I've just updated my Atrix to Gingerbread and all almost all my complaints about the Atrix are now gone! There are some things that do not please me though.
Here is a quick sum up of my experience so far:
Positive
- Lag between homescreens after you wake up the phone. Before Gingerbread I've tried ALL the major launchers and there was lag with ALL of them. With Gingerbread the lag is gone! Zeam Launcher is a beauty to use.
- The agenda/calendar app is close to perfection now. Really really excellent.
- The Gallery is very good.
- The dock and the look are very cool.
Could use improvement
- The music player really needs to allow you to organize your music by folder.
Step backwards.
- The Gingerbread keyboard is great but I really cannot understand why they took a step backwards and removed a great feature. With froyo once you clicked for some seconds on a letter you would get a pop up rectangle with all options regarding this letter (the same letter with accents, etc). The rectangle would stay there until you've selected your choice. But with Gingerbread you have to keep pressing the letter and then slide your finger to the option you want to select in the rectangle. This sucks! The keyboard would be just perfect if it weren't for this.
Still the same
- I thought that Motorola would finally allow you to decide for your self how many homescreens you need instead of still forcing you to have the number of homescreens that think it's right.

menus now have white background with black text. on an lcd screen, this can increase battery consumption notably compared to the previous white text on black background.
icons seem too large for my liking

when typing with froyo, if you pressed once on an area in the text but missed your target, you could press and hold and a mini magnifying glass would pop up to help you place your text marker more easily. with gingerbread, this is replaced by just a little marker. just a minor annoyance imo.

We have white sub pixels, so doesn't that help battery consumption? That's just what I've read thoughout the forum. This is qHD, not just a regular HTC LCD
The keyboard thing is really what's beyond my comprehension. Why would they take a step backwards?! Why? I even checked the settings to see if there was a way to change this but apparently there isn't. This may not be a big deal to english speakers but for languages like portuguese that have toons of accents it was a super useful asset. I hope Motorola fixes this.
You can download different keyboards, right?

This is an lcd screen so the color has no effect on power usage at all. Only on amoled screens does black color drain less power than white. So the new color makes no difference.
i read a while ago a thread on allaboutmaemo or allaboutmeego that they tested the battery life difference between samsung galaxy s (lcd vs amoled) and they found that white backgrounds did increase battery consumption. although its not as bad of an increase when compared to amoled.
A white background will use slightly more power than a black background as all of the sub-pixels in the screen need a continuous charge to stay in the "on" position. However, I seriously doubt that the affect on power consumption would be anything other than negligible unless you are in the menus 24/7.
I do prefer a black background with white text though.

This sounds really bad! No magnifying glass anymore? That is an important feature to precisely place the cursor when you want to edit.
My problem after upgrading to the is connecting to my car's bluetooth (bluelogic). Once I turn the toggle on won't automatically connect anymore. I have to go to settings and connect it, it's says paired but not connected. Anybody knows how to fix this?

Just delete/remove it and re-pair it. Should work fine then.

Upgrade was successful on first attempt. After 5-minutes use... app icons appear to be larger - have not checked if there is a setting for that. I thought I heard that we would be able to get more icons per screen so maybe there is a setting. Contacts application appears to work differently and contact details are not as compact as previously. Weather Channel app took some time to load but I see it is up now. I like the new look of the alert bar. Anyway that's after only 5-minutes of playing around.
I got the same problem as you. Can't seem to find a fix for this.

I just got a new nexus one swapped 2 days ago from HTC under warranty. I'm running MIUI on the new nexus and I just noticed that my notification bar burned onto the screen. I had MIUI on the last nexus for about a month and nothing happened to the screen, had to get it changed for different reason.
I was thinking it was due to the fact that miui's notification bar is transparent or somehow the screen didn't turn off during the night, but then all of the other things(icon, etc.) would have burned onto the screen.
Im going to call HTC and find out what they have to say. But does anyone have any insight to this. I really dont want to leave MIUI, really like that rom.
This is going to be a risk you run with refurbed Nexus Ones. Most people run them with white notification bars. I have two Nexus Ones and even being careful I have some burn-in. I run my everyday Nexus with a black notification bar and still there is slight burn in(uneven wear). I've never personally seen a Nexus without some form of burn in(uneven wear) from the notification bar. It is the most persistent part of the UI, even when you hide it with something like LauncherPro, etc.., it will pop up when in the market, and other apps that do not have the option to hide it. etc..
I'm running mine with the stock white notification bar as I'm 100% stock. I don't see any burn in on my screen. Any ways to check with an app that makes it more visible?

