Stood next to a dude who also thought of getting a Xoom... - Xoom General

...and after discussing about the advantages and disadvantages of the Xoom, we finally left the store with the same thought of waiting for the Samsung 10.1 tablet.
What's the point of this thread????....
Patience is virtue.

I guess you don't mind the lack of an SD card slot...
Oh, wait.

Nor external ports...

There is a .999999% that it may have the SD card slot. I am willing to wait until March 22 to find out.

Assuming there is sufficient advantage to waiting.
Waiting by itself doesn't qualify having patience. Sometimes it means you don't understand the choice. The only real "disadvantage" in buying the Xoom now is the price. What about the Samsung tablet appeals to you more? Or was this purely about the Xoom?

Ha, was laughing at that too.

Am I missing something. What on earth makes the tablet by Samsung any better than one by motorola unless you are a homunculus incapable of holding a 1.6lb device but can hold a 1.3?
In all seriousness though, besides aestethics and brand preference I don't see the draw. I am seriously looking googling to try and find the big deal. Moto is a proven OEM in the Android world, and the XOOM is wide open and soon to be 4G capable. I see that the 10.1 is supposed to be HSPA 21+mbps so I am assuming T-Mo's fake 4G?
It seems it has a better rear camera, higher resolution video, optional capacities, and a proximity sensor(did they forget this isn't a phone) in the THINGS THE XOOM DON'T category.
It has a single instead of dual led flash, no new data tech, no HDMI, no barometer(hmmm someone tell me wtf a barometer is for) no external memory(which I will be using to put music on my tablet when I get a deal on a 32gb microsd, or so I tell myself), no ambient light sensor(I don't like autobrightness but I see the utility) in the THINGS THE XOOM DOES category.
Options are good but I don't get the point of this pointless thread .

I did not mention in my first post that I also bought the Xoom at Motorola for 25% off and I already have the UPS tracking number and it will be delivered this coming Monday. My bank statement has shown that the charge is complete.
So the price is not really the issue here.
I will not open my Xoom on Monday when I received it but will wait for March 22 to decide.
Biggest advantages of the Samsung tablet are the following:
1. Lighter weight
2. Most likely a better screen (brighter/better contrast). You look at the screen 100% of the time when you use a tablet (unless you just listen to music) so this is very important.
Big disadvantage
1. May not be rootable

Like I mentioned, you don't seem to understand the choice if those are your only disadvantages. I get that you're waiting, I just find your attitude funny.

Your a better man than me. Me, personally I will never buy another samsung product. What shortcomings does the Xoom have that the 10.1 won't have? From what I have read the 10.1 is inferior spec wise to the Xoom althoigh they are very close.

Thats exactly what I was thinking plus you left one out. Samsung will never update it they will just have another come out in four months and make you pay for that. I will never buy samsung ever. Horrible company that forces a ****ty skin on its users and takes away uogrades making promises and never coming through, they care for nothing more than your money and i will leave you.

Samsung updated their phones in Europe
I am also waiting that March 22, but mainly for the 8.9" version.
Hope it will have better screen and more.

[Q] ROOT?

I love my Evo. Main reason? Personalization, flashing custom roms, flashing fonts, etc. My knowledge of development ain't that great though and I'm wondering from those "in the know": Do you think we'll access root and be able to flash custom roms?
For me, this is the best tablet b/c it runs android. I don't mind the price, I just want to be able to do what I want to the device Opinions?
I wouldn't doubt it. In fact, I expect it. I don't think there are any android devices that haven't been rooted. Just have to give it time once it's released.

Whats the deal with the locked bootloader on some Moto devices? I hear the term but I'm not familiar with what it means (EVO owner). I assumed it had to do with not being able flash ROM's and/or root. Can anybody explain?

That's about all it is. They shut down any access to the loader which means you can get around to install anything. Most of motos new phones are this way. Its a kick in the nards but it protects their hardware from stuff like overclocking and burning out stuff. And of course the occasional brick.
I hate it but I see the point. And I can see the xoom being locked....little expensive for them to have to keep taking back because a new rooter f'ed theirs up.
Hmmm. Though I don't see custom ROMs being as necessary, that actually gives me a touch of pause. I don't like to think that the life of the device can't be extended if Motorola created a XOOM 2 or something.

