2.3.4 Update in October - Xperia Arc General

http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/produ...eat-news-about-our-latest-gingerbread-update/

Upgrade at a glance:
Xperia™ smartphones to be upgraded to the 2.3.4 version of the Gingerbread platform with new features including Google Talk with Video Chat for smartphones with front-facing cameras
Updated Facebook inside Xperia™ functionality for enhanced like, share and discover abilities
Xperia™ smartphones introducing world’s first 3D sweep panorama functionality powered by Sony.
The software upgrade enables consumers to turn their Xperia smartphone into a mini-mobile PC by connecting USB peripherals (mouse, keyboard or game controller) to Sony Ericsson LiveDock™ multimedia station. Connect the smartphone to a TV via HDMI to get a big screen experience.
Swipe text input - text input by swiping the finger from one letter to the next
Screen capture - allows the user to share a screen grab from anywhere in the phone

Just hope Swype will be not the only keyboard. I don't want it.
Great for screen capture.

What means
...will start the roll out during October at select markets.
Is this meaning that it will start in October on some markets and will follow other markets in next months?

Go Sony Ericsson!
Everyone saying they'd slack on updates like they did with the X10 series is now horribly wrong We're getting nice new features all the bloody time with these updates!
http://youtu.be/ejP-zWWei3I -> Video with even more new stuff!
Native screenshots!

Its nice with the new update, I for one like the USB on the Go thing with LiveDock(TM) station. So now I can pretend I have a Nokia Communicator 9100i again, writing mail, documents and calendar tasks on a small keyboard while traveling. ha ha ha!
Sony panorama, swype and screen capture, we already have with 3rd party apps.

Wow.great.can't wait.hope no delay.bravo xperia

AFAIK it's the app which has to be installed on PC also.

Not sure why SE announces so early. Why not just wait and announce plus release it at the same time?

Thought it would be already upgrade to Xperia neo, but it seems a downgrade instead.

I makes sense as the new firmware is announced with new features on the comming phone models. I am sure everyone would complain if SonyEricsson had not promised to release this for the existing phone models like our Xperia Arc.
I can just imagine how the discussion would be instead, everyone complaining that SE is not delivering the new firmware to the Xperia Arc etc. It is also bad that they promise to deliver the same firmware to our xperia arcs that they include in the new phones
I am very happy to hear they are continuing to deliver new firmwares with extra functionality this frequent to our "old" arcs. Keeping even new models with allmost the same hardware specifications makes it much easier to continue to develop and improve the firmware which will work on all of the phones. Our Arcs might beging to be left behind when alle the new phone models are released with more powerfull hardware.

The camera is a bit smaller but you do get a 3D like screen and hdmi out. To me it sounds like an upgrade and the 5MP might even deliver as good or maybe even better pictures than the current 8MP camera especially if they have improved the optics as well. Lets wait an see until we see the first reviews how the camera performs.

The Neo V is supposed to be a even cheaper version of the Neo, with the update the Neo is better.

You're totally wrong. As it's been said before, the only difference is the camera. Because of the Japan Earthquake Sony is having difficulties producing the Exmor R-sensors, so the Neo V is just a regular Neo without the Exmor R sensor. It's just a cheaper Neo. There is nothing better abuot the Neo V.

Looking forward to this update, in particular the 3D panorama shot. Glad that SE are continuing to release updates like this.
Now if only they would include Smart Dial........

Doesn't seem like much of an update comparing to what we've got with the latest FW. I'm not really looking forward to seeing this one on my arc, but I'm okay with it. Maybe if they add some more features... I hope they will, it's still a month or two until the release.

Are you serious? I mean, you don't have to go mad about the update, but still. You can't expect a lot of new features every update... We're pretty lucky to see so many things getting added at all really. How many manufacturers add so many features to a device after release?
But okay, everyone their opinion. What would you like to see in the next few updates then?

