Screen comparison - Eee Pad Transformer General

How does the screen compare to the Samsung galaxy tab 10.1.? I know people say that the Galaxy tab screen is over saturated but that is a good thing to me because the colors pop more, and I seen a comparison video of the 2 and the galaxy tabs screen is much brighter not that it matters because I usually turn down the brightness, i just want to know if it's a really close call or does the Samsung blow it away?

All I'm gonna say is, between the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Transformer, you shouldn't base your decision of buying which on the screen. Both have their good points and bad points.

Well, the Transformer has a MicroSD slot while GTab 10.1 don't. The GTab 10.1 is lighter, thinner.

I think the Sammy has a better screen overall. It is brighter and has deeper colors. But not by a lot. In my use of the Sammy 10.1 in stores, it did seem more responsive overall, and in comparison it seems I have to touch a bit harder to get the TF to register inputs. But I do agree the displays are close enough it really isn't the thing one should hinge their decision on.

That may be true...I've had my TF for a few days now and beyond the cool YouTube app, don't see much more I can't already do on my Samsung Infuse...I like the experience but I could spend the $400 on something more practical right now...itvis a fine unit but considering taking it back...

I think it comes down to a few things. The extra $100 you "save" with the TF, the microsd expansion, and the dock. If none of these matter to you, then you may want to get the Tab 10.1.
I use the TF as my main computer, so I could not live without the expansion space and most importantly the dock. Typing messages like this are such a breeze.

No! the transformer blows it away
The Samsung screen is sickly, samsung saw the negative reviews of the xoom about how flat the colors were and went to far the other way! It's gross!
The overall spec of the Tab is another joke, they read about ipad thin and decided to go thin, in fact it's so thin there's no room for anything, micro sd, hdmi.
What's the point in that

Actually, that's not at all true. While the number of Honeycomb-optimized apps are still around 300, most Android apps run on Honeycomb just find. They might not take great advantage of the larger screen, but they scale just fine in most cases and are fully functional.
I use my TF for 95% of what I used to use a notebook for. That couldn't possibly be true if Web browsing was all Honeycomb is good for at this point.

xoom or(vs) new galaxy tab

the new designed tab (8.9 n 10.1) has been announced. i like the new look very much, n sdcard is now available, but sadly the camera has been downgraded to 3mp =( n it looks a bit lag in the video by androidcentral in youtube..
n, is 8.9 using tegra cpu?
anyone think i shud jump to xoom iinstead?
I think I'm firmly on the new 10.1 Tab right now. 3 MP camera is something I can live with, in exchange for the slimness and weight. I think they displayed an older build (10.6 mm) thickness, with TouchWiz on it on the AC video. So, I don't want to jump to conclusions on the lag

But why in the world would you ever need a 8MP camera on your 10" tablet??? Is there ever a time when you have your tablet with you and not your phone or other digital camera/DSLR and you just need to take a hi-res photo?

I agree. I only use my phone camera for an "Oh Crap" spontaneous photo, not a thought out photograph where high res makes a difference. Not to mention that the quality of the lens really determines the end quality of the image. You can find shots taken on a 3MP camera with a great lens that will blow you away.

I haven't see the Androidcentral video. But apparently there were no functioning new Galaxy Tab 10.1. The old 10.1 was used to demonstrate Honeycomb and TouchWiz. So I probably wouldn't worry too much about that, since that isn't the tablet we are getting anyway.
I'm not concerned about the camera. I'd like to have a camera, but I don't require it to be uber. I think having a good camera on my smart phone is far more important, because it's easier to hold and click pictures with a 4 inch phone than a 10 inch tablet.
Xoom disappointed me, I returned mine after a few days. It was too heavy, didn't feel comfortable to hold long, and the screen was good, but not great.
Galaxy Tab is much lighter and appears to be more comfortable to hold. Comfort is huge, I want to be able to hold this thing in my hands without fatigue or sharp corners digging into my fingers.
And the PLS screen, no doubt will blow away whatever type of panel the Xoom is using.

