How much RAM does vibrant have? - Vibrant General

I know its supposed to have 512mb.
But the app manager program I'm using shows 326.
I'm not complaining, phone is plenty fast but I'm Rom crazy and I'm just making sure I didn't mess something up.

I believe the rest is dedicated to the software and free is 326. I could be wrong ..

I read somewhere that only Froyo can utilize 512 and up.

The current .29 kernel has a memory limitation.
Froyo comes with .32 "himem" kernel so when we get froyo you utilize all your ram

i am showing 1.16GB available for application storage.. it this the same?

ROM and RAM are different. When people speak of memory its generally referring to RAM. ROM is the storage space used for apps.

JIT and the .32 kernel would be so nice on this phone.

So does this mean we are not using all the RAM available on the phone!? That's stupid!

I agree.

Unless u run android 2.2, you will not use max 512MB ram capacity. If u installed lag fix, u can use 326MB out of 512MB. Without lagfix, u can only use 256MB out of 512MB!

There is only a bit over 300 mb app ram. The rest is graphivs ram. You won't see 512 ram in froyo because normal apps can't use the graphics memory. Laughable considering the sad shape which is gaming on android.
But hey, you got sims 3!

So I noticed on my task killer the most available memory I've seen was like 140. I'd have thought it would be at least double that. Can any one explain this

EDIT: hmmm nevermind... Quick System Info is reporting 245mb's of ram total?

Question to Froyo users?

Does froyo recognize the full 512mb of ram, if so does this lend itself to better performance
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
no
it recognizes 340 something or 380 something
What's that other space used for? Why isn't it available?

In the leaked tmo froyo there is 304 available. The rest of it I believe is used for video/graphic procesing and other core processes.

Not the whole 512 but I'm using Eugenes Unofficial TMO 2.2 Froyo and it is a good amount faster, especially browsing.

[Q] 4 GB internal memory

Hi,
I am going to get this phone shortly. Can someone please answer the following questions for me.
I have come to know that although the phone has 4 GB of internal memory only 1 GB is usable. Does this change when I install a custom rom (e.g. CM7). Can I then utilize all the space?
Another question. Does skype (video calling) work ok?
Thanks
The phone only has 1gb of internal memory, and when you install any rom, it uses some of that internal memory to store itself.
This says otherwise http://www.gsmarena.com/t_mobile_mytouch_4g-3520.php

It has 4 gb of internal memory, but you can't touch all but 1. You can't even see it. So as far as anyone is concerned, it has 1gb.
I'm not so sure because a Rom doesn't take up 3gbs. So the site may just have false info.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
doesn't matter how much internal storage it has, 1gb is used by the system, so it must have 1gb. whats the point of having 3gb that nothing can use. It's gotta be mis-stated specs.
I'm not always right. However, this time I'm pretty sure I am. There is only 1gb of storage for you, the system, or anything else. If you found a website that says otherwise, its wrong.

PC Mag confirms 1gb memory. Think the g2 is the one that is screwy like that with the 4gb onboard memory, but only 1 is usable.

This link will likely answer all of your questions. Basically it is 4GB in specification, but utilized in such a way as to have only 2GB available. Of that, some is used by the ROM itself for /system, /cache, etc, leaving us with about 1GB. FYI that site has a lot of useful information that applies to the Glacier even though he is specifically talking about the Vision. Very similar devices.
Also, I personally think it is a bit shady to advertise it as 4GB, when in fact it is actually 2GB. That's like advertising an engine as 300hp, when in effect it only has 150hp in your particular implementation. Just because the engine is actually capable, in some form, of putting out 300hp...lol Rough analogy, I know, but you get the point. Basically they really should advertise as 2GB.
Hi,
From what I've learned since yesterday the mytouch 4g actually has a 4 GB rom chip but only 1 GB is usable (same problem as the G2). The following link describes this in detail.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#The_Missing_2GB
The PC Magazine has 'as tested' written in front of 'internal memory' so its an observation they've made. Not official specs. Official specs for MT 4g state that it has 4 GB rom
http://www.htc.com/us/products/t-mobile-mytouch-4g#tech-specs
Regards,
Ali Kazmi
Good link Ali. Thanks. That puts the information in more layman's terms. So I think the answer to the question of whether or not it actually has 4GB is "well, it does...but it doesn't"

[Q] Am i supposed to have 100mb+ less ram then advertised

The tech specs of the evo are set at 512mb of RAM however my phone only has a total of of 385mb of ram. Is this typical?
That doesn't take into account the OS. Which as you know is loaded into ram on boot.