Well the 2.2 isn't even mentioned, i doubt we will get it in this year.
BTW, great news, so we will get the 2.1 somewhere near september, not bad.
We are of course very glad to offer this upgrade earlier than originally planned. Xperia™ X10’s position will also be further strengthened through the addition of HD video recording as part of the same Q3 upgrade. A further upgrade to the Xperia™ X10 in Q4 will make it possible to connect and display wirelessly content on your television and enhance the Timescape™ and Mediascape applications.

oh yea, makes sense
I've heard that they will skip froyo and move on to gingerbread anyway, but that is just pure speculations/rumors as always ^^
I really wish I could believe them when they say Q3...
The good thing is that we have a fairly functional Donut, we could've been stuck on a stock version and that would've been painful. When you avoid the cool but oh so slow stock apps like Timescape and add some stuff from the market it's a really nice OS.
What would be awesome though was if we could get vanilla images without all the extra stuff bolted on and the ability to customise it fully. But without root that's not gonna happen. :/
Sounds like the root news has scared them abit lol
Nice move SE
That's good to hear. I see where SE is going with this. Previously they planned one big 2.1 update on Q4 but after receiving numerous complaints they divided it into "2 phases" updates in Q3 and Q4. It’s clear from the announcement that the promised DLNA support along with other features will be postponed until phase 2 on Q4.

Don't you just love how NOTHING about that small update was mentioned? Did they just stop with that one all together, or what?
great news!!! seems that SE started to listen to the market and customers. love SE!!!
so the first rollout will be september 30th! Just keep that in your mind and you will be ok!
Hopeful, but im still doubtful. Time will tell so lets hope they get it right.

* Apologies. I am aware that we haven’t followed up on the post re smaller software update that Sumit did a couple of weeks ago. We will get back to you with more info on this very shortly (read very shortly)
Wouldnt that be a little info?
At least it sounds like they're starting to listen to their customers "a little".
To survive on the market they have to provide smaller, faster update cycles. It's the new model to stay competitive. Releasing monolithic updates that take forever just doesn't work anymore because there are so many other alternatives available and people don't have to wait. They'll just move on and then all the work put into the update is wasted because no one is using your product.
So fingers crossed.

That's not how SE thinks and works. A more obvious explanation would be the Release of the X8 , so they try to push the Phone ASAP to the market and as both Phones, with slightly differences , have the same Specs they try to get the X8 on the market WITH Android 2.1 , so they have to hurry up and as they do 2.1 for the X8 they spend the update to the X10 a bit earlier. SE learned how the market reacted to their release of the X10 with Android 1.6 and I'm almost sure they won't do the same mistake with the X8.
SE is pushing new Models to the market very quick and they want to sell them all. When we get 2.1 we can be happy because i don't see a further Release of 2.2 or higher for the X10 , this will be exclusive for their new Flagships.
All android phones shall be getting updates.
The only way flagships shall differ will be through hardware.
From a reliable source.

Android 2.3.4 heading to new Xperia handsets in October

The Android 2.3.3 update has already started to roll out in certain regions as reported yesterday. HDBlog.it is reporting that Italian users will see the Android 2.3.3 update in June (our guess would be next week), which is when it is most likely to roll out to other European countries.
Interestingly, they report that the Android 2.3.4 update will hit the new Xperia handsets in October. We can’t verify this for sure, but HDBlog.it says the information comes direct from Sony Ericsson Italy. Android 2.3.4 will introduce video chat in Google Talk as well as Google Maps 5.1 with 3D, Voice Search 2.1.1 with Voice Actions and personalized voice search, and the latest version of Google Books.

