Maybe goodbye... - Droid Incredible General

I just had the 5 vibe green light bug. Tried battery pull. No dice. I have hboot, so I'm trying a PB31IMG.zip to see if that helps, but if not, I'll see you on the inc2. My upgrade is on 8/19. Crossing fingers.

Yep, it's dead. I did the PB31IMG.zip and same problem. Any advice would be awesome.
I have a crappy flip phone for 20 days. Thanks to incubus26jc, JoelZ9614, newtoroot, wildstang, wdfowty, and the CM team for being the most awesome devs anyone could hope for. My Inc2 will probably be 2.3 already whenever I get it, so I won't have root. Even if it came with 2.2, I wouldn't root it. I'm not gonna let another phone die. Thanks again for an awesome few months. Agalychnis out.

Oh man. I'm sorry to hear your Inc died, bro. The 5 vibe is a nasty sucker. Have fun with your new toy when you get it though.

No problem just follow the steps wouldnt want to lose an awesome user like you

It's 1:30 am and I don't wanna screw anything up. I'll try tomorrow. If you're on gtalk tomorrow, when I am, that will help greatly. Thanks again. Night.

I can't figure this out at all. I see no fastboot tool, and I have never used adb. I'm pretty much screwed. I'm on a mac. I really need a step by step. That guide is not clear at all.

Probably getting a new phone today. Most likely droid 3 or inc2.

Just wait until the SGS2 comes out, don't settle for one of those.

1. Download the android-sdk and install it to the root of your hard drive
2. go into androidsdk/android-sdk/ and find platform tools and open it as a command window
3. run the adb commands (in the command window) to fix sdcard
4. now that your sdcard is working put the to files on your sdcard to fix the usb
5.Use temporary root if you lost root and run the adb commands to fix usb
6.and then just root with unrevoked....

I tried that Joel. It didnt work. Thanks anyway. Think mine was just dead. Already upgraded to the inc2 and loving it. I have NO regrets. Thanks for being so awesome. I won't root this but I'll stick around XDA. And to whoever said to wait for GS2, I like HTC better. Thanks again!

Tried it again and still won't work. Command windows aren't working, droid won't listen to any commands I do get to go through. I'm assuming it's dead. Anyway, I have a week away at camp tomorrow, so that was the rush to get the new phone. I LOVE it! When I get back, I'll keep trying. Like I said, I won't be rooting my Inc2 even if I can, but I'm not leaving XDA. If I magically save my phone, I'll keep it, but won't reactivate it, just keep it as a multimedia/crackromflashing device. Thanks again, dude.

alright probably its because mac works differently than windows

Yeah. Do you have any plans to move to a different phone?

yea im thinking about getting evo 3d [for a dev phone without service or anything since i already cooked and released a stable rom for them] but like a phone to use [ill dev for it to lol] im thinking about getting a thunderbolt or inc2 [i dont like either of them a lot but theyre the only ones avaliable so ill have to settle but i dont like them because its really going to be hell making custom roms for them because of their world capabilites and 4glte] so id just like a simple good htc phone with 3g from htc lol

If anybody wants to buy me a new phone that would be sweet, lol
Would for sure love to get ahold of a TB or INC2.

She's up and running.

Ok so I've had my hero for a while and I saw all these things about rooting and flashing roms so I decided I'd do it. I used unlockr's amazing videos to root and flash RA heroc 1.2.3. I think this is an old recovery but i'm not sure. I want to flash back to stock and unroot it. I have seen some stuff about RUU(whatever that is) but for the life of me I can't figure out how to do it. From what I've read around here there are alot of smart people working on this and I'm sure someone knows how to do it. To be honest I don't even remember how I rooted it or did it right without messing everything up. Any help with this is much appreciated. Or at least point me in the right direction.

Because he realizes he's in over his head and isn't comfortable. Seems valid to me.
Riggs is half right. I'm in way too deep and the things I see ya'll doin, I don't really need a $500 paper weight. I don't even know what Rom I'm running now. Under phone info it says gumbo 1.5c. I tried to use damagecontrol's but it stuck on the HTC screen several times and that kind of stuff scares me.