I just got back from the Verizon store and spent a good 20 minutes with the Xoom, and honestly my arm got tired. That thing is HEAVY. Its the first thing you notice when you pick it up. It is obviously solidly built which is what the weight offers, but man I couldn't see myself using that thing with one hand for very long.
1.6lbs is heavy. If these things come out and are solidly built for 1lb I'll be sold on it.
Should also note that using the Xoom makes me realize I probably won't want anything smaller than a 10.1" tablet. The Xoom has a much smaller footprint than the iPad because it is 16:9 and not 4:3. I think the 8.9" might be a little too small. I like the 10.1" ability to be able to view full web pages without pinching/zooming to read them properly.
Yep, I'm sold on the 10.1 even though i swore to never purchase a Samsung device. I'm putting my Xoom up for sale as of today

Nvidia's tegra site has the galaxy tab 10.1 listed as having the tegra 2
I will probably look to buy the 10.1v (or whatever they end up calling the original). I want to buy in the next month or so, so if it's not available it will be the iPad 2 until June.
Have you seen the needle like charger tip for the xoom? Bad things will happen to something so flimsy... That's half the reason I took mine back. Other half is the new Tab 10.1.

another xoom or tab 10.1?

I need another tablet for the wife. Was thinking about giving her my current xoom and getting the samsung 10.1 when it comes out.
Is there any reason why I would regret that decision? It seems like the samsung is just as open as the xoom. I have nothing against the xoom, but since I just bought a samsung galaxy sII i thought it would be nice to match it with the new tablet.
I just want to know if I am overlooking something, and there is a reason I should stick with the xoom.

Now, we aren't certain about anything yet.
I hate TW (Vibrant owner) as much as the next guy, but I've heard conflicting reports (too lazy to properly cite right now) on whether the new incarnation of TW will simply be a UI overlay, or a fully integrated modification to the OS.
I'm certainly keeping my ear to the ground re: the new line of Galaxy tablets.
That said, if the tablet need is now, the Xoom is the best bet IMO.

I actually plan on selling my Xoom once a tablet with the new Qualcomm chipset comes out. I didn't realize the media limitations of the Tegra 2 until after I bought it and am having a bit of buyers remorse now. The new Qualcomms can decode 1080p like the TI used in the Playbook. I'm not sure if this is something that can be addressed by nvidia via drivers. For the record I'm able to play high profile (4500kbps) 720p encoded with DVD Catalyst on my Xoom.

The Samsung 10.1 tab have about same weight as the ipad2, so will be a bit lighter than the Xoom, not sure if this will affect battery life.
The biggest advantage of the 10.1 tab I think will be a better screen than the Xoom. I’m happy with the quality and viewing angle of my Xoom. However, when compared to my 7” Galaxy tab and friend's ipad, the Xoom’s screen looks dull and not as bright.
All depend on how long you want to wait for the 10.1 Galaxy tab.
Also the Galaxy tab 8.9 (470g) is almost light as the 7" Galaxy tab (380g), that might be a good 2nd tablet.

From the specs we saw on the GT 10.1v (the older model) the battery size will be the same or slightly bigger than the Xoom.
FWIW. I'm growing a bit tired of the size/weight of the Xoom. The 8.9 (or other similar sized/weighted tablets) might be up my alley. The Xoom is just too clumsy and heavy for extended 1 handed use (not to mention that the UI is not very landscape 1-hand friendly). I'll take a device that is made out of plastic as long as its light and well built for the components.
I think they mentioned that the touch wiz ux is just a set of widgets and not fully integrated into the system

That Tab 10.1 is a sexy looking device. Tough decision. It might be worth going with the 10.1 just to get the better screen, though IIRC, it doesn't have a SDcard slot (not that it's doing us Xoom owners much good right now).
That said, I think physical storage capacity is almost irrelevant anymore. I have both Amazon cloud for my music and Google cloud for pictures and docs. The only storage I actually need is for apps, and they're generally small.

