I'm done with Acer - Acer Iconia A500

My A500 is going back to Costco. This the 3rd one that GPS just sucks. Before the update I was getting form 4-10 invew and in use. They did say GPS will be fix in 3.1...I'm not getting a lock at all now. So F Acer.
I just came back from fry's...they have the Toshiba on display. I tether my nexus 1 and got a lock in 3sec and it's lighter then the Acer. A little bigger but lighter. Yes it's just going to be the 16GB but I have a 32GB SD.

if you dont like it, return it.
edit: i personally havent had a problem with gps. besides its not like im actually using it to navigate. but just a heads up, i will almost guarentee you that there will be something you dont like about the toshiba. and it will just continue. no one makes a perfect tablet, thats why there is still competition and not one company dominating. but good luck, hope its something that works out for you.

Seconded

Maybe it will have problems as lone as GPS work. I do use it for nav. It's replacing my carpc.
O I don't like the led on front of the Toshiba. So there u go.

No need in being a smart ass about it.

GPS is weak on the Acer. It bothers me too but 99.9% of time I am using maps I am on wifi and locations works fine so not total FUBAR.

I guess OP would have been better served by a Xoom.. with phone service capability.

And without any brand fanboi-ism here, I'd have to agree. The GPS on the Acer works great for me - as long as you're connected to the Internet. Which requires Wireless. Which kind of assumes you aren't driving. There are some "hacks" to help improve that which seem to work pretty well, but it's a workaround and not an out-of-box solution.
Yes GPS works without Internet, but not as well.
But, I think we can mostly agree the OP is doing a bit of trolling, intentionally or not...

I don't know if it would constitute trolling. A "troll" is someone who says something for the sole purpose of enraging someone else. I think he was just expressing rage he felt himself.
To be honest, I share his pain. I'm considering taking mine back and giving it a third go because of the shoddy GPS.
There is no question that Acer provides poor build construction; but you get what you pay for. The A500 is the cheapest of the "me too" tablets, and it shows. They cheaped out on certain parts to bring the price down. Though, they are also claiming to have sold over a million units, so I guess the strategy is working. In retrospect, I wonder how many of the million units got returned.
What irks me is the complete lack of support from Acer. I've been investigating the GPS issue for a while, and it seems as though Acer is aware of the issue and is now starting to rationalize it, which is never a good sign. I've seen people claim that Acer has told them that the GPS isn't meant to be used for navigation; I've seen people claim that Acer techs have told them outright that GPS doesn't exisit on this model. I've been personally told by Acer that I could send it back in, but it would be on my dime because fixing the GPS constitutes an "upgrade" from original functionality.
Acer is playing the "max units sold" game to try and gain brand recognition in a vain attempt to overtake the iPad, and hoping they don't lose too many customers in the process to defective units.
If you want superior build quality, iPad is second to none. Hopefully the up-coming android tablets give us some more options. Best of luck on whatever you choose.
Cheers,
-PW

In regards to the GPS I never noticed it before reading lots of posts here, then again I use my cell phone for that since that has constant internet connection.
Sorry for typos using A500 and holding newborn at the same time.
Good luck with the new tablet hope its everything you are looking for.

Seconded. Not very fun to try to use a 10 inch tablet for GPS - that's why I have my El cheapo Virgin Mobile samsung intercept for - 25$ a month, rooted, fits my car mount, provides a unlimited 3g hotspot for my a500

Which is why I really, really don't understand why folks are crying over below-average GPS performance on **WIFI ONLY** tablets.
And if you're using your phone as a wifi hotspot in conjunction with a 10" tablet--in your car--you might as well just use your damn phone as a GPS or get a 3G capable tablet.

Well there are apps such as CoPilot which just needs to have a GPS. Though it is a bit idiotic to use a 10" tablet as a navigator, it does not justify the malfunction of the GPS unit!
i.e. in Acer they build crap and QA just approve the crap and then we consumer help them out.
First of all it is not a cheap tablet, cheap to me means something in range of Chinese knock-offs.
Second to that, somebody here read warranty to me that we should accept what they produce since in warranty says everything is "AS-IS". Should consumers really buy crapware since brands says so?

