Auto-Root" tool (search for it in XDA forum).
But you need to remember that rooting and custom ROMs void your warranty.
2- If you just need to free some storage space, you may use an app such as "Clean Master" to uninstall system apps and get rid of temp and junk files.
3- If you opt to use a custom ROM make sure it is very well supported and maintained.

Thanks - but prior to using Clean Master I assume I better either get a stock image to reload, or use CWM so I can make a backup of the ROM before messing something up?

Taking a backup is always good thing to do. I suggest you try clean master to know how it works and what does it do.

Thanks - I plan to use Clean Master. Allows me to be selective about what I remove/move, instead of getting a ROM from someone and they removed the ONE THING I really wanted.
Ok, got it rooted and CWM installed.
HOWEVER, when I boot into CWM, I DON'T see an option to backup my ROM (I've used TWRP before on my KF, so the menu is different).
What I've got on my screen in CWM:
Android system recover <3e>
Volume up/down to move highlight;
power button to select.
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
That's it. Where's the option to do a ROM backup? Oh, used file P3113_SAMSUNG_RECOVERY_SUPERSU-0.96_BUSYBOX-1.20.2.tar.md5.zip Had CWM and Root all in one. I do have GT-P3113_ClockworkMod-Recovery_6.0.1.0.tar as well. Should I just go through procedure again to flash this CWM? Will it still retain SU?
nandroid backup ok to use? Seems it's just a wrapper for a backup script...

I don't know what was wrong with the CWM I installed via the aforementioned file (P3113_SAMSUNG_RECOVERY_SUPERSU-0.96_BUSYBOX-1.20.2.tar.md5.zip), but I went to the CWM site, D/L'ed the latest touch enabled CWM for the P3113 (6.0.2.3, I believe), and installed it over the existing recovery image on the device (I had to create my own .tar.md5 - easy with *nix).
Anyway, I now have access to the backup options by scrolling down. The image from P3113_SAMSUNG_RECOVERY_SUPERSU-0.96_BUSYBOX-1.20.2.tar.md5.zip, simply wouldn't scroll beyond what I listed earlier. Now can scroll down, make backups, etc.
Haven't tried yet to re-install the image I made with nandroid - I'm a bit leery of that - so I'll just get the stock 4.1.1 ROM from sammobile, and keep it around....

That's exactly what I did today, grabbed the stock image for a backup, rooted with Odin and CWM then flashed a CM based 4.3 ROM. Piece of cake.
Hello everyone. I've tried really hard to DO NOT create this thread. As it happens I have used all I know (which isnt much) to try to fix this problem but got no success.
So I've got a S4 GT-I9505. I've recently decided to root it mainly because I wanted full External SD-card access to some apps. Here are some facts about my rooting:
- I used TWRP;
- I used SuperSU;
- I kept the stock ROM. I personally dont have anything to complain about it so I didnt install any custom ROMs.
- I had a problem with Knox afterwards, the phone was rebooting and freezing. I made a backup on Titanium and then uninstalled every Knox-related app.
- The system worked nicely for days.
Then I decided to clean some garbage that I knew was present in my device, like ghost folders and foster files and such.
- I installed SD-Maid and Clean Master.
- On the same day, I switched my SIM card because of some personal issues. I'm brazilian but now living in Deutschland. The change of SIM cards (if it matters) was as follows: bought the phone > inserted brazilian SIM > inserted deutsch SIM > inserted brazilian SIM (due to a personal problem) > back to deutsch SIM. I'm telling you this because I'm not sure of how relevant it is. Just trying to give as much info as possible.
- I cleaned some **** with SD-Maid AND Clean Master.
What happened next:
- WhatsApp was broken. I couldnt receive any media (voice recordings, videos, images, nothing at all).
- I tried re-installing the App
- I tried to restore my WhatsApp backup from Titanium. No success*.
- I tried to restore my backup from TWRD. No success.
- I tried to change WhatsApp folder (on data/media) permissions to r-r-r---- and then back to 00775. No success.
- I tried re-registering my phone to whatsapp network. No success.
- I tried deleting whatsapp folder on data/media (WhatsApp FAQ recomendation). Thats when WhatsApp stopped also SENDING media. I couldnt simply send or receive through the app.
- I tried re-creating the WhatsApp media folder on data. No success.
- I tried a factory reset followed by a TWRD backup restoration. WhatsApp was once again SENDING, but NOT RECEIVING media. When my phone finished booting and the launcher loaded, I was immediately prompted by a WhatsApp message saying something like "Conection failed! Please verify your phone number. WhatsApp can only be installed in one device per phone-number" even though everything else internet-related was working just fine.
(* when I say NO SUCCESS, I refer to the fact that WhatsApp still not receiving/sending media, not that I failed to implement that given fix)
Now, when I wiped my phone to factory defaults, I noticed that in TWRD prompt it said something like "Wiping Data, EXCEPT data/media". My knowledge of the subject isnt great but I think it might be something with this folder.
Any thoughts?

