[Q] Old 6.5 apps to WP7 is it possible - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

I've just bought another HTC HD2 had the power supply on the old one packed up and I can only charge the batteries ( I have 4 now) out of the phone, I've previously installed the Energy Rom and it was working brilliantly with its 16 gig microSd card and Tomtom installed.
My question is, there are links here to HOW TO INSTALL WP7 to HTC HD2, even I can follow them BUT, can I use my old apps "6.5" in the new WP7 OS, I'm not sure if its worth changing to WP7 if the old apps wont work like Skype and such.
Thanks in advance.
Rikki.

No, it's bit like asking if you can run iPhone apps on WM6.5 - just can't be done unfortunately.

Thx alot....
I was hoping that some apps were backwardly compatible, but I guess not.
Thanks again, I might play around on the phone thats being returned, it wont matter if I brick it lol.

Sadly not. There are some that have been recreated for WP7 but there is such a disparity in the underlying software architectures that porting just ain't gonna happen...unless someone writes an emulator.
But half of the fun of WP7 is playing with the new apps, some of which are quite sexy and a big step on from WM6.5.

^Maybe but i dont have igo primo for wp7? anyway is there any app for wp7 like igo ?

things are moving fast, every thing is possible but as mentioned above WP7 is made to be the new face for Microsoft and the past is past.
as for emulator, it could be the right answer.
but i don't think it would be for the HD2 and HD7 in their current hardware versions.

If you live in Europe then you can try Navigon Select. Pretty basic but does the job quite well and has the same map source as iGo
For the USA there is a free sat nav software in the Marketplace called A-to-B. This app has european maps (at least for my country quite good ones!), but turn by turn is US only for the moment. European voice guidance is coming soon.

I recall reading that WP7 is based on Windows CE 6.0 (R2, I think). I've also read of GPS devices with CE6 that run some CE5.x apps (after unlocking). In fact, no CE version has ever broken compatibility with previous versions. What usually gets in the way is the layer on top of CE: Windows Mobile before and WP7 now. With WM, problems attempting to run an app in a different version than it was designed for are usually due to 1) version checks during installation failing, 2) version checks at runtime failing, and 3) missing DLLs. I have a lot of experience with overcoming all three in order to get WM apps running on plain CE devices (like GPS devices), so, once I install WP7 on my HD2, I'll see what I can do. Microsoft has made a lot of changes to WP7 to cripple the underlying OS (ex. CE6 supports multitasking), so they may have removed or implemented something that I'm not aware of to lock the phone down and purposely break compatibility (afterall, if WM apps can be made to run, it'd undo what they're trying to accomplish, security-wise), but I'll give it a shot.

there is nothing to stop us having 6.5 apps run on here, both software and hardware are compatible BUT WP7 doesnt use the same set of APIs, so WM6.5 programs would need to be reprogramed (mostly around the UI and hardware interface) to work, of course if they were going to do that then they may as well just write a native program.
This also would mean your phone would need to be unlocked, soooo unless someone developes an emulation layer as a go between you'll not get them working im afraid.

run WM in iphone, Android in PPC???

Is that possible to run WM in an iPhone.
Or run Android in a PPC?
I mean directly flash the ROM into iPhone or PPC.
Not like "running android on Kaiser"
Could anyone do this kind of "transplan"?
We should have a sub forum discuss about it, that make WM, and PPC more fun with it.
People are trying to make andriod to work in emulators on top of windows mobile first because they want it to be stable.
When everything is working stable, developers could look into flashing a andriod rom with andriod bootloader onto a device.
For now it is more important to get everything to work properly.
and about the iPhone.. we still dont know wether its fake or not.. its just a rurmor.. the developer promised it to be released by jan.. till then wait for jan..
i think WM on iphone is fake.............
there are very rare chances of that happenning.......
WM on iphone
there is WM on iphone, Norwegian developer did it,
http://5x5m.com/lp/277/windowsmobile.html
is it going to be freeware???????
i would seriously think about getting an i phone then........
Why would somebody want to have WM on a device which can't be used with stylus?
At the start, I knew that there was something fishy about it. Look at the phone, the bootloader is too "friendly" to be a beta.

