AT&T is Painfully slow and inconsistant on my tab - Galaxy Tab General

Anyone else deal with this? I am getting great signal (same on my phone) But they data is just abhorrent. I usually hover in the sub 100kb/s area in my down speed. And that is when it chooses to bestow data on me at all.
Any ideas?

Are you getting 3G or EDGE? I'm connected through AT&T 3G at the moment and it's rather speedy. I usually clock in around 3mbps. The speed you describe is more typical of EDGE.

I can be connected to the 3g/H network and get crap speeds too. At&t is weak in my area (Southern California).

Yeah, I am getting 3g/H all of the time (never edge)
I am in NYC of all places it should be super fast.

We both live in populated areas - does the number of users on the net account for our slow speeds?

And there is what I mean...

I'm getting the same abysmal speeds on my galtab on AT&T with Overcome ROM and the JK3 modem. It bounces between H and 3G all the time.
I'm in the Seattle area, and people with iPhones get great speeds.
To top it all off, somehow AT&T somehow thinks I'm using 90% of my 250mb every month at these pitiful speeds.

I just flashed JPD and there was no change, but then I tried KM2 and now I'm getting awesome speeds.
Thanks!

JPD slight improvement.

I'm in Seattle...not sure what happened but km2 was blazing fast at first, then it slowed down.
Back to jpd, and its better, but still faster than before.
Edit: JPD did the same thing as Km2, started out fast, then slowed waaay down. I'm back on KM2 again, lets see how this handles for awhile.

My speeds are ok my service just sucks

I'm not sure what to tell you. I'm on stock ROM, stock modem, in a somewhat major city and I always pull pretty good speeds, well fast enough for streaming YouTube and Netflix.
I do know that NYC is not AT&T's best friend. People tend to have a pretty poor experience with the service there. But Seattle, no idea. Try a SIM pull, as that severs the registration with the tower and forces a fresh one which usually results in a much better connection. Failing that, I'd either blame the region (less likely) or the device (rather likely).

AT&T Download - terrible!
Having the same problem in the NYC area. Does anyone know the answer to a few questions:
Which is the best AT&T modem for voice and data on Gingerbread?
What are the correct/optimal APN Settings for this config?
Could AT&T be crippling this because I switched the SIM from a free-o "smartphone" I had to buy to get voice and data? (I have the tethered plan just so I don't get nastry-grams from them)?
Do you have to pull the SIM each time you re--flash the modem to reset the network?
I just switched to AT&T because I need telephony on the Tab (had T-mo and couldn't take the modem/switch thing).
Thanks in advance for any help.

I can't answer about the modem, but the apn setting that you'll need to use, if Broadband doesn't work, is ISP.cingular (no username or password); both are potentially available when you have a tethering plan. The wap.cingular apn cannot be programmed on the Tab when using the stock ROM.
I've used a couple SIM cards for a couple different lines aside from the SIM provided with the Tab and there has been no effect on the connection speed. In fact, I never even activated the SIM that came with it.
But at&t can see the device you're using by virtue of the fact that your SIM is inserted and connected. If they want, they can, and in some cases will, nail you for using a device that's not authorized with your line. Remember that US companies will not classify this as a smartphone as they do elsewhere in the world...it's more in the realm of the netbook, and technically warrants an according plan.

AT&T APN and Modem Settings
I am on the OC Jupiter ROM so no problem editing APN settings. I didn't activate the SIM that came with the Tab and I canceled the plan last week to be sure I wouldn't be billed.
I bought the tethering plan to be sure I wouldn't run afoul of their contract. I don't want to do anything but use the device I paid for with the features Samsung baked into it. Seems nuts that we have to go through these hoops when the folks in Europe have been enjoying fully functional devices for nearly a year now.
I re-set the APN to the default after re-flashing the JK3 modem yesterday and at it jumped up from .7 mbps to just under 3 mbps. Still not optimal (I used to get 5 mbps on TMo service/Tab, but no phone - that's another story). I now have to remember to tick the in-call volume down two notches and as I am testing again this morning the speed has fallen off some again.
Will try your apn settings and let you know if I have better luck. Thanks for the advice!

