Thrive vs IPad 2 - Thrive General

So aside from price, why should or shouldnt i get the Thrive? I am looking at it cuz i do love the idea of full usb ports, and i do like Androids a lot, love my Atrix. But is there any othee big advantage of this tab over the ipad?
Sent from my Atrix 4G, 2.3.4

One of the biggest features of the iPad that I didn't like is iTunes. You have to hook the iPad to your computer for so many things. For example, you can't add/delete pictures without hooking to the computer. I wanted a "standalone" device so I returned the iPad 2. It also had a poor camera.

that why i hate crapple i pad needs itunes for everything and camwra quality sucks

[Q] Please help me decide which one to keep...Ipad2 or Xoom

I bought an Ipad 2 on Friday and a Xoom on Saturday...The Ipad2 grew on me because its slick and pretty efficient. The Xoom wasnt even on my radar until I went back to Best Buy to ask a question about the Ipad 2. Long story short, I have 2 weeks to decide. Initially, I wasnt crazy about the Xoom, but its started to grow on me, seems to have more depth. I am a Droid/Inc guy, I root , the whole nine, so I like Android's platform, but I am scared about whether or not the apps and support will matchup with the potential of the Xooms hardware. The Ipad2 is like a lexus, rock solid, uber reliable, intuitive and slick - but also somewhat numb to the feel (experience). The Xoom seems more like a Bimmer...more fun to drive, but also more tempermental.
Xoom fans, please shed light on what you think are the biggest pro's to the Xoom from a hands-on perspective. Thanks!
honestly? Neither.
I really prefer honeycomb over ios. And honeycomb will be available on many different hardware.
Personally I'm waiting on the samsung galaxy 10.1. Its only 10 grams heavier than ipad2 and has better display and 8mp back camera.
For me the iPad isn't an option. Being tethered to their store is just not something I will do.
The apps will catch up. I can't the the iPad as being able to do anything the Xoom can't, but I can see the Xoom being able to do a many things the iPad cannot.

I own a Xoom, and I see this getting thrown around a lot -- Samsung's update problem.
They're miserable with their touchwiz devices (I own a Vibrant), but given that Google is using the Galaxy line of phones (Nexus S) to showcase Gingerbread, I would hazard it's safe to say if it's running as a Google experience device, the updates can and will come in a timely manner.
That said, we don't have a release date for the Galaxy 10.1 tablet, so in regards to the 'waiting game', I'd say that's it.
Android always wins over iOS for me. The hardware is almost secondary . Lots of 10" tablets on the horizon so personally wouldn't plunge right into the Xoom at the moment, but it's certainly the least worst large format tablet out there right now...

its a google experience device. theres no touchwiz, with virtually the same hardware (Tegra 2).
there won't be a problem updating this device (given that it will be unlockable/rootable, which most likely will be, but will confirm before purchasing).
as for the ports, i have no need for HDMI. theres rarely a time i need to connect a tablet to a monitor/TV. Again, this is my personal preference. No HDMI is not a dealbreaker for me. I never use the HDMI port on my droidx, i doubt ill need an HDMI port on my tablet.
there is no usb port, but USB is supported via charging port. in essence, a PC can recognize the tablet by using the charging port. i'm thinking this will most likely be a proprietary cable.
Of the two, I'd take the Xoom. I've owned an iPad when they first came out and sold it after three months. My biggest complaint with Apple is the file management system and lack of access to it. With Apple, if it doesn't sync through iTunes it's a pain in the butt. I love the fact that with my Xoom and my Incredible, I can browse it like a hard drive when hooked up to my PC, I can move folders/files around and have no issues. I love the fact I can change themes, my ROM, Kernel, etc. It provides the "end user" experience that I think any personal electronic device should. Moto Xoom all the way.
Xoom has a better web experience with the chrome stype browser and flash support. It also has much better versions of google apps such as maps, gmail, etc. The mutitasking is better and widgets are useful too. The Ipad2 is faster, more vibrant screen, better gaming device, sleeker, more app selection, etc. It depends on what's important to you. I'm on the fence myself and that's with the 25% discount. I don't pledge allegance to any device. The ipad2 is a very polished, well thought out machine. The price can't be beat from a hardware perspective. 30% thinner with better battery life and better performance than Xoom while costing less. Hardware wise there is no comparison. It flat out kicks butt on the Xoom. Software wise is another story. I much prefer Honeycomb. The only downside is that it will never be as smooth, fast, and efficient as IOS. We run bytecode due to Dalvik VM while they run native machine code. That gives them 20 to 30% more performance right off the bat even with everything else being equal. That's the price you pay for an open system that supports various hardware from different vendors versus writing an OS for specific hardware.
Anyway, sorry for posting the obvious. Just rambling.

