another xoom or tab 10.1? - Xoom General

I need another tablet for the wife. Was thinking about giving her my current xoom and getting the samsung 10.1 when it comes out.
Is there any reason why I would regret that decision? It seems like the samsung is just as open as the xoom. I have nothing against the xoom, but since I just bought a samsung galaxy sII i thought it would be nice to match it with the new tablet.
I just want to know if I am overlooking something, and there is a reason I should stick with the xoom.

Well its not as open because it has touch wiz

Now, we aren't certain about anything yet.
I hate TW (Vibrant owner) as much as the next guy, but I've heard conflicting reports (too lazy to properly cite right now) on whether the new incarnation of TW will simply be a UI overlay, or a fully integrated modification to the OS.
I'm certainly keeping my ear to the ground re: the new line of Galaxy tablets.
That said, if the tablet need is now, the Xoom is the best bet IMO.

Please put a disclaimer when you post this. There is no confirmation whether or not these devices will have touch wiz. Many reports even say that if it does come with TouchWiz, it will be able to be turned off.

I actually plan on selling my Xoom once a tablet with the new Qualcomm chipset comes out. I didn't realize the media limitations of the Tegra 2 until after I bought it and am having a bit of buyers remorse now. The new Qualcomms can decode 1080p like the TI used in the Playbook. I'm not sure if this is something that can be addressed by nvidia via drivers. For the record I'm able to play high profile (4500kbps) 720p encoded with DVD Catalyst on my Xoom.

The Samsung 10.1 tab have about same weight as the ipad2, so will be a bit lighter than the Xoom, not sure if this will affect battery life.
The biggest advantage of the 10.1 tab I think will be a better screen than the Xoom. I’m happy with the quality and viewing angle of my Xoom. However, when compared to my 7” Galaxy tab and friend's ipad, the Xoom’s screen looks dull and not as bright.
All depend on how long you want to wait for the 10.1 Galaxy tab.
Also the Galaxy tab 8.9 (470g) is almost light as the 7" Galaxy tab (380g), that might be a good 2nd tablet.

From the specs we saw on the GT 10.1v (the older model) the battery size will be the same or slightly bigger than the Xoom.
FWIW. I'm growing a bit tired of the size/weight of the Xoom. The 8.9 (or other similar sized/weighted tablets) might be up my alley. The Xoom is just too clumsy and heavy for extended 1 handed use (not to mention that the UI is not very landscape 1-hand friendly). I'll take a device that is made out of plastic as long as its light and well built for the components.

I think they mentioned that the touch wiz ux is just a set of widgets and not fully integrated into the system

That Tab 10.1 is a sexy looking device. Tough decision. It might be worth going with the 10.1 just to get the better screen, though IIRC, it doesn't have a SDcard slot (not that it's doing us Xoom owners much good right now).
That said, I think physical storage capacity is almost irrelevant anymore. I have both Amazon cloud for my music and Google cloud for pictures and docs. The only storage I actually need is for apps, and they're generally small.

The slim Samsung 10.1 has a microsd slot. It's the 10.1V that doesn't

I think you're right. Can't remember, but I feel like the 8.9 didn't have a SDcard slot though. Could be wrong.

The new samsung galaxy 10.1 should be a nice tablet and should not come with anything but pure honeycomb with some added apps/Widgets.
Other tablets to consider, besides the ipad2 or new Samsung 10.1:
Asus transformer, which will be short on stock and hard to come by for the next few months or so. It has a nice pricepoint and some nice accessories.
Nook color, just updated to basically be a pseudo tablet but has alot of Dev/rom support so is pretty much full blow android experience.
HTC flyer, will have some very awesome features especially very accurate integration with stylus, not using honeycomb experience but should be upgraded to honeycomb soon after release.
Playbook, nice tablet but is kind of hampered at the moment and is meant more for business user in my opinion.
Toshiba 10.1 inch tablet rumored to be Google's baby and if true should get great honeycomb support. This will be THE tablet if all the rumors are true (do a Google search for nexus tablet or nexus t). We should find out at Google I/o on may 10th or 11th.
Honestly I would go with the xoom or the Toshiba tablet. I would certainly wait till Google I/o to make a decision since the xoom should have some updates coming down the pipe as well.