Serious issues with HD2

Dataconnection!!!
Lack of auto rotation in App's
Lack of App's in general
Continually having to restart
Web Browsing just does not work
Poor response to touch!!
Just to name a few.
I wanted to love this phone. I spent a good month deciding what phone to get and this one seemed to fit the bill on paper. I have now had it for about two months and have wanted to smash it into a million pieces more times than I can remember. It has just got to the point that I'm putting it on ebay this afternoon.
I do think that the major flaw with this phone is Windows. Put Android on it and I am sure it would be amazing. For this reason a new HTC Desire is now on order.
Sorry to put this on here, but I need somewhere to vent my anger.
the only thing i hate about Leo..is lack of apps..and since the made it on wm 6.5..no devs will pay any serious attention at this platform..and android aint any better..
First I was so anti iphone..but now..I'm even thinking about switching..for some good games..most of the part..

anyway as i said the only thing is lack of apps..
compare the appstore to windows market..the second one is so empty..
HD2 is really one of the best phones ever..and its way better then ip..but..I love playing games so mush..and on ip there r some tight *** games..
And on WM 6.5 the only good game out there is zenonia..and it was ported from ip..

I have both an HD2 and an iPhone. HD2 is my work phone and the iPhone my private/games phone.
I do not have the problems on browsing, dataconnection or poor response on my HD2.
Some apps I installed did create those problems and I had to remove them.
There are lots of apps for the HD2 (though the number is decreasing since Microsoft decided to kill windows mobile) the problem is that there is not as much quality control as Apple imposes for the iphone and they are not easily accesible in a single appstore.
And I prefer the HD2 because it has a better screen

All of them are bull****.
There is a perfectly good auto rotation app.
If you need to restart that often, You must have a bad leo. Mine work(ed) fine, untill I broke it.
Web browsing works PERFECTLY. Its a tonne better than the Iphone browsing ever was! And with Wifi - Its just as good as a desktop brower.
Poor touch response? Never had that. It feels just like any other captive screen to me. Probably responds better than all other ones Ive owned.
Lack of apps? Well noone can say thats a lie. I miss the appstore so much. But Ive come to realise PSX on a mobile phone is better than any game the app store ever had.
I do miss little fun apps, that were usless though.
I really think your either a apple fan boy, or have a bad leo.

Lack of App's in general- If you did you're research on the phone you would know this, this is accross the whole WINMO estate, so not just the HD2, if you want shiny apps, you know where to go.
Continually having to restart- Yes, agreed when i was on stock rom i had to restart a lot but XDA had a lot of dedicatec chefs cooking roms for us where these issues do not happen
Web Browsing just does not work- I think you'll find it does, and perfectly well, give more details of your bad experience please

personally i'd rather buy an iphone as another phone just for games then change my precious for it!!
hd2 is sooo tight!
Dataconnection: no problems at all. Wifi and H/G3 connections work without any problems. Fast and very stable.
Lack of auto rotation in apps: Plenty of apps with auto rotation. If not, you can force auto rotation with a tool.
Lack of apps in general: most USEFUL apps are available. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I like the games (3D and puzzle) that are on the market. I don't need most of the useless games of the iphone. iphone has more free games, but the price of the phone is much higher so you will pay the apps anyway.
Restart: I have the phone for 3 months now, 2 restarts because of freezes and mainly because of tweaking.
Webbrowsing: best I've ever experienced on a mobile phone. The screen is perfect for this, and everything feels very smooth and works like a laptop. One of the main reasons why I bought this phone.
Poor respons to touch: I really don't understand this point. The screen is very responsive and fast.
I think you have a bad product. I'm a serious user of this phone and I never experienced one of the above mentioned problems.
Flash your phone with one of the custom roms from xda and stop complaining about the HD2 or go and buy an iPhone. There are tons of solutions here on this forum...My HD2 is stable as a rock, if I have a problem I search the forum instead of complaining and telling everybody how bad the HD2 is.

Voiding warrenty? Just flash to stock. Tmob havn't said a single thing about mine yet! even when I went into a shop with a clearly un-stock rom.

When did it become OK to release a phone that isnt ready for prime time?

Evo had problems, instinct had LOTS of problems, hell my touch pro 2 NEVER ran 100% right.
Now here I am with an Epic, where the gps doesnt work unless I reboot the phone, uploading a 1.2 mb picture takes entirely too long on 3g as well as the phone studders like heck while it's SLOWLY uploading AND to top it all off - it's looking for a signal 50% or more of the time that I'm in a FULL SIGNAL area.
My question is this:
When did this become acceptable in our society? Why are people not being fired over this?????
What MOD EDIT tester didn't notice that 3g uploads are capped? And did they NEVER EVEN TRY TO USE THE GPS after a night or day of the phone being on?
Coming from the touch pro 2 and touch diamond I was SO READY for the Epic to ROCK MY WORLD.
The sad thing is IT WOULD HAVE if I didn't have to deal with these little annoying issues.
Turning airplane mode on and off everyday so my battery will last 12 hours..which still isnt that good.. Rebooting the phone before I plan to use it for ANYTHING navigation related.
What a sour taste I have in my mouth. I know apologists will say "it hasn't even been out a month" well guess what, I work in IT and if I rolled out something new and it didn't work CORRECTLY on the first day, someone is getting in trouble, if I go home before it's fixed, I get fired.
It should be the same thing with the wireless phone industry.
/rant off.
as much as i enjoy my epic i must agree with you, but its not just the phone industry, hell look at video games took ms years to finally get the rrod under control, sony had its ylod problems too....
Dear god, I am sick and tired of seeing these stupid rants everyday.
Every phone is going to have a problem with it, nothing is perfect.
Complaining about it isn't going to magically make it all better.
If your having that many problems with it, then why not return it?

