Theme support, available under 'Display' settings or with a long-press option on the home screen. Still limited to a handful of SE themes but if you always wanted less blue in the menus it's now an option.
The Gingerbread CRT-off animation makes its first appearance!
The widget overview accessed with a pinch on the home screen now has the widgets floating about. Shaking the phone sends them flying. Pretty and smooth animation but it makes the overview practically unusable IMO, I'll tap SE about this.
Several ring tones have disappeared, among others the one I were using (Digital Phone). Not a big issue.
I'm finally able to set a silent alarm! Previous firmwares allowed setting the alarm sound to 'None' in the list but always defaulted back to the last set sound anyway. This is now fixed.
Setting the alarm time now entails spinning dials instead of clicking. Faster but less precise.
Various UI text is now smaller and sharper.
Additional bloatware, of which some can be uninstalled without root.
'Connected Devices', a more intuitive and cleaner version of the DLNA media server software.
The address book looks a bit different, I think. Unfortunately it's still impossible to change the sorting order of contacts.
The photo album offers a few more options when you call up the menu.
Digital zoom available at all camera resolutions. Only for images though, not video.
Compression levels of still pictures remain overly high.
xLOUD option to significantly enhance audio output strength from the rear speaker. Almost painfully loud IMO.
Using the HDMI mirroring feature now forces the home screen into landscape mode for a better fit with widescreen TVs.
There is also the Keyboard option for International (full keyboard or Phonepad !)
Minor updates:
Video Editor
Data Monitor
Contact Widget
Timescale extension search
Friends & Music
Setup screen has been changed
Nice Update Center
Etc.
They introduced
New weather widget
New layouts for background theme management
New Xloud benefits
Etc
Enjoy!

The wifi does have a weird issue when you first boot it from flash. you have to restart it again it will work correctly. I am not sure if you meant if arc "can" disconnect itself from wifi. i currently tried to disable it and turn it back on it works well. perhaps could you explain it again? sry my english is bad haha

Thats great! Well, I am not sure really, but if you have root explorer installed you can access your system folder.
Perhaps someone else could help us!?

Well.. since its not rooted I don't have root explorer.
I thought some adb pull command can extract the widgets?
Perhaps you can ask DoomLord.. he usually knows such stuff

Hmmmm. It would be really great if someone could extract the new apps and widgets for us, because i dont want to loose my root.
Thank you all

i kwow thats y im shocked that im getting an update!!!! =s
what build number is the update that you just got?
Weird, finished the update an I'm still on base band 016 and build .016 Wtf

LOL nice
damn i got excited there for a moment
fw 1.6
bband1.0.16
kernel 2.6.29-rel
build r1fa016 if that helps anyone.....prob not
bhah, in belgium we still don't get the .16 firmware
hope well have it soon!
does the update delete any data or smthg?
do u need to backup the phone?
im sure theres better information elsewhere but from the top of my head i think images are lil more sharper, timescape/mediascape have improved a little.. like the buttons react better although cant really speak about timescape seen as i dont use it. i think the keyboard actz more appropriately.. like the 'a' and 'l' button work better now! im sure there was something else but i think i just forgoten lol
as for when your upgrading you lose everything.. id suggest something like mybackup which backups quite a lot of things and then copying your phone contents from usb to pc so that once you upgrade just copy any neccessary files you want back to your phone and then later install mybackup and you should be able to get most your things back to normal.
just for the record ive noticed with mybackup aswel as some others, once you restore apps aparently when you visit the market it doesnt show up in the 'downloads' section. besides that i think there might be just 1 or 2 minor issues like some of the widgets not showing up on screen or something!
hope it helpz!!
i want to update too, it didn't want to update!!!! 014 still. Canada