What does 2.3.4 offer new?
Visio in gtalk...
But we don't have face camera on Arc
Can't we already upgrade those Google apps? I'm looking forward to improvements in the OS itself. Any?
Mmm,i dont need facebook issues, but really need less camera compression..
good news indeed
Hope they sort out the wifi issues.
This is just a rumour. Nothing official until we hear it from SE.
IMO there's not much in 2.3.4 worth getting excited over on top of 2.3.3, we dont have a front facing camera, and we can already get the latest versions of google apps on the market.
More interesting would be any performance improvements, bugfixes and enhancements that also get incorporated into the new firmware.
first of all let countries such as INDIA get the 2.3.3 update and then maybe we can think about 2.3.4. its really frustrating to know that we are just left like that when ohter countries are getting it and not us.
This is just my opinion
Waiting for 2.3.4 even Arc no face camera i want to try vision on Gtalk

It brings support for dual core processors, but that's hardly of much use to the Arc.

Gingerbread on X10 delayed in August

According to SE blog Gingerbread is delayed in August:
http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/products/2011/06/20/update-on-gingerbread-for-xperia™-x10/
While this is a bad news for X10 owners they have some excuses:
"...March most of the 2011 XperiaTM software functionality from e.g. XperiaTM arc will be included. The UI with the desktop layout and pinch-to-overview gesture will be similar and Gingerbread features like Wi-Fi & USB tethering, App storage on SD-card etc are included. Also the customizable horizontal app tray and the media experience widgets from the 2011 XperiaTM Products are in, including an integrated equalizer in the music player. Of course also apps that require Android versions 2.2 or 2.3 will now be possible to download from Android Market, e.g. Adobe flash."
August is not so far away so let's see. I am not o pressed anymore as I have also my Arc

I actually had faith in SE, but now they've delayed their update I don't care what device they will bring in the future. Also the only improvement of our devs their roms will be the camera. I will move to HTC (Only if they get a nice design) or else I will go to Samsung. They said it's planned for end Q2/begin Q3. August is not the begin but middle of Q3!! I'm very dissapointed as SE customer and I spend my damn money on this phone that will not even kept as updated as a Arc would be.
1.5 years left, and I can finally say Hello to HTC/Samsung and bye SE. I don't care what ever they say, they promised fast updates. Well I see, months of work and still a late release then promised. Also, great customer service. NOT, they can't even reply to your questions, and mostly in a NORMAL way without typefaults.

It's all explained in the Sony Ericsson blog
Global roll out of new software
In late September we announced the rollout of Android 2.3.4 in the Nordic Countries. Today, we’re happy to share the news that the upgrade is starting to roll out all over the rest of the world. Since the Nordic release we have made some additional changes which means that this update is actually new also for the Nordic consumers.
The phones that will get the software update are: Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ neo, Xperia™ mini, Xperia™ mini pro, Xperia™ pro, Xperia™ ray, Xperia™ active, Xperia™ neo V, Xperia™ arc S and the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman™. The update will be available for all unlocked phones and most operator variants but there will be local deviations. There are also some deviations on feature upgrade depending on phone model. Google Talk video chat will only be available for phones with front facing camera. Xperia™ PLAY will not get 3D panorama sweep but it will get HD video recording and the other goodies below.
The highlights of the update are:
Google Talk with Video Chat for smartphones with front-facing cameras
Updated Facebook inside Xperia™ functionality for enhanced like, share and discover abilities. We have talked about Facebook inside Xperia™ on previous posts.
Xperia™ smartphones introducing world’s first 3D Sweep Panorama functionality powered by Sony.
16x video zoom
The software upgrade will enable consumers to turn their Xperia™ smartphone into a mini-mobile PC by connecting USB peripherals (mouse, keyboard or game controller) to Sony Ericsson LiveDock™ multimedia station. Connect the smartphone to a TV via HDMI to get a big screen experience.
Gesture input – text input by swiping the finger from one letter to the next
WiFi DLNA
Screen capture – allows the user to share a screen grab from anywhere in the phone.
It’s quite a lot to grasp all at once. That’s why we are making next week an Update Marathon, going through one of the features more in depth every day. Stay tuned Meanwhile, you can check out the video from the guys at Developer World.
We’ll try to keep you continuously updated on the kit release. For a complete list of kits released up until now, please check comments below.

No marshmallow upgrade for Z1 or Z1 compact!!