That's a great question and the answer is......because I have no alternative device like this with a keyboard.
Your attitude of "every phone is going to have a problem with it" is exactly WHY this whole situation exists in the first place. People are just OK with this type of thing happening.
Also - it's not just me having problems, the whole internet is FULL of epic owners with the same ****ty issues. All I'm saying is that EVERYTIME a phone is rolled out and **** DOESNT WORK - someone should be losing his or her job BECAUSE HE OR SHE DIDNT DO THEIR JOB!!

People can only do so much with the limited resources they have.
I am guessing your attitude of a phone is that is has to be perfect.
There is never going to be a phone that is perfect.
Sure, there are problems with this phone, dont you think samsung already knows about this and is trying to fix this?
I'm happy with the Epic apart from the fact it pulls power from the battery while plugged in causing it to take forever to charge if you using it heavily.

According to a sprint admin on the board they had no idea about this till we started reporting it. Why would samsung release a phone with horrible battery life and a crippled GPS if they knew about it? How did sprint testing NOT REALIZE that 3g doesn't go any faster then 150k.
No a phone doesn't have to be perfect, but these issues are DETRIMENTAL to how the phone works.
What's funny is while I was at the store they had plenty of Epics and not one EVO. I'm sitting there wondering why. I guess I know why now.
While I can be a LOT more patient with stuff, and thats because I am too trusting... I have been lately getting more and more aware that some things were overlooked with this phone.
I'm still hoping though, but I got screwed with the Instinct, from.. wait for it, Samsung, because that was supposed to be the first phone to challenge the iPhone and NOTHING, i mean NOTHING ever came out for it. That phone required reboot a year after it came out for some of the dumb issues, cause it wasn't ever updated, and then it was just flat out not really supported with apps like it was supposed to.
Then I got the Pre (diff company I know) but that was the next iPhone killer, and no apps (besides independent minor developing) for 6 months, while Palm and Sprint sat on their asses deciding to not allow developers to work on the Pre for that time for no reason. Result was after a good launch, people got tired and new phones started coming in.
Now this phone has only been out less than 3 weeks and already got an update, which feels to me that it did help the battery some while using 3G, but I gotta test it out some more. I'll be patient with this one, but it's the last device I get and hang on to if it has certain issues from the get go, because you're right j3ff, I think that all the time too, that people that are cool with a product that is mediocre from the get go is the reason why the US has so many crappy things out before they should be, it's also why Europe and Asia are 3 - 5 years ahead in diff tech areas (devices or services).

The popularity of the evo has absolutely nothing to do with the issues that the epic has.

I have to admit, my phone does have some problems with it.
But I deal with them. By far this is one of the best phones I've ever had.
Every one who buys the epic right aways does beta testing for them. They know it. This is real world testing for them. Just have to deal with it. Yeah it sucks
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yea I have to agree that the Evo being constantly sold out has nothing to do with the Epic.. What it is, is that Samsung makes the HTC Evo screens. And with them having other devices to make screens for, they only have so many to go around extra for the Evo, especially since its a slightly bigger than normal screen. This means, whenever Samsung decides to toss some screens HTCs way, they do, otherwise their own devices are a priority. And since Samsung makes the Epic AND the S-AMOLED screens there's no shortage of screens for their own device, hence a lot more Epics on hand. I am surprised that HTC didn't go for the S-Amoled screen too, I think that would have turned the tide for some owners.

Sure it's a good phone, but phones up to THREE OR FOUR years OLDER both upload FASTER then the epic and have a full fledged working gps.
Also - I did call samsung and sprint, just like I hope all others will, there is NO REASON to just lay down and "dont worry" about major flaws in a flagship device.

