Facebook Messenger for Android - Galaxy S II General

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.facebook.orca
New standalone messenger from Facebook. It's the old 'Beluga' app, redone nicely. Caveat for me though. Galaxy S2 with KG5. It won't let me install it.

Anyone got an apk?

Nice, APK worked perfectly on my Inspire 4G!!

I'm a bit confused as to why they didn't integrate this with the main app. The main app has chat builtin too but it's a bit cumbersome to use. And god knows why it's incompatible with out phones.

Does it have group chat? And my problem with the app is that chat and messages are separate even though they are integrated in the site itself

thanks for the apk dude!

Many thanks why isn't this on the market?
My bad it is on the market, when i saw you guys requesting apk, i assumed it wasn't on market. Nice find, been looking for this for a while, the ability to send a message from my phone didn't think it was possible, i guess I never looked hard enough.

For those who dont have this install MarketEnabler and set it to US, then download it from the Market.
This one works for the Chat portion which is iffy on the official App. I dont get why they dont just integrate it like on the site though

This one is not available in india

It has Group Messaging. Which is the same but from a Messaging instead of Chat perspective. This is a Messaging not Chat app.
How the main Facebook app doesn't merge Messages/Chat is really annoying. This is how it used to be on Facebook.com, it must be at least a year ago but they've never bothered to update the app. I get Message notifications for people trying to Chat but as the app doesn't understand the merge, they never come through.
It's miles better than the Message section in the main app and properly supports Facebook Messages/Chat threading, whereby both appear in Messages.
I've turned off Message notifications in the main app. There's no point getting two notifications for each message.
p.s - Some messages are missing. I open a friend and some of the messages that appear on Facebook.com aren't there in the app.

Working for me, thanks a lot!

is just your facebook inbox with the added group message...
no chat or anything..
works when you have the massage notification and dont want to visit the mobile site all the time..
maybe they release this app because the message section on the regular facebook app is not working properly..

I imagine so but why not integrate it? The one in the main app is broke and this should replace it. It's pretty slick.

Facebook Push Notification for Leo

I've been using blackberry for a while and the facebook application on it is perfect. Now after switching to Leo, I've noticed that the FB app on that one is weak.. I just would like to know if there is a better app out there. The most important function I'm after is the push notification; I would like to get a notification on my phone(either on Home or maybe a specific tab), each time I get a notification on FB. I came across Babbler for Android, I believe what I'm looking for is something like that...
Thanks in advance for the help

I'm familiar with this option; however, I'm looking for a more "integrated" application (with the OS I mean) such as the one for Blackberry.. I really hope people at Facebook or Microsoft will develop something similar..
That's the ONLY reason I'm hanging onto my blackberry. WinMo's FB app SUCKS. I was just trying this morning different apps which claim they can sync up. So far I haven't found anything that remotely compares to BB's interface. *sigh*
Try this: http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-fim-facebook-instant-messenger.html
It has a mode that integrates with the web, and seems to cache your credentials so that you don't have to manually log on. It does have some ads but it's free.
Oh, and of course it lets you do FB IM messages.

Facebook Apps!
If you do some forum thread searching you will find a couple of interesting items regarding this issue...
1) There is a thread from the writers of the Microsoft Facebook APP, who ARE aware of the limitations of the standard app, and are working on an improved version for WM!
2) There is also a team of equally pi$$ed off WM users who want a decent FB app, that have start writing their own! At present they are assembling a coding team, but SAMPLE images are available and they are making mighty efforts to accomplish what we all want!

Can someone explain to me why facebook can't get it together enough to get notifications in the status bar like gmail?
facebook can and does popup on the notification bar. Its just clicking on the notifications takes you to the website.
I get mine on my status bar.. you have to go to the website.. If on phone go to full site.. right side of screen should say connect on the go try facebook mobile.. click..
Look for Facebook text messaging and follow steps.. if you send the txt to.Facebook with fb in it and get no reply like I did... update your profile! wouldn't work for 2 days till I tried that.. sent and received my code.

How long does that supposed to take tho, I tried last night and it was taking forever
I am only seeing facebook notifications at the top when I open the app.. Do i just need to leave it running in the background to see these?
For awhile I had just been relying on email notifications, but would prefer to not sync that account..
Update! I started the update profile at 8:38 AM CST, and now on my screen is Device Configuration Teh network is preparing your services....
the time now is 9:19 AM CST..

go to settings, apps, then clear data and cache from facebook app, then download the latest facebook from market, sign in (HERE IS IMPORTANT NEVER CLICK ON THE CHAT TAB) then go to market, download facebook messenger (the official one) and log in the facebook messenger.. thats it...
when you want to be offline, just log out from the facebook messenger app with one click, and if you want to chat just log in in the facebook messenger app with just one tap, also facebook messenger app its better because you can have group chats, and send photos through it
hope this helps you
or just delete the app and use the new HTML5 mobile web interface which is great (it's like the iphone app).
Also do not forget to close all the fb session from the desktop web interface.

