Everything have worked fine until now..
Latest things i did was update firmware on the camera, then rebooted and the camera worked just as fine as before.
I had two framework-res.apk's that i have moded from my own frameworkfile in kitchen, i did try both out and they worked just fine before, i did rename them and hade both in my bluetooth folder on the phone.. one circle and one guage battery framework modfile.
I wanted to go back to the guagefile, so i copied the file (it was renamed framework-res..guage.apk) and pasted it in the framework folder on the phone, renamed it and now it seamed i had two framework-res.apk files... thought one would overwrite the other, but no it didnt. So i checked what file was oldest and deleted that and rebooted, now i cant get by the samsung logo have tried everything and it just wont go any further
Could anyone help me with what to do pleeeeeease ? i can flash with odin, and i have tried flasing kernels unsecure and original with no effect, please help me !! i really hope this phone isnt bricked now
Put phone in download mode or cwm and flash a rom. Use a stock rom made for your phone.
I would prefer not to flash a new rom as there is many things on my phone that i dont want to get wiped away. I have some movies in the camera folder that i havent made a backup for yet and i just cant live without them, if they are lost i could just as well throw away the phone

root it , then buy titanium backup from the market and backup what you want , then flash rom , then install titanium again , then reinstall back up , easy peasy
your phone will have what you want on it still and hopefully be working again

flashing a rom shouldnt clear your mass memory mate , your videos etc should remain unless you use the android restore function in settings or format it via pc

still flashing a new rom wont delete your mass memory files
it never has on mine , as the other user said , wipe , wipe cache , wipe dalvik cache , if this still doesnt boot then flash a rom of your choice it may bring it back fine and your mass memory should be intact
leomar2.4 / 2.5 / 2.6 / doesnt touch the mass memory files anyways so your videos would be fine and you would have one of the best roms going

As it is now i can only get into odin mode.. down volume,home button,power button and get connected to the odin flashprogram, that is the only thing i can do
So even if my pictures and movies are on phones internal sd-card it wont be deleted ?? i just need to know this before i do something major like new rom.
I have a external sd-card to and i guess that wont be effected, but i dont know about the internal sd-card
Can i flash a rom without do those wipe cleaning stuff i read about that seams to be important to do before flashing a new rom ?
If it is just the framework-res.apk file thats wrong, cant i flash a new framework file with odin ? if for some reason there was something wrong there.
What rom do you use now? Wiping data wipes everything, wiping cache and dalvik cache shouldn't delete any personal data.

Just flash a stock ROM with Odin.
It won't remove anything, it'll all br there.

Wipe will only wipe /data and /system which will be user and system apps and data.
You wont lose anything on the internal sd card and ext sd card.
You can always flash the same rom as you had before over the top which should fix the framework.
just flash non wipe rom from intratech topic, it will fix it for you
or boot into recovery, do backup there, flash new rom and then restore advenced only data in recovery
and as was mentioned before, reset/wipe/new rom through odin will not touch pictures/movies/music on internal sd card only apps and app setup with data will be erased

I must admit that my heart stopped for a moment when i couldnt get it restarted, forgot to breath but i did as you said only thing is i didnt flash a stock rom, i flashed a very nice rom called lightning and im much more happy with my phone now then i was before... in the end it was a good thing maybe that this happen to me today, otherwise i would probably never have gone from stock rom, now im glad i did it's faster and everything is better, and i could just now flash a new bootanimation that i couldnt do before, i tried the cool pc bios boot and im very happy with that, overall it feels like a new improved phone

All you had to do was boot in recovery, and adb a stock frameworkres.apk to the phone and it wouldve booted fine! Or made a flshable zip that copies the stock frameworkres.apk and flash that through clockwork!
...and on the 8th day he created the SGS II!

CWM doesnt seem to work for me. Why do more cooks just do DFT?
Because its easier, and works for 99% of people if you follow directions,and also wrong section for this post.
actually just to thorw my thoughts there. i perfer DTF. i find it kind of disappointing that theres alot of CWM but not of DFT going on.