if you're making analogies, i prefer this one. Apple iOS is like Windows95, same old OS running for the past 10 years, while honeycomb is like Windows7.
there are many things to love about honeycomb/Xoom....
1. customizable display and widgets - e.g. Thumb Keyboard (MUST!! 5 star recommended)
2. folder management
3. No need for syncing with desktop or itunes (never had to connect to pc)
4. Widescreen (perfect for video playback)
5. Stereo speakers
6. awesome camera (even better than iphone4) - i'm a photographer lover
7. 4G LTE Speed
8. MicroSD card
9. 2x RAM
10. barometer
11. Free Google Services! gmail, maps, places, navigation, youtube, etc
12. free mobile hotspot
13. Encryption
14. better Notification system!
not in any particular order and there's probably more. and i dont find any problems reading outdoors at full brightness. I know i have difficulties using ipad outdoors even with full brightness.

Its funny you ask this on a Xoom/Android dedicated place, go to an iPad hang out forum and you'll get the exact opposite response and answers.
One last follow-up...
What cool things would I get out of rooting the Xoom?
I was fortunate enough to get 25% coupon price and I can't believe it will get old any time soon. On the other hand I also am fortunate to be able to get the black 16gb Ipad 2. (Ordered). I understand that there's not much customization but I do look forward to the straight forward functioning of the I pad. While waiting, I've downloaded about 25 apps to iTunes and will sync when it arrives.

Yes but it doesn't have expandable memory, wont be uogradeable to 4G (biggest difference), both have the same processor and most of all it is built by samsung. I will never buy a samsung product for the rest of my life. To each his own. My hierarchy goes HTC then motorola and nothing else right now but that's just my opinion.

I agree with all of those except camera... we need camera mods to make it nice... I don't use it much so I don't mind but it is blurry as hell... iphone produces decent "hdr" photos. Then again my n1 camera only became usable with cm camera mods. One more thing that you forgot to mention is the market... yeah I said it... I prefer android market to ios any day... why? Its not closed... and you don't have to type your password in every time you download something. The fact that you need to enter your password every download is ridiculous... it reminds me of a needy clingy girlfriend. Every time I play with my iPod I thank jebus that it isn't my handset.