I for one will keep my Xoom and upgrade a year or 2 down the road (I'll give it to my wife or something) to the latest octuple core processor 1mm thick 10" tablet capable of playing 4K video flawlessly. Then I will laugh at all of you with your old samsung 10.1's! bwahahaha

I'd wait to see if it has a working fastboot first, and can flash unsigned images.

Touchwiz for Honeycomb
Anandtech is saying it will ship with Touchwiz for Honeycomb.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1's greatest attribute is how thin and light it is. Touchwiz will hinder you if you wanted to stay current with Honeycomb's latest n greatest versions.
All depends on whats important to you or your wife...whomever is going to use it.

Xoom or galaxy tab 10.1?

Ok so I'm looking into buying an android tablet because I'm going on a road trip to Vegas in July and its a 3 day drive so I wanted to get one to stay entertained on the drive and while we r out there (I can't gamble because I'm only 16 ). So I can't decide between the galaxy tab 10.1 and the xoom.
From what I have heard the xoom's display is kinda dim and glary and the speakers r decent but it has stock 3.0 so it get direct updates which is a huge plus.
But I'm guessing the tab will have some kind of super amoled screen since just about all of their phones do so that would be a plus. But this will have a touchwiz overlay on it which is a downside because Samsung f***ing sucks with updates and I hate waiting. But if google releases the source code for 3.0 then it wont matter because I'm sure devs will make some good roms for it.
So what do you guys think will be better?

Couldn't find the specs for the Tab 10.1 from Samsung's site but I think I found the specs on some other site and it looks to be comparable to the XOOM (The specs for the Tab: (google "samsung galaxy tab 10.1 specifications" and first link, I would post the link itself but the forum won't let me since I don't have enough posts))
Since the Tab 10.1 isn't out yet, it makes it hard to really compare based off of just specs alone (even more so when the specs can changed from now until released date in June, although they probably won't change it much now since it's getting closer to that date).
What I can see, the Tab 10.1 will have support for playback in 1080p and records in 720p. The XOOM playbacks and records in 720p. The Tab's back facing camera is only 3MP while the XOOM's 5MP. The front facing is 2MP for both.
Both tablets are using the same processor so not much to say about that.
Both tablets are using 3.0 Honeycomb but the Tab 10.1 has a few UI changes but not by much (probably by way of an add APK file since Google is not allowing manufacturers to change the core UI from my understanding, but I could be wrong).
Another thing that's different is that the Tab 10.1 will be for 3G/WiFi only while the XOOM will be upgraded to 4G LTE once available.
I, personally, gotten the XOOM because I feel in love with what it can do plus the fact that it's pure Android allows for easy and fast upgrades. Plus the fact that it's upgraded to 4G LTE is awesome for using the faster speeds once available.
Note that Xoom is NOT a Nexus device.
Meaning, it will get update from Motorola, and NOT directly from Google.
TouchWiz on GTab 10.1 is not deeply integrated on OS like in the Samsung phones. It is just apps and Widgets. It does not alter the Android Honeycomb UI.
That's about Android update.

True, but I said it as such due to the fact that the updates will be much faster since there is no core UI changes
I do love my Xoom, but play on upgrading to either the 10.1 or 8.9 Galaxy tab when the 3G/4G versions are out. It's significantly lighter and thinner than the Xoom (almost half the weight, and yes, it does matter) and I personally look forward to TouchWiz with resizable widgets and such, though I realize I'm in the minority.
Once it's out, go to the store, try them both, see how they feel. something like a tablet (or ebook reader, I got the original Nook over a Kindle because of this) it really matter how it feels in your hands, and that differs with every person.
The sexy thin Tab 10.1 for sure, if you can wait until they come out, if you need a tab now thats another debate
Gtab records 1080p video but it doesn't have HDMI out alsobwhy haven't you looked at the see pad transirmer that's my tablet and it is awesome it has IPS display and no the Gtab does not AMOLED screens

Xoom vs GT 10.1

Will any Xoomer switch to Galaxy Tab 10.1 due to thinner and lighter size?

Galaxy Tab has no SDCard slot and no HDMI out. The production versions (not the ones from I/O) will also have an ugly touchwiz skin over it.

it's not worth upgrading to a new tablet this early. Maybe next year with the next gen tegras and every tab being light as the ipad 2 with all the features of the xoom.

had my Xoom for 2 months almost. Never even thought about using the HDMI port, and our SDcard doesn't even work.
The biggest portion of storage on a device like this music/movies. Google cloud music just fixed the music issue.
I just don't need more than 16gb of storage. Really.
My 2 issues with the Xoom: Weight and size. The GT is lighter so its on the list.