Cwm is way better imo. You need to use selected partitions with each build type. I say make em all flashable through cwm.
I don't get why some have issues with CWM. It's SO much simpler to use in long term operations or if you're a flashoholic. If you say it doesn't work for you, obviously you've done something wrong. Most of the time, it's all a question of having the right partition sizes. If you want ALL ROMs to be compatible, simply flash the 400Mb CWM partition layout and use App2SD+ if you have a leo. If you're a Gingerbread type of guy, flash the 150mb partition size and you're set! Personally what I do is 30mb cache, 120mb system and the rest for data.
Also, some people have issues with CWM because they most likely have issues with their flash. Easiest way to recover is to flash a stock WinMo ROM, restore SPL, format SD card and start all over again.
These forums have TONS of information on how to use CWM and get it up and running, so I don't get it...
yh I like CWM better. Just much neater I think.

Plus you don't even need a computer. Also if your applying a theme and it messes up, you can just flash your recovery. Dft if you mess up you have to start over.
maybe the reason why i have not tried the CWM is beacuse of the partions stuff. i really dont get it.... and i have gotten fast at setting up ym phone. all my usefull apps are backed up on a box.net account just download and install. no problem. so yeah.
DFT all the way, until sooner or later all of them will be CWM and ill have to change over to it eventually... btu int he mean time DFT!

CWM is definatly easier. I will admit I was reluctant at first to switch from DFT. Old habits die hard I suppose. But now I can download a new rom and flash it from anywhere. And the backup is awesome to have!! Besides the roms are usually easier to put together for the dev's too. However, the one drawback, IMHO, is different roms require different partition sizes. If CWM were flashable from magldr, or a one size fits all standard were created this would eliminate the need for a pc connection all together.

1. You can make a FULL backup
2. You can make a FULL restore
3. You can wipe each individual part (data, system, sd-ext etc.)
4. You can flash other mods very easily
5. You can do EVERYTHING from your phone including download & flashing the ROM
6. You can wipe dalvik cache and normal cache to save space
7. You can format or partition your SD-card
8. You can store as many ROM's on your SD card to flash at a later time as you want
9. Which is most important!! you can update to a newer version of your favorite ROM without losing ONE THING!!
10. You can fix permissions and wipe battery stats
These are just 10 things I just thought of on the top of my head lol. I think most people don't like it because they haven't gave it long enough of a chance. If your coming from another Android device like me that had Clockworkmod then you couldn't live without it!! I can't think of ONE reason that MAGLDR builds are better than "flashable zips". This is just my opinion

About partitions..... only thing u need to know about it is....
Look at the rom u want to flash. You need to know the size of it after it is unzipped. Think of your phone as a box. And your rom as what u want to get in the box. Your not going to fit a sense rom in a 150 mb. partition "box" because its just to big 200+mb. So get a bigger box. Use the 400mb box. If you have a non tmobile hd2 u will need more space to pack your apps and userdata into. Your rom is the first thing in the box and its already almost full, so once your phone starts packing your apps and userdata into the box it gets full really fast. This is where apps2sd and sdcard partitions come into play, think of it as strapping a smaller box ontop of your 400mb box and shipping for the same price. Basically make sure your box (partition) is big enough to fit all your **** in. Easy cheesy!!!!

+1 Best explanation about CWM, DFT is good to start form scratch. Go with CWM and you never look back.