T-mobile galaxy tab vs. 64 GB Playbook

I have the T-mobile Galaxy Tab and I just bought the Playbook 64 GB version on 4/19/11 and here is my opinion.
Since I got the Playbook, I have not touch my SGT. Maybe because I am still in my honeymoon period with the playbook but nevertheless, it is a great device.
1. It is thinner than the tab but a bit wider. However, I can easily put it in my leather jacket pocket the same way that I did with my SGT. It feels about the same.
2. I feel that the Playbook has sharper and brighter image than the SGT. I enjoyed watching the hi-def movies more on the Playbook.
3. The sound quality is better than the tab because the stereo speakers are directed toward you as oppose to the tab, which directs the sound to only one side when you hold it in landscape. The tab also directs the sound sideway instead of toward you.
5. I find that the Playbook is faster and smoother than the SGT. My SGT has Overcome 1.4.5 installed and I thought it was smooth and fast but I find the dual core processor of the Playbook make swiping just a bit smoother.
6. Mutifunction on the Playbook is better than the SGT. I can access background and running programs much faster.
7. The playbook can transfer and copy files larger than 4 GB. The SGT is limited to less than 4 GB, both with internal and external SD card memory. I used to have to split my hi-def movie into two files because of this limitation so the movies would be interrupted. On the Playbook, I can watch a big movie without any interruption.
8. The Playbook uses micro USB cable to transfer files to and from the PC. The SGT uses its own proprietary Samsung cable with is annoying because it is harder and more expensive to buy the Samsung cable for the tab. The micro USB is more versatile.
9. Since owning the Playbook, I have done 2 over-the-air updates to the OS system. RIM is pretty good at updating whereas we won't be getting any update from Samsung for a long time (if ever).
10. Looks good. Subjectively, the Playbook looks sexier than the SGT. Although it has a bigger bezel size, the bezel is actually functional. You can swipe at the bezel to perform certain functions. The SGT only has one side of bezel that is functional.
These are my top 10 reasons why I like the Playbook more. Since I don't own a blackerry phone, I cannot do any fun things with "bridging".
Nevertheless, it still has some drawbacks compare to the SGT. The main thing is less apps. I don't care much about the ability ot make phone calls since I don't even do it with the the SGT.
So for those who love 7" tab, the Playbook is a pretty good device. Give it a chance. More apps for it will soon follow...especially if the rumor that it can run Androids apps in the future is true.
How well does it work as an ereader? Does it have an app from major ebook vendors like Nook or Kindle? And is the web browser any good?
It's nice hardware, but I think it's incomplete in it's current state because of the limited number of apps and no stand-alone email app.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
Well, for one you are comparing a, "previous generation" device to a, "current generation" one, so of course the performance is better.
I also considered getting a Playbook since I have been using BlackBerries for the pass 2 years, and I love my BBs, but I didn't opt for the PlayBook yet since I still love my Tab (and I just like the customization of Android more).

I wouldn't really keep my hopes up for the Android compatibility. If it's true, it most likely not run all apps, and also it won't do that at the right speed. Compatibility is always an huge compromise... for example I had a test of sorts with Apple's compatibility offerings. On an old G3 iMac with both os9 and osx I ran Marathon: barely playable on osx using the compatibility layer, bat out of hell fast on os9.

Well hopefully sometime down the lines the Devs may be able to port Honecomb to this tablet. I believe this is a great possibility. Then we would not have to worry about compatibility with the Android apps at all. However, i have never tested the playbood native OS so i wont dont know. Maybe the RIM OS is worth it enough to not need any android apps afterall.
Here is some nice reading on the potential of the Playbook.
The Playbook is be a lot better by end of the year in terms of applications.

Funny...
I actually bought a playbook and returned it after a week and after the blackberry world in FL didn't really deliver any ground breaking news to the device. IMO the playbook was released FAR before there was a substantial basis created for owning one. It is well built, attractive, and if there were more apps and more functions to the device, I would have kept it. I mean they market it as "the first professional tablet" but it is show cased with need for speed and youtube. I couldn't find a single thing to do with the playbook that I couldn't already do on my droid, minus the HD video. The funny part is I returned it and bought a used G-tab on craigslist and have $250 to spare. I have had more uses and enjoyment with the galaxy tab in one day than I did in a week of owning the playbook. It also replaced my gps, btw.

I love my Transfomer but I wish I had ??? and why.

Hello, TF'ers. I'am asking a simple question for those who love their Transformers but for some reason is lusting after one of the other tablet's. Please list the tablet you wish you could have and why.
Thanks.

Love mt TF but I always wonder if I would love the Acer Iconia A500 better.
I have had every tablet out, and the iconia was ok, the screen is not as good as the TF, but at least the browser does not crash as much, no lag while trying to type, and the usb...
I am looking at the thrive... if I know what kinda of glass it will have I would order one.
More than happy with my TF'er. Tried the Zoom, tried the Ipad2 but neither come close. I'm mildly interested in the GT 10.2 to see what the fuss is about but the lack of SD card immediately puts a dampener on it.