try going in to the Gmail app, then go in to an email with not much text and scroll down until you have a white screen, and look at the left side of the screen(in landscape) against the white background.
that said, if you do not notice it now, I WOULD NOT GO LOOKING FOR IT...you will most likely find it and it will start bothering you.
I guess thats why gingerbread went with black notification bar.
I only notice the burn in on my N1 when I'm on Google's homepage

I'm not gonna look for it as I wont be able to forget about it.
Hopefully gingerbread shows up soon so the black notification bar wont burn into my screen.

Yeah, I noticed it using Floating Image myself, a nifty program that floats images from your camera dirs and the internet past you. Noticed the notification bar area looked odd, then looked closer and realized it was darker.
I've since started using a ROM with a dark notification bar, maybe mitigate it a bit, although I suspect the clock being in the same place all the time will burn up there too.
Too much for not looking for it. I just went on the Google homepage in landscape and I saw a tiny tiny bit of burn in like barely noticable. So I turned my brightness to Max to see if it was more visible and I couldn't see it on 100% brightness. Only when its on lowest brightness am I able to see the burn in. Good enough for me

yeah pretty much anything that is persistent is going to possibly cause an issue. I'm glad Google is going with black now. I think it looks better and is safer for our AMOLED screens. As far as I know, this is not an issue for folks with SLCD Nexus ones since LCD phosphors have a much higher half life so do not show this issue until you are pretty much ready to upgrade your device....if it ever shows. LCD tech is much further advanced in this area than AMOLED.

Just be careful of using high brightness: it will age the pixels quicker and make it even more noticeable. Best thing to do is use a launcher like Launcher pro and hide the bar as much as you can for awhile to "wipe" the worn pixels. Same with any apps that allow for hiding the notification bar in settings. That will improve it some and then you can use the black bar that will come with Gingerbread and you should be good. It wont be gone 100% but will be barely visible at that point.

I always leave my brightness on automatic and now i hid the notification bar in launcher pro. i'm set until gingerbread
My 2nd hand Nexus One has burn in of the title bar. TBH I'm not that bothered; its very unlikely I'll even still have this phone this time next year. How long do some of you folks really think you'll own this phone for? Its aged well, but in 12 months time, I reckon it'll be a pretty small percentage of people posting now who still use one of these with any regularity.
I just ignore it.
I do use a theme with a black bar now anyway.
I wonder if the SAMOLED stuff suffers this issue?

That's been my experience with HTC, they've never hassled me about anything I've wanted help with. I sure wish they were making the next Google phone.
cant we make the notification bar more transparent using some sort of theme or something ??? :S
I was wondering, on the mac if you press command+ option+ control+ F8 it inverses the screen colours.
Ie. If the screen back ground on browser is white, it will become black and the fonts become white. I use it all the time to read in the night and avoid screen glare.
But if someone could do something like this for our note, we might beable to reduce the battery consumption while browsing etc for example.
It would really use the oled properties too save battery.
Just a thought.
Ps. I use tapatalk with the black back ground, and it's easier on the eyes.
It's there such an app that can do this for any screen on our note?

There are some blackout themes for android. one in particular is black android 2.5. i used it on my gs2 and with nitr8's insanity mod i was getting 4 days batt life.
if you make sure and use as little of the display as described in the thread that neverthemore posted, your display will use very little power. thin fonts, black backgrounds where ever possible. i heard somewhere that red uses the least amount of power, but im sure that topic is very open for discussion.
either way, using a single solid color over white is a good idea since white needs all the pixels on, whereas red would only use red pixels. green uses green etc etc but since the samoled has the pen tile i believe that means 2 green sub pixels? right? somebody please correct me if i am wrong.