"Okay, looks like we (I, the bloggers, the Internet, the Windows Mobile users) were "too excited" (?) by running Windows Mobile on iPhone hardware. As it turned out (thanks for the comments and E-Mails), the video and the whole story above is a hoax and part of a viral marketing campaign from Sonic Emotion, a maker of surround-sound systems for PCs, handhelds and other things that need surround sound." - Source

yes, but it doesnt work very well
I think everybody should now, that there is a "working" androit for windows mobile based devices...
I'm definitely going to try it once its bootable as a seperate OS.
I'm sure the peeps at XDA are going to be successful in porting it on to ppc aswell, so I'm just patiently waiting.

There is already android on msm 7200 Chipsets like the Kaiser or Vouge
And it's not an Emulator and run on the ROM.
But you must load the Bootloader "HaRET" on Windows, and after that, Windows mobile is quitted
also, windows mobile is working on iphone wich lags realy
Say WM is flashed onto iPhone somehow. But as Parg said it can't be controlled by stylus. And there is no Dpad, then some application can not be used with that hardware.
Indeed, it makes much more sense to get a Diamond instead of trying to flash WM on iPhone.
Additional to the hardware troubles (stylus, unsupported multitouch, ...), there would be license troubles. Guess you don't want to pay MS for WM on iPhone, even if that was possible, right?
Android, or at least a compatible system, should be possible for every device (at least in theory). However, if I buyed a device including a WM license, I'd prefer a good emulator (or rather VM, similar to the J2ME VMs which allow to use Opera Mini). That way, both WM and Android programs would run fine. OK, bad chance to modifiy the main system interface (start menu + Today screen), but I like the plugin concept of the Today screen anyway...

iphone? whats that? wasnt it a fad fashion accessory from last year that claimed to be a tech revolution in, well, in, I dont know? lets see, its not a smart phone, not a PPC, not a Symbian, its more a feature phone containing a proprietary operating system with very limited 3rd party support apps and interface.
Why would such a great device want WM running on it? oh yeah I know, it sux and its boring UI would eventually drive you nuts for lack of customization and limitation of available "decent" apps! hahahahhahhahha It'll never run M2D or some of the other awesome skinnable applications or any Linux OS etc, Its just WacOSX and doesnt even provide onboard bluetooth with A2DP holly crap even my 5 year old piece of junk Symbian supports A2DP, in a few months WM devices will be released with Bluetooth v2.1 (700kbps) and soon version 3 speeds up to 480Mbps. carried away sorry

Dpad is not essential for PPC,
usually, apps can direct operate by touching the screen.
the only problem is games, a lot of games have to use dpad as controller.

iphone hardware is not a big problem,
as long as iphone is one device, no matter how many people are study on it, it is one device.
Android on PPC is a problem, there are so many different PPC, which one should we study on?
License is not necessary, Hacking, of course, is not legally with license.

can i install windows on htc hero instead of Android

HI,
is it possible to install windows in htc hero instead of android soft. I tried to search but couldnt find anything thanks

may i ask you why you want to do that???

yes someone was saying its possible and wanna know if yes or not if yes can anyone explain how?

there is even an easier way to get windows mobile OS: buy a WM Device!
Really a HTC Touch Diamond 2 has basically the exact same Hardware other than the touchscreen which is resistive.
Wanting to flash your android device with WM is as strange as the currently release WM Theme for android.
People are buying android devices to get rid of the old stuff (wm 6-6.5) why on earth would they want to install a WM Theme?!