As a launch-day Pre purchaser who converted to Android in January of this year, I have to admit that I'm intrigued by the TouchPad. webOS really is SOOOO much better in terms of multitasking that I'd love to have it on a tablet.
However, there are three things that temper this notion. First, webOS does not and likely will not have the apps that I need for quite some time. The TouchPad won't even have Office document editing out the door, which is simply ridiculous. I can't believe that Samsung can completely redesign their tablet and release it in a few months, while HP can't get a single freaking app written that's absolutely vital to their product's success. Really, webOS made me promise myself never to buy something for a feature that's "coming soon."
Second, until a tablet has a keyboard dock as functional as the Transformer's, I'd have a hard time switching over. There's simply no better device for straight writing (i.e., just laying words down on the page) on the go. If HP releases a similar hybrid device someday, I'll think about it (assuming the apps are there), but Transformer is just a great all-around mobile device.
Third, while webOS is a nice OS in many ways, I'm disappointed that HP didn't design it to make better use of a tablet's screen size. Ultimately, webOS 3.X is just a blown-up version of the smartphone OS, with the same number of cards showing, only bigger. They could have done so much more with it. I really like how Honeycomb's screens can provide so much useful information at a glance. I often just turn my TF on, check to see if I have any emails, upcoming appointments, what the weather's like, etc., etc., and then just turn it back off. It's like a dashboard for my life, and so far no other tablet OS comes close in this respect.

I don't undestand why you would want any other tablet (at least any other android tablet)
The TF offers everything all the other android tablets offer PLUS MORE... Anything else would just be a downgrade.
the only thing I'm lusting for currently is a fully functional Netflix app. I really love to watch movies quietly at night and currently have to switch over to my Nook Color to do this. TF is awesome, working Netflix would make it total perfection for my needs.

The Transformer is better than the iconia. I had one, the screen on it sucks and it weighs a lot more. The only things it has over the transformer are the aluminum body (I actually prefer the transformer's body but most like aluminum that I've talked to) and the speakers have more bass. IMO the transformer wins hands down.

Yep the grass always seems greener on the other side. I'm lucky enough to be able to try them all out. I've got the Asus Iconia, the Transformer, and iPad 2 already, and the Galaxy 10.2 is in the mail. Starting to get a better profile of how I use them. Want to copy your camera photos to the tablet? Something with an SD slot will make you happier. Have movies on an external USB hard drive? Having a standard USB port will make you giddy if you want a movie off that drive to watch on your tablet. These emotional highs are momentary moments though, and 99% of the time I'm just playing games, reading email, checking the web, facebook, youtube. Every tablet does these fine, and during that time I appreciate the lighter ones. They all have a way to add a keyboard to them. Bluetooth is easy, especially once you've paired a keyboard. Apple and Samsung have $69 keyboard docks for their thin tablet dock ports. You pay more to get the Transformer's keyboard dock, but you get a far better integrated and multi-functional add-on for your money. Hooking up to these is an inconvenience of varying degrees. You are not likely to have the iPad or Galaxy keyboard docks with you when you leave the house, so they suck. Good bluetooth keyboards are always wider than these tablets are, and as such less likely to fit in the same case with your tablet. If you've got a case for your Transformer, it is likely for netbooks and will hold both the tablet and keyboard together. So if you prefer a physical keyboard to an onscreen one, the Transformer is clearly the standout choice. You have to weigh that importance though, as that keyboard dock doubles the total weight you'll be carrying.
I've been working on a showdown between these tablets for my blog. Easy enough to ding this one and promote another for a slot or port or not. Not sure the small time these features come into play will aggravate a user enough to choose ports over weight/looks though. Money obviously play a role, as the difference between the Asus and a full set of features with its dock and an iPad with all the same features via add-ons is huge. It help that the Asus starts out $100 under the iPad. Samsung is certainly brave going head-on with Apple, I'll give them that. They must be thinking that iPad buyers didn't mind no MicroSD or USB ports, and millions were sold, so microSD and USB ports don't really matter. They might be right. Time will tell if they sell more Android Honeycomb tablets than Asus. I can't see them ever catching up to iPad sales though, with nothing to add value to iPad prices. Pay that much and you might as well get an iPad. JMHO.
I am a very happy Transformer owner, everything else (at the moment) on the market, even the ipad 2, would be downgrading.
I love my ASUS transformer too.
However, if I had to pick another table between xoom or samsung galaxy v2 10.1 or iPad.
I would get the Samsung Galaxy 10.1, I checked it out at Best Buy yesterday and it was pretty nice. No lag at all either and it was very responsive.
Sometimes my transformer feels unresponsive, and it lags but it could be due to my tons of widgets on the home screen.
However if Samsung did have a keyboard dock like transformer, I would hop on it however I heard their updates were lacking and slow to be released.
Though I like how its lighter, thinner the transformer, and looks a bit nicer. Also I enjoyed the PLS screen as it also had more VIBRANT colors then the transformer.

