Really Sprint? This is retarded. I pay $10 extra for "premium data" and I don't even have 4G in my area, let alone worth while 3G.
But thanks for the $30 credit on my $190 bill I got slapped with this month.
US Cellular customers in the area get blazing fast 3G speeds...
I would have switched but I love my Evo Shift so much
Tried the latest radio upgrade, nothing new...
I'm smack dab in Waterloo, IA
WHY WOULD YOU LIE SPRINT?
Sorry, just venting a little bit. Anybody else near me getting the same crap 3G speeds?

I have the same problems with My phone. I believe it might be cm7. When I was sense I got about .60-.90 mbps upload. Now I can barely get passed .30 mbps upload and sometimes it shows .10mbps upload.
I also noticed on cm7 that i go into 1x a lot now. Places where I would usually get 3g I get 1x signal. It's kind of a pain.
edit: At first I thought the radio update did something, but it really didn't help.
edit 2: added a new picture.

I'm running MIUI, I have already reset using 3282 in Sense. It was set to Automatic already also...

Ran into an EVO user last night and he said the same thing, his 3G is very very slow even with full bars.

me and my girl both have evo shifts and my buddy has a og evo all 3 have terrible speeds and sprint blames the phones, its their network! in im columbus ohio anyone around here got crap for service too?

I have a Shift and I'm in the Detroit area. I just tried a speed test and got 561k down and 21k up on 3G, so it's not too bad here.

Yessir...and they've been getting worse.

Just did a speed test on family mobile (T-Mobile) 3g with my nexus s. Had between 1 and no bars but still not bad. Might try switching to gsm for Waterloo. Eastern Iowa is GSM country thanks to iwireless (another T-Mobile company)

Have you tried the EPST proxy trick yet?
download MslReader from the Market to get your MSL code.
dial ##3282#
Select: Edit Mode
Enter MSL code
Select: Advance
Scroll all the way to the bottom.
Change only the last two lines.
Http Proxy Port to 0 that is a "Zero"
Http Proxy address to 0.0.0.0
Press menu and commit Modifications and exit out. Reboot phone and test the speed again.
Please post back your results.
Goodluck!

I'm not sure if you meant 'Reset' or 'Restore' --- but, there is an issue if you update your data profile and then update PRL that will cause your data profile to get messed up.. I followed the steps in this thread, and now my 3G is perfect... Specifically - the portion dealing with restoring, having the phone reboot, letting it to handsfree activation, and then cancelling the PRL update.
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-tips-tricks/280082-major-solution-fix-your-slow-3g-speeds-evo4g.html
I was only getting a maximum of 90-100kbps before doing this..
If you want the essentials of that post:
Select Data Profile
Hit Menu
Select restore
Hit OK to reboot...
PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR PHONE
After going through the set up process (Handsfree Activation, LET IF FINISH) you will select ok
YOU HAVE TO HIT CANCEL WHEN IT STARTS LOOKING FOR A PRL UPDATE
YOU HAVE TO HIT CANCEL WHEN IT STARTS LOOKING FOR A PRL UPDATE
Wait for the phone to finish it's thing. 3g Icon should be on, go off, then come back on.

I tried all the fixes and the new radio on my Shift and I've just given up. My first month with it I used over 12 gigs of data and now I can't check the weather the signal is so poor. Flashed it back to stock and its going on ebay.

Might be a cm7 bug

100kbps is still horrible 3G speeds, I stayed on sprint's ass about this and my last months bill got a 140 credit and a no charge airave, but i have had this issue for months, and mine were like yours anywhere between 50-100kbps, I told them it was breech of contract and all kinds of things and that they owed me both lines off contract etf free and they offered the airave so i stayed

My experience, wife and i both had other smartphones and both had better signals which made everything liveable. Then purchased 2 shifts signal dropped from 3-4 bars all the time to 1-2 bars and dropped calls. So called Sprint told them that this was unacceptable as my wife uses hers for bussiness and we don't have a land line.2nd day Aired an AirRave to me.We also use our wireless router when at home.

Here's another 3G test read. This one is from Atlanta. 1202 up 689 down. I'm an owner operator in the trucking business, so I test out my data as I travel the country. My 3G data started to suck like many others, for me, it started in January. 19 to 400 kbs up and or down. I bought my EVO the first day it went on sale. Never had a problem with the data speed until I went over 5 gigs of usage back in January, in which that I used around 9 plus gigs. I'm on the unlimited everything plan. This is just my opinion, I believe that Sprint is putting us on the throttle. Getting 2.4 megs up and 800 kbs down on 3G was not uncommon for me to achieve in many locations around the USA, especially in the north east. Not any more.

Don't think they are throttling us because its to big of an outage.. for everyone sake let's hope they are about to announce a update to their network!