I don't think the hardware spec as is will get outdated anytime soon.
Well..outdated yes, regress into unusable for web, video and apps.. certainly not.
The device per the data sheet will still run things quite well as we know them now for a very long time.
Only thing yet to be really proven is how teg2 can handle intensive 3d functions in 'real world' scenarios.. and if you think Crysis will be better played on a tablet I have a bridge for sale.

I know the hardware won't be outdated, I'm talking about all the obsolete android phones because their OEMs abandoned them and they never got FroYo. I think if it ends up being locked down I might have to utilize Best Buy's new return policy on the 28th day.
The Atrix has already been rooted:

I wouldn't be shock if Motorola backs off the boot loader block. Pretty funny huh. I was talking to the guys in best buy mobile and they claimed it was verizon that was locking down the boot loaders. Of course these are the same guys who were shocked when I told them I had a OC nook color w/ froyo and honeycomb.

It just makes me laugh when I talk to people like that. Being an electronics technician I do it sometimes just to see what chunks of stupid come out of their mouths.
Since the Xoom is intended to be the reference development tablet platform by Google, it should be easy to root and has an easy to unlock bootloader, just like the Nexus One and Nexus S.
That being said, Motorola is Motorola... so they may do their usual Motorola thing and encrypt everything up. But I think the chance that the Xoom is easy to mess around with is pretty high.

Same with me. Infact im not even sure im going to get the damn thing. They were so unorganized and unprepared. I NEVER go on websites and do the ratings but for this i did. It was a horrible experience trying to get this thing pre ordered. 3 of the techs had to talk to each other to figure out what i was asking for. I didnt think the statement "i would like to pre order the motorola xoom" was all that confusing. I never shop at best buy but being as inpatient as i am i took the risk to get my hands on this thing as fast as possible. I just hope i get a call once they come in. As it looked im going to be the only call they have to make.
Did anyone else get a copy of their preorder or just a receipt?

Also praying for no locked bootloader. Hoping to be rooted within the first few days
All I got was the receipt and the gift card as well. Got to our BB ~1300 to place the order and was the first to actually place an order, as opposed to people asking questions about it. Course our BB is in a town of ~50,000 (metro area ~150,000) so I was a little concerned they would even get any in for Thursday, they say they are indeed due in this week.
Did see the preorder paperwork she filled out.
Like above, they didn't know what they were looking for. The girl found it without too much wait though.

I guess the "Google Device Experience" is out the window.
My guess is Google and moto want to find a more elegant solution than mounting it inside the sdcard mount point.
I'm 100% certain someone could get the sdcard working now if we could get the kernel source with the driver.

The going theory is that, because Motorola piggybacked the SD Card slot onto the SIM slot, they need to wait for proprietary drivers to be ready.
Considering the WiFi-only model also has the SIM slot, I'm guessing there's some truth to this.

The sdcard slot is just another piece of hardware that can be mounted as storage anywhere. The issue isn't mounting the storage, but where and how to integrate it so that applications can use it. Simply mounting the storage as a folder under the sdcard is frankly confusing to the average user who doesn't even have a file manager.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
And this concerns me a bit re: Asus. If they've performed some hack to get the SD card slot to work (and notice the "if" there), then I'm not sure if they're the route I want to go. If this isn't how Google's planning on implementing SD card storage into Honeycomb going forward (again, "if"), then how will Asus realign with Honeycomb once official support is provided?
And, what else have they hacked to enable support of all their other stuff? How much should I trust Asus to know what they're doing here? How much experience does Asus have with Android to be doing things like this?
All questions that make me reconsider my thinking that I might return my Xoom in favor of the Asus...
Xoom has mapped the internal memory as an SDCard so theoretically the Xoom will need to have maping for 2 SDCards.
Could this have anything to do with the problem?