ChadTheWocko has a great work around for using opera mobile, but once you change it it's difficult to change back. I'd love a simple toggle widget for reversing colors.

I personally love the onscreen buttons. I disable the other ones and disable the backlight as well. I do this for the fact that my kids and I would constantly back out of things when grabbing the phone landscape. I like the fact that with the onscreen you have somewhere to grab the phone without backing out. And although not a big deal, its less stress not having to press the big button, and this I would think would help the longevity of the hardware button itself . But in the end, it's purely preference, oh and I don't worry about the burn in as I have mine set very low so its just noticeable and It moves when I open apps and when I go landscape.

That is the main reason why I enable software keys on every ICS ROM I try! When you try on-screen keys you will feel how LONG it takes to launch the recent apps panel using the long-pres on Home button! Add to that I got very used to multitask using the recent apps softkey then physical button will only hinder my speed and will wear out in a matter of couple months
I've flashed the soft keys and disabled the back lights of the hardware keys, but how do I completely disable the hardware keys so I won't press them by accident?

Point is, why even bother trying avoid a screen burn in if its inevitable.

Point is if u enable softkey , ur status bar blend in with the keys to to bottom of the screen. Where is the another static object comes from? It is still one black bar just different position.

Have to quote this again so people are aware. Amoleds are notorious for ghosting due to pixel wear out burnout whatever you want to call it. Using the ICS on screen virtual buttons will surely destroy your screen.
That's why I also autohide my notification bar on the home screens.

Burn out is avoidable provided you don't leave static images on the screen for long periods of time. With the notification bar it is always there unless you use a launcher that hides it on the home screens and apps that have the option to hide the notification bar as well.
I use opera mobile so I can browse in full screen and not worry about static notification bars. Also use launcher pro so I can hide the notification bar.

How did you disabled them??? Is there an easy way?
I like to use the softkeys simply becuase it allows me to completely disable the capacitive buttons and use my s pen to go back, home and bring up the multitasking window pane :good:

That's one of those old wives tales.
The burn-in isn't so much related to the technology as it is related to build quality.
Most of those issues are stemming from Gnex owners, and the ones with problems usually have other build quality problems too... they just were unlucky to have a bad batch that skipped QC.
I've got a friend who had the Gnex from day one, and to this day... no burn-ins!
I would normally prefer physical buttons (ftw) but I'm going to have to agree that the Note needs "soft buttons" aka on-screen Navigations.
Why?
Because it gets annoying shifting finger to stylus and back again during the daily use.
Bonus reasons:
- without it, the device looks much better (like the Gnex or N9)
- these can be customized for colour, glow, function and gestures

Yesterday I noticed a blue bar at the top of my screen. It's my statusbar which has burned into my display. If I open a complete white screen, it's clearly visible (one can even see the clock, lol).
I didn't use my phone excessively, didn't use it as a night clock or something, I just used it actively ~3 hours a day.
I'm thinking about contacting Samsung as I bought it on 2nd March 2011 - so AFAIK I should still have warranty on it. I'm now asking myself what Samsung would do - either repairing it (I don't think so) or sending me a new device? I'm a bit afraid that they will send me a i9001 since the i9000 is not manufactured anymore.
Has anybody else experienced similar problems with AMOLEDs from Samsung and can tell me something about their warranty regulations?

I have not had this problem and my sgs is 2 years old. And I doubt that you will get a new one because it is not made anyway. They will probably just repair it.

The problem is less pronounced with the sgs 1 compared to the sgs 2 but it is definitely there. The status bar displays the same stuff all of the time and it is prone to screen burn in . Try one of the amoled burn in apps on the market and see if they help your device or not. They didnt remove the problem entirely but at least I don't get this obvious blue line across the top of my screen when I watch videos or do anything else in landscape.
I've got the exact same problem . Its mostly on the top left of the screen(status bar area) and very light bluish tint throughout the status bar. Doesn't bother me too much though.
BTW I use my phone a lot.