Same here! It's a lot better and quicker I find.
Also, I found that when I did use the App to chat it closed the the window on the PC. Don't know whether this is a new feature.
If they just updated it to make it like the HTML5 page it would be a lot better.

A friendly FYI for the new ridiculous Facebook app permissions

Just in case you guys don't check permissions when you update apps, or if you just have your apps set to automatically update, you should be made aware of Facebook app permission changes.
Any version AFTER 1.5.4 now has these permissions:
send SMS messages
Allows application to send SMS messages. Malicious applications may cost you money by sending messages without your confirmation.
receive SMS
Allows application to receive and process SMS messages. Malicious applications may monitor your messages or delete them without showing them to you.
read SMS or MMS
Allows application to read SMS messages stored on your device or SIM card. Malicious applications may read your confidential messages.
edit SMS or MMS
Allows application to write to SMS messages stored on your device or SIM card. Malicious applications may delete your messages.
Source click permissions tab.
For those interested I have provided the Facebook 1.5.4 apk which doesn't have these ridiculous permissions.
Go Google +!
Seriously.
That's ridiculous...

How does that make any sense?
Because you can send messages on the Facebook messaging system it should be able to read, edit and even send text and picture mail?
Um, no.
Its the same thing as if the AIM app wanted the same rights.
AIM messaging has nothing to do with my texts.
These are two different types of messaging systems and there's no excuse nor any good reason that this app should be able to send receive or even read my texts/pictexts.
Furthermore, we've been able to use the chat program previous to 1.5.4 and yet back then the app didn't want those permissions.
Gochat doesn't want those permissions.
No excuse.
Fred makes a cracking post on facebook, I want to send it to Jeff, but he's a Luddite who doesn't want anything to do with facebook, but he has a mobile phone, so I forward the post to him via SMS, which of course the facebook app will need access to in order to forward the post.
Jeff then texts me an awesome reply that I want to share with everyone on facebook, so I publish the sms through the facebook app, which again will need permission to access my sms in order to read it and post it online for me.
Does that make sense?

I can share things between apps just fine without them having the ability to read my texts/pictexts and having the ability to send them.

Facebook started off like this too, only certain colleges could join then only college students now everyone.
I know some people that are far from "geeks" that are loving Google + more than Facebook.
Now, is it going to take a few years before Google + is a big as Facebook?
Sure, Facebook is 7 years old mind you.

Doing some digging it's probably for the same reason why angry birds had the permissions, in app carrier billing via sms.
Now I can't find any features within the app which would allow that, maybe it can be done via the website so if you make a purchase in a Facebook web app perhaps it will send a sms from your phone to make the payment.
So, rather than start some paranoid ramblings guessing at what it could all be about and how they're going to bankrupt everyone by sending premium rate text messages every second, I thought it'd be an idea to actually ask Facebook, so you never know, we might get an answer.
This may shed some light on the matter

Well, it totally screws up the easy way of cross compatible situation that Gtalk provided with XMPP. So many Messengers on various Computer Systems, incl. Android and iOS could connect to a Gtalk account. Now thats all over. What has that to do with unifying ? Sounds more to me like "limiting".
I suppose, since Gtalk was a major part in Android, one that I believe cannot/could not be uninstalled (please correct me if I am wrong here), we can't uninstall Google Hangout now. Right ? Since if it replaces Talk, it must be a part of the System that can't be uninstalled. Or please tell me that its no problem to uninstall it ?
Any info is appreciated.

If I understand you correct, I could put in TALK again but next time (or soon) it will be updated automatically to Hangout again, since that is what Google will force on everyone. So there is no point in putting Talk back I suppose. I just hope they keep the XMPP Servers running for Talk to be used on other Systems like PC. So many nice apps that can be used with Gtalk. Pidgin, Miranda etc.

yes, you are right.
I also like XMPP Servers, but talk combine with google+ message, what a pity.
If you're on a computer, go to Google plus page and turn hangouts on, there is a green line under the picture of contacts who are online. My list of contacts that show are just frequently used ones though. I know this isn't the same but maybe it will show up in the app soon.
ya its a great design but really missing the simple facts.
GOOGLE if you're reading this, combine all the servers into one.
it is still called talk and still looks the same, however apparently I already have the hangout update... what can I do? I rebooted my nexus twice and talk is still there.
It doesnt look the same at all actually. Lol. if it looks the Same for you, it hasn't been rolled out to you yet. there is a phandroid article with a link to the app itself and you can just install it manually.

according to phandroid it will support sms in a future update.
I removed it completely. If I can't have Google Talk, I dont want that Hangout stuff at all. Google totally screwed up something great XMPP cross-platform stuff which no Google+ or Google Hangout can replace. Not everything wants to be done on a phone, tablet or Browser.