I have two options - Galaxy tab 7 or ipad 1?

I have the chance of either getting a White Galaxy Tab (the first one the person says, which I assume is a 7", and we're in Canada) or an iPad 1.
I would be trading something and I would get cash along with either tablet.
Which do you think is actually better?
(I would jailbr3ak on ipad and i would root the tab. I'm already pretty experienced on Android smartphones. I have a rooted Motorola Atrix right now)
Is the first tab running Honeycomb yet? Will it support future updates?
Which is actually a better device?
as far as storage, the ipad is 16gb and I know you can add more memory to the Tab... but My Atrix has 16gb built in and i dont know if I am even using 3 gb.
Also my ipod touch 3g has 32gb and I am only using about 5 haha

from a sheer monetary standpoint, the iPad is worth more -- you can sell it for more and decide what to do with the cash, like buy a Gtab and have money left over.
I 2nd the notion that as far as Gtabs, you really want a 3G model, not the Wifi-only model, and preferably a GSM model -- make sure it has a SIM slot.
as far as which you actually want to own, that is a lot of personal preference. The ipad is better for browsing, viewing media, etc, due to its larger screen, and overall is more polished, and has better battery life. However the Gtab is more portable, has cameras, can act as a phone (again get the GSM version), and feel more like a computer (filesystem, Linux, etc). So it depends on what you want. I have both. The Gtab I feel i could bring everywhere... its just a big Android smartphone. The iPad I wouldn't want to bring to as many places -- it sits mostly at home.
Both are not bad, you could read this review: http://reviews.cnet.com/tablets/?tag=reviewCategories;revCatWrap
But personally I prefer the iPad, as I have got many apps like ifunia to service for my video converting, and now I have make the iPad to connect to the Apple TV, and can play videos&movies on it.
If you plan to use the tablet as a phone then a GSM gt 7" is definitely better deal.
But from the usage that you stated the ipad is a better chaice:
1. larger screen for reading ebooks a plus for your eyes
2. gaming is better supported by more ipad games against android where there is limited support for full screen games in the gt
3. better battery life for the ipad
4. more polished UI.
if you want portable, go tab... fits in large pockets.
if you dont care about carrying around a large notebook sized tablet or just want to be cool with the clueless crowd, go ipad.
I have both, and for a phone/tablet, the gtab is best. It functions for movies, and audio, and some car driving apps.
The ipad is too big to carry around all the time, and has no phone, unless you try voip, which I find to be scratchy in areas.
So the ipad is used to play games, and surf, because it just is ON at the blink of an eye, besides it lasts long time battery lofe.
Get the gtab, you will not be sorry.
If you want to enjoy android world then GT and if you wanna get bored then ipad.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I see most of the replies that say get the GTab is to use it as a phone and android device.. but I already have a very good android phone - a Motorola Atrix
so I'm partial towards the ipad.
I would not be putting a sim card in the tablet. I would only use it on wifi and i could make my Atrix into a hotspot if needed
Simple. You vested that much into iTunes? If so, iPad. If not flip a coin.

+1 I have both and like them both. The tab is great for travel and the ipad is great for magazines.

Should I trade my iPad?