It's all a conspiracy, the devs all got togehter and said if they only build CWM builds then bigdookie won't be able to flash any of the builds LOL
Seriously though, CWM is so easy to use (besides the benefits pointed out by motoman) - especially if you're on magldr 1.13 - just decide what partition size you need for your zip rom (usually specified in the rom thread) and flash it - you even get to use DAF to flash the partition, so you shouldn't have any problem
To access CWM, in magldr menu go to AD Recovery and you are in Recovery mode.
I just started using CWM and love it,my main question is this. if i try a rom i like, get it all set up and working, and then make a backup in cwm, do i need to keep the copy of the zipped rom on my card, or is the backup enough?
along those same lines, if i try a second rom, and then get it set up and do a backup, can i just restore from the previous roms cmw backup file, or do i have to reflash the previous rom and then do the restore?
just curious, cuz i like trying different roms, but i want to keep a "safety" restore point no matter what rom i switch to.
I hope this makes sense?

The backup will contain everything you need to do a full restore. You can trash the zip of the rom. If you need it again for some reason just download it again. You can have as many different backups as your sdcard can hold. They are saved in the clockwork folder by date and time. By the way your sdcard will fill up fast doing 4 or 5 backups so don't be alarmed when it is suddenly full, just go delete old ones. Or do like me and tape another 16gb sdcard under your battery cover(fits perfectly on top of the sim card with a lil hanging out over the battery). Flash away. Okay, so you all CWM fans jsut might have agained a new member to the fan club. But i got a question. I have a US HD2. which partion should be best for me?
I am currently using the stock rom on my rooted g2, and I want to get cm7. I got rom manager premium, and downloaded cm7. At this point one of my friends told me that I should boot into clockwork recovery, format every option except the sd card, and then I should install the rom from the zip on the sd card, using clockwork recovery. He said that this would remove all the old system files so that the new rom would install cleanly, and that if I dont do this I might have problems running the new rom. I thought that rom manager does this for you automatically, as long as you use the option "clear data and cache" before you install the new rom. According to my friend, that option in rom manager (to clear the data and cache before installing the new rom) doesn't remove all the necessary things. Is this true, or does rom manager take care of all of this for you?
This is my first time installing a new rom, so I wanna make sure I do it right.
I really appreciate the XDA forums in general, so I want to thank everyone for making XDA my go to place for anything having to do with my phone!

your friend has the right idea. one thing I would add (prior to formatting anything) is making a nandroid backup of your stock setup.
also, don't rely on rom manager to perform any CWM recovery functions properly. anything that will be done via recovery (ie flashing a rom, making a backup, etc) should be done straight through recovery and not through rom manager. ymmv there, but better to be safe than sorry.
Thanks for the quick and detailed post. I already made a nandroid backup, and saved it on both my laptop and my phone, but I forgot to mention it in the post. I will go ahead and flash the rom diretly from clockwork recovery. Thanks a lot for the advice!

@ mods i realised my mistake in posting this in the wrong section and posted in the right one but people are replying to this one......so please dont delete this just yet
I in my infinite wisdom tried to mod a file on my phone. I did a titanium backup 1st but forgot to move it to my external SD Doh!
So that went wrong and now I'm stuck in a boot loop with only the stock recovery screen. Need to install stock rom and adb not recognized. (Im sure ill figure that) but my main question is, is there some way to recover data from the internal "sd" memory?
I really appreciate any advice anyone can give
I am not sure if I understood your question.. if you have CWM then just access recovery mode and you will have an option to mount the SD and you will be able to access all your files via USB from your PC

I don't have cwm . Like I said I only have the stock recovery screens I.e factory reset and download mode.
Do a factory reset, it won't erase your data.
Not sure that would work. It says wipe user data and factory reset so surely it would wipe my data. Plus I don't think that'll work anyway as I changed a file which caused the boot loop so I don't think a factory reset will fix that file.

what info are you trying to get off the device? the sms etc are stored on your data and will be wiped by a reinstall/factory reset
anything on the usb side for storage will not get touched
Factory reset wont clear anything on the internal_sd

it depends on if you use a wipe or non wipe rom, a non wipe wil lkeep qall the data stored on the android system intact but you might get bootloops if it doesnt replace the file you say you deleted