Xperia play update 4.0.a.2.368

So i just updated my phone to 4.0.a.2.368 and i noticed a lot of really nice changes. Since there aren't any official notes (or at least not ones i can find) i will be posting changes i noticed here along with personal opinion on some of them without a particular order...
xLOUD-The soundspeaker loudness is greatly increased and the sound is so much better.
Media Player-When you play a song the backround of the player changes to a color most noticable in the album art
-looks great
Infinity Button Upgraded-You can now search for artist on wikipedia, lyrics on google and karaoke videos on youtube.
-Finally the button is useful
Lock Animation-It is changed to an old-style tv turn off
-It looks great and kinda gives nostalgia
App Refresh on Reboot-Before i updated my phone every time i rebooted it I had to let it ''sit'' for 5 minutes so it loads all the apps from the sd card and if you opened the menu you would have to reboot it again...but now it shows an icon on every non-loaded app that quickly refreshes to give the real app
-yes yes yes my brother always said its the worst thing about this phone so now i can rub it in his face
Themes-Basically like wallpaper but changes the background of some apps like Messaging
Messaging-Now it opens up so much faster and has a different boot animation
Call handling-You can now manage what calls you receive and block
-I was always wondering why wasn't this already included,i mean all my older phones have it
Timescape-Doesn't freeze when you move the widget and scrolls a lot smoother,in addition Extension Manager has been added so you can get more content to Timescape from more sites and you can also see calls and messages.
Wireless Radio-It seems like its power is increased and you don't get disconnected from older routers altho i haven't been able to test this longer than 30 minutes.
Status switch Widget-The old 4x1 has been replaced with a new 3x2 one
-It looks ugly and it messed up my perfect widget arrangement
Weather widget-Pretty self explanatory
-Now i can delete space-consuming Weatherbug
Favorites and Recent Calls Widget-Also self explanatory
-Its huge but i guess it is useful and at least looks nice
Be sure to add stuff you notice and i will update more stuff tomorow
Be sure to say thanks...as you can see I'm a noob and a pioneer from my country
Already a thread about it. ;-)

Well it is sort of better but you don't get disconnected when the signal gets under 20% and i have noticed i can play zinga poker now where in the last update it would disconnect me from wifi as soon as i started playing, but now it runs great
I got the update via OTA today (Philippines) and I still have root. Rooted using Gingerbreak 1.20.
OTA for UK now also
preys this fix the ****ty wifi issues *finger crossed*
Bad news for me, the OTA udpate fails on the fourth dot.
Does this mean I deleted an app that it checks to see if you are on stadard build>? Do I have to go back to Uk Generic and root then ota?
thank in advance
Update is available to R800a users. I'm running Generic usa I think.

Try it one more time. But did you delete a stock app? I just froze all of mine and the update was fine.

My fails to update as well should I unroot first then update?
@nelly_boy & Xplay. If you have uninstalled anything from your phone after rooting. The ota update will fail.
As you have said nelly_boy you will have to reflash to 2.3.2 to get the stuff you deleted back then root then do the ota to get 4.0.a rooted.
@Xplay. You dont have to unroot to ota update. The whole point of updating using ota is to keep root.

TouchWiz 4.0 app icons and folders problem (video included)

Hi,
I don't know if someone else found this problem. I made a video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=RS9j4uiTDaE. It's also in FullHD.
And wrote a post in my blog in my native language, spanish: http://retreteinformatico.blogspot.com/2012/01/touchwiz-40-y-problemas-con-la.html
The video description is english. I'll also explain the problem here:
Simply put, TouchWiz does not save the icons in the place where I leave them. At first I organized all of them in two screens: one with folders and the other with most frequently used icons. After doing a power on-off cycle the icons are all scattered without alphabetical order in three screens instead of two. The folders maintain their ordering and screen. An icon (AllShare) is put between two folders and the other icons are divided in two screens, disordered, not alphabetical.
In the video you'll see first what I found after the icon position screwing. Then I get three or four apps out of their folder (Google Talk, Gmail, Maps, Market) and put them with the rest of the icons and the AllShare app is put with the rest, out of the screen with the folders. Then I power off the phone and turn it on again to find that GTalk, Maps, Market and AllShare are out of their place.
After that, I put the icons more or less where I want to put them (in two screens) and I do again a power cycle to show how did TouchWiz screw my icon organization.
I'm using Android 2.3.4 XWIK4 with baseband XXKI1.
If someone is able to reproduce the problem just tell it. Maybe touchwizh has problems if you put in folders the Samsung apps (Hubs and more), I don't know, but it's a big problem.
Folder/Icon rearrangement is a known problem with TouchWiz since day 1 when SGS2 got released.
Best way to get around is to use AppSorter and sort your App Drawer everytime you create a folder.
Posting problems about 2.3.4 when everyone else is on 2.3.6 = VERY SERIOUS BUSINESS!
Update your phone and test it and give feedback!
Hmmm, I didn't know. How comes that Samsung hasn't fixed this in 8 monts?
This is ludicrous.

