[Q] win mo 6.5 apps on windows 7 - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

I havent seen this question here.
Currently I am running windows 6.5 Elegancia on my HD2.
Device T-Mobile.
I would like to know if I install windows 7 in my phone, will I still be able to run apps running for windows 6.5?
I have lot of essential apps in my current 6.5 ROM like
Mireo Black edition (GPS)
Wild card Mobile (Visiting card reader)
O market.
Voice recorder
In call recorder
TCPIMP
Metric converter
Flash light
RAM cleaner ...etc
Please let me know if these applications would run on my windows 7 as well .
If yes, would there be any performance issues ?
If no?
Are there any alternatives to the above apps ?
For E.G. alt GPS application for reading my .cpf Map files.
etc
Thanks in advance.

I can't answer for everything, but there are many apps on the store.
It would be great to have an equivalent of OMarket! Is there any? (alternative market)

I'm sorry but I don't think so.
WP7 uses a different file system, there exists of course the possibility to install apps via toms xap installer, but as "old" WM6.5 user I can guarantee you that you won't be able to install your apps as you are used to.
If you are lucky you can install apps via Zune/Marketplace.
If I can you give an advice, I would tell you to "restart" everything on WP7 it is really worth of it.
Hope I could help you
PS: try to install all apps via Zune, then when you reflash a rom, Zune installs everything from it's alone on the device.

All applications you mentioned are also available for WP7. There are lots of substitutes with the same features.

I was disappointed to read this thread (although I suspected the answer would be "no".) Unfortunately I have some expensive apps on my HD2 - dictionaries and GPS - so it looks as though I will have to hang onto my HD2 until it breaks, as I don't want to have to buy them all again.

newbie need help...please

i just get my htc touch diamond original in malaysia with touch3d ver 1.1.34571.0_1630.38. my diamond is new with original softwares.Previously i used symbian smart phone. But i found some trouble when i use win mobile because i do not understand it well.
i have a few question, i will be glad if seniors in this forum can help me.
my questions...
1)my touch diamond have only 80++mb for my device, remain 3.2gb is internal storage.i found problem when i install software because the message said not enough space. so can i install the software on "internal storage"? or can i do a new partition that make my device 1gb?
2)how to use .cab files?
3)if certain software that come in .rar @ .zip format, how to install in my diamond? (just extract it in paste into the diamond or have to install using active snyc?)
4) my original set come with activesnyc cd, but can only work with window xp, but my os is win vista....how to solve it?
5) i found that my diamond is damn slow, i found the forum " List of Diamond Tweaks " that can increase the performance of the diamond, but i can't found registry editor in my diamond.
6)the g sensor seem very great, but actually how to use it?(i only found it work in opera browser, how to use it in games likes need for speed undercover?)
7)the footprint add-on, i like to have it on my diamond. it is ok to work on my touch diamond?
8)the gps softwares, the pda shop give me the QuickGPS. but how about other like Papago , copilot n navitel?actually how it works?
9)i saw the new touch diamond2's ui, with is better than the one in touch diamond1. can i install the diamond2 ui into diamond1?(worried about it because the RAM n ROM in diamond 1 is smaller than diamond2, screen size also smaller)
thank you very much for reading my post.
Ok, welcome and use the search button up ther that it will solve almost all your future doubts...for now, i'll tell you what i know.
1)YOu can install the softwares on the internal storage, but not the "System" ones, like Opera, Touchflow 3d and others. You will see, if you install it and it doesn't work, uninstall and reinstall it on the device
2)Just tranfer than into the memory (any, storage or phone) and click the file on the phone.
3)Extract it on your computer, if it's a cab, do step 2. If it's a folder with an "EXE" file, double click it. If it says "not a valid win32 aplication", just transfer to the memory and execute the "exe" through the phone explorer. If it's a windows installer, connect your phone through the activesync and install it.
4) http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/help/synchronize/device-center-download.mspx
5) There is no built-in, download and install the PHM Registry editor or TaskManager or any other. This is my personal favorite: http://freewareppc.com/utilities/taskmanager.shtml
6)The first one is my favorite:

7)Can't say, never used it.
8)On my diamond i have Igo 8 (http://www.igomyway.eu/product_4.html) and works perfect, just like a Gps-only tool. I also know that some others like Destinator and TOMTOM work really well.
9)Not yet finished, but it's being ported:

Well, if you do official HTC update from their site with your own S/N you'll not loose your warranty. In my opnion cooked rooms are better, but i won't tell wich one. That depends on the programs you like and how you like your diamond, is really personal and it's a "Forbiden" discussion here. It's up to you to read the posts and see if it's worth it a try.
If you have any more doubts, you can PM me for opnions, but i don't think this thread is a good place to discuss this, cause the matter already been discussed several times.