Thanks Richy99, i took the plunge and followed nasgilani's guide to installing stock rom, i was supprised when it completed that even my home screens etc were as they were before (appart from widgets being blank) and glad to see "as you all said" my data intact.
i shall be more cautious before i start messing with mods next time
basically internal usb storage of 11gb will never be touched when you factory reset nor wil lanything on an external sd card
the only thing that gets wiped is the 1gb internal space for the rom and data on that partition such as sms/email etc
I know this is an old topic but I noticed it wasn't exactly answered.. I'm trying to send mine back to the factory for warranty because the power button no longer functions. I have the stock rom and recovery and I'm stuck in boot loop because I can't execute factory wipe with the power button. I'd like to pull my data off of the internal SD but am unable to fix the bootloop without forcing the wipe.
I know metter is over now, it was just ur worrying, otherwise wiping cache,wiping data from recovery , flashing stock rom (wipe/non wipe) nothing.will erase data on internal memory.
Just for knowledge
aroma file manager is available, which works from recovery, it can work even you device stucked, unable to boot..

Yesterday my HD2 running ICS gave me some pop up saying it was installing an update. After that my phone rebooted n since i used link2sd a lot, my apps werent working, i also moved play store, i have to admit that wasnt too smart. Anyhow, after taht i did a factory reset with Clockworkmod Recovery n n boote everything again. At first it was aight but wen i installed link2sd again n the phone rebooted everything got messed up again. A sec ago i flashed the ICS rom again but nothing rly happened. Still there is no Ply store, so what shud i do?

If you have a good CWR backup restoring everything should bring you back know to working condition.
If not I would consider doing a brand new, clean install of the rom and link2sd. You could restore apps and data with Titanium Backup.

I flashed the from once but it didn't bring much. after the factory reset Google play was back every time but it disappeared after rebooting. do u mean I shud do task29? do I need to flash hspl again after that?

Task 29 shouldn't be necessary. When you say it disappeared do you mean the i on was no longer there? Did it show up on the all programs list? Did you look for it with a file explorer in /system/apps? Or maybe with ROM Toolbox?

So lemme give more details then, i did a factory reset, it was there wen the phone booted again. But after another reboot it all disappeared, nothing there in the app list or anywhere else, after another factory reset teh same happened, then i flashed the rom again. It was there n after a reboot it again disappeared, i rly dont get why this was happening, anyhow, i made an icon to the store after another reset n it stayed there n now it works but some basic apps r missin. Also it keeps having random reboots.

I don't know link2sd - never used it. My limited understanding is that it allows apps to be moved to an ext3 or ext4 partition on the card, yes?
If you do a factory reset all connections to the sd-ext partition are lost. Technically, the apps and data are still there but nothing in your device knows it. There may be a way to place link2sd back in a new ROM to reconnect with the previously installed apps but I am not certain of this.
Does your ROM have a DataOnEXT install option? It may be a simpler and cleaner way to move the data partition to the sd-ext partition instead of link2sd.
The Play Store should be part of the ROM you installed. I have no idea how it can disappear if not removed.
Like I said, if the ROM has a DataOnEXT option I would look into that choice but in any event you will most likely end up doing a clean install if you cannot successfully relink your sd-ext partition.

It does, im using then NexusHD2 rom, the one posted by tytung. First i did a native sd install, i have a class10 card but it was very laggy, so i thot ima do a full nand one. I also thot of installing Jelly Bean, do u need to wipe anything before a fresh install or do i just flash the zip over it?