Just got off the phone with (a very pleasant) Sprint rep re: slow 3G data.
There is -- as has been reported by others -- some wide-ranging, nationwide 3G issue, compounded by tower issues in many locations.
As I was told, in my area, there's been a tower issue since mid-February, which complicates at least a partial outage in the eastern half of the country.
Maybe Sprint is making updates/changes to their net but in the process, hosing 3G cover?
Sudden widespread "tower issues"... sounds like a convenient excuse for one of two things.
1) Throttling (there is already another debate thread on this).
2) Their network is maxed out and the influx of smartphones has killed it.
I just find it funny they are so quick to blame the "towers" instead of just being honest. I mean really is having technical issues to your hardware much better than the real reason(s)?
I agree. I think something is going on. Plus why would Sprint feel the need to hide the fact that they are throttling 3G data unless they know they are wrong for doing it? Afterall we are all paying $10 extra per month for premium unlimited data... WHICH WE ARE NOT GETTING!!!
is
207 kbps down
626 kbps up
any good? I don't think so
When one of the tech guys called me on Monday about my slow 3G speeds, I asked him if there was some sort of outage or nationwide 3G issues. He quickly and bluntly said NO.
Ive been having issues since nov and have been constantly complaining to get nothing but tower excuses to your phone is messed up. All bs. I told them either a. You have to many tower issues or b. U take to long to fix them.

Sprint better buy clearwire out...not looking good

http://phandroid.com/2011/04/14/analyst-sprint-must-buy-clearwire-or-move-on-without-them/
I agree I've had a 4g device for almost a year now with 4g not even driving distance away...I have to travel about a little over an hour, maybe a little more, to get 4g in the city, they got to do something or have a backup plan...I don't think the kyoceras working...
I though it was Sprint's plan to move on without them? I read an article a couple weeks ago that a bunch of Sprint execs had resigned from Clearwire's board. This was just before they announced (or at least rumors began) of moving to LTE.
Doesn't surprise me that Verizon will have their 4g reaching more customers in 1 year than we have now.. I love Sprint, but, they are behind at&t/verizon for a reason.
I have had an EVO since launch and only used 4g on a brief trip out of town. It now looks like I will be upgrading to another phone without ever really using 4g on my EVO. That's sad.
I guess people thought VZW was lying when they said they'd have their entire 3G network covered with LTE by 2013.
Same here. On a trip to pa I used in pa in a certain spot for about 5 minutes

Clear has been having LTE tests in AZ and the wimax equipment as I understand it will be super easy to upgrade to LTE - then sprint releases the LTE devices and BOOM LTE is everywhere that WIMax Was..

sprint always tries to bring new tech first...
but always seem to fail in the follow through.
What spectrum was that phoenix testing done on? 2400mhz??
What speeds does Wimax have when there's only 1 user on it?
That video seems very promising considering how those speeds were faster than my Uverse.

That's part of the problem - there isn't much coverage and where there is coverage, quite frankly it sucks. I live in Houston and leave 4g off because the coverage is so spotty.

I would rather have the expanded backend like T-Mobile has, where a normal 3g phone will pull down 5mbps. 21 mbps down is nice but what would I need that bandwidth on a phone. Embedded in a laptop nice, used in the middle of the country where alot of.people don't even have internet access that would be amazing

It is almost embarrassing how many people have not gotten to use their 4g on their Evo. I went to San Diego from Phoenix and I still wasn't even able to find any 4g connection. I've really enjoyed the rom experience with the Evo, but I was really looking forward to the 4g stuff.
Luckily bay area has 4g. It is amazing how just a few years ago dsl was screaming fast now my phone can blow it away.

I agree with this, in my area Sprint consistently pulls about 200-400 kbps down on 3G. A friend with VZW showed me his 3G speed test results - routinely around 1500-1700. If I had speeds like that, I wouldn't ever even want or need 4G.
I like Sprint, but man their 3G is very disappointing. During lunch hour on weekdays, I've seen it drop to nearly 50 kbps. It makes me yearn for the days of blazing fast dialup modems... :/

This is what I used to say about T-Mobile where I live in Utah. I average what your friend is getting on Verizon with Sprint's 3G network here.

It's evened out for me since launch. I would get like 480kbps at work and like 8mbps at home, and now I'm getting like 1.2mbps at work and around 6mbps at home. Elsewhere things have improved too, especially in the downtown Orlando area, where I easily pull 7mbps all the time, and more areas are getting to be like this too.

i don't know. I didn't know that there was a '3G sim card'. It was my Vibrant until i gave it to my wife. I've been with t-monglol (incorrect spelling is on purpose) for about 10 years, and it seems i've gotten a new sim card in the mail about 5 years ago. Maybe I need to have the official updated 4G sim card? I'll probably need to spend that additional $10/month for to get 4G speeds.
I guess to achieve the detailed stats on out download and upload speeds, i'll have to download an app to measure it. But, it just seems my wife and I are the sames speeds. When I download a rom (90mbs+) it takes the same time on both phones.

