Question Since the hardware seems open what OS would you run? - Valve Steam Deck

I have been thinking about it more and more and was curious if there was anyone planning on porting android to the steam deck.

Why? If that's what you want get an odin

Why not just install Android x86 on it?

An odin is nowhere near as powerful even at 9 w a loki is tempting but it wont be out for 6 more months

SteamOS on internal drive and Win11 on microSD.

exactly
no need for porting, this device supports ACPI
bringing over some of its linux drivers to android x86 should be pretty simple as i believe its supported in mainline (amdgpu driver)

native ubuntu for tab 7.7

any idea how can i install ubuntu on tab 7.7 natively
What do you mean by "native"? You could try and chroot and then install Ubuntu. This might work, but i have never tried it.

maybe there is some hope in this? (Xda won't let me post links but just google search "ubuntu phone") Ubuntu are releasing a mobile version of their operating system that runs natively on phones. So far they are only developing on the galaxy nexus but there is more to come
There are installers for Debian and Ubuntu in the app store. They run in a chroot environment.
I have tried chrooting... It wasn't that useful...
And that ubuntu phone thing isnt released yet...

the Ubuntu OS has two parts.
platform : not depending on target.
Linux Kernel: depend on target (chipset machine and drivers and HAL )(same as android)
in fact we can use locerra kernel to build Ubuntu rom images when it's released.
but generic kernel that's for pc won't work at all, this an embedded device not generic pc.

WP8 9900 Build dump (x86)

Hi,
This is (as far as I know) the first dump of wp8. It's based on the 9900 (emulator) build and is meant for cooking roms (for WP7/8 devices)
It has all 51 languages and all 3 screen resolutions
Good luck devs,
Download link:
http://htcfanboys.com/download/sianto1997/?action=view&file=14516
If you use this in a rom, please mention me.
greetz
WOW!Thank you very much!
Do you know that emulator have x86 version of WP8? It's impossible to use it. So your dump is really useless, even more than me.
Shhh... It's easy to dump the emulator, just mount VHD.

Offline ISO weights 1.6GiB. But it's much faster to download using torrent than downloading from unknown hosting.
Sorry but in the future is possible to have a WP8 Rom on a WP 7/7.8 device?

Yes and no. As it's possable to run on the hardware (all 1st gen are the same CPU wise and 2nd gen are pretty close still) and even Microsoft said so, there are no drivers designed for it. Nevermind the OS is designed for a dual core CPU, so performance could be a big hit.
The HD2 was the ONLY Windows Mobile device to get WP7 and the only reason why that is was because Microsoft used the HD2 in testing WP7 and someone "leaked" the drivers needed. If things follow suit, the chances of getting a WP8 rom running on a WP7.5 device might be like finding that needle in a haystack...might happen but, I would not hold my breath.
I also would love to see it tho.....

Alternative OS

Hi guys,
which alternative os could be installed on the Nexus 7 (2013)?
Actually i would be glad to install Ubuntu on my device, but thats not possible because of a different cpu architecture...
So i ask you for a list of possible operating systems which not based on android like cyanogon...
Why? Just want to free from google and test it...

Actually you can install lots of different versions of linux on your Nexus 7, including Ubuntu and Backtrack. Check this app. The Nexus 7 is on the supported list.

Actually cyanogenMod is just a customized version of Android, it's not a different OS. So i take that what you meant is installing a different ROM on your Nexus 7. Anyway you should start from here
This app seems to be an emulator for different linux distros, don't?
I would prefer a full flash and boot right into linux e.g ubuntu...

He was just trying to help you. May be you should use search in the forums or use google. I typed linux on nexus 7 and found tons of results. Also there is a thread for Firefox OS in the Development forums. You would be much safer doing the linux inside android from the play store.

Okay - I will give it a try. But I realy can't imagine it's fast and stable enough for continuous running (what I am looking for)...
Firefox os sounds greate too! Thanks for the hint!
The complete Linux installer says it only works on certain supported kernels. I'm no expert, so is the stock kernel supported? I'd like to try Ubuntu on my rooted stock Nexus 7 2013. (32G)
Scroll down some and you would of found this.

Would Ubuntu Touch work properly on a Xiaomi Mi8?

I'd like to replace my smartphone's Android with Linux.
Would Ubuntu Touch work properly on a Xiaomi Mi8?
I'd like to have Linux running natively to run some engineering x86 programs.
dont think you will be able to install on your device, as the supported devices are listed here:
https://devices.ubuntu-touch.io
Ubuntu Touch is for ARM-architecture

I run Linux Deploy on my Nexus 7. But like I said, Xiaomi Mi8 is not officially supported. Ubuntu touch would have t be compiled for this hardware.

Does it work well on your Nexus 7?
Do you still have android and use both or did you completely replaced the O.S with Linux?

Hi yes it runs nicely. Of course that depends on what you are going to run. For most of my needs ubuntu touch does the job so i dont really need to emulate x86 on my tablet. As for the dual boot I previously had both as dual boot but now I only have ubunntu touch runnning solo.