You need a fresh install, repartition your recovery, factory reset, then install the rom.
Coming to your earlier problem, i used to use link2sd but it gave me problems, the NexusHD2 ICS rom already has an a2sd script. I think the problem is that link2sd interferes with the a2sd script in place. My suggestion, DONT INSTALL LINK2SD! It gave me loads of problems, not the one you stated but still, apps wont go the ext partition and all that....
So install the rom again, ( remeber to clear cache too ) and use it without link2sd

Hello everyone. I've tried really hard to DO NOT create this thread. As it happens I have used all I know (which isnt much) to try to fix this problem but got no success.
So I've got a S4 GT-I9505. I've recently decided to root it mainly because I wanted full External SD-card access to some apps. Here are some facts about my rooting:
- I used TWRP;
- I used SuperSU;
- I kept the stock ROM. I personally dont have anything to complain about it so I didnt install any custom ROMs.
- I had a problem with Knox afterwards, the phone was rebooting and freezing. I made a backup on Titanium and then uninstalled every Knox-related app.
- The system worked nicely for days.
Then I decided to clean some garbage that I knew was present in my device, like ghost folders and foster files and such.
- I installed SD-Maid and Clean Master.
- On the same day, I switched my SIM card because of some personal issues. I'm brazilian but now living in Deutschland. The change of SIM cards (if it matters) was as follows: bought the phone > inserted brazilian SIM > inserted deutsch SIM > inserted brazilian SIM (due to a personal problem) > back to deutsch SIM. I'm telling you this because I'm not sure of how relevant it is. Just trying to give as much info as possible.
- I cleaned some **** with SD-Maid AND Clean Master.
What happened next:
- WhatsApp was broken. I couldnt receive any media (voice recordings, videos, images, nothing at all).
- I tried re-installing the App
- I tried to restore my WhatsApp backup from Titanium. No success*.
- I tried to restore my backup from TWRD. No success.
- I tried to change WhatsApp folder (on data/media) permissions to r-r-r---- and then back to 00775. No success.
- I tried re-registering my phone to whatsapp network. No success.
- I tried deleting whatsapp folder on data/media (WhatsApp FAQ recomendation). Thats when WhatsApp stopped also SENDING media. I couldnt simply send or receive through the app.
- I tried re-creating the WhatsApp media folder on data. No success.
- I tried a factory reset followed by a TWRD backup restoration. WhatsApp was once again SENDING, but NOT RECEIVING media. When my phone finished booting and the launcher loaded, I was immediately prompted by a WhatsApp message saying something like "Conection failed! Please verify your phone number. WhatsApp can only be installed in one device per phone-number" even though everything else internet-related was working just fine.
(* when I say NO SUCCESS, I refer to the fact that WhatsApp still not receiving/sending media, not that I failed to implement that given fix)
Now, when I wiped my phone to factory defaults, I noticed that in TWRD prompt it said something like "Wiping Data, EXCEPT data/media". My knowledge of the subject isnt great but I think it might be something with this folder.
Any thoughts?

Do nothing. Delete your account from whatsapp and recreate it with the number you wish to use
My whatsapp works fine with a different no. And has a diff sim for calling.
Maybe to much of backup.. restore...bla bla..made it crash.

It was not very clear in my post, indeed, but yes I have tried that as well. Thanks for trying!
I would just take the shortcut.
- Backup the apps you want to backup with Titanium.
- Make a backup of Whatsapp from within the app.
- Wipe from TWRP recovery (I assume that's what you mean by TWRD). Use the option prepare for rom flash (don't know the excact words, but you understand when you see the option).
- Reflash the rom you are currently on with Odin (or flash a custom rom).
You can also just skip the wiping part and just flash the rom with Odin again. I always like to start from scratch if something goes wrong, but it should probably work without the wipe.
Then restore the apps you want to restore. Whatsapp should probably be working now.
You can spend many more hours finding a solution, but my guess is that SD-maid or Clean Master deleted something it should not have. Always be carefull with those kind of apps. I don't really like those apps because the benefit you get from them is limited.
GOT A FIX!
After 2 days of hitting my head on the wall with this, I came up with a solution.
My girlfriend has the exact same phone as me (though I think any rooted android with WhatsApp installed would do).
I entered her data/media/whatsapp folder and created all the folders that were missing on my own folder (deleted by CleanMaster just for being empty). Then I gave all the folders the exact same permissions (rwxrwx--x or 0775) as my girlfriend's device and voila! It's working perfectly!
Now just for future reference and to feed my curiosity: why does factory reset through TWRP do not also wipe data/media? If this folder were wiped, I would get a fresh WhatsApp install and the problem would have been gone sooner. I kinda dont understand the folders' structure in my phone. Sometimes it looks like I can get to the same very place using diferent paths (like /data/ OR /emulated/ OR /0/ OR /sdcard/).
Anyway, thanks people! Though I figured it all by myself, this forum still rocks!