The closer you are to the cities, the better the signal is.

I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT MAY HAPPEN TO YOUR PHONE!!!!
all this started from this tread

I have prl's from different carriers. im going to keep the newest and old one's some times older prl's work better in some places.
thanks to Bierce22 for his hard work with this.
TO change prl you need a sense rom 2.1
Here is a Alltel rom that I have run thought the kitchen it works for the ##775#.
http://dev-host.org/s61ju0a2ae0w/Alltel-rooted-redone.zip
or you can use kyouko How to change your PRL while using CM7
here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1162091
Copy the PRL file to the root of your microSD card
Dial ##775# on the handset and enter the MSL code when prompted for password
Tap on Update PRL
If it read your microSD card correctly your PRL file should be listed in the bottom half of the screen to select
Select your PRL and click OK
Press the MENU button and tap on Commit Modifications (which will reboot the phone)
for prl's follow the link below

Voice/Data Usage Limitation: Sprint reserves the right, without notice, to limit throughput speeds, and to deny, terminate, modify, disconnect or suspend service if off-network usage in a month exceeds: (1) voice: 800 min. or a majority of minutes; or (2) data: 300 megabytes or a majority of kilobytes. Prohibited network use rules apply. See in-store materials or sprint.com/termsandconditions for specific prohibited uses
Please post your results with the prl name and where you live. prls will vary from place to place.

Glad to see all the prl's in one place. I gave been trying different prl's you and bierce have posted over the last few months. I'm currently on 01337. This prl gives me the best all around signal Dayton, Ohio. But the funny thing is where I use to get zero reception I get great reception but now all the spots I got the best reception I only get mediocre reception. So it's kind of a trade off. But i wish I could get great reception in most places and mediocre where I use to get no reception.
I'll send you a pm and see if you can cook me up something.

muahahahahahahaha sorry kyouko i couldnt resist lol.
@rb3 you have a better signal because that prl uses verizon towers by default so if sprint is poor in your area then verizon prls will work mutch better.
I understand what you're saying. But I'm getting spotty reception in areas like highways and near towers where I know friends with verizon also gets great signal which is why I'm puzzled. But the pub I always goto ill get my best speeds and I know sprint gets no reception but verizon does so it's the price I'm willing to pay to get data while drinking lol.
that prl is also ancient witch could explain it verizon could have built new towers since then try the 52299 one i fly of that one its a hit and miss with them though so youll just have to go through them until you find one that works the best.
ive spent the last 4months testing random prls and radio combinations its become a bit of an obsession lol
Yea i have tried running that one with both verizon and sprint radios and while better than sprint's prl it still gives me spotty reception in areas I know it shouldn't.
Yea ever since I ran across your prl threads a few months ago I have probably changed prl's 30 times lol. Definitely a fun obsession to have.
One problem i've ran into a few times is after I flash a new prl and reset my data profile data will never engage and the hands free activation step never works because there is no data to update the profile. This led to me having to run a ruu one time because I couldn't get data to turn on no matter what I tried. Just wandering if you ever experienced this in your adventures?
yea i stay away from doin data resotores unless im on a sprint prl because verizon prls it dosnt want to update my data profile sometimes. but most of the time if i power of my phone and take the battery out a couple times itll work.
if there any new people looking at this feel free to ask questions switching between different carrier prls can somtimes quadruple your data speeds its all just trial and error.

cool glade its working
this is the 01337 mod results as of 8:40 this morning
Loaded it up last night right before I fell asleep. I ran a few speed tests at my house and they were a little bit better than the original prl. I will continue to test at work today where I have had issues as well and report back. Thanks again for modding it for me.
@Bierce where do you pull those speedtest screen shots? I use the app from the market. Or are you getting those from tethering?
i use tether and do it from my computers browser thats why my locations are so random
and thats why i do this lol. i would be lucky to get 400kbp/s 4months ago
I have flashed a few PRLs (as beirce has been posting them) and none of the seem to make much of a difference. For the most part I am getting 200-400 Kbits/s.
Maybe no hope in San Antonio.

AT&T is Painfully slow and inconsistant on my tab

Anyone else deal with this? I am getting great signal (same on my phone) But they data is just abhorrent. I usually hover in the sub 100kb/s area in my down speed. And that is when it chooses to bestow data on me at all.
Any ideas?
Are you getting 3G or EDGE? I'm connected through AT&T 3G at the moment and it's rather speedy. I usually clock in around 3mbps. The speed you describe is more typical of EDGE.