This.
I've never tried it but I am doubting that you can mount to different devices to the same point, and call them the same thing. Especially since one of them won't always be there - if it was a 'raid' it might be a little different, but I think that would be a weird way of doing things too.....
Too many moving targets.

I agree, Motorola is running a business. A business is competitive. If someone solves a problem before you, you lose customers. Sounds like ASUS has done that, and I appreciate the OP for letting us know that.
And as for the person above who recommended closing this thread, why would you do that? It provides new information, not just complaints.

Do not think this would be the problem since my Atrix phone has 16gb internal and my 8gb card in the sd card slot. Of course the Atrix calls them both the media area and when you move apps the phone only has the option to move apps to the media area. So of course they all go to the internal memory and not the card. I can manually move things like music and videos to the card but all the apps seem to want to fill up the internal mem first then I guess it will start adding them to the sd card once the internal fills up. They really need to give the app manager the option to move to either locations.
I think we need a new Topic section under Xoom labeled buyers remorse. These people need a place to complain elsewhere.

YOU knew the slot would NOT function. MOTO NEVER stated to the public when it would be. had they said "slot will be enabled march12th" or some such and it didnt, then heck yeah we all have a right to get on the soap box.
however, moto did not put out a release date. if you ever heard of one it was rumor.
yelling, complaining here and opening up multiple threads on the same subject falls on deaf ears at moto. call them up, go to their support forums. this is a technical forum on the gadget, not a place to vent.
you/we ALL knew the flash support, slot and LTE would not be turned on at launch. some of us early adopters went ahead and purchased anyway.. took a gamble that everything would be enabled in two weeks or so. your gamble didn't bear much fruit save the flash support.
you had 30 days (longer at costco) to demo/try the unit until you had to return. you continued to gamble. you lost now you want to complain endlessly about it?

Does this mean that the fact the XOOM currently advertised in the UK showing off all its specs (including microSD support) will actually have a working SD card when I get it next week?
Because if not, it sure as hell is Motorola's fault. Sure I know there are non-working SD slots cause I read XDA but non of the adverts for the UK XOOM mention anywhere that it won't work.
We'll see just how pissed we need to be with them next week when we finally get our hands on these.

I'm not sure that its good business policy on the part of Motorola to make customers GAMBLE when they purchase their products.
And a majority of us are STILL within our return window. So if what you say about our waiting too long and losing our gamble is true, then are you advocating a mass return by everyone who is still unhappy, otherwise we wil be guilty of having made in your words: "a poor business decision"?
Personally I love my XOOM and have no intention of returning it. Guess I won my gamble and made a good business decision!
ASUS just released their Transformer kernel source. It could surely clue the Xoom kernel developers in as to what ASUS has done to make this work for that device. If there are proprietary drivers involved to get it working on the Xoom due to hardware differences, then that's another story.

I have a feeling that Moto intends to implement it differently on the XOOM, which is why theyre waiting on it. I think they want to take advantage of the SD as real storage instead of just external. I may be mistaken though.

More seriously, you seem like a patient guy, so wait three weeks and the user reviews will pop up all over the place.
Right now, the most worrisome observation seems to be the lack of sd card, and this.
they cut the cost down by taking out the rear camera, sd slot, and MHL/HDMI out.
sd slot can be fixed with root and an OTG cable, but if your fine with losing the other two, then yes it's worth it for the price.
i preorderd a 16GB one and even though i'm really upset at the lack of MHL/HDMI, i'm just gonna have to deal with it.

Those who have used Nexus devices in the past, they probably knew there will be no SD card (Besides if you go with the 16gb model, you should have plenty!). I am yet to read any post which warrants a need for expandable memory.

I suspect a lemon (GOOG will replace the device). AnandTech of all reviewers would have caught this if really happening

Knowing it doesn't make the sting any better. In either case, that is something to watch out for.

It varies depending on usage, of course, but here's mine.
Yes, 16gb should be enough for me. And also I agree that the issue with screen flicker will be fixed if that certain model isn't a fluke. I am really excited to see this device if it's as good as claimed. I'll order mine now then. Hope everyone else enjoys theirs.

