Some questions before I buy... - Xperia Play General

1. Whats it like as a wireless hotspot, my Galaxy S2 is flaky at best with lots of dropouts?
2. Can it play avi files out of the box, and if not, whats playback like in Moboplayer, any sync issues?
3. What sort of games are currently available in the PS store?
4. Hows the camera?
5. Has anyone loaded Google Music and streamed their music?
Thanks all!!

This is just personal experience, but YMMV.
1. Wireless hotspot has worked great for me. I hook my iPad up to it when I'm at my grandparent's house and there's never any loss of connection. That's even on the awful Kentucky EDGE network, too.
2. I can't really help there because I never play those types of videos.
3. The PS store? If you mean the Playstation Pocket app, if you're in America (and possibly Canada), nothing. All you gots is Crash Bandicoot. FPSE is better for PS1 emulation, anyway, if that's what you're looking for. A lot of people get their games from Gameloft.
4. The camera is pretty decent. It's better than the camera on my old Desire HD that I sold. It would be better with different software (it's the AOSP app), so download Vignette or Camera 360 if you want better pictures. On this subject, the FFC looks black and white unless you're in good light.
5. I have and it worked fine on said slow network. The speaker is really loud, too.
adb shove iPad2post.apk to /forum/thread

2. The Stock Media Play can not play .avi straight out the box.....BUT......all you need to do is download a better media player and it will work straight out the box.
MoboPlayer is my recomendation to you. It plays everything i have thrown at it so far.
3. The actual Playstation games are not worth buying at all imo. Just download FPSE and get all your PS games on the emulator. (leglally you need to own the games before you download them, blah blah technical blah blah).
The Xperia Play games from Gameloft and a few other devs are quite decent quality. I love Gameloft games. Some people do not though. Remember this is a phone first and foremost. Not a dedicated games console.
4. Camera is OK. 5MP is decent. Not amazing, but clear enough to have them pictures full blown on your PC monitor without seeing many pixels.
The video recording is ok too. Not 720p, but not far off, it takes a keen eye to tell the difference.

2. Yes, Moboplayer works great. You'll have no issues playing standard def content, and in some cases 720p works too.
3. Very few, Crash bandicoot, midevil, and jet moto or something along those lines, haven't used it in a while. I used fpse and play the games I want to play (Final Fantasy VII in my case) I also use it for Super nintendo, nintendo, gameboy, and N64.
4. Fine for a cell camera. Not as good as the more camera oriented cyber-shot phones, but it holds it's own. Also the shoulder buttons make it easy to tak pictures compared to touch screen shutter.
As stated this phone has the loudest speakers out of any phones I've seen. It has two very nice cell phone speakers rather than the standard one, so everything from ring tones to games are plenty loud. They also have extremely good frequency response for cell phone speakers. Music, games, videos, everything sounds "fuller" on the Play compared to other phones.

Thanks all for the great answers.
Overall I just want to make sure I can load Google Music app despite being in the UK and that there aren't audio sync issues with avi files like some phones i've tried.

Reports are flooding in that Google has extended invites to its cloud-based music streaming service for residents of the UK. The buzz over Google Music has been building since it launched in the US following Google I/O.
In order to enjoy the music-streaming goodness that is Google Music Beta , you’ll need a Nexus S running Android 2.3.4. Users who fit the bill will be greeted with a self-install notification following the completion of the sign up on Google’s website.

Yeah i've installed the US version of music before in the UK by grabbing the apk from Modaco or using Market Access (through root).

If you're addicted to flashing ROM's, don't get it. I only got one because I traded my Inspire for it.
The game buttons are the selling point. I personally missed development going on...so my mom needed a phone with a SAMOLED so I got a Nexus S for her. :-D

Very much so. It won't even play the audio on fmv's. But audio in game play is pretty solid considering how most games are choppy. Same for tactics.

Is the sound problem the emulators fault or our phones?
Like how much better can the emulator get.
All my questions ultimately lead to wanting to know how possible a PSP and Sega Dream cast / SegaSaturn/Sega Genesis emulator are.
Well the n64 emulater is on the way. When I had my g1 snes games had the sound issue. Then an update fixed it. Due to the fact that are phones are the most powerful android devices for gaming. I'm less inclined to believe its our galaxies. With this kick ass gpu and all.

video playback

i know this has been discussed but i think that it is freaking ridiculous that we cant play all video types on the so called worlds most powerful smartphone. it should play all formats stock
Okay. So did you have a question like, "Does anybody know of an app that will play ___ video format"? Were optimizing our devices here at XDA, not complaining about them.
I agree....thus I have installed arcMedia 4 my mkv's. Seems pretty good. Plays my 720p copies quite nice.....however...thru wehtop on a 42" with webtop mob the playback is slightly stuttered from time to time....still tolerable to me though.

