Yes...when plugged in via usb it utilizes the internet that is available in the pc and overrides the wi-fi. Unplug the usb cable and the wi-fi should come back on without any interaction on your part.

Does it do it no matter if I choose active-sync/file sharing/internet sharing? I guess the third option does not make much sense...

I'm a little outside of my comfort range here...but...I believe the third option, internet sharing allows the PC to use the HD2 as the internet source. This is referred to as tethering. I'll look forward to someone correcting me if I'm wrong.

Bingo, you are correct
It passes your data connection over to your PC via USB, just like the phone was a modem.

but what if you want to use the phone as the internet source from your laptop? I have wifi in my house and use hotspots when available but what if I have neither available. can I use the phone to connect my laptop to the internet?
if so HOW?
thanks

If your LT does not have a wifi card get one, a using a $30 wifi card is preferable to using a $500 phone as a wifi dongle ...[/QUOTE]
But, yes you can use your phone to access the internet on your laptop , as stated before it is called tethering , it uses the phones data connection not the phones wifi connection ...
The exception to that is , if you run the wifi router app on your phone, not plugged into usb, then you can connect your LT to your phone via wifi ...
So one more time ...
Internet Sharing over USB allows your LT to connect to your phones Data connection not its wifi , wifi will be disabled.
Internet Sharing using the Wifi Router on the phone turns the wifi into a Ad-hoc access point, so your LT can connect to your phone over wifi and use your phones data connection ..

---double post ---

my laptop does have 802.1bgn built into it. so at home, it automatically connects to my wireless router. this all works fine. I cannot afford to pay an additional $30 or whatever extra per month for a few minutes of internet access that I need from time to time from a wireless card/dongle or whatever.
if I take the LT to a hotspot (starbucks for example) once again it if fine.
if I go to a location that has neither then I would like to use the phone, either tethered or through bluetooth or wireless to get the laptop to connect to the internet throught the htc phone but I just cannot figure out how to do this.
I can connect the htc and the laptop through bluetooth or by the usb tethering but it will not connect to the internet and I cannot figure out what I need to do to get it to connect.
can you help me on this? thanks

Ok now we are getting somewhere, do you have a screen that pops up on your phone that asks you how to connect?
If not goto Settings>Connections>USB to PC , then check the bottom box "Ask me ..."
When you plug your phone into usb it should ask you if you want to use , ActiveSync, Diskdrive, or Internet Sharing, if you choose Internet sharing it should goto the data screen right after that and install the driver on the PC.
It then should connect .
So really your question should have been , "How do I share my phones data connection over USB?", or something like that .
..
It is a good idea to have the other connections on your laptop shut off, wifi , lan ...

that button has been checked but it only it says the first two active sync and disc drive but not internet connections. how do I get it to ask me that?

Well, to be honest, I only played with mine Stock for about 3 hours, so maybe someone with a stock one that has played with it more, will wade in here .....

pblocal, somewhere in your start menu, you will find an icon for "internet sharing", just run that, and make sure the two options are set to "USB" and "T-Mobile Data" (or whatever your data connection is named, it should be in the drop-down list), and then hit "connect" in the bottom left.. If you're connected via the ActiveSync option, it should then feed your 3G connection to your pc over the usb cable.

looked all over for that but could not find it.
could it be this phone does not have it? that would be LAME!
thanks for the help guys but I need more....

you can find the "Internet Sharing" app in the tools folder in the start menu.

it is in misc. settings on the phone last setting at the bottom

net on phone via pc

hi,
does anybody know if we can use internet from pc on the x1 via bluetooth...
i tried finding on google but in vain...can anybody help me regarding this...
ps: i am aware that we can use internet connection via usb cable...what i want to know is that can we use it via bluetooth...and whats the procedure...
thanks in advance...
so many views and no replies???
i really only think it will work the other way around. if you have 3g using the x1 as a bluetooth modem so you can get internet on your pc. unless you have a highspeed internet connection on your pc that isn't already wireless, in which case you can buy a usb wifi adapter for pretty cheap. i dunno if this was any help...
bleh. disregard most of that. i'm sleepy... i only read half. yes it is possible to use your phone as a bluetooth modem though
thanks dude...
the thing is that i hav a really fast pc connection and its cheap...whereas the phone internet service is costly...so i was just wondering if its possible...(net fron pc to phone via bluetooth)
thanks anyways...cheers
Actually there is a way.....
If you establish an bluetooth active-sync connection.
You should be able to surf the net via the bluetooth connection...
But it is still more efficient to go by wi-fi....
Stuart
awesome dude...ill check it rightaway..thanks
doesnt work...detects the serial port..but connection fails..
I know that with Palm OS PDA we used Mocha PPP, perhaps you can give it a try.
Else perhaps an adhoc connection if you want to try Wifi.
yes being connected to activesync with bluetooth give the phone the network access of the pc
been doing it since i had an old wm2003 device
or you can do this if you dont want to use activesync