I've been rocking the KM2 modem since last week with my prepaid AT&T (APN: Broadband), and have been getting really good speeds throughout the Seattle area.
I'd say for my tab, it's a winner!

What rom are you using?
Have you used a voice and data sim with that modem? You would have to select the wap.cingular apn, and have a rom different than stock (stock won't let you use any apn other than Broadband).

On Overcome ROM
@rangercaptain - I am on the OC Jupiter ROM, and have a voice/data SIM from AT&T. Have the WAP.Cingular APN and added Broadband. That in and of itself boosted the speed to 2.5 mbps down, which is ok but not great. Was on the JK3 modem (and have to keep remembering that volume control is two ticks down). Just switched to KM2 based on @mykie242's report.
Speed tests don't go above 1.2 mbps down now, but the browser does seem to be a whole lot faster (really odd). Will use for a couple of days, then try JPD and report back.
I am in the NY Metro area if that helps. Many thanks again!

Not to pick a nit, but stock will permit you to add isp.cingular, the basic, pre-broadband tethering APN.

New SIM for HSPA+ speeds?

I've had my MT4G since release but i'm only getting between 1.5-3mbps down in downtown Pittsburgh, which supposedly has HSPA+. Do I need a new SIM card to get HSPA+ speed? I've been using my SIM i've had for a long time.

I got mine just after release too, and the rep told me I needed a "4G SIM" to get 4G speeds. However, I'm in a HSPA+ area and have never seen over 2 Mpbs down, so I'm in the same boat as you.
You should not need a new SIM. I am using the same SIM I got with my SGH-T915 (old, crappy little flip phone -- free) in 2007; my speeds are fine in my area.

What did you do with the sim that came with the phone?
Tossed it in a drawer. It's nice to have spares and not buy a new one should I ever need one .
I'm beginning to wonder if T-Mo's "4G" network is all smoke and mirrors.
I've never seen anything approaching 4G speeds on my (or my wife's or co-worker's 4G phones-MT4G and G2) phone in any area of Houston, which was one of the early 4G cities.
I was also told to use the newer SIM that came with the MT4G rather than my 3 year old SIM. Still made no difference in speeds.
Seeing an H?
If you see an H near the signal bars on the notification bar instead of a 3 your on the + network. I've never seen speeds above 3.5 in DC. Usually between 1 and 2.

Well, depends on who you ask. If you look at what network you are on (UMTS, HDSPA, HSPA or HSPA+) that is the real indicator of whether or not you are on 3G or 4G.
According to T-Mobile UMTS is actually 3G. I fluctuate between UMTS and HDSPA (or is it HSDPA?). NEVER seen HSPA or HSPA+. The only network indicators I have seen in my status bar are H, E and G, never 3g (even if I am on a 3G network).
I've been a T-Mobile customer for a long time so I had an old SIM for at least 6+ years. When I got my MT4G last month, the phone sometimes would not recognize the old SIM so I went to my local store and told them my issue, the CSR gave me a new SIM free of charge and told me that I needed a new SIM for 4G. So if you have an old SIM card, just visit a local store, they might just give you a new SIM card as they did for me....
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
If you are on the stock MySense Android software from HTC and T-Mobile, "H" means 3G or 4G, there is no differentiation.
I'm in a 4G city, but the 4G locations are spotty. In one of them, I've gotten better than 6Mbit download speed. With a six or eight year old SIM card.
I just bought this phone for my wife and have been doing speedtests in random places between this phone and my vibrant. The diff. in speed is very minimal. after numerous speed tests the mytouch 4g is about 100 to 150 kbps faster. Not enough for tmobile to be touting thier 4g network.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Changing SIM cards doesn't help. I have been using a 6 years old SIM, and switched to the new SIM that came with the phone. Absolutely no difference in speed. On the downside, it messed up all my contacts and my T-Mobile sync doen't work anymore.
You Don't need a new SIM
As long as the old SIM has proper contact and is intact you don't need a new SIM. CSR's are not technical people or engineers for that matter. They feed whatever they told from tech. support. There is not difference in SIM technology since it was first came into being since 1998.
Since GSM is a standard and the underlying technology of T-Mobile for voice communication, SIM cards sold before and now are no different. The requsite info is still in the old SIM card and used for authentication for communication, just the Radio is more advance and different (HSPA+).
Infact there are two radios inside our mobiles that allow simultaneous Voice and Data
1- GSM(which is inclusive of GPRS & EDGE) - Voice
2- 3G(UMTS - WCDMA, HSDPA, HSPA+) - Data
and they both use the same basic authentication provided in those 6+ years old SIM card provided the gold contact are still intact.
yeah im in the same boat, im have teh H sign, but I average only about 1-2m up, and 1 down
ive never gotten remotely close to some of the 3-8 down speeds ive seen people post
The highest I've gone is about 3.85m down and 1.3m up. And thats not even at home. I get maybe 1 down and even less up at the house with a new sim, so I agree it doesn't matter.

