Nope, was this a replacement phone? They might have just handed you a broken/returned phone?

thanks for the quick reply. and yes the phone is a replacement because my original evo was doing the reboot issue. the phone looks brand new but it came s=off ill post another pic so you can see. it also came with the latest firmware. so it makes no sence unless they made a mistake

I'm starting to wonder because I've seen several posts from different members [and not like brand new accounts, trolls] saying this same thing.

yea same here and I've been on XDA for awhile like since 2008. im glad mine came like this though. i dont know how i would have lived with a stock evo. i probably would have sold it.

Same situation here. Got a refurb with S-off and now I am seeing two posts from people saying the exact same thing. I wonder if they are just starting to unlock to bootloaders. I was shocked when I saw that it was off in the bootloader. I was like jackpot.
The stock Evo experience was driving me up a tree. I didn't realize how much I was addicted to flashing roms.

My guess is you guys got phones that people have modded before. Think about it... if you're S-OFF, an RUU (what they would do to flash the phone back to stock) doesn't change you back to S-ON. So you guys probably got phones that have been modified before - HTC and/or Sprint is not intentionally sending you unlocked phones.

Wow, I got a replacement and just checked, S-ON. It came with 2.3 but did get the 6mb fix OTA after I got the phone. I wish I checked before I did that. Mine has the same sticker, BTW.

God damn internet... sometimes you just can't tell lol sorry!

Think about it guys: the Evo 3D is out. A bunch of people are trading in their Evos for 3D's. When you get a warranty replacement for your Evo, they're giving you a refurb. Chances are, some of these refurbs are s-off because the user rooted them with unrevoked, and the techs at the Sprint store who refurbish them don't bother setting them to s-on.

I'm gonna try to be optimistic, I have a replacement coming because of a bad mic. Hopefully I'll get lucky

Actually you happen to be one of the lucky ones. HTC's CEO, Peter Chou, announced that they would no longer be shipping locked bootloaders. However, not everyone has found this to be true. Below is the offical quote from Chou:
"There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we've listened. Today, I'm confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience," Peter Chou, CEO of HTC
I cannot post the link actually because I have less than 8 posts
There is also some more info for a release of unlocked bootloaders for newer phones to be released in the fall. Search for the HTC page on FB.

What Chou is saying that they are not going to be sending out "new" (models) with locked bootloaders. This has been discussed over and over again. These people that are getting the phones with s-off are refurbs/repaired phones that were previously Unrevoked Forevered and didn't flash s-on.

Brand new phone here replaced with insurance...CAME WITH 2.3.3 and a locked bootloader.
You guys got a previously rooted phone/someone elses garbage phone.
Wouldn't it be so cool to get a used phone that was probably overclocked to Hell and back?
Good luck with your replacement. Not much of a sloppy seconds kind of guy myself.

Gingerbread for the Atrix(not trolling)

So i just called in to att trying to get a credit for my gimped phone, i didn't get a credit sadly but i did get some interesting info.
First and probably the coolest, the guy told me that att does plan on releasing gingerbread for the atrix before the end of Q3 as well as the boot loader unlock. The second thing he told me is that att doesn't plan on allowing side-loading and he said its not looking like the amazon app store, however they aren't holding it against people that are figuring out a way to side load.
Anyways it is what it is but its some info, he also seemed rather shocked that the boot loader wasn't cracked yet, dunno why though when i pressed him he shut up about it.
Q3?! Wow, that is still some time away :/
By that time, most likely Ice Cream will be out already...
interesting info about the bootloader as well... so it should not be that difficult? Hmm...
Interesting no doubt... I think they will have a way to unlock at the sacrifice of your warranty.

Yeah, end of Q3 for AT&T is September, I just checked (they run a Jan - Dec fiscal year). That's a super long time away for something that's already been in work since before the phone was released (based on the engineering build in the Android development forum).

it is a art
2.4 will more than likely not be called ice cream it'll still be call gingerbread. And what the guy said goes along with what the australian guy posted in his thread about motorola giving a bootloader solution similar to what the xoom has but it would be up to the discretion of the carrier if they'd allow it or not and that it would all happen in the ladder part of 2011. But to hear it from att rep is interesting but I don't hold my breathe
http://m.pocketnow.com/android/motorola-promises-android-bootloader-unlock-in-late-2011 maybe the rep just read this and said att was gonna do it... you know how this reps are

I'm sure that someone from at&t told you they were unlocking the bootloader for real. I mean, they won't let us sideload apps but they will unlock that bootloader for us no problem. Makes total sense.