Just Bought an HD2 WICH Apps are really needed for daily use??

As you see the title! Please put some apps for HD2!
Thanks a LOT
Appreciate it!!
Wifi remote access for file transfers (if you have wifi in the house) because it's faster than a usb cable.
The newest version of the facebook app from MS marketplace
Pimbackup
dutty's task manager
I have more but they aren't for day to day use (except for maybe coreplayer but that's not free). Also search for tips and tweaks and have a read.
+1 Wifi Remote Access
G-Remote ($9) if you watch TV/video through your PC and want an ace remote control
TCMPMP Video Player (free) - so you can just drop videos straight on to your phone (like Divx and Xvid) and play them straight off (or CorePlayer but it's $30)
AlReader2 - The BEST ebook-reader bar none
Google Maps (obviously)
TomTom or iGo (both paid) are both great GPS navigators
FPSECE (I've not tried it since it came out of beta) which, for $10, gives you a frickin' PLAYSTATION on your phone!!!
MyPlayer (free) is the WM iPlayer equivalent - plus other freeview channels and live TV (assuming you're UK)
And down the line, consider looking at how to flash ROMs etc. if you want more tabs/newer features/better speed and stability (if you choose the right ROM!)
There's a Torch application (free) which uses your flash as an emergency torch - very bright and very handy!
Oh, and Windows MyPhone is (imo) the best way to back-up contacts, texts, etc.
Lastly, need a game for the bus? Try Experiment 13 - it's free and the graphics/physics are great!
Oh, and want to replace the basic mp3 player? Try S2P, very colourful, and fast to navigate, very similar to the iphone music player if you've seen that - although it's just left beta and is now $4 (although probably an old version about)
---
All of these are findable on XDA. Finally, welcome to the forum!!
Hrs of fun ahead

I happen to know that there are some major issues with cookies home tab 1.8. Don't you think recommending a piece of know buggy software (no matter how good previous versions were) is a bit reckless?

There seem to be serveral crash bugs in it, major slow down issues and from what i can gather it's a bit of a mess. All the custom rom threads are on fire with request for 1.7 cabs (fools should have kept backups) and declarations of wishing to wait till 1.8.1
Personally i think sense is perfectly fine for my needs. It just need s kick in the butt to make it faster when it's after it's first boot.