I think you're right. Can't remember, but I feel like the 8.9 didn't have a SDcard slot though. Could be wrong.
The new samsung galaxy 10.1 should be a nice tablet and should not come with anything but pure honeycomb with some added apps/Widgets.
Other tablets to consider, besides the ipad2 or new Samsung 10.1:
Asus transformer, which will be short on stock and hard to come by for the next few months or so. It has a nice pricepoint and some nice accessories.
Nook color, just updated to basically be a pseudo tablet but has alot of Dev/rom support so is pretty much full blow android experience.
HTC flyer, will have some very awesome features especially very accurate integration with stylus, not using honeycomb experience but should be upgraded to honeycomb soon after release.
Playbook, nice tablet but is kind of hampered at the moment and is meant more for business user in my opinion.
Toshiba 10.1 inch tablet rumored to be Google's baby and if true should get great honeycomb support. This will be THE tablet if all the rumors are true (do a Google search for nexus tablet or nexus t). We should find out at Google I/o on may 10th or 11th.
Honestly I would go with the xoom or the Toshiba tablet. I would certainly wait till Google I/o to make a decision since the xoom should have some updates coming down the pipe as well.
I for one will keep my Xoom and upgrade a year or 2 down the road (I'll give it to my wife or something) to the latest octuple core processor 1mm thick 10" tablet capable of playing 4K video flawlessly. Then I will laugh at all of you with your old samsung 10.1's! bwahahaha
I'd wait to see if it has a working fastboot first, and can flash unsigned images.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1's greatest attribute is how thin and light it is. Touchwiz will hinder you if you wanted to stay current with Honeycomb's latest n greatest versions.

The biggest portion of storage on a device like this music/movies. Google cloud music just fixed the music issue.

My 2 issues with the Xoom: Weight and size. The GT is lighter so its on the list.

There is HDMI support, you just have to buy an adaptor
If the GT 10.1 had a brighter screen than the Xoom's but same resolution I would be interested. Thats always been my biggest complaint about the Xoom.
I don't really care about the extra CDcard slot. (haven't missed it yet on the xoom)
I think HDMI is a gimmick, Have you ever actually seen anyone use it? I guess now that we are starting to actually have easier access to movies it may get used.
Lighter Weight and thinner would be a plus but it's still going to be too big to fit in your pocket so whats it matter really. If the battery life is not as good I would rather have a heavier thicker tablet.
Also it would have to be rooted.

I do, at least weekly- and now that I can watch Amazon Prime/Google Movies, even more now.
Definitely switching
Definitely switching. In my opinion, the biggest shortcoming of my Xoom is the horrible screen. Reviewers are calling the Gtab 10.1's screen better than the iPad, and the screen on my iPad owns the Xoom everyday and twice on Sunday. Thinner and lighter is just an added benefit. I have a Google IO version in the mail, so no Touchwiz for me!
I have the GT from IO as well as the Xoom. My coworker bought the Transformer. I took a photo of them side by side:
http://www.inthemyst.net/IMG_4645.jpg
From that angle, the Transformer is actually thicker than the Xoom, but barely. I couldnt take any photos of the screens since there's too much glare in my office.
My honest opinion: The GT is sexy. Everyone that I showed it to thought it was amazing and wonderful. A couple mentioned that it is heavier than it looked (a good thing), but it's actually very light compared to the Xoom. I think the box + GT + accessories together weigh less than the Xoom.
If i were to go out today to purchase a tablet, I would probably get the GT just purely on aesthetics. But since I already have a Xoom, I'm going to choose to keep the Xoom because of extra MicroSD slot as well as the standard microUSD slot.
Does the GT have the same cool (blue) display tint of the Xoom?
Definitely not giving up my Xoom, the fact that we get all updates first is more then enough. Also 4G when we finally get it and not to mention who says the Samsung I/o tab wont get touch wiz in a future update, I'm not trying to deal with flashing custom roms on my tab