The first time you install a rom it usually takes awhile at first boot(5-10 mins). And if it says "gumbo 1.5c" under phone info then you're running........Gumbo 1.5c. ;x

I understand what you're saying but it's pretty hard to brick these phones. If you flashed a GSM radio yeah. I've read about some crazy issues but the devs and community always work it out. Pretty much though just follow the guides and you're golden.
Props to all of you. I appreciate the work and never get tired of trying new ROMs and themes. I've had this phone for 6 months and I spend enough time with it that my wife hates it!

When you flashed damagecontrop did you wipe data and dalvik. With most Roms you need to wipe these otherwise you will be stuck in a hour loop. When iI firstvrooted I hag no clue about any of this stuff and I now no more than I thought I would. Basically, I have turned my phone into a hobby. If you are worried about anything, just leave your phone as is and wait till the 2.1 release and use that ruu.

1 click root for Evo and Hero?

Ok THIS is cool (if it works)
http://www.unrevoked.com/
The code from it is what Regaw used in his thread on how to root 2.1. I just downloaded and it is an apk. I'm still rooted from 1.5 but it appears you can download from your phone and run the app and then you have root.

i dont know if it works for hero users, but ive read quite a few success stories over at the evo forums.
I had a sneaking suspicion that the key to rooting the Hero was going to be tied to the Evo. The Evo gets rooted soon after Google I/O and they held the code back to get it done until evo release day, which makes sense. I'm quite happy with how things are looking. When I eventually scrape the pennies together to get the Evo I'll be able to root it easily.
That's going to be a lot of pennies. I told one of the guys from work I was getting the Evo and he was like "son of a b!tch" I can't afford one right now, but the look on his face was funny.

I can get one at new subscriber rates in 11 months. I'm hoping that in 6 months the Evo is old and busted and there will people dumping it for brand new hotness. What I'd really like is an Evo specced phone without 4G or it's upcharge.

Plus 1 on that! I'm not unhappy with my Hero though. I AM sort of regretting getting the Hero, because now I want the cool new phones! Actually, I'll blame it on the Instinct and being on the everything family plan, which give me premier account status, where I get the full upgrade every year...

Maybe Regaw will chime in on this and tell us what's going on with it, and if someone just took his work and turned it into an app.
Confirmed
I confirm this 1 click root does work on the Hero. Love this method. Great work from the developers.

I too did this, but now my Hero won't update the weather and I can't access the market...something about a data connection error.
Anyone else experiencing this?
oops, make that "a network error has occurred"
unrEVOked is a one-click-root tool by mmastrac who also got a lot of help from the likes of toastcfh, maejrep, and some other guys.
The exploit behind the tool is the exact same one used in Regawmod's root for 2.1, just the boot.img was patched to play nicely with our phones.
Then again, I don't see why this is in the development section.
so.. lol im not to new to this but is this flashing a recovery? or just gaining root and adding su ect ect.
well i will find out in a min either way lol
edit:
worked perfectly, no problems here.
Is there any chance this has messed with my Hero? I can't get online and weather won't display or connect. I have done multiple soft resets. Is there something I am forgetting to do? I downloaded and ran the unrevoked apk.
try loading a custom rom.
or call customer service, Sprint shut off my data for now reason last week and couldnt tell me how it happend.
does the phone make calls? sms? mms?
Well, I did another soft reset, but this time pulled the battery and waited several minutes. The network access came back, weather started working again, etc. So then I downloaded/installed wireless tether and started to play with that but then the network access went down again. I can't figure out if its Sprint getting screwy or this phone

On the truck for delivery right now. I'll be rooting as soon as I get home to grab it, then running a restore of my apps through TiBu.
I want to, but this is my first Android phone and I'm new to all this. The tutorial doesn't back up before the whole process, so I'm wary.
How do I run a backup before proceeding with the breifmobile tutorial?
hopefully my store receives it in its shipment today

You can't, because you need root to backup.
But seriously, rooting is not dangerous at all. All it does is pushes a root exploit to your phone, runs it, then once it has temp root, it pushes su and installs superuser.