Love the name of your blog: informatic toilet (retrete informatico) ahahah
Anyway: They suck on fixing bugs.. if we users and devs cant fix'em we are screwed lol
Also, why any reviewer spoted this problem? Add to this the Fujitsu camera module problem and you get the idea that QA on Samsung is really poor. Just remember the GPS problem on Samsung Galaxy S1.

I read your first post about upgrading to 2.3.6. Well, if I just use the default Samsung support, I'm stuck to 2.3.4, as my phone is Austrian version and Samsung didn't release nothing newer than 2.3.4 for those phones.
So Samsung sucks big as a company and client support.
Of course if I start to root the phone and installing custom ROMs the problem would disappear, but flashing your phone and breaking your warranty is not something the user should do for something that's supposed to work from the beginning. Different thing is if the user wants extra functionality, but this is not the case.
So, all in all, I'll wait until ICS gets released and after that if it doesn't convince me, I'll root and who know if I flash a custom ROM.
I had that trouble before where one app ended up going to the next page and kept going back there. I think simply restoring the order, going to TwLauncher in the application list and then force stopping should make it remember the order you gave it once you go back.

If I force stop TwLauncher the apps are again "out of control" :-/
I'll try to clear the cache although I'm reluctant because I'll need to recreate all folders again
I have partially solved the problem by clearing the cache of TouchWiz launcher.
Now the SIM service app keeps going back to the same place out of its folder, but I refuse to clear again the cache and organize all my apps. Maybe it's because the SIM service app is something variable. If I kill touchwiz process that app appears inside it's folder (once the cache corruption is solved), but if I turn off the phone and turn on again, the SIM app appears out of the folder.
This is crap.
Well, know what? I've installed some applications at one time, all from Samsung Apps, and after rebooting the phone all my folders are empty and the apps inside them are all spread across 6 screens instead the 2 screens I managed to sort. The apps and folders have lost the position I assigned to them.
Now I have a bunch of icons in random order and I don't want to organize again 6x8 = 48 icons plus the home screens which would turn to default state after clearing the cache of the touchwiz manager.
It's very annoying and unusable. I want to throw the phone through the window.
What I can't understand is how this bug has been happening since launch date and Samsung hasn't been able to solve it. My only hope is the ICS update and I don't have much confidence on it. Probably I'll have to flash a custom ROM and then try to get some Samsung software on it.
The free games offer is very good
PS: Well, maybe it has some explanation->Samsung's poor software development quality assurance. Camera's firmware also suffer from it.

With all due respect, and not aiming to sound rood to you, with that mentality (it should work fine out of the box and I don't care if somewhere else there's a newer version...) you shouldn't be posting on XDA because people we'll obviously tell you to upgrade to the latest version, whether it's from a different operator/country (legit) or simply a leak.
You can't expect people here to act like the only way to use the phone is by following what Samsung/your operator is dictating you. We all know and have long ago agreed that operators and manufacturers are lazy when it comes to QA, and that's why a place like XDA exists

The camera firmware bug affects to all people, doesn't matter if you have stock Android or custom ROM. So we're all in the same bag. And this is Galaxy S II General forum, so I post this here because norms allow it.
Anyways, thanks for your reading.
Actually clearing the cache helped! Ever since I updated to 2.3.6 I have had this problem but after clearing the cache it has been resolved. But initially after the update the folders did remember for a couple of days after which the problem started for me. But for now clearing the cache worked well.
Hello, did u guys already tried Menu>Save in app drawer after modifying/rearranging apps/folder?