Sony are busy congratulating themselves about bringing the new android 6 Marshmallow upgrade to Sony devices.

Think it's pretty crappy that the Z1 and Z1 compact are not included. Great expected life cycle for their products. Most new handsets in UK are on a 2 year contract. Shame they can't provide updates for at least that long before expecting you to get a shiny new phone (with another 2 year contract).

That would be really a shame, the z1c isn't "old" and there are no hardware limitations for getting an update. z1c was released in Europe January/February 2014.
I was opitimistic until today that my device would get the Marshmallow update. I'm curious if they will at least deliver security fixes for 5.1.1.
When you say that you will now switch to another brand - well, please tell me, who sells a smartphone < 4,7 " with high end hardware and better support?
Good question grisu59964. Hopefully by the time my contract is up in May 2016 something new and shiny will catch my eye.
I've had Sony phones since they bought into Ericsson and to be honest they're not always great. Loved the 1st Walkman phone. (still have it in a drawer) But the Xperia U stands out as a particularly bad example. It couldn't even run Sonys own update to ICS.
Still, even with its faults like not locking the screen while its against my ear during a call, or the mysterious battery drains, random restarts, music player volume and the previous shoddy updates I do kind of like my Z1C.
I guess it's nearly time to root and add a nice custom 6.0 rom.
Lets post that we need it

Thats sad. I still hope 6.0 will come to z1 even if its not in the list. Like some said, there is no sence on leaving the z1 behind with a Snap 800. I would like very much to see the efficiency of the battery saving that has been developed in 6.0.
yes, it is sad, but I hope there will be CyanogenMod 13 very soon

I've got a S6 and Z1c. In my experiences, Samsung camera focus speed blows Z1c away(picture quality indeed Z1c still doing good though not as nice as S6) but if you need waterproof and microSD then Z1c better and much cheaper. Alpha is a bit expensive, you should compare it with Z3c in this price range.

Quiet simple : xiaomi is the choice i will change to. It's a software engineer, using the phones as a bridge between user and software. They're producing without win merges, the only contra is the online selling and the shipping duration. Regarding price - hardware related stuff it's the best at the moment.

Unfortunately, Xiaomi has only devices starting at 5" display size (size comparison). And who says that Xiaomi will provide software support in two years? Unfortunately, not really an alternative.
For now, I hope that CM 13 will make us forget that we use officially obsolete hardware.
heck. Z1 Compact is exact same specs of Nexus5 and not getting Android 6.x?
Z1C is more than capable. its just that Sony wants us to upgrade to Z5 Compact, so they won't make official marshmallow rom for it.
its the usual term : planned obsolesence.
As the updates are flowing in, i feel we've been followed much closely now, so on second thoughts, I'd go back to symbian and have Linux based laptop, sorted. Why can't we port gingerbread on contemporary handset? An OEM will never be complete and a custom rom would never match OEM's algorithms, catch 22. Look where CM had started and what now it has become same sh*t in different way.
Every company wants control but I have faith in Developers, especially independent. And all this "security" thing is overrated, what are trying to hide anyway? rather from whom? I mean, as a consumer.

Go for it. Takes just a few seconds.
Sent from my Z1 Compact
Z1c is mini Z1, witch is 95% Z2. why oh why not do it.
I get the original Z that has S4 pro processor ... but Z1 has SD800 and Z2 SD801 witch is same just bumped up frequencies ...
Meh ..
Side question, If I Bootloader unlock my Z1c, i know i lose the DRM keys, but what exactly i lose in functionality ? lower camera performance like on Z3c?
It would be shame if Sony would just drop Z1c. Leaving it with Stragefright 2.0... The phone should get the update.
I won't change this phone for at least another 1 1/2 years, so marschmallow would be great to stay with...
shame on sony, if they drop the suppport..

I thought 5.1 fixed it - http://www.ibtimes.com/android-511-...ria-z1-z1-compact-z-ultra-rolling-out-2096910 - or is there another one?