Good that you found a solution.
It would be bad thing if the custom recovery would standard wipe data/media because that would wipe your entire internal sd. People that flash roms don't want that to happen. You can still wipe it from the recovery, it's just in a different place then the standard wiping.

So basically its just a matter of keeping your apps and app data? Not something system-damaging or system-related at all?

No your apps and data will be wiped. Basically every part that could interfere with a new rom is wiped. It's only the data on your internal storage that is kept. So apps (like Whatsapp) also write data to your internal storage and that won't get wiped.
/system
/data (excluded /data/media)
/cache
and a few more will be wiped.
(There are more parts that don't get wiped, but that are parts that neither an app or you will ever touch.)
Now the problem is back. I can't really understand what happened.
I rebooted my phone just to check if everything was OK and then to do a new backup in TWRP.
Checked WhatsApp and the problem was back. Then I went to see the files and some folders that I've just copied were gone! The WhatsApp main folder on data/media was still there, but some subfolders were simply missing. I also noticed that my copy of that folder on my External SD-card was also gone! Like WTH?!
Any help will be much appreciated.
P.S.: and to my happiness, copying the files once again (as I've done before) simply doesnt work. This is driving me crazy, seriously.
this happened to me once, and wasn't whatsapp only, the reason whatsapp wasn't being able to receive/send media files was because it somehow could not access the internal storage.. same with all my other apps, it happened when restoring a full rom backup with CWM.. and the only way i managed to fix it was to re-flash the stock rom with odin

How do I find a stock ROM from Samsung (with 4.4.2) compatible with my S4 GT-I9505? Also: should I also wipe everything or simply flash the rom without doing anything else?
Now that you said, I also noticed that one of my favorite games (Mushroom Wars) has also stopped working. Might be that you're right!

Do as I suggested. Start from a blank sheet and stay away from those rom cleaners for now.
You could just take a clean custom rom, then you don't have to worry about deleting those knox stuff and rerooting again.

i honestly didn't attempt a factory reset because i wanted to keep all my stuff, so i just flashed the stock rom on odin and everything worked out fine, was the only way i was able to fix it

By doing this I'll have to reroot, right? Do you think it is a problem if I recover my backup from TWRP after flashing the stock rom?
Dont wanna go through the configs and app installing all over again.

you don't need to re-configure or recover a backup, if you flash the same stock on odin as you already had running, without wiping, it should work right away, without any issues and without any need for a wipe or a restore, you will have to re-root though, yes.

Just a side note: while downloading the stock rom, I found this and installed the given app (Folder Mount) just to check. As soon as I opened it, it pop'd a message saying that he identified a crucial problem with my /bin/sdcardwhatever file. So yes, I'm confident that your solution will be the one to fix my problem. Let's see...

I just realized both solutions are the same, LOL.
ODIN just finished flashing the stock rom. Will update soon with the preliminary results.
Apparently it did NOT work. Not completely at least.
WhatsApp is now once again making voice recordings and receiving them as well, but is not handling any other kind of media. Mushroom Wars (the game I talked about earlier) is also not loading.
The system looks just it was before, only without root (I know that was expected).
Don't know what to do now.
Just one more question: how much of a problem is it restoring a backup using TWRP? I mean, in a scenario in which I get this problem fixed, I couldnt simply restore any backup due to the possibility of screwing my internal storage thing all over again?
