Wireless Modem or Modem Link help please

Hi all.
I want to setup my O2 Exec to use as a modem for my laptop.
I have 2 apps on the XDA, Modem Link and Wireless Modem
If I use Modem Link and change the connection to USB, when I click activate it says " Unsupported or unavailable connection. Verify that your phone supports etc etc.". I have closed Activesync on the XDA and tried clicking Activate in modem link when the PC is disconnect to the laptop and also when it is conencted. ActiveSync on laptop is set up not to use USB.
I also tried to use the Wireless Modem app, set to USB and click start, it lights up connected, but can't see how I use it from the laptop.
Can anyone offer any help?
Thanks

I didn't even search for it, it's on the first page  Did it work you for ya?
Hi. Oh!
No and yes! No, with a USB cable it didn't, Exec kept saying "you must end data call first"
Switched it to use USB and setup laptop to dial *99# on Bluetooth modem and it works. Actually, bluetooth is better then I can keep XDA in my car kit charging in car and use laptop without looking for a cable!

Yes...when plugged in via usb it utilizes the internet that is available in the pc and overrides the wi-fi. Unplug the usb cable and the wi-fi should come back on without any interaction on your part.

Does it do it no matter if I choose active-sync/file sharing/internet sharing? I guess the third option does not make much sense...

I'm a little outside of my comfort range here...but...I believe the third option, internet sharing allows the PC to use the HD2 as the internet source. This is referred to as tethering. I'll look forward to someone correcting me if I'm wrong.

Bingo, you are correct
It passes your data connection over to your PC via USB, just like the phone was a modem.
but what if you want to use the phone as the internet source from your laptop? I have wifi in my house and use hotspots when available but what if I have neither available. can I use the phone to connect my laptop to the internet?
if so HOW?
thanks

If your LT does not have a wifi card get one, a using a $30 wifi card is preferable to using a $500 phone as a wifi dongle ...[/QUOTE]
But, yes you can use your phone to access the internet on your laptop , as stated before it is called tethering , it uses the phones data connection not the phones wifi connection ...
The exception to that is , if you run the wifi router app on your phone, not plugged into usb, then you can connect your LT to your phone via wifi ...
So one more time ...
Internet Sharing over USB allows your LT to connect to your phones Data connection not its wifi , wifi will be disabled.
Internet Sharing using the Wifi Router on the phone turns the wifi into a Ad-hoc access point, so your LT can connect to your phone over wifi and use your phones data connection ..
---double post ---
my laptop does have 802.1bgn built into it. so at home, it automatically connects to my wireless router. this all works fine. I cannot afford to pay an additional $30 or whatever extra per month for a few minutes of internet access that I need from time to time from a wireless card/dongle or whatever.
if I take the LT to a hotspot (starbucks for example) once again it if fine.
if I go to a location that has neither then I would like to use the phone, either tethered or through bluetooth or wireless to get the laptop to connect to the internet throught the htc phone but I just cannot figure out how to do this.
I can connect the htc and the laptop through bluetooth or by the usb tethering but it will not connect to the internet and I cannot figure out what I need to do to get it to connect.
can you help me on this? thanks

Ok now we are getting somewhere, do you have a screen that pops up on your phone that asks you how to connect?
If not goto Settings>Connections>USB to PC , then check the bottom box "Ask me ..."
When you plug your phone into usb it should ask you if you want to use , ActiveSync, Diskdrive, or Internet Sharing, if you choose Internet sharing it should goto the data screen right after that and install the driver on the PC.
It then should connect .
So really your question should have been , "How do I share my phones data connection over USB?", or something like that .
..
It is a good idea to have the other connections on your laptop shut off, wifi , lan ...
that button has been checked but it only it says the first two active sync and disc drive but not internet connections. how do I get it to ask me that?

Well, to be honest, I only played with mine Stock for about 3 hours, so maybe someone with a stock one that has played with it more, will wade in here .....
pblocal, somewhere in your start menu, you will find an icon for "internet sharing", just run that, and make sure the two options are set to "USB" and "T-Mobile Data" (or whatever your data connection is named, it should be in the drop-down list), and then hit "connect" in the bottom left.. If you're connected via the ActiveSync option, it should then feed your 3G connection to your pc over the usb cable.
looked all over for that but could not find it.
could it be this phone does not have it? that would be LAME!
thanks for the help guys but I need more....
you can find the "Internet Sharing" app in the tools folder in the start menu.
it is in misc. settings on the phone last setting at the bottom

wow! found it, sometimes the most obvious buttons are the most difficult to see. I hooked it up and for some reason it connected automatically for me this time.
thanks everyone for all your help. I can now use my phone to get my laptop on the internet if need be, once in a blue moon!
thanks again.....
ps - this post was done while using the 3g connection from my HTC, not so slow either!

USB connection options in device

I used to get a screen on my device asking me for the type of connection required like Kies, mass storage, ask on connection etc., whenever I plug in the usb into my laptop. Now after I did a hard reset, I am not getting this option but straight away gets into Kies mode...but all that I know is that there is a place where I can set this to 'ask on connection' but I guess I forgot where to find this.
Can somebody help pls.
thanks

there you are, thanks for the quick reply. Much appreciated.

[Q] No usb option prompt via Android.

So basically. before I would plug my phone into usb and it would give me a couple of options. But now it plugs in, computer says "di dong" and the phone shows as charging.
But the phone doesn't ask for option, nor can I find a way to manually prompt it to.
help! (needed desperately for internet tethering)
had the same issue a couple of times
what i did was just unplug it again, wait a minute and plug it back in. The second time i would get the notification.
Maybe you havt to try another USB port on your PC.
Had the same problem.
Switched it off and on again. -> problem fixed
When plugging in your phone into usb, just go to settings-->Applications-->Development and check the USB debugging(uncheck and check it back it is already markeck).

If you can't mount SD Card and your pc doesn't recognise it then Your USB is bricked. There is a tutorial on the forums that will help you with that
Counterintuitively, the setting you're looking for is under Wireless and Network. Go to USB Connection and set it back to "Ask on connection."
this may be the cable error .change other one try again.
Just type in phone *#7248# and tick pda on both.
Sent from my GT-I5700 using xda premium
edit
i mean *#7284# then tick on usb on both.

This is not related to your phone, this problem is with your router/lan switch.
Locate your router/switch and restart it. Check your settings and see if you've enabled a setting which only allows one unit to use internet.
Restart everything, but cant find that setting of one unit to use Internet. Is in the protocols of IP version 6 or 4?

Reset the APN settings of the internet provider and now is working fine!!
Thanks!