Mine should get here within the next couple of hours. (not really mine, its for my GF, to replace her N1)
I'll be rooting and installing ADW after its charged.
Mines on the truck out for delivery as well.
I'm sure I will root after some more reading. This is my first android and I look forward to tweaking it to the max as I have done with my winmo devices in the past. Root access seems to be right up my alley but I'm always kind timid when it comes to possibly voiding the waranty on my shiny new gadget.
Thanks designgears for your part in rooting this device. I'm very happy to see this information already available for when I am ready to take that step.
Well, as i live in the UK, i won't be able to report anything soon. Might consider getting it from America and hoping to God someone finds a way to unlock it. Expensive but might be worth it. I want one. Sucks
On the truck for delivery. I'll root tonight and commence playing.

Thanks for this simplified explanation. Makes me think more and more that I will be rooting sooner rather than later.
I hear that it is easy to unroot for warranty purposes. Is that true?
Mine should be here soon! I am so excited. can wait to root it, first thing! then maybe I will you know, in stall my SIM and maybe use it as a phone, but hacking comes first. Glad to have DG here and in support of this phone, makes me a little happier with it.
Mine is on truck for delivery to my local store. Will post here once I get it. Been Loyal Windows mobile user for 4 years and tried may cooked up ROMs.
Should be here today too!! Ill be rooting right when I get home too so I can restore my apps too!

Kids/Wife are home so hopefully it shows up... there's a snow storm though and the delivery guys are notorious for just not delivering in the snow... they drive by the houses they're supposed to and if they're not shoveled and salted they don't even get out of the truck... just drive on by.

[Q] Am I S.O.L. or is there a way to go back to the 2.2 stock rom?

I accidentally updated to the 2.3 update from sprint, which naturally killed root and battery life of my shift, and so now I'm wondering if there is a way to ruu back to 2.2 so I can root and save some juice, or am I just S.O.L. until devs figure something else out?
This has been answered in several different threads... As of right now there is no way to return to 2.2. Until another root method is found, your pretty much stuck with what you have.

I'm in the same boat. If there isn't a solution found within a week or so, I'm going to reactivate my Palm Pre and use it until the fix is found. I NEED to have wifi tethering and the Pre was really easy to get it working on. FML

Yeah, make sure you let us know. I updated my wife's phone the other day .I want to take it back to 2.2 so I can root it if need be.

Root on 3d maybe Shift too?

Just throwin out there. Andbody think our devs maybe able to use the same exploit? Or similar exploit? I mean maybe our devs can go back and find a similar hole in our kernel?
" Nfinite and Beyond! "
Well just tried the Evo3D temp root on the wifey's Shift and got all the way to the exploit+FAIL "exploit will not work on this device". Dam! But the Dev said on Twitter that it might work on other devices with a few tweaks.
https://twitter.com/#!/agrabren
Just thought I'd post to try to add some help to those of you who ran the OTA and lost root. Thought if it worked it would give one of our Dev's here a hole to get root back on the ole Shifty!
I tried the same exploit and just received an error that this device isn't supported. Here is the thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1149998 I am not sure how it does it.. but maybe it could help?

Lol yall are playing with fire! Just wait till the devs get a exploit cus u cant unbrick your phone if u mess up the bootloader and ruu

Agreed...I'm waiting patiently. If there's no root in another week or so, I'll just reactivate my old Pre and wait it out, then switch back.
That we are , but with risk comes reward. What if it would've given us temp root? Maybe put us in the same boat as the 3d as far as it would put shift devs that much closer to a perm root method for those that took the OTA update.
Just my opinion but i see your point .

Well, for me, yes it is. The big thing for me is wifi hotspot, which you can't do on an un-rooted Shift. And honestly, I like the HP WebOS better than Android, but the lack of new apps and several other short comings pushed me over. Overall, I really like my Shift, but I need to get it rooted sooner than later or will need to go back to my Pre for a while.
