True 4g - Atrix 4G General

Ok I just want yop point out to anyone looking at this phone that yes true 4g(LTE) is capable of higher speeds but initially even LTE right now in the USA isn't true 4g, LTE is capable of 100gbps, but the current LTE network isn't and take for instance surpass N a few years ago those chips weren't capable of full N speeds, true 4g is a few years away, yes LTE will be faster but until the networks are fully built in a couple of years they aren't true LTE or 4g, here in boston during testing it was getting rly quick speeds, but verizon has lowered the max speed, I just want to make people aware especially if looking at this phone

Thank You Captain Obvious.

I know I'm being obvious, but until an LTE phone is out, which will be the thunderbolt then we can see which one to get, and three other thing is by the time it is worth gettin hg LTE vs hspa+ people will be qualified for another upgrade

Verizon's LTE which is barely anywhere is only marginally if at all faster than ATT 3G/4G whatever you want to call it

And they have no fallback onto a true 3g network you would just get slow cdma speeds so people should really look at both coverage maps and then decide

LTE isn't "true 4g" either. LTE-Advanced is, and nobody will have that for years.

This is a stupid thread. The ITU has said 4G can essentially be whatever you want it to be, they backtracked, so it is now HSPA+ or higher, and also my pet hamster bob running on his wheel.
Verizon's LTE has several orders of magnitude more bandwidth in AT&T's not even launched HSPA+ network. They beat AT&T to market, it's no secret that Verizon is really good at providing a consistant and reliable network.
It's 4G enough for me, whatever that means.

My friend went to A verizon store and used a netbook they had an LTE dongle attached to. After confirming it was on LTE, he ran speed test.net, and got 1.8mbps down.
...

1.8 MBPS?
I would kill half a country for 1 MBPS.

Well we know what atts version of 4g is like and we've yet to see Verizon's. If its anywhere near as poor as att I'll happily stick with sprint... at least my slow on wimax is 3mbps and good is 8. I think you att owners have been had and are letting att off the hook too lightly.

HSPA+ Improvement

I know that the Atrix will not be compatible with AT&T LTE. When comparing Verizon's LTE with ATT's HSPA+, Verizon blows it out of the water. While I know that HSPA+ will never be as fast as LTE, does anyone know if there are plans to improve the speed of HSPA+ on ATT? I think it's able to perform speeds of 14 mpbs but the reports I have seen actually put it at 2-4 mbps.
Thanks,
Matt

They could very easily increase our speed, but the real question is "will they?".
It might be they are going to keep HSPA+ where it is because the network won't handle the volume of traffic, or might be because they want people to jump on LTE when they start that, (enthusiasts buying new LTE phones so they can utilize the faster speeds). in reality, we don't know, but can hope!
AT&T is slowly improving backhaul from what I hear. This should increase it pretty significantly, as T-Mobile is making similar improvements and seeing speeds in the 5+ mbps range. The most I've seen is 4.7 Mbps on my Atrix (up from 1.5 on my old Aria), so I know that the phone is capable of pretty significant speeds. The HSPA+ 14.4 radio on the Atrix is likely to top out at around 7-10 mbps once all the network improvements have been finished.
Most of the towers are fast enough already but they get bogged down easily by many more people using it than it can handle, when they increase bandwidth you'll see improvements

Speedtest, pretty much the standard we all use:
Speedtest Mobile
If you use it, make sure to check settings and select the server closest to you. Speedtest can have a habit of picking a very distant server for you. Also, it sometimes pays to try different servers, as speed results will vary depending on the server and who runs it.

Just as a recommendation, if you get consistently varied results on the Speedtest app you can try different servers but also try http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/. It seems to give me far more consistent results, but I'm not sure about anyone else. The desktop page should load fine with that strong Flash support!
Yup, Speakeasy is another good one!

Is Wimax actually getting better in your area?