Android -> Jelly Bean

I was looking around and found the Google plans to release Jelly Bean (5.0) in November of this year! So my question is, will the Cyangen(Mod) developers make this available for our Epic 4g. And also what new features will it feature? There's a rumor we will have an official personal assistant in the OS.

A Leak? Google hasn't even said anything publicly about it yet and your asking for a leak? lol. ICS barely handles on our phone, are phones have 360Mb of Ram after everything said and done but ICS requires 400Mb so were sliding along. Jelly Bean unless its less aggressive but doesn't require as much RAM as ICS, we wont be able to run it. Your talking about extremely new technology and software trying to handle the latest and greatest on older tech.
Put in terms of Trying to Run Win7 (PC) with only 256Mb of Ram, and 1.2GHz Single Core Processor Never going to happen lol.
Wouldnt you have upgraded to a new phone by November anyway? Maybe not but the majority of us will and i dont cyanogenmod would support a phone that would be nearly dead by the time of jelly bean. Our phones are lucky enough to run ICS.

I have 383MB of RAM. But I agree that ICS itself should be more than enough to hold everyone over till upgrade time.

if you go into TW task manager and look at ram it should say whatever amount your using and be exactly 359Mb im on Ginger Bread so im not exactly sure ICS is the same but how could you possibly have more? lol.
But if and ever Jelly Bean were to successfully be ported to this phone then it will hold up to its name be "EPIC"! The way i see it if the Samsung galaxy 3 or 5 can have ICS and run it most likely than this phone should handle more you'd think? it would be the only phone that would say it had 5 major OS Updates haha and kept alive even when considered old Tech.
ICS was just released...why would it be leaked? I don't think that kinda stuff gets leaked anyway.

ICS is barely chugging along on our phones. You would be sacrificing serious usability if the jelly bean was ported. ICS runs smooth, most of the time, but its clear that the epic is right on the edge.

Jelly Bean and Cyanogenmod
I believe that once Jelly Bean gets dropped, if Cyanogen supports it there is a possibility we could get it. I had the original G1 running Cyanogen6 on it and that was long after the official updates stopped from Google/TMo. I mean if they can get Froyo on a device that stopped getting updates at Doughnut, I believe they can get some Jelly on a Gingerbread. This is just an opinion though. Either way I am fine with my ICS on my Epic.

If you wanna get technical that's the RAM left on the build. The device itself physically has 512MB of RAM doesn't it? The extra 36MB didn't magically appear out of thin air, it had to already physically be there to begin with.

That was my thought. Is there a place where I can see a breakdown of the full 512mb?
Reason I ask, is under menu > manage apps> All, it lists 184mb used and 493mb free, and unless my math has gone screwy, that adds to 677mb which is more than 512mb
Also, under menu > system settings> storage, under apps, it shows total of 676mb, with 180mb used.
What gives??? Is this all due to the file system conversion to MTD?

I believe it that is storage space not RAM. Our phones are supposed to have 512 mb of ram. I am not 100 percent sure where you would find that actual break down though.
edit: the 676 megabytes under storage is the data partition. This is how much space you have to store apps on your internal storage. My guess is you would have to get some kind of ram manager in order to see the actual memory allocation.

Those two parts are both listing internal storage space.
MTD conversion resized the partitions so storage has ~677MB.
Back to RAM.
There is 512MB total. On stock Epic drivers and kernel configs, ~165MB is dedicated to system space(kernel/driver/phone os) leaving ~347MB to user space (app memory).
Our cm devs have found out how to free up 36MB from the system by merging Nexus S drivers and sacrificing 1080p video playback (kinda overkill on a 800x480 screen anyway)
And tweaking some jpeg lib for another 1.9MB.
So right now we have ~384MB available in ICS.
And its still possible (AFAIK) to free up another ~32MB with the move to 3.0.x kernel (further merging with Nexus S base).
I think the 400MB(user space) requirement is for reaching the intended performance for ICS multi tasking.
I might not be 100% correct though.