I've not had no problems with cookies 1.8. I think it actually runs much smoother and is far more customizable than previous versions, no issues so far from a mess, anyways he was asking for opinions on apps & I gave mine
I like Bing for movie times. It also has turn-by-turn directions. Map-wise, I think Google Maps looks better, but Bing is a far sleeker application.
No issues from 1.8 for me... But let's keep this thread on track for our newbie friend, right?
To newbie : Cookie's Home Tab is a fantastic modification to your homepage, which provides you with many more shrtocuts on your homepage and tons of other configurations (such as a music player, task-list etc), but as you can see, the latest version may be buggy. Previous versions are stable as anything tho.
Thanks!
Thank you all for your quick responses!! LovE YA ALLLL!
i think everyone forgot to mention office mobile 2010 and i forgot to mention the following:
Leo Cpu speed
Chainfire's 3D driver patch
BSB tweaks
SRS wowhd 2.1
myriad java
vncviewer
And if you like gaming and a bit of nostalgia try out fpsece. It's a playstation emulator
just about to type BSB tweaks and saw the post above..
Fpsece - a must
skyfire - for browsing flash sites like tvcatchup.com
xda shutdown - handy for a quick reset
HDWalls - full screen wallpaper
JWMD icon changer - change all icons in start menu etc.
LeoCPU speed
world cup app - www.mobilepractices.com
Scilors Groove Mobile/Downloader - stream or download any tune
G-Alarm - not free but very good alarm app
mem maid or SKTools - to clean up your HD2
my Player - great bbc iplayer and live TV app (in the UK)
Sky - (if you've got a sky box you can remote record)
Games....
Mini Golf Wacky Worlds
SPB Puzzle
Experiment 13
Pool Rebel
Ivy the Kiwi
Morphgear
Fpsece (so good I put it in twice!)
that should keep you going for a bit!
if your gonna suggest the world cup application then i'll suggest the F1 live timing application. Watching the canadian grand prix on sunday with it was amazing.
My essentials are:
1. Dial-up Enabler/Disabler
2. NETCFv35
3. RegEdit
4. Remote Tracker (with MyMobiler on the PC)
5. SPB TV
6. WunderRadio
7. Total Commander
Navi: MN7
Other: GPS Weather Radar, mobiPocket Reader with Wikipedia (2008)
Works fine alltogether!
Greetings
oldT830man (now a new HTC HD2 man, but I keep my T830)
Hello All, thanks for this thread, very useful. One question, what is the right regeditor?
I have used TCM, but can't figure out how to import reg keys (tweaks exported to save effort next time I hard reset). PHM regeditor seems to have the import keys greyed out. Mobile registry editor and Tascal seem to import files, but the keys don't actually change. Am I just a n00b and missing something?
Figured it out, simply copy the reg file into the registry root. TCM does it all then!
i use remote desktop client to log onto my pc im suprised more people dont use it as often as i do to control their pc its so easy to set up
all u got to do is right click my computer, properties and enable remote connections from there.
then when ur on your own wifi just connect to the pc's hostname or ip.
forward port 3389 on ur router to your desktop pc and you can do it over the internet too by connecting to your external ip / hostname
i use it a lot to do stuff i cant do on my phone, also if i want to download something when im out i can set it and it will be done when i get home etc
.........
i also play emulators and just installed as many tower defense games as i could find.
tomtom and igo... both installed to memory card and the shortcuts are set up to reinstall when i flash. the settings DO save, but i have addresses set in my contacts anyway and tomtom has the feature to look up from your addressbook
i use torch on my shortcuts, but a different one that doesnt have a user interface its just on and off.
i have my brightnesses (both) set to dimmest, and i have the app autobacklight as a shortcut so i can switch between dark and auto (which is always bright enough). its usually on auto unless im in a dark environment. 1 click dim mode lol
batti is another good one. there are lots of programs like batti that let you put your battery level accross the top of the screen, but batti is the best to me because it lets you customise the colours perfectly so you can match it to whatever colour theme you got going on or just have it how you want it.
i used to use s2u2 because you could change the background randomly and show lots of appointments on the main screen. and read texts check missed called etc. dont even have to unlock your phone half the time...
i just installed omarket and that has unlocked a lot for me. you should def do that. i had to make an account on the website but it was worth the hassle.
metaldetector is a great app. so wierd how it actually works.
i have various guitar tuners, im still looking for the best one though...
lmt is another good one that basically makes your phone way more useable. i dont use all the features, but its still added a lot to the way i can use the phone
i read some pdf's on my phone now that it doesnt take ages to render pages...
ive used wififofum in the past, i should have that on my phone now really its v useful when you wanna see all the networks around you.
msn to chat once in a while
mostly been using energyrom

the most common way is to plug your hd2 into your pc via usb.
then copy the files you have downloaded (usually its .cab) and paste them onto your phones sd card storage (via my computer)
then unplug your phone from the pc
then on your phone, use file explorer to find the cabs and run them. that will install it.
then to run it, find it in the start menu...
as for what to install first, system stuff.
but really, if you install a rom you will wipe all your data, but dont worry about flashing and roms yet, just try out different apps and customisations you like while you pick it all up.
i install things like s2u2 first (lockscreen app) when ive set my phone up i use it for a while before i install the next thing, so that if a problem pops up its usually because of the last thing you installed/modified.
read a lot of stuff. dont worry if it doesnt make sense at first.
After you install all those recomended applications above, try a keyboard called Swype, your head will hit the roof with amazement!! so be careful.