Is it my imagination or are speeds improving as more power users abandon the Evo for non-Wimax devices?
I'm now getting 8 megs in a place where I was barely able to connect a year ago.
(Network Vision rollout probably has something to do with this, I know, but I still believe it has to do with fewer users overall..)
And my best reception area has improved from 8 to over 10.
sub-80ms ping times don't hurt either..

Actually, you're right to mention the flip side of improved 4G: rapidly deteriorating 3G. Maybe a lot of Evo LTE power users are saturating their local 3G networks waiting for Sprint to light up LTE in their areas. Cause around here at least it's just getting ridiculous. See screen shot - can you guess which speeds are 4G and which ones are 3G?

I guess so...it just isn't consistent with those speeds. One test rendered 10mbps and the very next was 5. 5 has always been the average here in Nashville, Tennessee.
I live in the heart of my city and its suppose to have 4g, I don't get it at home. If I travel 11 miles to work in the burbs I get 4g.
I haven't noticed wimax speeds increase but I have seen 3g get a boost. Hopefully that means wimax is next as lte is getting setup.

Why do review sites keep posting low download speeds with HSPA+?

I don't get it I keep seeing them post speeds of 200-300KBps with HSPA+........ running speedtest on my GS2 I'm getting around 1.5MBps and yes I mean Byte and not bit. HSPA+ in theory can go to 21mbps so there is still room to grow to at least 2MBps with HSPA+. Then with DCHSPA+ with the Nexus 4 on paper you can reach speeds of 4-5MBps and my friend who lives in another country has a DCHSPA+ modem and he is speedtested it for me and got 3.8MBps.
I see all these LTE 4G speeds and they're getting from 21mbps - 32mbps in most cases which is like 2.5MBps -4MBps in speed.
I mean I'm getting not far off that right now with Three in the UK on my GS2 and I haven't even tried a DCHSPA device yet, I'm not sure if three support it.
I don't get where these sites are getting 200-300KBps speeds from?
On T-Mobile with the galaxy s2 I got speeds around 15Mbps down and about 3-4Mbps upload on their HSPA+42. Nexus 4 should get the same. Although T-Mobile has very limited HSPA+ where I am living now so I won't be able to test in that same area for a while.. Those reviews are garbage, just saying

Yeh so you're getting like 1.8MBps which tbh is more than enough for a mobile but also close to these poor LTE speeds which are really just DCHSPA+ speeds.

It's also not much slower than LTE right now......
I don't see how all these sites seem to be getting such low speeds.
Its just depends on your luck on how close the celltower is to you. At my work its over 20Mbps with an SII, at home its more around 5Mbps.
I have seen lots of t-mobile and AT&T cell sites. Really depends on if they have upgraded to a true fiber, like using the local Comcast or other high speed provider. Or if they are still using the multiple t1 lines to power it.
A lot of sites with multiple cell providers, usually AT&T will have copper into site, while the others have a fiber connection. Just depends. =/ Even if you see fiber into the cell site, it can just mean they are using it for distance run, coming from t1 station down the road.
Some of these sites have some really old stuff in them. Kinda hit or miss on the ones that have a really good internet connection to them.
My input. Just from seeing the cell sites.
And if you are right under a cell site, you never connect to that one...to much signal. It connects you to one further away

They must be using AT&T because their HSPA+ network can be pretty slow sometimes, compared to T-Mobile that is. In my area AT&T gets about 2-4Mbps down and maybe 1Mbps up.
I had my father's galaxy s2 (42mbps) and my galaxy nexus (21mbps) right next to each other dieting a speed test.
Galaxy s2 always got double the speed. He was getting 14mbps and I couldn't break 7mbps
I know radios and software and everything else come into play, but the potential for more is there

Unless you're on att or coming from another carrier to tmo and not sure what you'll get why would you be worried about this. If you're already on tmo you should get the same or better speeds, correct?