First off, I have an android phone, motorola atria.
I have a 32gb wifi iPad, and a chance to trade it for either an acer a500 or samsung galaxy tab 10.1 4g. It would be a straight trade. Would you do it?
I like the apps for the iPad, and there are great games for it. This is my only major road block right now. Hardware wise, I would trade for either one easily, but it's the software side that's keeping me from the simple trade.
Are there apps for android that are specifically made for tablets like iOS and their "hd" version of apps?
It seems the quality of apps and especially games are better right now for iPad?
Ps. In general I do prefer android, I would never trade my atrix for an iPhone. I'm speaking just tablet wise right now.
Go to bestbuy and try the tablets out. The ipad is an awesome tool but it's not for everyone, just like the android tablets. Ultimately you will have to decide what you like best. They are different and you should never buy an ipad and expect it to be an android tab and vice versa. They approach the same problem in very different ways and you should decide which way you like best.
Most apps scale very well with the tablet. I have had it for a couple months now and have not seen an app yet that doesnt properly work with the tab.
As far as gaming goes, most games you could find for ipad you would also find for android. There are some threads about games in the "themes and apps" section of the tab forums that you could check out and youtube to see what they are like.
One thing that I really like about the tab, as far as games go, that i'm not sure the ipad can do is connect to your playstation controller, or a plethora of other gamepads that are out on the market. I hooked my tab up to my 55" tv the other day with hdmi and played shadowgun with my ps3 controller on the big screen.
Both are awesome and it boils down to what you want / like..
I sold my iPad2 for the Tab 10.1 and am very happy that I did...
Things to consider:
4:3 or 16:9 screen
Mono or stereo sound
Simplicity or customization
App Store or Market
There are more but I think you get it...
Either way, both are awesome!
You came to the Gt10.1 forum on XDA to ask us to compare the ipad to our tablet? For your sake I'll assume you're not trolling or trying to start an android vs ipad fight, but really, you're not asking unbiased people here. Did you really think anyone here would tell you to get an ipad? I'd say try them both out and make your own decisions (and for gods sake please don't post your preference here).
I bought the iPad2 and while it was the most liberating experience I've had in mobile computing, ever, it was within a week that the limitations and annoyances of iOS and Apple's whole mindset drive me crazy. I no longer needed to carry a big 17" or 15" laptop, but I wasn't allowed a even a basic file system, and anything I transferred had to be done through the most buggy app ever - iTunes. Yes, you could use DropBox, but only for apps that supported Dropbox. And everyday, as I tried to work on it, it drove me crazy and infuriated me that the device was so close yet failed so hard.
I had the 16G Wifi. I decided that I would sell the iPad2 and buy a used 16G Wifi GalTab 10.1 - an even trade was perfectly acceptable. I ended up selling the iPad2 for $400 and bought a two week old 10.1 for $300.
I only have two annoyances, and unfortunately, both of those can only be solved by rooting (which is only a problem if a person doesnt WANT to root) and that is that Styluses dont work properly on 10.1 w/o specific tuning (through root), and the NavBar at the bottom drives me bananas - again, removed through root.
BUT, beside those two things, the 10.1 is everything I loved about the iPad with 20,000 less annoyances. Perfect? No. But unless you are completely engrained in the Apple/Mac/iOS culture and you love that sort of enforced limitation, then the GalTabs can do FAR MORE than the iPads, just as well, and for less money.
As for apps, almost all the big games for iOS are now being made for Android, so the divide doesn't really exist there anymore. There may be a couple - maybe the ones YOU want - but for the most part, Android has most of them. The only difference are some industry specific apps. I went with iPad in the first place as I work in film, and the devs for film apps only dev for iOS. (screenwriting, slate (clapboard), storyboarding, etc) Film is mostly populated by people that think Apple/Macs are the only devices that can so anything. There are seriously TONS out there that are completely unaware that you can edit or mix sound on PC. Seriously - they think Final Cut Pro is the only program that can do it. That will change as Android grows.
One thing I liked more about the iPad that I thought that I would like more about the 10.1 - the screen ratio. I dont use the device for video playback as much as I thought I would, so the 4:3 ratio of the iPad is actually better to get work done and to read - the 16:9, while better for movie playback is awkward for web browsing, doc editing/creation, and reading.
I am 1000% thrilled I switched from iPad2 to 10.1, and the Samsung is every bit as physically beautiful as the Apple device - even w/o the real metal body.
One thing that I really like about the tab, as far as games go, that i'm not sure the ipad can do is connect to your playstation controller, or a plethora of other gamepads that are out on the market. How did u connect ur PS controller to your tab? Please tell me
Sent from my T959 using XDA App
there is an app called sixaxis that lets you connect your playstation 3 controller through bluetooth and then you can map the buttons to have it do whatever you like. It's kinda nice.