I think its pure FUD. Having a pure Google experience on a GOOG branded device is *huge* - really no use of nit picking on small "good to have" items none of which are a real deal breakers (I for one really don't think expandable memory is an issue at all, HDMI may be). Being early adopters of anything GOOG strives to achieve is the real deal - GOOG leads from the front the open handset alliance, having a device running an open source software while collaborating with so many device partners is huge - As Linus pointed out, we will be in an amazing state of the world 4-5 years down the line with Android and hopefully we would have cleaned up all the stubborn device partners.
It varies depending on usage, of course, but here's mine.

Been there, done that, I have so many unused micro SD lying around. Mostly use expandable storage as a backup solution, mirroring what I need from a neatly maintained catalogue on which ever device I need (unless you want to lug around your complete collection, 75% of which you will never listen - or for that matter will have ever the time to listen.

This is true, but the problem is: you don't know which is the 75% beforehand!
You sound like you have a very large collection, that requires multiple sd cards to even fit in. I don't need quite that much. But the fact remains that 16GB is still not enough for all the 1GB games, music, and videos.
Here is a review: http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/nexus-7-review/
Looks like its worth it. Just pre-ordered my 16GB

Omitting the sd slot was not a cost related decision, at least not directly.

Risky flash process is off-putting. I expect we'll see much more activity once it is possible to flash a recovery with less risk of ending up with a hundred dollar paperweight. Plus the OUYA people promised an open console and many people have been disgusted enough to have avoided the console altogether due to the horror that customer relations have proven to be.

There's also (understandably) more interest in phones and tablets that already have momentum. I won't touch my OUYA until I go back to school where I have an HDTV that won't give me a headache, so that's why I'm basically tuned out here. That, and all the people raging in this forum.

I am definitely pissed about certain things that could have been handled alot better (Like right now I'm forcing myself to not go into examples). But I think we need to move on. I don't think any device has ever really had a lot of things going on when you first get them. Really if I would have read some of this stuff before hand I would have still got it but the average person might not and there could be a bad ass developer right now weighing out whether or not he should get this thing and it's not looking good. Nope. Not going to happen. The OUYA was billed as an open console and what has been delivered to us paying customers has been anything but open. I will not be quiet, I will not get over it, nor will I go away.
If the OUYA fails it will be because of bitterness by early adopters like myself who discovered we had been sold a bill of goods and are educating everyone else we know on what a horrible deal the OUYA is as a result.

This one could have. It was going to be different--"So begins the revolution", remember? If the OUYA team had actually delivered something open they could have had an instant community of developers and users springing up around the device--instead people are getting increasingly vocal about bugs, the lack of transparency and a lack of a true open console. These people are not going to go away.
At the current rate things are going I highly doubt the OUYA will see its third hardware revision. There might be a poorly sold second edition but there will be no third version because the poor sales of the second release will kill the company. If it happens it will be their own fault for not fulfilling their promises to their customers.

If I could do it all over again, I'd have not purchased the OUYA. I'd probably have investigated some of the more interesting Android\Linux arm boards coming out in a bid to roll my own game\media center box.

Let me make it easy for any developers looking in. I have already bought three OUYA games and have been adding several others to a mental list of games I'd like to purchase in the near future, but I absolutely refuse to buy any more games until the OUYA team fixes the USB storage bugs. I will not buy a single game from this time forward until things change.
--bornagainpenguin
I loved my Ouya at first, rooted , cmw, emulators, side loading. But overscan killed me to death. I don't want to use this on my 42 inch I want It on my 32 inch Samsung gaming tv. lets face it the nexus 7 delivers what ouya can't, hdmi out open source and the ability to take it on the go as a fabulous tablet to. but it's double the price. I returned mine and if ouya doesn't get it's stuff in order this thing will be a dud.I have Roku, Chromecast, 2 Nexus 7's and every current gen console. we have steambox on the way, Xbox one, Ps4 and more coming. Ouya is going to be eaten alive if it doesn't open up the pandoras box and let the fun out.