My whatsapp works fine with a different no. And has a diff sim for calling.
Maybe to much of backup.. restore...bla bla..made it crash.

It was not very clear in my post, indeed, but yes I have tried that as well. Thanks for trying!
I would just take the shortcut.
- Backup the apps you want to backup with Titanium.
- Make a backup of Whatsapp from within the app.
- Wipe from TWRP recovery (I assume that's what you mean by TWRD). Use the option prepare for rom flash (don't know the excact words, but you understand when you see the option).
- Reflash the rom you are currently on with Odin (or flash a custom rom).
You can also just skip the wiping part and just flash the rom with Odin again. I always like to start from scratch if something goes wrong, but it should probably work without the wipe.
Then restore the apps you want to restore. Whatsapp should probably be working now.
You can spend many more hours finding a solution, but my guess is that SD-maid or Clean Master deleted something it should not have. Always be carefull with those kind of apps. I don't really like those apps because the benefit you get from them is limited.
GOT A FIX!
After 2 days of hitting my head on the wall with this, I came up with a solution.
My girlfriend has the exact same phone as me (though I think any rooted android with WhatsApp installed would do).
I entered her data/media/whatsapp folder and created all the folders that were missing on my own folder (deleted by CleanMaster just for being empty). Then I gave all the folders the exact same permissions (rwxrwx--x or 0775) as my girlfriend's device and voila! It's working perfectly!
Now just for future reference and to feed my curiosity: why does factory reset through TWRP do not also wipe data/media? If this folder were wiped, I would get a fresh WhatsApp install and the problem would have been gone sooner. I kinda dont understand the folders' structure in my phone. Sometimes it looks like I can get to the same very place using diferent paths (like /data/ OR /emulated/ OR /0/ OR /sdcard/).
Anyway, thanks people! Though I figured it all by myself, this forum still rocks!

After 2 days of hitting my head on the wall with this, I came up with a solution.
My girlfriend has the exact same phone as me (though I think any rooted android with WhatsApp installed would do).
I entered her data/media/whatsapp folder and created all the folders that were missing on my own folder (deleted by CleanMaster just for being empty). Then I gave all the folders the exact same permissions (rwxrwx--x or 0775) as my girlfriend's device and voila! It's working perfectly!
Now just for future reference and to feed my curiosity: why does factory reset through TWRP do not also wipe data/media? If this folder were wiped, I would get a fresh WhatsApp install and the problem would have been gone sooner. I kinda dont understand the folders' structure in my phone. Sometimes it looks like I can get to the same very place using diferent paths (like /data/ OR /emulated/ OR /0/ OR /sdcard/).

Good that you found a solution.
It would be bad thing if the custom recovery would standard wipe data/media because that would wipe your entire internal sd. People that flash roms don't want that to happen. You can still wipe it from the recovery, it's just in a different place then the standard wiping.

So basically its just a matter of keeping your apps and app data? Not something system-damaging or system-related at all?

No your apps and data will be wiped. Basically every part that could interfere with a new rom is wiped. It's only the data on your internal storage that is kept. So apps (like Whatsapp) also write data to your internal storage and that won't get wiped.
/system
/data (excluded /data/media)
/cache
and a few more will be wiped.
(There are more parts that don't get wiped, but that are parts that neither an app or you will ever touch.)
Now the problem is back. I can't really understand what happened.
I rebooted my phone just to check if everything was OK and then to do a new backup in TWRP.
Checked WhatsApp and the problem was back. Then I went to see the files and some folders that I've just copied were gone! The WhatsApp main folder on data/media was still there, but some subfolders were simply missing. I also noticed that my copy of that folder on my External SD-card was also gone! Like WTH?!
Any help will be much appreciated.
P.S.: and to my happiness, copying the files once again (as I've done before) simply doesnt work. This is driving me crazy, seriously.
this happened to me once, and wasn't whatsapp only, the reason whatsapp wasn't being able to receive/send media files was because it somehow could not access the internal storage.. same with all my other apps, it happened when restoring a full rom backup with CWM.. and the only way i managed to fix it was to re-flash the stock rom with odin

Not even a factory reset will do?
How do I find a stock ROM from Samsung (with 4.4.2) compatible with my S4 GT-I9505? Also: should I also wipe everything or simply flash the rom without doing anything else?
Now that you said, I also noticed that one of my favorite games (Mushroom Wars) has also stopped working. Might be that you're right!