Really Sprint? This is retarded. I pay $10 extra for "premium data" and I don't even have 4G in my area, let alone worth while 3G.
But thanks for the $30 credit on my $190 bill I got slapped with this month.
US Cellular customers in the area get blazing fast 3G speeds...
I would have switched but I love my Evo Shift so much
Tried the latest radio upgrade, nothing new...
I'm smack dab in Waterloo, IA
WHY WOULD YOU LIE SPRINT?
Sorry, just venting a little bit. Anybody else near me getting the same crap 3G speeds?
I have the same problems with My phone. I believe it might be cm7. When I was sense I got about .60-.90 mbps upload. Now I can barely get passed .30 mbps upload and sometimes it shows .10mbps upload.
I also noticed on cm7 that i go into 1x a lot now. Places where I would usually get 3g I get 1x signal. It's kind of a pain.
edit: At first I thought the radio update did something, but it really didn't help.

I'm not sure if you meant 'Reset' or 'Restore' --- but, there is an issue if you update your data profile and then update PRL that will cause your data profile to get messed up.. I followed the steps in this thread, and now my 3G is perfect... Specifically - the portion dealing with restoring, having the phone reboot, letting it to handsfree activation, and then cancelling the PRL update.
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-tips-tricks/280082-major-solution-fix-your-slow-3g-speeds-evo4g.html
I was only getting a maximum of 90-100kbps before doing this..
If you want the essentials of that post:
Select Data Profile
Hit Menu
Select restore
Hit OK to reboot...
PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR PHONE
After going through the set up process (Handsfree Activation, LET IF FINISH) you will select ok
YOU HAVE TO HIT CANCEL WHEN IT STARTS LOOKING FOR A PRL UPDATE
YOU HAVE TO HIT CANCEL WHEN IT STARTS LOOKING FOR A PRL UPDATE
Wait for the phone to finish it's thing. 3g Icon should be on, go off, then come back on.
Test speeds.

I am on the straighttalk 45 per month "unlimited" and theirs is advertised unlimited but in reality they shut you off if you go over around 2 GB per month; also some undefined daily limit. Other than that GREAT to be off AT&T. Wait - I AM on AT&T network, just not paying the same as I used to.

I don't know the answer to that. I'm brand new to AT&T and haven't even finished my first month of service with them. All that I know about GoPhone and AT&T I learned here and on AC.
So far I haven't seen any throttling. That said, my data usage has been limited to the phone and a couple of tethering sessions. I don't use it as a replacement for home internet and use WiFi whenever possible so hopefully I'll stay off their radar.
A postpaid AT&T account to accomplish the same thing w/ 2GB of data (enough for me) is a good bit more expensive. As it is, I'm paying just a little more than I did on Sprint but it's easier to justify at this price than at the postpaid price and I'm not left paying for a subsidy that I didn't use.