Samsung galaxy light (cheap lte on tmobile USA)

I have not seen much about this phone. It's a cheap ( no exact price yet) small sized phone to test out tmobile's lte if you want to think about switching away from big V like me.

1.4ghz Quad core with 1GB system memory and 8GB internal storage. It also has an 1800 mah battery and microsd.

Just noticed, among the features listed on hsn.com is something called "secure boot." Why does that sound like something I don't want? And they mention it as if it's a good thing.

Now $149. I'd grab it if I could root it. Zero development on this device and this is the only thread even discussing it. Shame but not surprising. You're almost better off to get an old phone that has plenty of options than a new one with none.
Sounds very interesting. I hope it will be released in Europe soon too.
I've read that that it reaches an antutu score around ~17000+. First an only 4'' phone with a quad core at the moment.!
But, does anybody know if it has a light sensor to adjust the brightness automatically?
Lol some guy wanted to trade me the Light for my One S...
Seeing that its pretty...new and no dev'ment yet, its a no.
Thats the same exact reason I got rid of my ol Boost Mobile LG Venice.
Besides, I'm not a fan of mediocre carrier service.
It sounds appealing though, i mean 1gb ram tied in with quad core, clocked at 1.4GHz not bad.
But its using TFT screen technology sized at 4 inches, a 5mp cam and a 0.3mp front. What sort of odd combo is that?
At least they should have given it an AMOLED then maybe the miniature screen would make some sense.
If you ask me, its like a merged Galaxy Prevail and a Galaxy S. Good for those who want something cheap yet preformance
worthy (I guess) but for a quad core device, ratings for it on many review sites are depressingly low. Hey at least it
has NFC, but still all that preformance on a TFT screen will make playing games feel like your on an older device.
I think the screen alone was a let down for me.
It does not make my list, nor capture my attention. My guess is, NAY.
I just got this phone. Any clue how to root it? I don't want to brick it following the s4 method.
Does anyone know how to network unlock this phone?
I just got this phone before leaving on vacations and can't seem to find a way to network unlock it so that I can use it outside the U.S.
I have tried all popular unlocking methods for S3's and S4's but none seems to work.
There is another thread about rooting this phone, but noone has figured out how to do it, just yet. I guess the new kernel is causing some issues. Anyway, the other thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2539232 I will be picking this phone up as soon as I am able. The small size and the quad core and the speed is also what I have read. As I am not a gamer, the screen is fine. LTE and NFC are features I would use. It's like Samsung figured out that if a user isn't gaming, a big high-end screen isn't as important as speed of connectivity. The gamers have the S4. The rest of us get the Light.

There is one. Stock, but debloated and optimized. I have not tried it myself yet, as I don't have a 2nd phone in case things go awry, But it looks very promising.

He also said he's going to attempt a Cyanogenmod 11 port. And if you excuse the archaic vernacular, that would be the bees' knees.
FYI, you can get the Galaxy Light brand new from T-Mobile for $100 right now.

Mine is rooted stock and I agree, Lightwave looks nice. The price at t-mobile just came down and I suspect Samsung will be ending the Light and releasing something of lower quality. You can't beat 4 bucks a month. Snap it up while you can.

So I was going to try the LightWave ROM but I have some concerns... Is this going to lock my SIM out, and keep me from accessing my network? Because,I also do not have a second phone to goof off with this one, and if I brick (or worse, get locked out of the data network)I'm screwed. So does anyone know if this locks out T-Mobile's network? Thanks in advance!
On an irrelevant side note, if anyone is using a stock (w/root) ROM and are tired of TouchWiz, I actually figured out how to dump it! There is an app in the Google Play store called "System app remover (ROOT)" and all i did was looked for touchwiz in the app and deleted it. Sorry for rambling.

I can't guarantee you won't brick your phone. Nobody can guarantee anything when you start flashing things. Once you have TWRP though, it's really hard to screw things up irreparably.

That's dangerous. I wouldn't recommend doing that, but if you must, always do backups first.