Do as I suggested. Start from a blank sheet and stay away from those rom cleaners for now.
You could just take a clean custom rom, then you don't have to worry about deleting those knox stuff and rerooting again.

i honestly didn't attempt a factory reset because i wanted to keep all my stuff, so i just flashed the stock rom on odin and everything worked out fine, was the only way i was able to fix it

By doing this I'll have to reroot, right? Do you think it is a problem if I recover my backup from TWRP after flashing the stock rom?
Dont wanna go through the configs and app installing all over again.

you don't need to re-configure or recover a backup, if you flash the same stock on odin as you already had running, without wiping, it should work right away, without any issues and without any need for a wipe or a restore, you will have to re-root though, yes.

As soon as I opened it, it pop'd a message saying that he identified a crucial problem with my /bin/sdcardwhatever file. So yes, I'm confident that your solution will be the one to fix my problem. You can spend many more hours finding a solution, but my guess is that SD-maid or Clean Master deleted something it should not have. Always be carefull with those kind of apps. I don't really like those apps because the benefit you get from them is limited.

I just realized both solutions are the same, LOL.
ODIN just finished flashing the stock rom. Will update soon with the preliminary results.
Apparently it did NOT work. Not completely at least.
WhatsApp is now once again making voice recordings and receiving them as well, but is not handling any other kind of media. Mushroom Wars (the game I talked about earlier) is also not loading.
The system looks just it was before, only without root (I know that was expected).
Don't know what to do now.
Just one more question: how much of a problem is it restoring a backup using TWRP? I mean, in a scenario in which I get this problem fixed, I couldnt simply restore any backup due to the possibility of screwing my internal storage thing all over again?

Have had my Nexus 10 with a few years now and rooted it not long after I got it, stuck with stock rom though.
All was fine until I updated to the latest LMY49H Build using NRT (Nexus Root Toolkit) which I always do and it has never let me down.
But with this update I get the swirling balls, Android boot screen then about 10 minutes of "Android is starting... Optimising app xx of xx". I have wiped via settings, via recovery (TWRP and stock), Flash Stock and Unroot (NRT), Root (NRT which wipes data), cleared cache, dalvik, data using TWRP but every time I end up with this optimising apps screen.
I have tried restoring previous versions at setup (apps, wallpapers etc.) and I have skipped all setup options for a clean fresh copy but always with the same result.
I have been looking around but didn't find someone running stock rom with the same problem, If I missed it then I'm sorry.
Please someone help me as I'm going on a trip soon and will need my tablet!
Could be your flash memory is wearing out. When you are using TWRP try copying a file then reboot into TWRP and see if the file is still there. If it is gone it is bad flash memory and you need a new motherboard...

Sorry I don't get what you mean. do you mean to flash a file? (or at least see if TWRP finds the file?)
e.g. copy a file, supersu.zip or something in downloads folder, then boot into TWRP to see if its in the folder ready to flash?
Oh I hope its not the motherboard, the tablet has hardly been used compared to others I know of.
Do you know if its safe to revert to a previous version of android using NRT? LMY49H or even G? I was happy enough with those versions and only updated thinking it would clear the security update (7.2mb) which I ended up doing manually anyway (Unroot & Update, install security update, Root).
I had a problem like this years ago when I flashed a ROM to my old Galaxy S4, flashing a different ROM fixed the problem then, I'm hoping it will now too!

Right, I mean just copy a file to it that is not already there and rebooting it and seeing if the file is still there.
If it works then you probably don't have a hardware issue.
It is always worth trying to flash a known working rom, though you may need to hard reset to get it working.

Sorry, I know what flash memory is, I mean I didn't know what he meant by copy using TWRP.
I may try flash the previous LMY49H ROM then

OK cool, thanks for clearing that up..
This literally just started when I updated to the new ROM (LMY49J). I have done a full wipe already so hard reset shouldn't be a problem, nothing left on it now anyway. Think I may have done it already tho
Before the update I had a full TV series and a few movies saved into it and it had no problems playing/saving anything. Think I may try stock flash & unroot with LMY49H and see how that goes.. I'm away from it at the moment so hopefully will try tomorrow.
I have a feeling it is saving files though, displayed my old wallpaper when I restored from previous tablet option on setup. Must be saving this picture somewhere after initial download at setup. It is booting up eventually like, just after it optimizes the apps, maybe 5-10min.
What other issues could I be having?
You really have to create or copy something new and reboot the tablet to test. Files and setting will stay in the cache and so give the illusion working unless you reboot.
Also are you doing a clean shutdown via the menu after hitting the power button for no more than 2 seconds? Doing power off without going through menu can cause your behavior.

You have to copy something in recovery mode with twrp. From a different directory (or usb stick to your device) and then reboot to see if it is still there.