Galaxy S + Android - The missing features

Hello everyone,
I just moved from a Samsung Omnia II (WinMo 6.5) to the Galaxy S (Android).
Well, I'm really in love with this device. Android reminds me the good old Palm days but on steroids . I believe it took me too long to move away from Windows Mobile.
But, as any OS newbie I'm missing some features. Instead of writing them down I thought it would be better to post them here. This way I might get some help but I'll also update my solutions so other freshmen will have a reference.
Here it goes:
1) Usb webcam - (something like WebCamera Plus from WM)*
* it seems hard to find usb apps for Android. Everything is either web or wifi based.
[PARTIALLY SOLVED] - Using Placaware USB Webcam . Video is working on several PC apps (e.g. Skype) but no audio. And the development is "frozen".
2) Driver Free Bluetooth presenter - I've found many on the market but they all rely on driver installation. I can't understand since windows has a BT protocol for that by default.
3) Pdf Printer - (something like FluidPDF VPrint for WM)
4) Good/Fast Encrypt Tool - like FreeOTFE4PDA on WM or TrueCrypt in Windows
[SOLVED] - Or at least partially solved using GP Pro (thanks to Android Market)
5) HP12C Emulator - can only find HP48.
6) Fax send/receive solution - like KSE Software Truefax Phone Edition in WM (believe me, some people still send/receive faxes
7) Metro Maps - like MetrO for WM
[SOLVED] - Using aMetro (thanks to spyrale at post #7)
8) USB auto file sync solution - like MobSync in WM
9) IE Favorites syncing - used to sync the WM and PC directories using MobSync
10) USB Device controller - like MyMobiler for WM. Again I can only find wifi solutions.
11) Top Explorer solution - like Resco Explorer in WM. I've been using Astro and Root Explorer but was hoping for a one single app that does the full job.
12) Skype type solution - what going on with these guys? Are they out of their minds thinking that people will buy an specific device just because it has skype on it? I've got the Skype beta for Android but I can't get a dial pad on it????
[SOLVED] - Using Nimbuzz (thanks to Kalikot at post #2)
13) Full Backup Solution - like Spb Backup in WM -Perhaps Titanium Backup does the job but I haven't figured ou how to use it (still learning)
14) Good Travel Management App - like Spb Traveler - I know I know... search in the Market - I have done it but the search function in the Market is kinda poor don't you agree?
15) Palm Emulator - like StyleTap on WM - Am I asking too much?
Themes and Customization - I've been trying to have a full black solution. I've been using LauncherPro + Folder Organizer and it's 90% done. I'll post some screen caps in the next days.
16) The only missing feature is a black notification area.
[SOLVED] Of course the solutiong was right here at xda (thanks to MacaronyMax.)
Edited 11/Oct
17) Video Editor - can't believe it doesn't come out of the box (maybe on Android 3.0 )
18) Better Search - the search function in Android doesn't lookup on all contact fields. Sometimes I want to search by a company name (like my car's dealer) and it won't find. WM had the same problem and it was slow. With Android the search is fast but only on name fields. That's a feature I miss since the good old Palm days.
[SOLVED] Using Power Search (thanks to Android Market)
Well, I'll keep this post up to date. Or will try my best since I've got a 9 months cutie at home
I dont know about the others but the best Skype solution atm is Nimbuzz which also has its own VOIP service. It has a delay during calls but there arent any other better options other than the complicated SIP routing.
Titanium Backup does its job even if you move from other custom roms or other firmware. Its wonderful and its worth the price for the additional batch backup/restore options
Hi... I moved from a Samsung Omnia i910 withWM 6.1pro.
The BIGGEST thing I miss from wm over android 2.1 eclair (I have not flashed any unofficial 2.2 roms) is something as simple as installing apps to the external sd card.
I know some apps on wm 6.1 were forced to install directly to the phone memory but with MOST apps you had the option to place on the external card to save ROM space.
It suprises me that such a sophisticated device as the SGS and such a powerful OS such is Android did not come out of the box this way.

Blame google and android pre2.1 , Froyo is said to be able to install to SD but frankly I've yet had need. Also what do you expect? Winmo has been out for what, 10 years or more? Android has only really started to take hold in last 3 years.
Post #1 Edited - two missing features solved and two more added.
unless there are others come from the sam Winmo background, else you need to provide the explanation of each WinMo apps
for metro maps have you tried aMetro?
for backup i use myBackupPro, simpler than titanium backup..
Boy I'm really enjoying Android. It's fast and clean like the good old Palm and still has all the capabilities of Windows Mobile.
I've been a handheld user since the very first Palm Professional and so far I've had only three killing devices:
1) Palm Professional - the good old one (still at home as a remote control hehe)
2) Palm Treo - I still miss the fun with that keyboard.
3) Samsung Galaxy "S" - loving it all the way. Android, great screen, swype etc etc....
One more Solved. USB Webcam (check post #1).

[Q] What can I do on WP7 without activation?