ExistenZ Marshmallow problems and solutions

Our beloved developer @niaboc79 is getting very tired of people always asking the same questions and posting their problems in the development topic of his rom.
So I decided to make this topic in the "general" section of the forum where people can post about their problems and hopefully some solutions, in the hopes that it will help him and the people having problems at the same time.
Whenever a cause or a solution for a problem is found, I will put it in the second post, right underneath this one.
I want to make clear that I'm not an expert and cannot help much myself, I will just collect and centralize information, and I'm in no way affiliated with @niaboc79 and his work, and do absolutely not deserve any credits for his work.
Also there is no guarantee that the information I collect and post in the second post will be a solution for your problem even if it has apparently worked for other people with similar symptoms.
I invite everyone that uses his rom to share helpful information here. (please)
Firstly ; a copy of the FAQ that @niaboc79 posted himself. You should read it before asking questions.

Q: Hey, that thing doesn't work!
A: Check if there isn't an (*) at the right of setting description, that means that you must restart SystemUI.
If it is not the case, try to enable/disable option a few time and reboot or read thread to find an answer.

Recovery access problems:
-Don't update busybox
-Don't update Kernel
-Don't flash DRM fix (see FAQ)
If you haven't done one of the above, you should be able to enter recovery by pressing volume down (repeatedly) while starting up the phone.
If you did do one of the above, simply reflash the rom.
Note: since version 4.7 (or alternatively version 3.9) lag is no longer appearing in the rom. If you do witness lag on 4.7 (3.9) there is probably something that you have done that is causing it. Check and double check your apps and settings before trying other solutions in that case!
Lag problems:
-Update to rom version 4.7 (or 3.9 for the rom based on the beta firmware)
-Follow the instructions posted here on rom version prior to 4.7 (3.9)
If you still witness lag after that:
-After installing, give the rom some time to settle, it has to index all your files and the memory management still has to find out what apps (you) are running. This takes a long time (depending on your usage) so give it some days.
-Some xposed modules and Greenify are known causes. Disable that if you use them and see if the lag still persists. If it is gone, you can find the exact module/setting that is the cause by disabling just one module/setting at a time and try if the lag has gone. (this also counts for other problems by the way)
-Stamina mode makes the phone slower as it lowers processor speed etc. Turn it off and check if the lag has gone.
-Many (also popular) apps use quite a lot of system ressources even if you aren't using them. You could uninstall your apps, then reinstall them one at a time, use the phone a bit to check if the lag came back, if not install the next app, and so on until you find the app that is making your phone lag/behave weird.
-Never restore a titanium backup (or similar) when coming from a lollipop rom. There are several differences between lollipop and marshmallow so you risk to restore incompatible stuff.
-Activating blur in recents causes lag (v 3.5, should be solved with the next update of the rom) Fixed in final version
Profile picture (top right of status bar) won't remain after reboot:
-Open the contacts app and go to the first contact (that should contain info about you, and no image) and choose the picture you would like to see in stead of the blue user icon (click on the pencil and then on the image)
Now the image for the user switch in the status bar has been changed too, and it will stick after reboot.
Switch user causes a crash of the beta feedback app and doesn't work
-Remove beta feedback app
You can now switch users, although the system will crash/reboot, it does switch. (will be fixed in a future release of the rom) Fixed in final version
Reserved for later use

The second post of this topic right here...
i did try to reflash the rom after upgrading busybox, but i just cant find a way to flash zip file through pc.
is there a way to flash the rom without flashing back to stock?
Maybe this will work
But if you have problems, there is nothing better than starting from scratch and do a clean install imo

By just looking at that image, not really.
I see that you haven't used your phone much during the time of the picture, so no apps are using battery, nor your screen. That automatically makes the operating system the most consuming thing, as it is needed to keep the phone running.

Click on the app to see what is consuming (radio, processing.... ) if it is the radio, maybe you had very bad connection. If it's the process that prevents the processor going to sleep you should try to find out what is running all the time.

Actually, I take at least 7 pictures with Camera FV-5/ 7 with stock app, with screen brightness full. Used WhatsApp and Telegram too, normally these apps and screen should be on top of the list. I have no idea of what the hell I do :silly:

Well, I still have 10 more months in warranty, so no root access for me.
I've been using it for a few hours now and it seems snappier than before. No laggish animations so far.
The audio feels louder but I haven't test it yet thoroughly...
Battery life seems about the same...
Finally, the only visual difference I've noticed is the 4G icon seems bolder...