Didn't give them an IMEI at all. In fact, they never asked for one. Heck, I didn't even have the phone with me at the time...
Data speeds are mediocre, but I'm not sure if that's because of my Note or because of AT&T's spotty coverage. (I'm getting in the range of 0.8 - 2.5 Mbps) I don't mind though, since I primarily use wi-fi. I just needed some coverage for when I'm on the go, and it does the trick.

i got a sim only from att store , paid my $50 last week. Yesterday i finally got a note and its the first tim using the sim. I can not get data to work at all. searched high and low used every apn setting i could find the closest i got was using:
wap.cingular
proxy: wireless.cingular.com
but it brings me to a page shown in attached photo."to use data services you must have a data package"
if i use any othe apn settings i get the H+ but nothing loads at all as far as web pages or anything that uses data gets a network error. I guess they have this imei in their database??
Should i backup my EFS file and delete it off the phone? Goto the store get a gophone get mobile web working again, swap sims?
very frustrating. and realistically i want to see if at&t has improved at all in NYC before paying verizon etf's and coming back (i prefer gsm).
Thanks!

Straight Talk Quality

This is more of a question about user experience. I have had some people tell me that it is a great service alternative for anyone using an unlocked cell phone, like the gsm gnex, but I have also heard a few horror stories.
One would be a friend got double charged for one month, was refused a refund, and had terrible signal quality anywhere he went. (he used an att compatible sim and he was living in the northern area of florida.)
Any one out there have similar experience in poor customer service and signal ability/quality? My plan is to cut off my contract, buy a gsm nexus and go forward with straight talk.
I was on AT&T Straight Talk and hated it. The signal was poor and data speeds are slow. If you use even a little bit of data, Straight Talk will throttle you. The max speed I would get at times is 2mbps and sometimes even as low as 800 kbps, which is ridiculous considering it's supposed to be 4G. Thus, I immediately switch out and back to T-mobile.
I've heard that T-mobile Straight Talk is much better, that people got speeds of up to 8-10 mbps, much better than AT&T's anyways >.>

I've heard stuff like that but my usage on data per month is <1.5gb if that. I mainly use it for browsing, facebook, and app downloads. Now in my area I only have the option to get the AT&T sim package. I'm planning on buying a GSM GNex and trying it out for a month. The worst that could happen is that I have an att compatible 3G+ phone and I can turn around and sell that easy if I stick with verizon.
I guess what I worry most about is call quality, signal strength, and the ability to quick access my favorite websites. If I can get that reliably from straight talk I'll switch. Does anyone think those are too high of requirements?

What about T-Mobile? The $30 plan does pretty good and it's only 10 cents a minute after the first 100.

I don't have T-mobile in my area. No signal coverage really at all. All that I could possibly get is 2g (edge) at best.

I had the AT&T sim and you're right on both counts. With the AT&T sim I could barely get 800 kbps. I switched to the T-Mo sim and I've never been below 1700 kbps. BTW, it's not 4G, it's HSPA (3.5G).

That makes me sad. Do you know of any other gsm att 3g alternatives? I am sick of paying $130 a month for 2 lines.
It really depends on where you are. Here's mine from NYC with the AT&T SIM. Also I chose the AT&T SIM because most international phones use AT&T frequencies and also because here in NYC T-Mobile only gets EDGE in a lot of places, including my campus. I work near Radio City Hall/Central Park West and yes data speeds suffer, all the way down to 300-600 kbps, but that's forgivable given the amount of people on the network. My entire building uses AT&T. But again, it depends where YOU live. AT&T tends to have better coverage in most places (they're like Verizon but GSM), while T-Mobile has faster speeds but far less coverage:

Me -- unlocked galaxy nexus on the 30 dollar t-mobile plan, my speeds in my town at work are great.. at my house in the sticks no signal in my house, but cant complain, bout the price,,
wife ( iphone 4 ) oldest daughter ( atrix 4g ) both on straight talk.. and both rock but att coverage is perfect down here so that makes sense,,
Its all bout location,,, but its better than paying out the rear on post paid contracts lol

[Q] Slow Data Day 4...Whats going on?