Almost every people here is against windows mobile, so I don't think you will obtain an answer, sorry.
Lots of thread were started asking to run windows on these phones (sapphire and dream) and they always ended up wit people saying this is a stupid question.
My opinion is that it would be interesting, such as dual booting in your home PC.
I really wanted to get rid of wm because it stinks. it is slow i have to SR almost everyday it crashed etc. etc.
but now i'm using android my phone works great fast responsive. never needed to restart the phone and its on.
why trading the good stuff for the bad stuff. i used wM/Windows for years and i was never pleased with it now i'm using linux (on pc/hero) and its great IT WORKS so why would you wanna use wm.
youre question technically it would be possible the wm phones have the same hardware. but i think noone succeeded to install wm or viceversa. wm phones can start android but doens't work 100% and when the phone goes off they loose the data
Rather than just bashing WM (which of course I could do) I will state facts.
Android has been hacked to work on WM phones, such as the Vogue, Kaiser, Polaris, Raphael, Diamond, etc. This has been possible because Android is a UI that runs on top of Linux. Linux and Android both being open source, we have the program code for the entire OS at our disposal to change around, hack drivers, and make work on non-Android hardware.
Windows Mobile is (almost) entirely closed-source. This will make it pretty much impossible to run on a phone that it's not licensed to work on. Microsoft and HTC would have to both agree to running WM on the Hero before you'd see that happen.
EDIT: @commodoor: Yes, the hardware appears to be the same, ie. the same chips, but there will be intricate differences like memory addresses, IRQ's etc that would make this darn near impossible to achieve.
Just my tuppence worth...
I thought with the Hero having a capacitive screen that it wouldn't be able to run Windows... Thought the OS was limited to resistive screens... or am I wrong?

Nothing against the poster of the above but REALLY? Putting WM on the Hero seems like the most EPIC FAIL of all time. (I wish we had a facepalm smiley to put in here).
But constructively - from what I understand, putting Android on a WM device is relatively easy (for someone with the knowledge, patience and experience) but putting WM on an Android device is almost impossible.
Technically it would be possible to do... if HTC have drivers for WinMo to talk to the Hero hardware and Microsoft gave HTC a license to put it on the phone... but that ain't gonna happen any day soon.
But then again there exists a whole lot of skilled hackers that can make any toaster run whatever they want it to run... But then again WinMo is closed source. And the skilled hackers don't know how to make any drivers.
And WinMo is a really boring OS. I have an old HTC TyTN (the first one) with WinMo 6 Pro on it. It was really boring to use since the market for that phone was the business people and I am not a business-minded human. I wanted a little more flexibility and a nicer UI to configure the way I want it.
Android + HTC's Sense UI (actually TouchFLO) is giving me that kind of freedom.
Oh... sorry for going really offtopic on this one.
To give you the short answer to the original poster; no you can't. Theoretically yes. Feasible... no.
thread closed
people have given answers.....and ill close before a flame war starts.
thank you

Do you bother with Windows Mobile anymore?