There may be some contractual issue with a 3rd party that is preventing AT&T from "giving" us sideloading, such as a conflict with an AT&T partner and Amazon for example, so it may make sense to not allow it, although they know fully it's going to happen in any event. I think unlocking the bootloader is what's important. The community has enabled pretty much everything else, including sideloading. I do agree though, it's kind of a contradiction.

based on how much these service people actually know, i'm betting they are talking out of their ass. I'm sure he is basing it off of the HTC devices they sell, which are rather easy to meddle with. Since AT&T has never sold a motorola android device before, if they didn't research before speaking, they would have no idea. I'm 100% sure motorola has not told the AT&T service reps how the bootloader works and how to break it.

Q3 or september 11 is 5 months away. In this case, I will rather start looking for other options, such as HTC Sensation, or GSII.
I wish Gingerbread comes to Atrix Soon as well, as 2.2.1 is a real pain. Also once you get spoiled by the newest and greatest android version available, its real dumb and hard to get back to older one... :-(

AT&T has had:
Backflip
Flipside
Flipout
Bravo
Of those four prior to the Atrix, only the Bravo is worth anything. And it got upgraded to 2.2 recently.

how could it be since the phone are ready to ship? wouldn't this delay the launch? the more acceptable thing to do would be to give the devs instructions or fix it via an OTA.

Seriously, you guys can be upset with HTC but, they could have gave some generic reason as to why they are locking their phones and eventually things would have died down. They wouldn't have really suffered from it.
Instead, they went in the other direction. I give them credit for that. All this does is keep me as a customer.

How is this related to the Samsung Vibrant?
Like others mentioned HTC CEO did infact say that they listend to customer complaints, and they will no longer lock the bootloader in their phones. I think the Sensation was already manufactured when he made that comment, so hopefully Sensation owners will get an update to unlock.
However, my question is. Why was this thread made? What does this have to do with the Samsung Vibrant?

Sorry, I wasn't specific at all there. I get the sense, pardon the pun, that EVO users are feeling left behind after this update. The words half-assed were used multiple times as I scrolled the thread. Also, the fact that they were left on Sense 1.0 burned people bad.

2.3 Root: Where we are.

First, this isn't a post about how to get root on 2.3. I know, at present, it is not possible. I know, I have tried pretty much every method imaginable
Anyway:
Where are we? I've heard rumors that S-off is coming from unreoked, alpharev x, team win will be coming "any day." Yeah, I'll believe it when I get it.
But, I think we are at the point where we are at HTC and Sprint's mercy. I mean, are we at the point where we are going to have to beg sprint and or HTC, to put S-OFF, or, somewhat more realistically, unlock the bootloader (or at least provide an RUU to downgrade?).
Anyway: Just discuss what you think about the plausibility of rooting the 2.3 release, and if we will ever see a free EVO. I am, sadly stuck on 2.3, as I didn't think about rooting, or know anything about it, until after I took the OTA .
Flame on! #johnnystorm
Is there a way to delete post instead of editing?
This isn't another one of those posts claiming to not be one of those posts about the locked bootloader that has been posted more than enough?

COULD IT BE......
@AlphaRevX and @unrevoked have come together to build something... Revolutionary. See you tonight! http://t.co/QUU6G1A"

Hey are u rooted on that thing? Oh no...... well sit back and hold yer breath like the REST OF US......
I don't think we're stuck at Spint's/HTC's mercy. We're just further down the priority list of the devs. That's fine, its the nature of technology. As STG posted, Alpharev and unrevoked are posting something tonight. That could be a universal GB crack (hope!) or it could be a rooted 3d/Sensation. Either way, OG Evo is moving up on the priority list. Its an old phone, but hardly forgotten.

HTC isn't helping much either, though they say that they are going to. The've announced that they are going to start sending out updates with the new unlocked boot-loaders in August, and the Evo 3D is third on the list so it'll be out later in the year. I haven't read anything about them sending out an unlocked boot-loader for the Evo 4G.
As was previously stated, not forgotten, but no doubt far down on the list of priorities.

If I recall HTC's statement correctly, they said the 3vo and the sensation would receive the updates first and then in September they would unlock phones that have recently been locked down...I believe the og evo is on that list.

If that "Something Revolutionary" is root for Evo Gingerbread, I will be voluntary slave to the devs for five years... Okay, maybe not, but Paypal donation, without question.
You guys are doing truly heroic work.
I still think it is obnoxious that Android phones (which ironically, is the "open" platform), have become more locked down. I am glad to see that HTC and other companies are starting to realize that this stuff is important. I think that it is at least a big step forward. I do believe HTC will follow through on their promise, at least for future phones. I don't think that they'd go back on their word. I'm just optimistic like that .
This "later today" thing is killing me. See; Now I am going to be on that page hitting F5 every couple minutes for the rest of the day .
Yea, yeah, I know: No ETAs.
Best of luck to all