Try initial the BT detection from yr PC (or the other way as I don't remember.). The "serial port" will be replaced w/ ActiceSync eventually.
It does work but it depends on your contract
The carrier company can tell if you are browsing through your phone or using internet sharing. I am on O2 and it does not have this, but if I put my T-Mobile sim card in, it works fine. PC's use higher bandwidth and this costs the mobile companies.
If you want to use it, I recommend using the USB lead as bluetooth and 3G connection will abuse your battery.
To use, press start, programs internet sharing. You can only use it if you have activesync on your pc, USB mode is activesync and your mobile provider lets you.

he want to do the opposite he want to surf using his computers internet not
letting his computer use his phone internet
so i was right the first time. all he needs is a usb wifi adapter.

something kind of like that
and you won't even have to use bluetooth after you set it up. just turn on your wifi in the comm manager

This method may not work anymore since PAN client is being removed in recent WM release. You may need to try this to get PAN client working. I posted my working experience over there w/ my Att tilt. But this method require a lot more effort to get it working compare to activesync.

i thought the bluetooth internet sharing only works one way...?
if you go to internet sharing on the phone, you choose bluetooth pan and then a connection that your phone uses to connect to the internet. that's not what he wants. someone correct me if i'm wrong and there's another way to do this bc i'm really not sure.

X1 tethering with mac

hey guys,
I tried to use usb tethering to a macbook today while I am at the airport... however unlike the blackjack2 that I have (which just work once I plug in and install the driver automatically) the x1 doesnt do anything. When I look into the internet setting I see the winmo device was connected... however as soon as I turn on internet sharing on the phone, the winmo device became disconnected
anyone have any idea what am I doing wrong?
Depends what you mean by tethering … If you mean using your X1 as a broadband modem, I've found that using the bluetooth DUN on OS X is the easiest method. If this meets your needs, (1.) establish a bluetooth pair between your macbook and X1. Then (2) on the X1 start up the internet sharing app and click connect. Your X1 should say "connected." Then (3) on your macbook open the bluetooth preference either from system preferences or the BT icon on the top bar by the clock. Select your X1 in the left sidebar. In the right-hand panel it will say 'not connected.' With your X1 selected go down to the 'perform tasks' button next to the minus sign in the bottom left-hand corner of the panel; select 'connect to network' and with any luck your status should change to connected and you should then be able to access the net on your macbook. Disconnect from either phone or macbook when finished.
I've tried to tether using USB, but haven't been successful. Don't think it works on the Mac becoz (I think) internet sharing requires ActiveSync on the PC which doesn't exist on OS X. I use MissingSync on my macbook, which hasn't got internet sharing capability. Also tried SyncMate which does share but it grabs every USB device imaginable which is sooo annoying especially when trying to connect a USB device to a Parallels VM.
Not sure why you're not using your wifi/airport connection for internet access on your phone (if you're trying to work the other way) unless of course it isn't connected to the internet.
Hope this helps.

the reason why I am not using the airport connection is becoz in US... most of the airport dont provide free internet access.... and they will charge you $10 for 24 hours...
thanks for your information btw~
good thing san diego airport wifi is free. i am about to test it this week when i fly out.
as for tethering, you might need to install the wm dun to get it to work.
or you can try enable internet sharing and see if that works.

Touch Hd 3G vodaphone uk lose of connection

Hi guys,
Been looking around all day for a fix for this. I thought it was just a setting issue so have been try all kinds of setups from what vodaphone have on their website to what i have googled and still have the issue.
I can get on to the internet after a reboot but after a while it will lose connection and i will get two arrows one left and one right on top of each other instead of the normal "G" icon. As so as this happens i lose all connection to the internet and cannot get back on unless i reboot the phone a few times then the "G" icon comes back and the internet is back up and running.
Its my only grip so far with this phone everything else is great.
Any ideas
Damo

oh my god i am such a noob, i did not know that when the usb connection is connected the interenetconnection stopped......hang is that right, should it still not connect to the internet?
Thanks

When you plug it into the PC, it will try and use the PC's internet connection.
On the PC, open activesync and go to file, connection settings.
Make sure that the option called This computer connects to is set to the internet.
Also, tick the box marked Allow wireless connections... then it should be able to connect while plugged in.
If you have vista and WMDC, these options should still be around, but as i have avoided vista like the plague, i can't tell you where they are cos i simply don't know.

Data Connection and setting Wifi preference?