I'm thinking about flashing WP7 but don't want to bother with activation and Live Services. I'm planning to dual boot WP7 with Android on SD. But I'd like to play with WP7. So what can I do with WP7 WITHOUT activation? Here are what I'm interested: Phone, Text (SMS), Music (Zune), Web, GPS (Navigation), Camera (and Camcorder). Do all of these work?
Thanks

I used it for the whole of today and Phone, Text, Web and Camera/Camcorder worked perfectly.
Haven't tried Zune or GPS.
Thanks for your answer. Has anybody tried Zune and GPS?
music & videos work. gps haven't fully tried yet.
Tested GPS, fast and accurate. Bluetooth also pairs well with parrot bt car kit.
Do we need to go through the unlocking procedure? Do we need to run Chevron after flashing WP7? And can we install third-party(non-market) application on the phone?
All questions reflect on not activating live service.
Thank all the help,

Unlock it with Chevron and install applications manually.
You can even install apps from the Marketplace (free ones) downloading to the PC first and use "WP7-DesktopMarketplace_1.4.0.0.zip" (search XDA), to deploy the apps into your phone.
I flashed it yesterday, played a little bit trying to get WP7 and Android booting from SD, and after 6 hours went back to WM 6.5. Somehow WP7 looks too simple for my taste, a bastard child between an IPhone and Android , it may suit simpler users, but I missed the control that you have on Windows Mobile.

[Q] Old 6.5 apps to WP7 is it possible

I've just bought another HTC HD2 had the power supply on the old one packed up and I can only charge the batteries ( I have 4 now) out of the phone, I've previously installed the Energy Rom and it was working brilliantly with its 16 gig microSd card and Tomtom installed.
My question is, there are links here to HOW TO INSTALL WP7 to HTC HD2, even I can follow them BUT, can I use my old apps "6.5" in the new WP7 OS, I'm not sure if its worth changing to WP7 if the old apps wont work like Skype and such.
Thanks in advance.
Rikki.
No, it's bit like asking if you can run iPhone apps on WM6.5 - just can't be done unfortunately.
Thx alot....
I was hoping that some apps were backwardly compatible, but I guess not.
Thanks again, I might play around on the phone thats being returned, it wont matter if I brick it lol.
Sadly not. There are some that have been recreated for WP7 but there is such a disparity in the underlying software architectures that porting just ain't gonna happen...unless someone writes an emulator.
But half of the fun of WP7 is playing with the new apps, some of which are quite sexy and a big step on from WM6.5.
^Maybe but i dont have igo primo for wp7? anyway is there any app for wp7 like igo ?
things are moving fast, every thing is possible but as mentioned above WP7 is made to be the new face for Microsoft and the past is past.
as for emulator, it could be the right answer.
but i don't think it would be for the HD2 and HD7 in their current hardware versions.

If you live in Europe then you can try Navigon Select. Pretty basic but does the job quite well and has the same map source as iGo
For the USA there is a free sat nav software in the Marketplace called A-to-B. This app has european maps (at least for my country quite good ones!), but turn by turn is US only for the moment. European voice guidance is coming soon.
I recall reading that WP7 is based on Windows CE 6.0 (R2, I think). I've also read of GPS devices with CE6 that run some CE5.x apps (after unlocking). In fact, no CE version has ever broken compatibility with previous versions. What usually gets in the way is the layer on top of CE: Windows Mobile before and WP7 now. With WM, problems attempting to run an app in a different version than it was designed for are usually due to 1) version checks during installation failing, 2) version checks at runtime failing, and 3) missing DLLs. I have a lot of experience with overcoming all three in order to get WM apps running on plain CE devices (like GPS devices), so, once I install WP7 on my HD2, I'll see what I can do. Microsoft has made a lot of changes to WP7 to cripple the underlying OS (ex. CE6 supports multitasking), so they may have removed or implemented something that I'm not aware of to lock the phone down and purposely break compatibility (afterall, if WM apps can be made to run, it'd undo what they're trying to accomplish, security-wise), but I'll give it a shot.
there is nothing to stop us having 6.5 apps run on here, both software and hardware are compatible BUT WP7 doesnt use the same set of APIs, so WM6.5 programs would need to be reprogramed (mostly around the UI and hardware interface) to work, of course if they were going to do that then they may as well just write a native program.
This also would mean your phone would need to be unlocked, soooo unless someone developes an emulation layer as a go between you'll not get them working im afraid.
