Sad... That's what sprint considers 4g

Its just not about 3g in an area.I hv been traveling and it gets miserable when I am on roaming.
Even I've noticed even wifi is also slower on Nexus as compared to other phones, I compared it with optimus one
Is there a driver update for nexus which can make it better?
Thanks in anticipation!

What carrier are you on?

There are definitely issues with Nexus S 3G.
Not that serious, but they are present.
For example, I have visual contact with a 3G tower when I'm at home. I get signal readings into the high 50s, low 60s dBm while in the house. Even then, there are times when the phone switches to 2G.
Why on earth a baseband processor would decide that is beyond my understanding.
All other phones in the house never leave 3G...

the highest i've got is 5 Mbps down and 400 Kbps up
but that's because of the areas i've been to
i'm pretty sure if i find better spots it can go higher than that

I have the same problem: 3G is slow for my Nexus S. I also have an iPhone and a HTC Desire HD and they are faster...

This is what I get using my Nexus S on the Rogers network. If you want faster uncapped speeds on the fido/rogers network just flash KB3 radio.

Sounds like you have the wrong nexus s for your carrier to me. You sound like you got a model that only works on the 2g bands.

I only get a little under 3mbit down and just over 2mbit up. I don't really consider it slow though. I never have problems with mine switching to 2g or anything like that either. Again, just because you are standing right next to a tower, doesn't mean it's the phone. There are many more factors to consider than distance/sight of a signal tower.

Changed my kernel to Matrix and now my speeds are even quicker using KB3 radio on the Rogers network

Dear T-Mobile Customer
We have reviewed your recent coverage concern, and you may qualify to be part of a free in-home device trial! The device is designed to boost 3G signal inside your home. We look forward to speaking with you regarding your eligibility...
..contact info, etc..etc...
So I qualified.. The requirements included one bar 3g signal. 3g device, data plan blah... Moderate service, a land line for 911 calls, and single family home.. No apts or highrises I guess..
So I'm in this test group of 1000 lucky tmo customers that get one of these little in home 3g boosters,
Awesome
I'll keep yous guys informed..

Does that means they want to turn your home into a mini cell tower?
I assume other people around you can also receive signal from the device.
You are lucky... make sure you let us know how it goes!
How did you get into this "limited program"

So yes my house would be a small cell tower... It is a 2 piece design... One half goes where you get the best signal..the other your worst..
I filed a service request with a person on the team from New Mexico that is piloting this "new device"... They enrolled me about 2 weeks ago..
When my package arrives I'm going to post a video and a review.. I'm so stoked, I'm hoping this thing works like she said it would...

Got one in our store a few days ago. It sucks in the store because it can only handle 4 devices at a time... And we have 10+ demo phones... So the slots are always taken. The hand off from booster to network is pretty awful also

Did they give you any idea as to the pricing? I've been told by tmo reps that something like this would be released this year at a reasonable cost.

It would be compared to a femtocell... I'm not sure how well they work or the signal strength.. This cel-fi receiver works really well.. The signal drops when I go outside.. So it doesn't put out a whole lot of extra signal.. But it is very reliable/consistent..
This uses an existing 3g signal.. It keeps a very constant connection too.. The base fluctuates between 1 and 2 bars and the output box has a 9 for signal output. It dropped down to 4 and 5 last night but I was still getting full service 3g..
I've been able to upload and download files like never before.. This has seriously changed my perspective of tmo... I'm not even in a "true" 3g area.. I get flow over from 2 bigger cities 45 mins north and south of me..

although I think you said that this simply repeats an existing 3g signal, can you confirm that this does NOT use your home broadband connection?
Is the repeater in any way connected to your home network?
The repeater is not connected to anything, or plug into anything beside a power cord.. Just uses the existing 3g network

True 4g

Ok I just want yop point out to anyone looking at this phone that yes true 4g(LTE) is capable of higher speeds but initially even LTE right now in the USA isn't true 4g, LTE is capable of 100gbps, but the current LTE network isn't and take for instance surpass N a few years ago those chips weren't capable of full N speeds, true 4g is a few years away, yes LTE will be faster but until the networks are fully built in a couple of years they aren't true LTE or 4g, here in boston during testing it was getting rly quick speeds, but verizon has lowered the max speed, I just want to make people aware especially if looking at this phone

Thank You Captain Obvious.
I know I'm being obvious, but until an LTE phone is out, which will be the thunderbolt then we can see which one to get, and three other thing is by the time it is worth gettin hg LTE vs hspa+ people will be qualified for another upgrade

Verizon's LTE which is barely anywhere is only marginally if at all faster than ATT 3G/4G whatever you want to call it
And they have no fallback onto a true 3g network you would just get slow cdma speeds so people should really look at both coverage maps and then decide

LTE isn't "true 4g" either. LTE-Advanced is, and nobody will have that for years.
This is a stupid thread. The ITU has said 4G can essentially be whatever you want it to be, they backtracked, so it is now HSPA+ or higher, and also my pet hamster bob running on his wheel.
Verizon's LTE has several orders of magnitude more bandwidth in AT&T's not even launched HSPA+ network. They beat AT&T to market, it's no secret that Verizon is really good at providing a consistant and reliable network.
It's 4G enough for me, whatever that means.
My friend went to A verizon store and used a netbook they had an LTE dongle attached to. After confirming it was on LTE, he ran speed test.net, and got 1.8mbps down.
...
1.8 MBPS?
I would kill half a country for 1 MBPS.

