video playback - Atrix 4G General

i know this has been discussed but i think that it is freaking ridiculous that we cant play all video types on the so called worlds most powerful smartphone. it should play all formats stock

Okay. So did you have a question like, "Does anybody know of an app that will play ___ video format"? Were optimizing our devices here at XDA, not complaining about them.

I agree....thus I have installed arcMedia 4 my mkv's. Seems pretty good. Plays my 720p copies quite nice.....however...thru wehtop on a 42" with webtop mob the playback is slightly stuttered from time to time....still tolerable to me though.

indeed All formats are supported on the so called most powerful phone
(via third part player)
but whether it will be playing smoothly remains to be discussed

what is the best player? i tried qqplayer,no results

Qqplayer seems to play everything.
player.qq.com/android
I can see it just fine searching for it on the market.
There is another thread talking about how to use handbrake to convert movies to a format that the atrix will play natively.
I followed it and it worked perfectly

i got audio on my 720p clips.. and they look awesome by the way

It depends on audio coding, from what i tested, about everything is supported except for OGG.
80% of my media collection works flawlessly on the SGS, videos look awesome.

Hi. I also used other players. Some, like rockplayer play the ctu videos but with such a low framerate as to be unwatchable. Maybe it's a codecs problem? Has anyone found a video player capable of playing everything?
Flawless on mine too
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Mine plays 720 MKV file withaudio only and Rockplayer plays file with video but some smearing and audio out of sync.
The Samsung sample files that are avi 720 not MKV play really good.

Have you tried ctu tv shows?
Ctu releases are definately not working. But Dimension releases do.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Some will be DD, MP3, AAC, etc, it'll all depend on the codec, check it with TSMuxeR, it'll tell you what format it's in.
Also, my MKVs have all played fine, v good quality, audio is fantastic too. Even though the screen isn't a 720 screen, thus kinda pointless, it looks great. Damn sight easier than re-encoding them for the correct resolution at least

Gotta disagree on the "pointless" comment. You point out a major plus, re-encoding. Other purpose, video-output, I want to be able to serve my 720P content to computers and TVs, I would suffer a worse resolution or have to keep two files for each movie/video I *might* want to serve. 720P playback is a near God-send (IMHO).
The problem is with videos like ctu releases with 448 kbps audio. I've already sent an email to samsung to report the problem.

The thing it's that this ctu videos worked flawless on Samsung Wave.I hope this will be fixed in future firmwares.

Yes, it is difficult for them. As A Linux user, I can attest to this; proprietary/patented codecs cause licensing issues, pure and simple. Therefore, they can not be included in Vanilla (Open-Source) Android. And given that the point of the Nexus line is that they run Vanilla Android, you see the issue.
You can help solve this problem by converting your videos to open formats like Ogg Theora and/or WebM. That way, you can play your videos, and you help reduce the trend of technology being hampered by proprietary licensing. </rant>

I just dragged and dropped a 4GB mp4 movie and watched it on the phone with no issue. Are you sure you video isn't using some other form of compression?
remember .mp4 is just a container
So let me get this right ... there is no way to play divx / avi files even using 3rd party software?!
They are currently working on making rockplayer work on the Nexus S.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I'm right now watching an episode of Mad Men that I ripped from my DVD using Handbrake on Ubuntu. It's an .mp4 container, and if I recall correctly I used H.264...
.mp4 will play just fine, it can be a baunch of different ways though because thats just the container, best program I have found period is Any Video Converter Pro. Just select Mobile devices/ Google Phones/ Nexus One. Perfect fit to screen and great quality. All it needs to be to run great is .h264, AAC audio, 800 x 480, about 1200 bitrate for video and 160kbps for audio and it will look and sound stunning. Most video players except mVideo Player are broken in someway on the Nexus S.
Rocklplayer has been updated on the website but not yet in the market. It now plays an AVI file on my Nexus S.