Not rooting because of Google Movies

It's been rumored that rooted devices will not have access to rent/buy movies using Google's new Movie service.
Am I the only one holding back on rooting my device because of this? I tried thinking about it yesterday, and I do not know of any legitimate way to download a movie (legally - paid) and transfer to watch on my Tab. More to the point, I'd rather just rent at $5 than buy at $15.
I've been a rooter since I had a G1 and was always a proponent of rooting, but I don't want to lose what I feel is a key feature of a tablet -- the ability to watch movies.
I know that's not the case as of now .. I have the new market on my Fascinate .. rooted and can download movies and books like a champ. Maybe its something they will fix later . But isn't the case as of now .

My 10.1 is not rooted, and the Google Video app doesn't show up in the market. When I go to the web I can find the app, but my Samsung shows up grayed out and the market claims the device is not compatible with the Video App. I've got it on my Asus Transformer and Acer Iconia tablet though. All three live in the U.S. with me. Anyone have a clue? Maybe a direct download of the video app?
I can confirm that movie playback is indeed prohibited when SU is discovered. I can also confirm that the work around listed previously, er, works.
iTunes it isn't, but it is a legit way of getting media on an Android device. Much better than Samsung's implementation.
I'm one of those odd people who will hack their device on a whim, but won't download illegal media. If I'm going to watch something, I'll rent or buy it.
If Google closes the work around and I have to choose between root and movies, root wins. No contest

Now that we have 2.2, what are some killer apps I need?

I mean solely for Android 2.2+. I've already gotten Netflix, Crackle (sadly, doesn't work, the sound goes really, really slow) and a few games I got off of Amazon's deal of the day that were 2.2+ only. There's obviously Flash 10.3, too. The other one I got (which I've been trying to get ahold of since I got my phone) is Kongregate Arcade.
Anything you guys know of that's a really good Android 2.2+ app that I'm missing?

I'm actually working on trying to get the i9000 front facing camera mod to work on our Continuum. I need an i400 I can tear apart and do some fitment testing. I've seen some photos of the i9000 camera and the i500 (Fascinate) camera which I think is the same as the Continuum camera. It might work with a little trimming here and there. Ill post back once I have some results.
This is gonna sound pretty silly but the new Captain America game requires 2.2. I'm not much of a gamer but I actually bought it for $1 in the market and it installed then after the ~150mb download it gave me the error message on my stock Continuum. Took my son to the movie and we loved it, was looking forward to letting him play the game(which was well reviewed). Bah.
So happy to see this 2.2 update stuff. I'm going to have to do my homework now and make a visit to the darkside. I love this phone, will be more than happy to de-bing and de-bloat it!
Speaking of games: Plants vs Zombies and Peggle on the Amazon App store.
Was lucky enough to catch them free, but could not get them to run on Eclair.
+1 for netflix and google-music.

[Q] Netflix and youtube app

Hi,
So xbmc on the ouya is pretty much the best experience i´ve gotten so far on a small setup! love it.
But when i install the netflix apk, its really hard / impossible to navigate with the D-pad, plus the quality of the stream seems to be aimed at mobile phones. Anyone gotten a better APK where you can browse with the d-pad and get a good quality stream?
And youtube, i managed to install the youtube APK, and the streams are looking great, but i cant login, plus it seems i just find the stock mobile version, ive heard that the google tv is alot better, but does it enable log in as well?
Sorry for the wall of text, but these are the 2 missing features i really want.
I have installed the tv versions of both apps and they are easier to navigate. No problem logging in but I do have the google store mod.
Netflix quality can be poor at times.

Did you ever figure this out? My wife hates me for putting for taking out our ****ty streamer and replacing it with the Ouya. On Netflix, can't scroll through right or left when picking when you want to watch and can't scroll down to select episodes of TV shows when there is more than 5-6.

The easiest solution I have found it just have a bluetooth mouse. You can just drag the screen up and down, etc as if you were touching the screen. It works pretty well.
Or you can use the touchpad of the controller to scroll. Double tab and then drag up. It's a bit sluggish but it works.
The only problem I have is that the playback stops if the controller turns itself off.
using netflix apk 1.8.1
i got the 1.8.1 working with no playback issues, and with some use of ouya control, does not pause when the control turns off.
My only gripe is the subtitles are very small... can any dev can do a modified netflix 1.8.1 apk with bigger fonts?