He's clearly on 4g with full signal bars.
My 4g speeds are hit and miss here in San Antonio, Tx. At home I used to get 10-12Mbps. Now I usually get 5-8Mbps. Here at work I used to get close to 5Mbps with 1 - 2 signal bars. Sometimes I barely get 1Mbps with the same signal, other times it is pushing barely 3Mbps. My signal strength hasn't increased or decreased significantly at least.
Again, there is already a thread about slow data on Sprint here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=933900
It's a nationwide issue.
I miss being in 4g coverage. It was basically wifi on the go.
Although the latency would make it respond a second or so later..

I drove truck across country both 4g and 3g speeds varied depending on population density and even that sometimes didn't matter. Now I sit at home and rarely use 3g 4g doesn't exist but of course we pay for it....It's like paying a huge bill for something I rarely use..At home I'm on wifi.

the seriously you're better off going to another carrier. I like sprint, yes the 4g speeds are not as consistent as I would like, but most errors i see on XDA are user-based because of ignorance (i.e. restoring data from a completely different rom via CWM, SMH), which i believe you have plenty of. Do some fact checking and you'll see that Sprint has the best data plans for the money available.
Stop *****ing and go to Verizon.

It's a whole lot less cluttering when you post the speed.....we honestly don't care/need a screen shot when a (3G xxx / xxx) format works 1000x better
For the third time, yes it's a network issue. And yes there's already a thread about it. First page.
i fix my problem with mines. i just turned of my phone for about 15minutes. now iam back to 5-6mbps. for a few days i was at 1-2mbps.
well the only time I tried 4G was at CES - and it was slower then the 3G - and since Sprint dont have it anywhere but they still always advertise it all the time around my town and its not even in this state!
that sucks almost as much as waiting between posts and just to post in the development section
Dont know if this helps, but it did me...
All these roms are developed in their own home...so the PRL is not for your surrounding area....
I live in New York, so when I did a test at speedtest.net it showed me in Kansas...I updated my PRL and my location was back in NY and my test speed doubled.
Does this make sense?

SGSIII vs SGS4G
Well, my old phone is actually a Vibrant but I decided to test it against my girlfriends vibrant+ to see the difference in 4g speeds. My phone gets terrible ping for some reason, but the speed is much better than her phone(using the latest kj6 modem). This is north of San Antonio using a San Marcos server. The first speed test is from Wichita, KS
I don't know but I think I hit a freak spot because this area is always crazy fast
this was with the old SII

Is Wimax actually getting better in your area?

Is it my imagination or are speeds improving as more power users abandon the Evo for non-Wimax devices?
I'm now getting 8 megs in a place where I was barely able to connect a year ago.
(Network Vision rollout probably has something to do with this, I know, but I still believe it has to do with fewer users overall..)
And my best reception area has improved from 8 to over 10.
sub-80ms ping times don't hurt either..

Actually, you're right to mention the flip side of improved 4G: rapidly deteriorating 3G. Maybe a lot of Evo LTE power users are saturating their local 3G networks waiting for Sprint to light up LTE in their areas. Cause around here at least it's just getting ridiculous. See screen shot - can you guess which speeds are 4G and which ones are 3G?

Maybe a lot of Evo LTE power users are saturating their local 3G networks waiting for Sprint to light up LTE in their areas. Cause around here at least it's just getting ridiculous. See screen shot - can you guess which speeds are 4G and which ones are 3G?

Around Austin I can get 6-9 mps on the average. Speeds are awesome for me its just the fact that connection cuts in and out randomly.

At work 2 miles north if home I have full 4G coverage and have gotten ridiculous 20mbps speeds before. At home though it is fair to poor reception with an average of 4-5mbps, when I can connect. 3g has been horrible the past 4 months here all around. Good reception at work, no reception at home (thank god for my airave), bad speeds everywhere. Vision is supposed to be live shortly, we'll see if that makes any difference.

I guess so...it just isn't consistent with those speeds. One test rendered 10mbps and the very next was 5. 5 has always been the average here in Nashville, Tennessee.
I live in the heart of my city and its suppose to have 4g, I don't get it at home. If I travel 11 miles to work in the burbs I get 4g.
I haven't noticed wimax speeds increase but I have seen 3g get a boost. Hopefully that means wimax is next as lte is getting setup.
