Root on 3d maybe Shift too? - EVO Shift 4G General

Just throwin out there. Andbody think our devs maybe able to use the same exploit? Or similar exploit? I mean maybe our devs can go back and find a similar hole in our kernel?
" Nfinite and Beyond! "

Well just tried the Evo3D temp root on the wifey's Shift and got all the way to the exploit+FAIL "exploit will not work on this device". Dam! But the Dev said on Twitter that it might work on other devices with a few tweaks.
https://twitter.com/#!/agrabren
Just thought I'd post to try to add some help to those of you who ran the OTA and lost root. Thought if it worked it would give one of our Dev's here a hole to get root back on the ole Shifty!

I tried the same exploit and just received an error that this device isn't supported. Here is the thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1149998 I am not sure how it does it.. but maybe it could help?

Bummer...I was hoping it might work.

Me too but I am sure it does a device check first. There may be a way but I just don't know how I really hope there is a root discovered soon..

Lol yall are playing with fire! Just wait till the devs get a exploit cus u cant unbrick your phone if u mess up the bootloader and ruu

Agreed...I'm waiting patiently. If there's no root in another week or so, I'll just reactivate my old Pre and wait it out, then switch back.

That we are , but with risk comes reward. What if it would've given us temp root? Maybe put us in the same boat as the 3d as far as it would put shift devs that much closer to a perm root method for those that took the OTA update.
Just my opinion but i see your point .

Well, for me, yes it is. The big thing for me is wifi hotspot, which you can't do on an un-rooted Shift. And honestly, I like the HP WebOS better than Android, but the lack of new apps and several other short comings pushed me over. Overall, I really like my Shift, but I need to get it rooted sooner than later or will need to go back to my Pre for a while.

Should we update to S/E 2.1 when avalible ??

Hi forum.
I think this is a good question.
I know from reading here that the dev´s are currently working on a solution for update to 2.1 or 2.2, cracked boodloaders and so on.
And that is really great that someone are dooing all that hard work for all us noob´s...
Now, IF we all decide to update to S/E´s release of android 2.1 in the end of september, what do you then think will happen ??
I can think of some possibillities:
1. We perhaps loose the ability to root for a while.
2. We perhaps cant flash our x10´s back to 1.6 and gain root and cracked bootloader.
3. The dev´s hard work is lost as the new 2.1 bootloader is crypted different.
I hope you all can understand what i´m talking about.
What do you think, is it "safe" to update to S/E 2.1 when avalible, if we still would like to be able to use costum roms and root and so on in the future ??
- perhaps someone in the dev-crew can tell us what they think...
Who knows, perhaps the S/E 2.1 update will be mutch easyer to crack or work with...
I was planning to wait till someone checked..... since you brought it up, I vote you do it.....

lol
1. Dont care less about root, root is useless for most of us because we still can't flash android 2.1 or 2.2 roms.
2. Who want to go backWARD.
3. Give me a challenge to crack it AGAIN!
IMO.

If i remember correctly you already received your X10 with 2.1. You should try it and let us know..
if it werent for root i'd still be stuck on R1 0013 since i had a prototype with no other option to upgrade
we'll see what happens, i don't think anyone can answer these questions yet
So what i am reading from all this is:
"it is better to be safe and not update, than to try 2.1 as noone has a clue what will happen..."
I use root for two things, and i don´t want to loose this.
1. To make working backups with Titanium
2. Wifi teathering. (or what it is called)
Since we are so depending on our Developers, it would be a good idea if one of them could come and help us out before it is actually out?
Biktor?
The dev's aren't just there for you to call at your disposal! They are working hard because they want to, not because you call them over to whatever next you think a good idea is!
Do you think they have unlimited time? Let them work on what they've kindly decided to work on - custom ROMs (1.6, 2.1 etc) - as in the long term we will get much more benefit out of that, than some cheap hack to implement extra features as has been suggested here.
If custom ROMs can never work then if the devs want to they will work on other features. But they are not your slaves and do not treat them as such.

I won't wait much when I see the update, but I'd be careful. I don't think they'd be updating the bootloader (not even sure if they can without emma), but they might have patched both available exploits and fota package management. And if they patch the fota package we might not be able to downgrade.
Either way we'll see, but if I were an "end user" I'd wait until it's rooted , or at least until we check how fota packages are delivered and know it can be rooted again

Our hardworking and respected devs did it ones, took 'em some time, but now they know where to look so i'm quite confident that in a few months time they will be at it again. And i'm in no hurry to get 2.2, i think i can have fun with the 2.1 for some time. I meen, already i almost spend more time looking at and fiddeling with my phone then at the world around me

It is nice to know that some of you in this forum are willing to take the change, so we within a day or so, know if it is causing problems to update the phone to S/E´s Android 2.1 version...
You people are great....
I will then wait for a few days when the update is avalible, and follow the forum to see what will happen...
i have 2 x10's so i will install 2.1 on one and test root methods once it comes out.

Let me know when you get your Atrix!