1: I do not pay major amounts of money, I got my Epic as a replacement for my broken HTC Evo.
2:I do not recall the older phones having a GPS four years ago.
Your logic is flawed.
This topic largely turned into what I expected it to...
Yes, Americans are completely willing to deal with broken crap as long as they can tie some fanboy fervor to it. Seriously, all you people in here berating OP here because he doesn't really LIKE the fact that he pays top dollar to beta test things need to grow the hell up. There was a topic like this on the Sprint forums where one particular poster was defending the 150kbps upload cap because he claims to never need to upload anything. It doesn't matter if YOU care about the issue, all that matters is that its there and that it happens to be a couple of issues that should not make it out of beta testing.
Geez, I thought the Xbox 360 was the end of this acceptance of unacceptably broken crap.

It really is crazy to me. Like i said at my job, if stuff doesn't work I don't go home, EVER. Doesn't matter what it is. How can a big company like Samsung let their designers and people who actually give life to the phone leave and go home if the day before they ship them to sprint everything isn't at least CLOSE to 100%
I bought a pocket PC 6700 like 5 years ago, had Naviagtion, and before that I had a phone that had Navigation I believe too. So your problem was the iPhone didn't have, not devices not having GPS

Lol, you mean the original iPhone that failed to ship with 3G support at a time when entry level Nokia's had 3G? The iPhone hasn't been the best phone shipped that year for any of its releases. That gentleman said HIGH end.

Stood next to a dude who also thought of getting a Xoom...

Assuming there is sufficient advantage to waiting.
Waiting by itself doesn't qualify having patience. Sometimes it means you don't understand the choice. The only real "disadvantage" in buying the Xoom now is the price. What about the Samsung tablet appeals to you more? Or was this purely about the Xoom?

Ha, was laughing at that too.
Am I missing something. What on earth makes the tablet by Samsung any better than one by motorola unless you are a homunculus incapable of holding a 1.6lb device but can hold a 1.3?
In all seriousness though, besides aestethics and brand preference I don't see the draw. I am seriously looking googling to try and find the big deal. Moto is a proven OEM in the Android world, and the XOOM is wide open and soon to be 4G capable. I see that the 10.1 is supposed to be HSPA 21+mbps so I am assuming T-Mo's fake 4G?
It seems it has a better rear camera, higher resolution video, optional capacities, and a proximity sensor(did they forget this isn't a phone) in the THINGS THE XOOM DON'T category.
It has a single instead of dual led flash, no new data tech, no HDMI, no barometer(hmmm someone tell me wtf a barometer is for) no external memory(which I will be using to put music on my tablet when I get a deal on a 32gb microsd, or so I tell myself), no ambient light sensor(I don't like autobrightness but I see the utility) in the THINGS THE XOOM DOES category.
Options are good but I don't get the point of this pointless thread .

I did not mention in my first post that I also bought the Xoom at Motorola for 25% off and I already have the UPS tracking number and it will be delivered this coming Monday. My bank statement has shown that the charge is complete.
So the price is not really the issue here.
I will not open my Xoom on Monday when I received it but will wait for March 22 to decide.
Biggest advantages of the Samsung tablet are the following:
1. Lighter weight
2. Most likely a better screen (brighter/better contrast). You look at the screen 100% of the time when you use a tablet (unless you just listen to music) so this is very important.
Big disadvantage
1. May not be rootable
Like I mentioned, you don't seem to understand the choice if those are your only disadvantages. I get that you're waiting, I just find your attitude funny.

Your a better man than me. Me, personally I will never buy another samsung product. What shortcomings does the Xoom have that the 10.1 won't have? From what I have read the 10.1 is inferior spec wise to the Xoom althoigh they are very close.

Risky flash process is off-putting. I expect we'll see much more activity once it is possible to flash a recovery with less risk of ending up with a hundred dollar paperweight. Plus the OUYA people promised an open console and many people have been disgusted enough to have avoided the console altogether due to the horror that customer relations have proven to be.

I am definitely pissed about certain things that could have been handled alot better (Like right now I'm forcing myself to not go into examples). But I think we need to move on. I don't think any device has ever really had a lot of things going on when you first get them. Nope. Not going to happen. The OUYA was billed as an open console and what has been delivered to us paying customers has been anything but open. I will not be quiet, I will not get over it, nor will I go away.
If the OUYA fails it will be because of bitterness by early adopters like myself who discovered we had been sold a bill of goods and are educating everyone else we know on what a horrible deal the OUYA is as a result.

This one could have. It was going to be different--"So begins the revolution", remember? If the OUYA team had actually delivered something open they could have had an instant community of developers and users springing up around the device--instead people are getting increasingly vocal about bugs, the lack of transparency and a lack of a true open console. These people are not going to go away.
At the current rate things are going I highly doubt the OUYA will see its third hardware revision. There might be a poorly sold second edition but there will be no third version because the poor sales of the second release will kill the company. If it happens it will be their own fault for not fulfilling their promises to their customers.

