[Q] Am i supposed to have 100mb+ less ram then advertised - EVO 4G General

The tech specs of the evo are set at 512mb of RAM however my phone only has a total of of 385mb of ram. Is this typical?

That doesn't take into account the OS. Which as you know is loaded into ram on boot.

How much RAM does vibrant have?

I know its supposed to have 512mb.
But the app manager program I'm using shows 326.
I'm not complaining, phone is plenty fast but I'm Rom crazy and I'm just making sure I didn't mess something up.

I believe the rest is dedicated to the software and free is 326. I could be wrong ..
I read somewhere that only Froyo can utilize 512 and up.

The current .29 kernel has a memory limitation.
Froyo comes with .32 "himem" kernel so when we get froyo you utilize all your ram
i am showing 1.16GB available for application storage.. it this the same?
ROM and RAM are different. When people speak of memory its generally referring to RAM. ROM is the storage space used for apps.
JIT and the .32 kernel would be so nice on this phone.
So does this mean we are not using all the RAM available on the phone!? That's stupid!
I agree.

Unless u run android 2.2, you will not use max 512MB ram capacity. If u installed lag fix, u can use 326MB out of 512MB. Without lagfix, u can only use 256MB out of 512MB!
There is only a bit over 300 mb app ram. The rest is graphivs ram. You won't see 512 ram in froyo because normal apps can't use the graphics memory. Laughable considering the sad shape which is gaming on android.
But hey, you got sims 3!

Question to Froyo users?

Does froyo recognize the full 512mb of ram, if so does this lend itself to better performance
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
no
it recognizes 340 something or 380 something
What's that other space used for? Why isn't it available?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
In the leaked tmo froyo there is 304 available. The rest of it I believe is used for video/graphic procesing and other core processes.

Not the whole 512 but I'm using Eugenes Unofficial TMO 2.2 Froyo and it is a good amount faster, especially browsing.

I doubt it would be a good idea to go that high.
Then 128mb?
32 to 48 is more than enough for most programs that are well made.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
I usually change it to 48mb when I dl a new rom. But to be honest, I can't tell any difference.
Why the hell would you want dalvik heap size to be 128mb, let alone 256mb? There's a reason that there aren't any options above 64mb, and that's because for right now it's completely useless.

EDIT: doesn´t work on ics roms
Any recommendations for which option to use with our DZ. I experimented a little bit used the megarom w 512 ram option and getting around 100-120 mb of free ram on a sense 3.5 nrg rom. Used to have around 70-90 mb. Although with megarom 512 its killing my homescreen at all times, so when i launch an app I have to wait for my home screen to loads every time. Playing now with the balance settings

best thing i've tried is the multitasking settings
Yeah figured the multitasking setting is the best, getting around 80-100 mb everything is smooth without swap. Question though, doesn't the desire z have 512 ram?

Dual Boot

This should really start being looked into by the devs. It would be AMAZING to have it on the Epic4G. Easier said than done. But we got some great devs and I think they can pull it off!!. Please devs. We need this!

What do you mean by dual boot?
http://epiccm.blogspot.com/2012/01/boot-el30-stock-from-sdcard.html
The temporary EL30 boot from sdcard is a method of "dual boot" which has been useful for people to update PRL and calibrate sensors. This old version is problematic in that 3G and 4G data is broken. We know how to fix it, but it would take a few hours of work and there hasn't been demand for it.
Any type of dual boot would boot from the sdcard. The slow sdcard. Not a great user experience.
LOL...I got a quad boot on my phone. If I boot right into CWM I have nandroids of 4 ROMs to choose from to restore. Takes less than 10 minutes to restore one and then there is no issue of running from a slow sd card since we don't have enough internal memory to make real dual boot work.

I know what real dual booting is....LOL. But not practical with our phones limited memory. With MTD and very limited apps it is probably possible but not practical leaving no room for any third padty apps.

Ha...been awhile since I was accused of that...lol.
Is it possible that other phone's ROMs are much smaller than ours? It can be done but would be a tight squeeze on MTD but next to impossible on BML.

Nook color has this. Although I never compared the specs. One boots off SD card, thither off internal memory. Speed off SD is same as internal. But I don't think the epic could handle this as a full time option. Just my opinion. My NC dual boots cm7 and cm9.

Where'd all that space come from? I thought we only had like 300 megs in both RAM and ROM?
Also my friends tp2 and hd2 dual booted very easily into android (infact I think the hd2 is the most developed for android phone after the g1 and nexus 1, and its not even native lololol) and ran extremely smooth (on the hd2...on the tp2 it was like a hero with a keyboard lol. Random sluggishness.)
But nah if the hd2 can handle it I know damn well our phones can handle it. The problem is, everything we can dual boot is closed source so that's why windows phones can dual boot android but not vice-versa (I mean, you could do it yourself but just can't distribute it).
Meego seems like a great choice for a dual boot though since its open source and amazing...

Whats funny is the HTC HD2 still runs ICS or can dual boot etc... and its 3 years old
I have had my head spun by this topic myself -- I've been doing a lot of searches and reading just about every result but I can't seem to find good general info on the subject. I've seen some loosely compiled info on dual booting CM9/CM7, and I've seen some info on the EL30 from sdcard mentioned before, but I had hoped to boot CM9/CleanGB as CleanGB is what I'm running stable and comfortable with now. I'd just like to be able to have stable and comfortable as a fallback for playing with ICS. I know running off the sd is supposed to be quite slow, I don't really know what to expect as to HOW slow, but the way I figured slow was an acceptable compromise for a stable fallback.
My bottom line has been that a lot of kernels seem to support this, yet it feels like there's very little info on doing it, and that just confuses me a skosh. Is CM9/CleanGB even possible due to kernel requirements?