not really.. considering i don't think they have a working micro sd slot yet and the xoom is just heavy with a washed out display. but if you like the extra ports and don't mind the added bulk and weight, then it might be.
I had a xoom when it first came out. I really liked it but returned it because i really didn't want a Verizon data plan (bought on contract for the discount) as well as its functional infancy. I have GT10.1 now and also really like it as well though it carries over some of the same flaws. Ill def keep my tab but were they released together at same price I might've gone with the xoom.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
even they sell it for $450 i will not buy it. i had xoom for just a week and the problem is its so heavy, auto brightness sucks, screen washed-out. it has SD but it will take you a lot of effort to get work..(root, etc)
I wouldnt buy the xoom even for $400. There is simply no reason to. Its bulky, the screen is washed out and has poor viewing angles. Micro sd card slot does not even work either. Tab 10 has all the same ports.
Even if you on a tight budget and really want a Honeycomb tablet you can get the transformer for $400 w/ IPS screen. No reason to buy the xoom.
Dont waste your money on a tablet with a junk screen like the xoom. Its the most important part of the device.
Xoom vs SGT at same price. Should be an easy decision.
I originally had a Xoom but ended up returning it to Costco after 80 days (Costco allows 90 days). I liked my Xoom. I love my Galaxy! 'Nuff said.
xoom has a ****ty display. even the transformer ist much better.
If the Xoom's screen is as lackluster and pathetic as the OG Droid's screen is (nice phone, but the screen is rather disappointing), I wouldn't touch the Xoom. A tablet is more or less a giant screen, so I'd make sure I got a good one.
IMO, OP, you're asking the wrong question. It's not Xoom vs. SGT 10.1. It's Asus Transformer vs. SGT 10.1. You'll get everything the Xoom has, only a better screen, working SD card and it's $100 cheaper than the Xoom and the SGT. The SGT 10.1 is a better finished product IMO, has the best screen and is more comfortable to use, while the Transformer has build quality issues and is less comfortable to use. But if more built-in functionality is important to you, $100 cheaper is almost reason enough to get the Transformer over the Xoom.
Basically: If you want a netbook replacement and don't need the absolute best tablet experience, or are on a budget, get the Transformer.
If you want the best Android tablet experience available and don't mind buying accessories for extra functionality, get the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Yes, it has the best display and one other thing people forgot to mention, the speakers are awesome. I have xoom, thrive and GT 10.1 I just got these within this week for comparing and keeping the one I like. So far, even with those extra slot flaws, I'm still inclined towards the GTab 10.1. In fact, Thrive has edge over xoom in display quality.
the xoom has a more responsive screen, so it feels a bit faster (even faster than the tf's response). i preferred the button on the back since it kept accidental powering down - i'm always turning on my gt10.1 when i don't want to. the transformer has a better screen only if you're lucky enough to get one with minimal bleed.

Laptop dock as tablet/Asus Infinity alternative

I've been toying with the idea of getting a tablet like the Asus Infinity but after seeing the UK prices I'm having second thoughts and seeking alternatives, please check the link below.

I was after the Asus mainly for the keyboard dock, I travel for work a lot and it would be a great help typing up long emails and reports during the evenings.
With this dock I fail to see any reason why I would need a tablet, as the Note is perfect for nearly everything else I would have used a tablet for anyway.
Can anyone see any other advantages of a tablet that I couldn't achieve with the Note and the laptop dock?
Thanks

Sorry, just realised this should probably be moved to accessories

It looks good, but I suspect that it will be rather expensive. Plus, I am not sure how the Note or any smartphone will fair powering such a large screen. Their graphics are designed for their screen sizes - nothing bigger. If it works though, I am impressed. But, if you like the looks of the Infinity, check out its little brothers...the Prime & Pad 300 Transformers. They're not quite as good, but a lot cheaper!
I'm not sure that it will be really expensive, it is just a keyboard and screen after all.
The thing I like about this idea is that it will never go out of date, it will just upgrade every time you upgrade your phone. The only thing left behind will be the screen resolution but I think its supposed to be 1200x800 so not too bad

Well, the Asus Transformer's dock is a $150 dollars, so this with a screen also will be a decent amount of money. Plus, it will go out of date as its screen resolution will soon be old.
Doesn't the transformer dock have a massive battery and usb ports etc adding to the price.
I was looking at the other Asus models but I think I'll wait for more info on this first.
I think it will cover my needs