On the truck for delivery right now. I'll be rooting as soon as I get home to grab it, then running a restore of my apps through TiBu.
I want to, but this is my first Android phone and I'm new to all this. The tutorial doesn't back up before the whole process, so I'm wary.
How do I run a backup before proceeding with the breifmobile tutorial?
hopefully my store receives it in its shipment today

You can't, because you need root to backup.
But seriously, rooting is not dangerous at all. All it does is pushes a root exploit to your phone, runs it, then once it has temp root, it pushes su and installs superuser.

Mine should get here within the next couple of hours. (not really mine, its for my GF, to replace her N1)
I'll be rooting and installing ADW after its charged.
Mines on the truck out for delivery as well.
I'm sure I will root after some more reading. This is my first android and I look forward to tweaking it to the max as I have done with my winmo devices in the past. Root access seems to be right up my alley but I'm always kind timid when it comes to possibly voiding the waranty on my shiny new gadget.
Thanks designgears for your part in rooting this device. I'm very happy to see this information already available for when I am ready to take that step.
Well, as i live in the UK, i won't be able to report anything soon. Might consider getting it from America and hoping to God someone finds a way to unlock it. Expensive but might be worth it. I want one. Sucks
On the truck for delivery. I'll root tonight and commence playing.

Thanks for this simplified explanation. Makes me think more and more that I will be rooting sooner rather than later.
I hear that it is easy to unroot for warranty purposes. Is that true?
Mine should be here soon! I am so excited. can wait to root it, first thing! then maybe I will you know, in stall my SIM and maybe use it as a phone, but hacking comes first. Glad to have DG here and in support of this phone, makes me a little happier with it.
Mine is on truck for delivery to my local store. Will post here once I get it. Been Loyal Windows mobile user for 4 years and tried may cooked up ROMs.
Should be here today too!! Ill be rooting right when I get home too so I can restore my apps too!

[Q] Am I S.O.L. or is there a way to go back to the 2.2 stock rom?

I accidentally updated to the 2.3 update from sprint, which naturally killed root and battery life of my shift, and so now I'm wondering if there is a way to ruu back to 2.2 so I can root and save some juice, or am I just S.O.L. until devs figure something else out?
This has been answered in several different threads... As of right now there is no way to return to 2.2. Until another root method is found, your pretty much stuck with what you have.

I'm in the same boat. If there isn't a solution found within a week or so, I'm going to reactivate my Palm Pre and use it until the fix is found. I NEED to have wifi tethering and the Pre was really easy to get it working on. FML

Right now, there is NO new root. I guaranty you there will be people Fighting to be the first to post when it actually drops. Plus, if you read the thread, they state that it seems to be very device specific...meaning it may not help us, we don't know yet. Unless you are a dev or a tester, we are still in wait-and-see mode.
True but I suspect the same root will work on this device as well. Just surprised to see so little chatter about it

Why get the hopes up of all of the noobs that took the OTA. The smart ones that got unlucky with a warranty swap or an insurance claim that got 2.3.3 on a new/refurb phone knows where to look and when to ask about it.
I heard unrevoked has a solution. They appear to have bootloader loop issue to resolve before they can publish a solution.
Hope this is true.

True, yes it may be coming. Quote the maybe part ok let's all move on.

Maybe goodbye...

I just had the 5 vibe green light bug. Tried battery pull. No dice. I have hboot, so I'm trying a PB31IMG.zip to see if that helps, but if not, I'll see you on the inc2. My upgrade is on 8/19. Crossing fingers.
Yep, it's dead. I did the PB31IMG.zip and same problem. Any advice would be awesome.
I have a crappy flip phone for 20 days. Thanks to incubus26jc, JoelZ9614, newtoroot, wildstang, wdfowty, and the CM team for being the most awesome devs anyone could hope for. My Inc2 will probably be 2.3 already whenever I get it, so I won't have root. Even if it came with 2.2, I wouldn't root it. I'm not gonna let another phone die. Thanks again for an awesome few months. Agalychnis out.

I can't figure this out at all. I see no fastboot tool, and I have never used adb. I'm pretty much screwed. I'm on a mac. I really need a step by step. That guide is not clear at all.
Probably getting a new phone today. Most likely droid 3 or inc2.
Just wait until the SGS2 comes out, don't settle for one of those.
1. Download the android-sdk and install it to the root of your hard drive
2. go into androidsdk/android-sdk/ and find platform tools and open it as a command window
3. run the adb commands (in the command window) to fix sdcard
4. now that your sdcard is working put the to files on your sdcard to fix the usb
5.Use temporary root if you lost root and run the adb commands to fix usb
6.and then just root with unrevoked....
I tried that Joel. It didnt work. Thanks anyway. Think mine was just dead. Already upgraded to the inc2 and loving it. I have NO regrets. Thanks for being so awesome. I won't root this but I'll stick around XDA. And to whoever said to wait for GS2, I like HTC better. Thanks again!

Would for sure love to get ahold of a TB or INC2.