I said I'd never go Android because it looked silly and geeky and now I'm addicted to it. I can't believe I put up with WinMo for all the years and didn't use another system. Android (Mostly HTC Sense style) destroys Windows Mobile and the only thing I still like about Windows Mobile is the Windows Live Messenger official client.
Anyone still use WinMo who also uses Android? Why do you? What are your reasons?
Garmin Mobile XT. There is no Garmin GPS software on Android (and I have many Garmin maps)
4 days ago i installed andorid just to use 1 application. ONE!!!!
and today i just use winmo for 1 application only (garmin). ONE!!!!
and my default boot now is android. i even turn airplane mode on in winmo so that i can't use winmo as phone anymore. now i use winmo just to copy data.img and the default connection is usb disk.
after i buy igo/papago/ndrive/whatever i'll stop using winmo altogether.
its a choice really there are lot of good things on winmo and same time lot of good apps in android.some of us can have dual boot.its just a choice.
I actually like both android and windows, if windows had a better market place I wouldn't bother with android, I love the simplicity of windows, the multitasking is by far better in windows, I can have lots of apps open and simply switch between them, android does this to a certain extent, htc sense is far superior in windows the slick weather animations are more detailed, sense on android seems a slightly basic affair, on windows I love the bbc news app much nicer to use than the android one, now facebook app works a treat on windows, my memory map navigator simply syncs with my pc maps and works better than any of the basic ordinance survey map apps on android, there are lots of bird/wildlife guides on windows, hardly any on android.
Alas android has many more games and a vast marketplace, and flash works straight out the box on android whereas its a little hit and miss on windows.
I can run windows and never use my 500mb per month data limit, with android I have to be so careful of what its downloading in the background constantly.
So yes I still like windows, androids ui almost feels a little mobile shell to me and I found that a widgety cluttery hodge podge
Whats windows mobile? lol
maybe winmo is dead..but its true,i dont want to completely change to android bcoz of garmin
I haven't booted to Win Mo since October (and I was a huge defender of the OS).
If I ever do need to boot back into it, it's because I have TomTom remaining on 6.5, but as I'm not driving currently then it's not likely to happen! Indeed I may well go to NAND in the next week.
I agree with the above post that Sense was slicker/more attactive on 6.5, but (except TomTom) there's not a single App that's missed or not excelled by it's Android alternative - and even if there is one, it's outweighed by the sheer number of quality Apps available on 'Droid.
But 6.5 was never a bad platform, just Microsoft completely screwed it with no MarketPlace and no UI, until HTC and Cookie showed how it could be done.
Overall the experience of Android is fantastic on the HD2, so for me, no looking back!
Same here...I never thought I'll leave WinMo for Android at the early stages but here we are today. I havent used Windows Mobile as a phone for nearly 4 months now and cant simply understand the vast user interactivity and experience between the two OSes. Android totally kills WinMo but I still go back to it just because of Tomtom which I must say is quite good. Once they get tomtom on Android, I'll most likely ditch WinMO for good.
same here. I always used winmo since 5.0. I couldn t believe that i ever use another OS, but WinMo is dead specially after releasing phone7. After a long time i finally installed android and i don t see a reason to change back. Oh maybe sync with Outlook?!? Oh no wait, outlook can t sync with phone7 Make a pptp vpn with 6.5 oh wait microsoft don t support it s own encrypton mppe )
If you ask me WinMo is dead...
I've installed android to give it another go (tried before on my blackstone and thought it was "meh" ) and to be prepaired for any clients who use it.
It's still meh to be honest, feels clunky, I've no idea if the back arrow is closing an app or leaving it paused in the background, web browsing doesn't work for some of the pages I visit (with link redirects) using either the built in browser or opera mobile, I hate that you can select hyperlinks without zooming in. The email client sucks. I'd check out gallery but I always give up after 5 minutes of it trying to load all the folders with images rather than taking me to a default location and then letting me decide which folder to look in. Album under WM is so much better.
Can't stand the keyboard, god knows why MS copied it for WP7. Having to go to a seperate overlay to get numbers? Come on that's crap. If I can hold a key down and get a row of alternate characters, why can't one of them be a number?
So far I use it mostly for kindle. I've got angry birds installed but prefer huff n puff on WM (just wish it had more levels).
Recently I've been using winmo for fpsece... its so much better and more customizable than psx4droid is. Sometimes I just prefer using winmo, too. I've been using it 8 years... i can do anything I can do on Android with winmo. But sometimes now I prefer Android, too. But my hd2 is perfect, cause I can have both. I just hope magldr gets support for winmo soon.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
As Android has been ported to the HD2 using the SDCard I started to test it, and I noticed that my Android HD2 was much more fast and smooth than using WM.
As soon as the NAND Android version was available, I flashed my HD2 with MAGLDR and installed Android, and I think I'll never rollback, maybe to test WM7 on HD2, but that's the only real reason that would make me rollback to WM.
Not used WinMo once since i first tried out an Android SD Rom in October, and just switched to a NAND build.
Used WinMo since i got my first XDA, an XDA Exec, but i sure wouldn't go back now
If only winmo had better native UI, more finger friendly, and more official support from the popular services (e.g. twitter, dropbox, better facebook app, whatsapp, etc). Then I'd still think winmo is a better and more professional os than android.