So I have been having super slow data issues with my nexus...WiFi works like normal but when im on H+ im getting horrible speeds.

APN setup for Solavei(Tmo)
Tried *#*#4636#*#* and did LTE/GSM/CDMA WCDMA Preferred WCDMA Auto
Tried Stock Rom
Tried CM 10.1
Solavei says its network issues but i dont think so they also said it wont be fixed until the new year...
Google says my phone might be defective but it worked perfectly for 2 weeks...
My friend who lives ~5miles away doesn't have the issue with his nexus 4 on the same network
I live in the NYC/Long Island Area - Anyone else nearby have these issues
Sorry Idk how to not resize that photo 0_o
I've had issues with T-Mobile too the last few days. I'm in Minnesota though.
Sent from my Nexus 4
No problems using T-Mobile in NYC.
Have you tried doing a speedtest at the same time at your friend's house? I'd say it's either a software or network issue with your carrier.
A baseband doesn't turn defective randomly.
Yea i done them side by side and i only have this issue..can i change or upgrade my baseband somehow. Idk what really controls the data on my phone radio...baseband...etc

It's baseband. I believe there's only one baseband available.
Mines at the moment is M9615A-CEFWMAZM-2.0.1700.33
Did you change any kernels, ROMs before you started having this problem?
What kind of SIM card do you have? How old? Have another device to try speed testing the 3G/4G data with your SIM card?

Yea I did a rom one time that asked which kernel I thought I did Franco's but it was a while ago and I dont remember. The sim is less than a month old and its a micro sim from Solavei and I do have another phone to test it out thats a great idea. Im gonna check it out on my HTC one S. Would changing the kernal get my baseband changed and how do i find out what I have currently

No. Nothing will change your baseband. Does your current baseband match the ones I said?
Reset your APN as well if you haven't already. Definitely trying it on another phone will help determine what's the culprit of the issue. Let us know and report back.

Thats my baseband too and i tried my htc one and i couldnt even get to the play store just kept saying loading i went on the browser and it was sluggish. Do you think the kernal would cause this?

It's kernel not kernal. No. Kernels controls WiFi, not 3G.
It's most likely your SIM card or indeed Solavei is having network problems. Probably SIM card if you and your friend were at the same location and you had lower speeds.

Odd. My highest speed is ~13Mbps. Cutted my regular sized SIM to a microsim.

13Mbps? I don't believe I've seen such speeds while in the Bronx or Manhattan. I'm lucky to even get near 2Mb.
So this is my plan google is gonna send me a new phone in 3-5 weeks since they think its a phone issue. My friend is also going to get me a new micro sim to make sure my sim isnt the thing thats broken as well.

I'll have to try some more test in the east side but that's sufficient until mobile gets aws lte.

I'm having this happen on SIMPLE mobile which runs off tmobile. For the 1st week it was working perfectly got speeds between 7 - 15mb download. Then all of a sudden the speeds started being 0.24mb EVERY SINGLE TIME. I've talked to these reps and they assure me that my day isn't throttled ( I've used 1gb in the first week) no one can figure I out. I am on the .33 baseband also and this seemed to happen after I switched to the latest Xylon rom. I still truly believe it's either the baseband or they're throttling my data and won't admit it. My last choice is to get a new sim card but I don't feel like arguing cause I know they'll try to charge me $10 and it's not guaranteed that that the problem. Let us know if your new sim worked normal or if you're still get getting crappy speeds. Btw I'm in CT about 40 mins from Manhattan.
I'm in NYC and my service with T-Mobile is garbage... I get less than 2g and I've called numerous times to complain.... They are now "investigating" the towers in my area.
I wish this phone would run on Verizon.
I don't care how expensive they are - they are true to their word.....lte is missed so much by me
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Nothing wrong with the tower or the phone. Those are TMO throttle speeds. Solavei can suck a nut. How data did you eat this month?
This is why so many of us are on the $30 TMO 100min 5gb 4g plan.
