[Q] Heimdall Flashing Tool - Galaxy 3 General

Has anyone out there already tested Heimdall with our great phone ? I have problems using Odin under Ubtuntu and no Windows version to install under Virtual Box. Because of that Heimdall would be a great way to flash ROMS with Linux OS.

Would love to hear some feedback etc.

Unfortunately Heimdall is only for the Galaxy S series of phones/tablets. Samsung's other devices still use an older version of the flashing protocol which is quite different.

Thanks for this info. I was trying to use heimdall to connect to Galax mini GT-S5570. Guess you need to highlight this better somewhere.

latest heimdall

For those who are unfamiliar with Heimdall, heimdall is similar Odin pretty much will accomplish the same function. But, there are a mac version and a Linux version.
Also, it may help some of you who have had issues with Odin not working for you. This is a good alternative.
I still prefer Odin, (probably cause what i started with) but It is worthwhile to have in your folder of tools
Here is the link
http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/
To all, the Heimdall site is a bit confusing, There is no need to login in order to download, there are several 1.1.1 links on the Heimdall product page/website, you will have to look around a bit.
Here is a fix for some who have compatibility issues on mac, it is a boot loader and can be found here for those who need :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=941524
For those who have front-end crash issues or alike here is a fix script link for that as well:

Thanks, have also only used odin, like you probably because it's where I'm comfortable, but I'm going to give this a try.
Thank you for the heads up, I will try this later today.
This version had been out for months.

Yeah it is funny.......
On the bullet to the right is mentioned 1.1.1 is available. Clicking on it says that "unless you have a Galaxy tab there is now need to update"
But nowhere is there a link to 1.1.1, only to 1.1.0 ???????
Weird!
EDIT: Login to the website, then you can download 1.1.1

There is no need to login in order to download, there are several 1.1.1 links on the Heimdall product page. You must have skipped to the bottom of the page and been looking in the "Old Releases" section. Admittedly it's not particularly well set out.
Thanks, I'll give it a try, if not I'll just wait for 1.1.2. I have odin on my wife's laptop, but it would be nice to be able to do all my flashing from my iMac.
To all I have updated the op and it now provides some additional clarity to help those who may need the additional fixes/patches
Anyone have this working in Ubuntu. I installed both the package and the user interface. but can't find them.
Wyf is snow lepoard? Must be some crappy mac thing lol

Hey bro
I don't think there is a Linux version for Odin unfortunately I have looked myself and haven't found one. I came across an article here (4 paragraphs down it mentions it aint compatible with Linux but not sure on the academic legitimacy of the article.) I guess not at this stage. You could always use it in a virtual environment like VirtualBox using Windows.
Heimdall. I don't know if works with Y

Geez, I thought Android is based on linux kernel? xD
Tried to emulate Odin via Wine?
ya i'm try with wine not working its not detect post ........ may be some driver issue
I found an interesting thread Here
So it looks like the answer is no, doesn't work on Linux
But it looks like it does work with VirtualBox
Maybe you don't understand me.. I flash my I9100 in linux with Heimdall, but I don't know if Heimdall works with Galaxy Y.

Hey friend
I did understand you but the OP was asking specifically about Odin. I have thought about Heimdall as well but it does not work as far as I know for Galaxy Y. Check this out.
Odin only works in VM i think.
I see, because i want to switch to Linux completely. Just adjusting, but it seems important apps like this one still don't have a linux version.
I've switched to linux recently. I'll see if I can run Odin on my end with Mint 12.

My first post here turn out to be an answer... LOL
Anyway, yes, you can use Odin in VirtualBox to flash (not the OSE version). One thing that you must do before it works is to uncheck UHCI USB controller in virtual box as shown in the attached picture (that is true for many other USB devices as well, it should have been turned of by default i VB i think).
Yesterday, I resurrected a bricked Galaxy S 4G on 12.04x64 -> VirtualBox -> Windows XP -> Odin3-v1.85.
Good luck!

Hahaha, ok, maybe she was there and saw us loose =)
I use Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 (though I know it works on 32 bit as well)
As for VB, see attachment. Note that you must NOT use the OSE version, that will not work. Also, as per previous screenshot i posted, make sure that you add your phone in VB USB settings, and disable "USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller".
Oh, and one more thing; you must add your user to the group "vboxusers", with
Code:
sudo usermod -aG vboxusers <your username>
after that, logout and login again

native ubuntu for tab 7.7

any idea how can i install ubuntu on tab 7.7 natively
What do you mean by "native"? You could try and chroot and then install Ubuntu. This might work, but i have never tried it.

maybe there is some hope in this? (Xda won't let me post links but just google search "ubuntu phone") Ubuntu are releasing a mobile version of their operating system that runs natively on phones. So far they are only developing on the galaxy nexus but there is more to come
There are installers for Debian and Ubuntu in the app store. They run in a chroot environment.
I have tried chrooting... It wasn't that useful...
And that ubuntu phone thing isnt released yet...

the Ubuntu OS has two parts.
platform : not depending on target.
Linux Kernel: depend on target (chipset machine and drivers and HAL )(same as android)
in fact we can use locerra kernel to build Ubuntu rom images when it's released.
but generic kernel that's for pc won't work at all, this an embedded device not generic pc.

Is nexus player Multirom compatible?

would be kinda neat running other roms and maybe ubuntu

The LolliRock ROM works great, had it for over a week now. You do need a mouse, and a USB hub allows you to connect other things like an external hard drive and usb sticks.
I think the OP is asking for a multirom solution, not for alternative ROM to flash on the NP ...
I think it is technically possible, but the poor 8GB is a big limit in creating a usable multirom solution ...
That app I suggested is a multirom app. It installs a Linux distro to an SD card.

Question Since the hardware seems open what OS would you run?

I have been thinking about it more and more and was curious if there was anyone planning on porting android to the steam deck.
Why? If that's what you want get an odin
Why not just install Android x86 on it?

An odin is nowhere near as powerful even at 9 w a loki is tempting but it wont be out for 6 more months
SteamOS on internal drive and Win11 on microSD.

exactly
no need for porting, this device supports ACPI
bringing over some of its linux drivers to android x86 should be pretty simple as i believe its supported in mainline (amdgpu driver)