There is HDMI support, you just have to buy an adaptor
If the GT 10.1 had a brighter screen than the Xoom's but same resolution I would be interested. Thats always been my biggest complaint about the Xoom.
I don't really care about the extra CDcard slot. (haven't missed it yet on the xoom)
I think HDMI is a gimmick, Have you ever actually seen anyone use it? I guess now that we are starting to actually have easier access to movies it may get used.
Lighter Weight and thinner would be a plus but it's still going to be too big to fit in your pocket so whats it matter really. If the battery life is not as good I would rather have a heavier thicker tablet.
Also it would have to be rooted.

I do, at least weekly- and now that I can watch Amazon Prime/Google Movies, even more now.
Definitely switching
Definitely switching. In my opinion, the biggest shortcoming of my Xoom is the horrible screen. Reviewers are calling the Gtab 10.1's screen better than the iPad, and the screen on my iPad owns the Xoom everyday and twice on Sunday. Thinner and lighter is just an added benefit. I have a Google IO version in the mail, so no Touchwiz for me!
I have the GT from IO as well as the Xoom. My coworker bought the Transformer. I took a photo of them side by side:
http://www.inthemyst.net/IMG_4645.jpg
From that angle, the Transformer is actually thicker than the Xoom, but barely. I couldnt take any photos of the screens since there's too much glare in my office.
My honest opinion: The GT is sexy. Everyone that I showed it to thought it was amazing and wonderful. A couple mentioned that it is heavier than it looked (a good thing), but it's actually very light compared to the Xoom. I think the box + GT + accessories together weigh less than the Xoom.
If i were to go out today to purchase a tablet, I would probably get the GT just purely on aesthetics. But since I already have a Xoom, I'm going to choose to keep the Xoom because of extra MicroSD slot as well as the standard microUSD slot.
Does the GT have the same cool (blue) display tint of the Xoom?
Definitely not giving up my Xoom, the fact that we get all updates first is more then enough. Also 4G when we finally get it and not to mention who says the Samsung I/o tab wont get touch wiz in a future update, I'm not trying to deal with flashing custom roms on my tab
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
Giving Sumsungs track record with updates. My friends has the fascinated and it is stil on 2.1. So its a no brainer I am staying my Xoom, soon to be 4g.
If i sell my xoom it will be for new features and better hardware, not size and weight. I dont notice millimeter differences, they are all equally portable, a ounce and a millimeter doesnt change much

For me the two serve very different purposes so no, I won't upgrade or replace my 10.1 wifi only Tab.
One is a big, not very portable entertainment device for use at home and the other is a travel compagnon. 7.7" would be much to small for me to use as my primary tablet at home but it might be a nice size to carry around.
..going to pre-order for my wife to replace her P1000.. she wants thinner tab..and i will stay with my 10.1.
I want one today! tell me where I can order one, money is not a problem.
I've been window shopping for a tablet for a while now and when they announced this I was blown away, I can't wait to get one. Ultra thin and light, and Super AMOLED Plus at 1280 x 800 (196 ppi!!!). At first I wasn't sure what to think about the 7.7 inch size because I was originally thinking about getting a 10.1 inch tablet, but the portability of such a light tablet is very intriguing and the more I think about it it sounds like a good size. This is the largest OLED display you can get at an affordable price and it's pretty high resolution for 7.7 inches, I can imagine myself watching movies on this in bed instead of turning on the TV. I'm really hoping they can keep the price low, around $400-450 would be perfect for the 16GB Wi-Fi model.
I was all over getting this then I looked at a 10.1, it is the tab size I'm looking for. With the slightly narrower profile I can type in portrait mode and it's perfect for reading books and magazines. Most stuff I have is on Google so I don't need a lot of local space.
So no, I won't be getting a 7.7 My P1000 goes to a new home today
No, I am waiting the next ICS tablet, with quad core.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Nope. I'm holding onto my 10.1. Gonna wait for reviews of quad cores. Then will decide whether it is worth it.
Not sure if I'll pick one up. Depends on the price. Frankly was expecting the 8.9 to be lower in price than it is. Seems like they should be priced porportional to the size of their screens.
10.1 at $499 = $49.41/inch.
The 8.9 should have been 49.41 x 8.9 or $439.71 ($439)
The 7.7 should be 49.41 x 7.7 or $380.43 ($379)
All 16gb Tegra 2 models with 1gb ram.
The Acer A100 7" tab is $329. A bargain at $47/inch.
Just a pricing theory.
I am currently thinking about a 7.7.
I had a 10.1, but returned it to the store after experiencing the Newton's Rings issue, so I am now thinking about either a Exynos Powered SGT 7.7 or a Tegra 3 powered Transformer 2.
One question I have is, does the 7.7 only come in 3G / LTE variants? If I was getting one, I would want Wi-Fi only?
Stewart
FYI - Just saw this. Tab 7.7 has microSD slot.