I can be connected to the 3g/H network and get crap speeds too. At&t is weak in my area (Southern California).
Yeah, I am getting 3g/H all of the time (never edge)
I am in NYC of all places it should be super fast.
We both live in populated areas - does the number of users on the net account for our slow speeds?

And there is what I mean...
I'm getting the same abysmal speeds on my galtab on AT&T with Overcome ROM and the JK3 modem. It bounces between H and 3G all the time.
I'm in the Seattle area, and people with iPhones get great speeds.
To top it all off, somehow AT&T somehow thinks I'm using 90% of my 250mb every month at these pitiful speeds.

I just flashed JPD and there was no change, but then I tried KM2 and now I'm getting awesome speeds.
Thanks!
JPD slight improvement.
I'm in Seattle...not sure what happened but km2 was blazing fast at first, then it slowed down.
Back to jpd, and its better, but still faster than before.
Edit: JPD did the same thing as Km2, started out fast, then slowed waaay down. I'm back on KM2 again, lets see how this handles for awhile.

My speeds are ok my service just sucks
I'm not sure what to tell you. I'm on stock ROM, stock modem, in a somewhat major city and I always pull pretty good speeds, well fast enough for streaming YouTube and Netflix.
I do know that NYC is not AT&T's best friend. People tend to have a pretty poor experience with the service there. But Seattle, no idea. Try a SIM pull, as that severs the registration with the tower and forces a fresh one which usually results in a much better connection. Failing that, I'd either blame the region (less likely) or the device (rather likely).

AT&T Download - terrible!
Having the same problem in the NYC area. Does anyone know the answer to a few questions:
Which is the best AT&T modem for voice and data on Gingerbread?
What are the correct/optimal APN Settings for this config?
Could AT&T be crippling this because I switched the SIM from a free-o "smartphone" I had to buy to get voice and data? (I have the tethered plan just so I don't get nastry-grams from them)?
Do you have to pull the SIM each time you re--flash the modem to reset the network?
I just switched to AT&T because I need telephony on the Tab (had T-mo and couldn't take the modem/switch thing).
Thanks in advance for any help.

I can't answer about the modem, but the apn setting that you'll need to use, if Broadband doesn't work, is ISP.cingular (no username or password); both are potentially available when you have a tethering plan. The wap.cingular apn cannot be programmed on the Tab when using the stock ROM.
I've used a couple SIM cards for a couple different lines aside from the SIM provided with the Tab and there has been no effect on the connection speed. In fact, I never even activated the SIM that came with it.
But at&t can see the device you're using by virtue of the fact that your SIM is inserted and connected. If they want, they can, and in some cases will, nail you for using a device that's not authorized with your line. Remember that US companies will not classify this as a smartphone as they do elsewhere in the world...it's more in the realm of the netbook, and technically warrants an according plan.

AT&T APN and Modem Settings
I am on the OC Jupiter ROM so no problem editing APN settings. I didn't activate the SIM that came with the Tab and I canceled the plan last week to be sure I wouldn't be billed.
I bought the tethering plan to be sure I wouldn't run afoul of their contract. I don't want to do anything but use the device I paid for with the features Samsung baked into it. Seems nuts that we have to go through these hoops when the folks in Europe have been enjoying fully functional devices for nearly a year now.
I re-set the APN to the default after re-flashing the JK3 modem yesterday and at it jumped up from .7 mbps to just under 3 mbps. Still not optimal (I used to get 5 mbps on TMo service/Tab, but no phone - that's another story). I now have to remember to tick the in-call volume down two notches and as I am testing again this morning the speed has fallen off some again.
Will try your apn settings and let you know if I have better luck. Thanks for the advice!
I've been rocking the KM2 modem since last week with my prepaid AT&T (APN: Broadband), and have been getting really good speeds throughout the Seattle area.
I'd say for my tab, it's a winner!
What rom are you using?
Have you used a voice and data sim with that modem? You would have to select the wap.cingular apn, and have a rom different than stock (stock won't let you use any apn other than Broadband).
On Overcome ROM
@rangercaptain - I am on the OC Jupiter ROM, and have a voice/data SIM from AT&T. Have the WAP.Cingular APN and added Broadband. That in and of itself boosted the speed to 2.5 mbps down, which is ok but not great. Was on the JK3 modem (and have to keep remembering that volume control is two ticks down). Just switched to KM2 based on @mykie242's report.
Speed tests don't go above 1.2 mbps down now, but the browser does seem to be a whole lot faster (really odd). Will use for a couple of days, then try JPD and report back.
I am in the NY Metro area if that helps. Many thanks again!

Not to pick a nit, but stock will permit you to add isp.cingular, the basic, pre-broadband tethering APN.