And I'm pretty sure there will be different radios we can install. I'll probably install the radio I have on my sgs2.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
I was wondering how the speeds actually were since I'll be coming from Verizon.
With tmo in south fla you will get around 8-23 down and 1-5 upload.
What about speeds for AT&T in southern california?
Here is a wild guess; (most) reviewers are in an area which was affected by Sandy.
That's just B.S. I live close to DC area and I got upto 21 MBPS on my HTC ONE S. LTE doesn't necessarily mean its faster than HSPA+ .T-Mo's HSPA+ is awesome but probably ignorant people can't tell the difference.
You can check data speeds for your carrier at rootmetrics. In my area, T-Mobile gets at best 1 mb download. Verizon has LTE here which gets 20 - 30 mbps. Stupid fast. That being said, I'm probably going with AT&T via Straight Talk.

This is a very bad idea.
1) The flash will most likely fail.
2) If it did somehow flash your baseband will be screwed.
These are theoretical speeds, anyway. I have never had more than 7 or 8 Mbps down on my phone. And it just depends on cellphone traffic through that particular tower, I think. I have done speed tests countless times when I barely crack 1 Mbps on "HSPA+".
This is what I am getting with t-mobile, and i am happy lol

Is Verizon LTE this slow?

I just moved to Verizon from AT&T. I got MUCH faster data speeds on AT&T, somewhere in the 11 or 12 Mbps region.
Is this just the normal download speed of LTE data on Verizon or do I need to change a setting or something?

honestly it really just depends on the area as far as carrier speed is concerned. i'm on verizon...in the chicago area and frequently benchmark at 19mbps down and 6mbps up...depends on the time of day too, how far away you are from the tower, and how crowded that tower is. my wife has at&t ... sometimes her phone is faster, sometimes mine is...same with signal.

You're one of the lucky ones. I'm INCREDIBLY lucky to even get 1mb. My 3g is pretty much useless and LTE is nowhere to be found.
4g is finally hitting Colorado Springs. I've found it in quite a few places, I've even been picking up signal at my work. Nothing at home yet unfortunately. My best speed has been about 10 Mbps down. Seems they are growing the network pretty fast.

Like all carriers, it depends on where you live. Here in Dallas-Ft Worth, the service is good for the most parts. Yeah there are some parts of the metroplex where service can get spotty but for the most part, no complaints. That said, i'm done after the last 6 months of my contract. Going to a GSM carrier since i switch phones so much. My wife and son will remain on Sprint.
I went to Sprint from Verizon 2 yrs. ago for the price. (Before VZW had their family share plans). The data was painfully slow where I live in central NC. 4g lte is non existent and 3g will hardly load a web page. There are cities around me that have fairly good data speeds but for the most part, it's frustratingly slow. I went back to VZW this year and it is so nice to have fast data and a reliable signal wherever I go. As with everything, it all depends on the individual circumstances. Sprint gets bashed because they deserve it in most of those cases.

Yeah, they've made good improvements to your east in Raleigh. It was very hit or miss earlier, but now things are much improved with their network. Going around the mountains are the only place where I've been without reliable signal, but that's to be expected (even a Verizon phone had no signal there). Definitely interested to see, though, if Roam Control will work for the Moto X on 3G.
If only Sprint would go ahead and release KitKat, though. But that's a whole other story...
Right on queue, here comes KitKat. My wife likes her X, and we used to be on the 3g slow boat. LTE is amazing though... Sprint is really stepping up their game lately.

Winston Salem coverage pretty much sucks. I would've pulled my hair out without roam control.
Roam control is not working for me. How did you get it to work?

LTE is nowhere to be found in Queens, NY and there are a lot of dead spots on Long Island as well. My phone has become useless on vacation in ny. My friend on tmobile has been on LTE the whole time. 3G is basically 1x rebranded
Sprint makes me sad and the fact they may very well buy T Mobile makes me want to cry.
great 4G around Miami except for, irritatingly, the airport. Of course, waiting for a plane to depart is the time I'd most like to stream Netflix, MLB At-bat, Hulu etc.
Any luck with roam control