The point is that I read a lot of scripts and books on my screen and thus the blue bar is quite annoying. What do I have to consider when I send it back to Samsung?
My idea was to flash a stock ROM from sammobile and wipe everything. Do I have to do more (e.g. downgrade Bootloader or something)?
I havent't faced any issue like this

Well, actually it's not just a trace from usage. If I cracked my display or something similar, THAT would be a usage trace. I see what I can do... Not sure though if I should really send it back since I love my i9000
Blue is known to be the worst color for screen burn in on amoled, which begs the question....why blue ics theme Samsung?

Possibly a defective unit? Under normal circumstances, in no way should this happen unless you leave the screen on at high brightness displaying the same stuff for an extended period of time.
I max out the brightness of my SGS since day 1 and I only notice burn in on the status bar. Although I admit, I have changed from Touchwiz launcher to launcher pro, adw ex, go, zeam, apex, nova, lightning, back to zeam and now Apex, so the icons on my launchers and home screens have shifted quite a bit in position thus eliminating the possibility of burn in. You do have to make sure that you do not display the same stuff for an extended period of time using OLED displays.
Has anyone noticed faint horizontal white lines running across graphic images? I've noticed this most in widgets or picture thumbnails. Tried to take a screenshot but they don't seem to get captured. Very thin lines - like just a pixel or two in width. Sometimes changing screen and coming back makes them disappear. Often if I move the screen by swiping they disappear (even with a very small movement) but then reappear as soon as I let go. Don't think I've noticed on previous smartphones; wasn't sure if this was a byproduct of the 1080p resolution.
Running stock, unrooted.

In certain lighting, I see what looks like a dot matrix all over the screen, but from what I've heard, that's normal. Not sure what exactly that is though...
I can see it the clearest when the screen is off. I think it is part of the screen tech, not the resolution, but I could be wrong

I cant replicate your problem, sounds like you my friend may have bad screen. I would request a replacement at your closest vendor.
And the dot matrix on the screen is part of the screen, essentially it is part of the touch system that you love and cherish!

Unfortunately this "dot matrix" looks hideous and I've never seen it on any phone that I have on that I owned several flagship phones.

I'm sure you can if you hold them a certain way in the light, you will notice it. I know on my Bionic it is visible but can only be seen if held the right way in the light with the screen off.
htc incredible was a flagship phone and had it.

Hmm... might check on that. Got the phone at Best Buy - not sure how good they are about replacements. Problem is, the issue is kind of fleeting. What I mean is these lines are not static. Even when I see them it looks like there is a touch of flashing going on, and the slightest screen swipe makes them go away. Sometimes they stay gone and sometimes they come right back. I wish I could do a screen capture - maybe I will have to just photo edit some lines to illustrate what I see

no but really, the inc was an awesome flagship ;D
and at the time i think HTC was one of the few phones that did the dots still..i remember the moto x didn't have them. i don't even know what the point of them is
I can see them on mine, but only in certain light and at certain angles and when off. I never see them when using it.
Finally got around to taking a picture of this with a separate camera. This is the weirdest issue! I can't capture it with a screenshot. It only happens on some images, and even those sometimes the lines disappear if I rotate the display. I tried doing a factory reset but that didn't help. Doesn't seem to be a hardware issue because I don't see it anywhere else except certain images (probably like 5 - 10% of them). Not app related - I've seen this happen in many apps that have images. This attachment was done in the Play Store app, on an app preview. Also seen it on Feedly, Android Central, Gallery, etc. Can't figure out what is going on!

It is the digitizer. It is what registers your touch

I'm seeing the exact same lines after having a broken screen replaced.
me too, on my recently bought ebay G2 (VS980) - i think screen and digitizer are fine. i think it has something to do with the graphic card or rastering memory as it only happens when there is a high computational demand on display apparently? happened with two separate firmwares - one stock and one non-stock - so clearly it is not a software issue (i guess)
I'm pretty sure it's the screen. I had my screen replaced again and the issue is completely solved.