I flashed 378 a few hours ago and noticed that the volume is a bit lower, but the sound quality is better. That's alright with me, imo. Also, the mobile data icon is a lot larger and Sony moved it to the left. It's annoying for me, but I'll get used to it anyway. Device runs a lot cooler too.

So far I am glad I did it. It gives a nice fresh look. Perhaps a tad smoother, but that might just be me wanting it to be better. Too early to tell about battery, but at least it hasn't been worse. Am not a heavy game or social media user.
The change to the notification screen is great for the most part. I love that the first five tiles/toggle buttons appear right away on the first down swipe. I can rearrange so that my most often used ones show up quickly.
One annoying change however is, the Mobile data toggle button now takes two touches to perform the same thing previously. The first touch now brings up an abbreviated data usage screen, and one needs to press the on/off switch in addition. Overall, if I remember correctly, the touch count could be the same, because now that button can appear on the first down swipe. Still it is annoying. It feels like one hand gives, and the other takes away
Crossing my fingers that all continues to go well...

Hi guys,
a quick report, i've been on .378 for a week now, im getting 4 hours SOT max, using greenify and doze editor, cpus on 1248mhz nad phh superuser (makes a real difference, on SuperSU i couldn't even get 3 :S), can't find any way to get more battery, phone idle takes all the %. i really need amplify.
I'm going back to MM until we get the new xposed, otherwise the volume is still low, but i love nougat, super smooth and lag free.

My Z5c feels really stable with normal battery life (2Days), so without unusual battery drain.
I'm using Stock Kernel with TWRP and DRM Fix only. And flashed SuperSU in SystemlessMode via TWRP.

Yeah but it exists some mod when the phone is rooted so it's pretty easy to fix. Anyway, I let you post a little review after your own test ! I will put it in the first post
Thanks !!
Unfortunately when I try to create ftf file in flashtool basing on firmware downloaded by XperiFirm i get quite ambiguous error (see attachment) and I don't really know what to do about it. I already tried to download this firmware twice. Is it only me? Few days ago I created .376 ftf without an issue.
Wondering what's new on this one...
Wow, and for my country the latest version is still stuck on MM 305, didn't even get 5.11, and now there's already a second N version released. Curses...
The increment in version number is unusually small, I wonder what has changed and how critical the bug is. Will it replace 376?
downloaded and flashed, just rebooted to setup interface.
Now i just have to look up how to root it, and install twrp since i wiped the whole phone (came from xpower 5.0)
Edit: had some problems with the keyboard when entering my google account, also had to skip the fingerprint setup since it didn't register my fingerprints.
Used the customized NOBA and i have a european E5823 so the fingerprint reader should work.
2nd Edit: fingerprint reader worked when i did the setup thru the settings menu

I've replaced the phone app with a patched version of the new google dialer and it looks awesome!

AndroPlus came out with a kernel yesterday for 32.3.A.0.376 (https://kernel.andro.plus/kitakami_r2.html). Just installed .378 so haven't testet it yet.

I will upload one shortly. For reference, you are probably on an old version of FlashTool. For some reason the website doesn't always have the most up to date version, and you have to patch it by downloading and replacing the updated x10flasher.jar file separately.
FTF file (Nordic Customized): http://www.mediafire.com/file/5sa5nqn5bhffc5n/E5823_32.3.A.0.378_1298-7782_R3D.ftf
sometimes they adding updated emoji and tunes ive notice
if it really better i cant wait to the new build
i wish this phone had more then 3GB RAM ,could of made him more of future proof phone
so far the battery holding fine i have my phone for one year, the battery still like new (no % lost)

Noob question
Hi guys - noob question. Can I install an update not for my country or carrier on a non-rooted device? I am having severe Bluetooth issues with 376 and want to try 378 to see if it fixes it. However 378 is only available in Northern Europe at present and I'm on O2 UK.
Got the dreaded 'fingerprint hardware not available' back. Can that be fixed without root?