Let me make it easy for any developers looking in. I have already bought three OUYA games and have been adding several others to a mental list of games I'd like to purchase in the near future, but I absolutely refuse to buy any more games until the OUYA team fixes the USB storage bugs. I will not buy a single game from this time forward until things change.

I loved my Ouya at first, rooted , cmw, emulators, side loading. But overscan killed me to death. I don't want to use this on my 42 inch I want It on my 32 inch Samsung gaming tv. lets face it the nexus 7 delivers what ouya can't, hdmi out open source and the ability to take it on the go as a fabulous tablet to. but it's double the price. I returned mine and if ouya doesn't get it's stuff in order this thing will be a dud.I have Roku, Chromecast, 2 Nexus 7's and every current gen console. we have steambox on the way, Xbox one, Ps4 and more coming. Ouya is going to be eaten alive if it doesn't open up the pandoras box and let the fun out.

Mine does have this annoying touch problems, and it's really annoying. Yours fine? Good, please don't disrespect others complaint if yours "fine".
This is the kind of thing I don't understand, someone does a thread of the issue/news on it and suddenly comes people with their "fine" product and post how "fine" theirs are or/and that they don't care.
If your Nexus is "fine", then no need to read about it, enjoy it, but there are a lot of us who got a bad unit, I can't return it because it started after the 15 days of return warranty, so I'm stuck with it.

Yup, and the 15 day return period is a joke as well.
All defects should be covered by a free replacement warranty equal to the product warranty.....NOT REPAIR...and the customer should not pay a dime for shipping.
At least one year......after the way Google has handled this they should extend the free replacement warranty to 3 years. (Yeah right)

I'm not sure if 7 people in that thread is really Google taking a beating. Also, it really isn't Google's problem. It is Asus'. How many tablets were sold vs how many have the issue. I got mine on launch day and no issue. I've had to send a few different items back to Asus in the past and had to pay shipping every time, but then again, $7 for shipping vs having to buy a new item is ok in my eyes. Yup.
My touchscreen was mildly effected also. Mostly the missing touch problem when not holding the device (ie: sitting on a table or such).
Rooted using the forum tutorials, installed sfhub's ts10 update and the touchscreen works fine now. No skips, no missing or ghost touches.
For the record, I've only been using android for about 2 weeks now so it's not that hard to learn how to apply the fix that worked on mine.
Now, should an end user have to do you this to their device? Nope, it should come this way. For mine it was such an easy fix, it would seem they have no excuse for not designing the software properly in the first place.
I quite like the rest of the devices features (ie: nice screen, battery life, speed, just right size for book reading and fitting in my coat pocket, etc) and it's quickly becoming a favorite device of mine.
As to those saying thiers works fine, I think they are valid comments. Not all the devices are effected and as is normal with human behavior, those that feel "screwed" are often the ones who are the loudest. Not that they're not justified in being upset with getting a "broken" product, they are.
But it is equally valuable to hear from those that get products that work.
How else are we going to know if there are more bad than good if we don't also hear from "the good"?

You're absolutely right: I don't make the rules and you can bring it up if you want to. I was simply suggesting that life and death disease analogies can always offend Someone and might be a little overboard on an Android forum.
You would need to replace so with and. He was making two separate points and connecting with the word and, while you are expressing cause-effect with so (should be used in conclusion). Though due to ambiguity I could be completely wrong. You brought up logic. I just thought it would be easier for two rational human beings to get to the same spot.
And my G2 screen is wonkier than my Nexus 7. Turning it off and back on seems to solve it though.
Guys, let's not argue about whether what's important to one is also important to you. Everyone has their own opinion. It looks like enough people are upset about the issues, and that is a fact.
I am one of those people. After devs here on XDA put together near perfect AOSP roms for my ThunderBolt, I expected stuff coming out of Google directly to be rock solid. N7 is my first Nexus device, and I am quite disappointed with regular random reboots that I still have, as well as intermittent touch screen issues. For example, I can't play Subway Surfers since N7 keeps ignoring some portion of screen touches (leading me to crash lol).
My HTC DNA, however, is rock solid on the stock rom. Why can't a Nexus device be the same? People typically complain of manufacturers adding stuff to android that makes it worse. Well, I am not so ready to say that now. As far as I am concerned, HTC is doing a better job with their devices than Google.
PS, TB was buggy when it came out, but all the bugs were subsequently fixed, even on Verizon!