This!
I'd feel much safer out in the boondocks with Garmin than I do with Copilot. I tried looking up directions to a golf course once and it wasn't in Copilot - the course has been open more than 10 years!
Even though I've gone full nand android, I certainly wouldn't mind if I could giving up say 50-75mb of nand space for a slim winmo 6.5 dual boot.

Yes, I tried it and have used it on my MDA, Wing, Omnia I900 and even have it installed and running on my HD2. However, SPB has been saying since October 2010 that it will be supporting Android soon. Well here it is, Jan 2011 and soon apparently is still not here. LOL
So, what is the point of 'drooling' at something that is not there. SPB demonstrated V5 back in Feb 2010. One more month and its been 1 YEAR.
I use Android on my HD2 and would not go back to WM regardless of version and whatever SPB has or will have. Their support is non-existant.
I use LauncherPro Plus and it far exceeds SPB Mobile Shell.

+1 same reason for me, IGo or Sygic maps are far from being as good or up to date, copilot map doesn t even exist where i live. I switch to winmo when i take the car to use garmin.
Also i miss a few dictionaries not yet available in Android. And here with edge available only , online dictionaries are really to slow.
WTF is Windows Mobile?

[Q] WP7 Apps on X2?

OK, I know that there are lots of statements about WinMo 6.5 Apps not working on WP7 phones, but what about the reverse ...
Will a WP7 App work on a Windows Mobile 6.5.3 device? And if not, can it have an emulator to run them?
It looks like the new applications are beginning to be developed for WP7, and eventually, there won't be development for 6.5.3 devices ... so that is why I am asking ...
Hello.
Its not possible. WM6.5.x and WP7 have nothing in common. they are totaly different OSs even the main core of the OS is not the same anymore. like a PC with windows 7 and another one with MacOS.
cant run a WP7 apps on WM65x and also there will not be an emulator to have the wp7 apps on wm6.5.x. only a nut would have it made couse WM65x development is officialy dead. shure there are developers on XDA who still wiggle with WM65x and im very fond of that since WM65x is still my favourite OS (i got bored of froyo on my HD2) but even that will stop totaly in a year or two i guess.
there maybe will be an emulator for wm65x apps to be able run on wp7 but deffinitly not he other way around.
in like half a year the first wp7 phones will not cost that much any more and if you realy want the wp7 apps you better start thinking of getting a wp7 phone then.

WM on an Android tablet?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but is it possible to run WM on an Android tablet?
At the moment I have an HTC HD2 running WM and use a load of Apps that would great on a bigger screen, EBook reader etc the problem is they are WM only.
I know nothing about Android beyond that I can get a cheap one on eBay that would do all I want if I could get WM 5+ on it.
Is this possible?
Many thanks
I'm not sure about the whole running on a tablet thing (though it's a nice idea), but one thing I have learnt, is that a lot of WM software don't do any checks on display size. My phone is WQVGA (240x400), and very few things actually use the screen correctly (mainly graphical ones such as emulators and games. ScummVM works nicely though)
my "answer" is just: WTF??? WM on a tablet....instead of android...?
and my advice is to try android a bit and you will find it very intuitive and handy and you will never wish to go back to WM
TBH I have not had the chance to play around with Android so that is good advice.
The problem is that some of the apps I need are WM only and do not look like will get an Android or WM7 update.

apps like?
there is pretty much a replacement for every app
i only didn't find replacement for SMath studio...which is a very powerful math application
since you have HD2 go to hd2 android section and try out SD card roms (not NAND roms since you will have to delete WM) and play a bit with the android SD rom and see if it suits you
EDIT: here you go, you can find and learn everything over here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=735
ok, i have the same question.
is there anyone out there who could give an answer?
i am a big fan of WM (have a htc touch pro) and not a big fan of my mid-tablet with android 2.1
the point ist - until android is ready to connect to ad-hoc wlan it is just *****.
so i would love to change the OS from Android to WM...
Doubt will ever be possible.
His bit a windows powered tablet.