Hey guys
I'm a big time noob, and the HD2 is a complete marvel for me, its my first WM device and I'm learning alot thats for sure. If there is an obvious solution, apologies in advance
I've been looking around the forums and googling for answers, but still unsure about the data connection and wifi settings in the HD2, and have spent the last few days checking the connection status/settings. Sometimes I find that the WiFi and/or Data Connection ON/OFF toggle section is greyed out in Settings, no idea why as I haven't been able to find a real reason. Could anyone please explain why this may be the case?
Ideally I'd like the WiFi to be the preferred internet access mode, but I'm not sure what my phone is using when I access online content. I can see the wireless is connected, but how can I be sure its definitely using it? I can check the notifications that I'm connected, but I'm also seeing a connection to "Contract Internet" which is normally on H with full bars.
On my previous phone a Nokia N95 8gb (nothing compared to HD2 bar the camera ) whenever I wanted to go online, I had it set to "ask" what connection to use, e.g. I had a list of connections such as Vodadafone Contract (3G/GPRS) or from a list of my defined WiFi connections.
Is there something similar somewhere in the HD2 settings that would "ask" what kind of connection to use? It would be great if someone could let me know.
Sorry to be a pest, but anyone?
Hi there. I'm not an expert myself and HD2 is my first Windows Mobile device as well. I'll try and help, because I spent some time looking for answer on that particular subject. Let's go through this point by point.
(1) You have to understand the notification icons that appear on the topbar. Download the official user manual here and look for pages 39-40. These notifications are realtime, thus more precise than the Comm Manager.
(2) Let's be clear: the word "data connections" that appear in the Comm Manager only refer to the internet connections using 2G (GPRS or EDGE) or 3G (UMTS or HPSDA), not Wifi. So it won't toggle on, even when your wifi connection is up and running.
(3) A lot applications use your internet connection (Data or Wifi), even when the phone is in sleep mode (weather updates, stocks updates etc).
(4) About the following question: I'm not sure what my phone is using when I access online content. I'll tell you the way it works on my phone. Still, you'll need aswers of other people as well. You have to consider different situations.
- If no internet connection is on (no wifi, no data) and an application need to access internet (ex: Eutomatic updates or Opera browser), then the phone will open a data connection (2G or 3G). If it doesn't succeed, you'll get an error message.
- If wifi is already on and connected, but data connection is off, the applications will use the wifi connection. Unlike data connection, the applications are not able to "force wifi connection" if it's not already connected... I don't know if there is a setting or a tweak to change this.
(5) Unfortunately, I already experienced some application that "force" the opening of data connections, even with wifi on and connected. That's why I disable every automatic updates. I only do manual updates... and it "obeys", meaning that updates use the wifi when I'm connected, and force data connection when wifi is not available. I tried some complex (freewares) softwares like WMLongLife (found here) because I wanted the data connection to disconnect automatically after an updates (manual or automatic), but they were not very handy. The latest I tried gave me the best results. It's called Bandswitch 0.3 (found here). It works great in doing just that: automatic data disconnection after idle delay you choose.
(6) Is there something similar somewhere in the HD2 settings that would "ask" what kind of connection to use? I'm not absolety sure, but you could try to reach this settings. Follow this path: Windows icon -> Start menu -> Settings -> Connections -> Connections (yes, once again) -> Go to the tab called "Advanced" -> Click on the button "select networks". Here you can find what program which network programs must automaticaly use. You'll be able to see the 2G/3G network, but I'm not sure what you should choose to enable WIFI connection... Tell me if you find!
That's it folk. Cheers.

I also noticed this, but yesterday I found an option in Activesync windows mobile device centre on my PC by accident. It says "disable data connection on phone when connected to PC"
If you untick this box you can connect to wifi and GPRS/HSDPA all whilst still connected to the PC through usb!

Because your device is automatically connected to the network your laptop/pc is currently connected to.

If your computer uses a proxy server to connect to the internet, your phone doesn't assume the same identity as your PC. At work I can't use the PCs internet connection on my phone when I connect via ActiveSync, but my phone charges and I can browse it in file explorer.
That's one reason why you'd want to do it

Internet access over USB

Hello All,
Does anyone know of a way for me to get internet/network access on my phone through usb to my pc?
This is possible on windows mobile with active sync. I want to use it like this in a couple of weeks when I go to a LAN party. I want to use an IRC chat program on my phone but won't have access to WIFI.
Whenever I search for this all I find is USB tethering to give my pc access to the phones data connection. I want it the other way around.
It's driving me nuts that I can't find such a simple feature that's been around for so long with windows mobile.
when you connect usb cable Tattoo ask you what to do, you need to choose third option: "Mobile network sharing". If you earlier set default action, go in settings>Conect to PC - here you check option "Ask me"....
all done...
That's the opposite way around. That to use the phone as a modem for the pc.
I want to use the PC's internet connection to browse on the phone.
Also don't get that option with custom froyo rom.
I could also use bluetooth PAN if could work out how to get that working.