I will be getting one and selling of my 10.1. Will be using this for media stuff cux its light weight and samoled+ screen. Then will get an win 8 slate for full work force (samsung slate series 7, or any newer ivy bridge slate with wacom pen). Quad core android won't help with my work much.
The 7.7 just passed the FCC. So now it is just wait and see on a release date.

It's always amazed me that Samsung in particular, with their display panel manufacturing capability, has never bothered to put out a tab with a decent resolution. I understand that there are manufacturing issues with current AMOLED technology, but there is no good reason that Apple doesn't even have WUXGA or even 1080p LCD competition in the 10" bracket. It's things like this that make me wish iOS and Apple in general weren't so awful.

Well, maybe Samsung will be neck and neck. The new 11.2 is supposedly going to have a 2560x1600 screen. So, the density will be close to the new iPad's 9.7 2048x1536 display. 11.2 is getting on the big side for portability, although that does look like a nice device. Although, no word on release timeframe.

To be truthful, I have been disappointed with both Google and Samsung : Google has created unnecessary slump of the tablet app quality by introducing our awkward friend honeycomb ( although everyone reaped its benefit in ICS) and Samsung because its dropping support for tablet which is very capable of ruining job ( as I am on cm10). And here's the worst part, apple aces at both these factors ( since a lot of iPad apps and mostly a device is supported for 3-4 iOS release.)
So here's the situation, unless android takes control of the tablet market soon, Microsoft with their disturbing windows 8 would!
Thus until the 29th, android's fate is in balance

Completely agree. Tablet specific apps really need to start turning up. There's so many more iPad specific apps compared to android, it's hard to compare.
I like the looks of the Asus Transformers.
i agree with the op. the galaxy tab is a very nice tablet I'm glad I have it
I sold my iPad 2 for galaxy note 10.1 and am extremely happy with the tab.who says that screen is bad?it may not be as good as iPad 3 , in terms of display spec on paper, but it's very nice in reality. I too was very confused before I made the purchase , after reading some reviews. But I was satisfied after getting a demo, so I went ahead with my purchase, and am extremely happy.
But i luv Galaxy Note 10.1 n Asus Nexus 7

Weight
I also generally agree GT 10.1 looks/design are good, though I am not 100% satisfied.
But I think more important things about hardware are the weight, ergonomics for your hands, LCD quality, sound quality and so on.
I have an iPad 3, and it is very heavier than GT 10.1, ergonomics is just bad because if you hold it long your palm hurts due to its wedge like edges (GT 10.1 has rounded edges). Asus Transformer Prime's LCD was not as good as that of GT 10.1 in my opinion. iPad 3's speaker's sound was definitely louder and deep but it is mono.... GT 10.1 has stereo speakers...
Anyways, it is a shame that there are not major Android tablets to choose from. I was looking for Galaxy Tab 10.1 2, but it was a let-down. Galaxy Note 10.1 looks ugly... Nexus 7 was too small... Amazon Kindle Fire is not a real Android tablet... I am just waiting for the next big Android tablet from Samsung/Google or Sony.
PS: I do not like the design and LCD of Asus. Motorola, you are out of my choice, that's right I am a former Atrix user.
Galaxy Tab 10.1 Still Rocks
I just got done updating to pershoots 10/17 CM10 and fell in love with my tablet all over again. Aesthetically it's very minimalistic, which I Love. With support from dev's like pershoot it's still one of the best overall tablets on the market.
The only other tablet I liked as much was the Nexus 7 but more because of the power and over polish of the OS than the aesthetics. Bought a nexus 7 for the Fiancee and used it more than she did until she dropped it and broke the digitizer.
I'm looking forward to the nexus 10, samsung has great physical designs and I've learned that you can't beat a nexus device.