Try Mobo Player. Also, Atrix hasn't had 1080p update from Moto, so if your videos are 1080p they likely won't play if I am thinking correctly.

i have done some research on this matter, yes the tegra chip won't play any high profile x264 HD movie (either 720p or 1080p). you have to convert it to main profile x264 and it will play fine.
u can try "handbrake" to convert it and our beloved Atrix will play. you can make a google search to see the tutorial for converting using "handbrake"

Another thing you could do which some people have tried is to change the file extension to mp4, which will play with the native player. I think DivX is just a 'container' format which contains MP4 video so it should work in theory, although I haven't tried this on my TF myself.

1080p video encoded using the DivX (or XviD) codec is really inefficient. It's going to be a lot larger file size or of lower quality than a more modern codec like h.264. If you'd like to play 1080p video on your transformer, you'd be best to transcode your video to an h.264 video stream. Not only will the file size be much smaller, but it will play back using hardware acceleration which is much more likely to be smooth than software rendered DivX.
Rockplayer, Moboplayer, etc are all the same thing. They're just containers for ffmpeg--which is the best free software decoder available. Pick the one that has the best interface and is free. Paying for any of these is actually against the law, and while you're not going to get in any trouble, it's stupid to pay for something that should be free.

Some questions before I buy...

1. Whats it like as a wireless hotspot, my Galaxy S2 is flaky at best with lots of dropouts?
2. Can it play avi files out of the box, and if not, whats playback like in Moboplayer, any sync issues?
3. What sort of games are currently available in the PS store?
4. Hows the camera?
5. Has anyone loaded Google Music and streamed their music?

This is just personal experience, but YMMV.
1. Wireless hotspot has worked great for me. I hook my iPad up to it when I'm at my grandparent's house and there's never any loss of connection. That's even on the awful Kentucky EDGE network, too.
2. I can't really help there because I never play those types of videos.
3. The PS store? If you mean the Playstation Pocket app, if you're in America (and possibly Canada), nothing. All you gots is Crash Bandicoot. FPSE is better for PS1 emulation, anyway, if that's what you're looking for. A lot of people get their games from Gameloft.
4. The camera is pretty decent. It's better than the camera on my old Desire HD that I sold. It would be better with different software (it's the AOSP app), so download Vignette or Camera 360 if you want better pictures. On this subject, the FFC looks black and white unless you're in good light.
5. I have and it worked fine on said slow network. The speaker is really loud, too.

2. The Stock Media Play can not play .avi straight out the box.....BUT......all you need to do is download a better media player and it will work straight out the box.
MoboPlayer is my recomendation to you. It plays everything i have thrown at it so far.
3. The actual Playstation games are not worth buying at all imo. Just download FPSE and get all your PS games on the emulator. (leglally you need to own the games before you download them, blah blah technical blah blah).
The Xperia Play games from Gameloft and a few other devs are quite decent quality. I love Gameloft games. Some people do not though. Remember this is a phone first and foremost. Not a dedicated games console.
4. Camera is OK. 5MP is decent. Not amazing, but clear enough to have them pictures full blown on your PC monitor without seeing many pixels.
The video recording is ok too. Not 720p, but not far off, it takes a keen eye to tell the difference.

2. Yes, Moboplayer works great. You'll have no issues playing standard def content, and in some cases 720p works too.
3. Very few, Crash bandicoot, midevil, and jet moto or something along those lines, haven't used it in a while. I used fpse and play the games I want to play (Final Fantasy VII in my case) I also use it for Super nintendo, nintendo, gameboy, and N64.
4. Fine for a cell camera. Not as good as the more camera oriented cyber-shot phones, but it holds it's own. Also the shoulder buttons make it easy to tak pictures compared to touch screen shutter.
As stated this phone has the loudest speakers out of any phones I've seen. It has two very nice cell phone speakers rather than the standard one, so everything from ring tones to games are plenty loud. They also have extremely good frequency response for cell phone speakers. Music, games, videos, everything sounds "fuller" on the Play compared to other phones.
Thanks all for the great answers.
