At tis point I am curious... - Epic 4G General

With an official update being so close yet so far (according to recent rumors and speculations) should I have my Epic rooted (cause... me want netflix :x) or just wait at this point? Just curious.

If you want Netflix just throw on a Gingerbread leak ROM. I have been watching tons of netflix. As for rooting or unrooting, no one knows for sure when the OTA will come and when it does you can unroot at that time and get it. It took Sprint and Samsung over 4 months to get us Froyo from the time they released in Europe. We are going on our second month since Europe release of Gingerbread. Sprint does not want their customer service line overloaded with issues about the upgrade, so if they don't think it is perfect they will wait until it is.

EDIT: will the screen rotation be fixed? Mines keeps getting stuck.

Vibrant Custom Q's

It seems like the custom ROMs out right now are for the international version, right?
There should be ROMs coming for US-specific (IE, Vibrant), correct? I just don't want to get something I cannot customize. What scares me is that Samsung will update it to 2.2 and not release 3.0 later on?
Coming from the Touch Pro 2 scene where there are lots of variations as well, there should be roms that are compatible with multiple handsets and even some geared towards specific phones. Additional add-ons might be required for button layouts or something but I'm not sure how it works since I am speaking with experience only in the Windows Mobile area.
Regarding the update, it's really hard to tell since we don't even have the 2.2 update yet. But hopefully, they'll continue to support the Galaxy S as it's Samsung's direct iPhone competitor.
We should be able to flash any firmware for the galaxy s including the modaco rom. The real question is will we be able to get a hacked recovery to stick like amon_ra or cynogen ? Ps my phone comes this week im freaking excited!!

I'm excited to and I'm exited to be apart of building the vibrant section hopefully can atleast beat out the captivate and fascinate page
Thursday morning I'm waking up early and picking this baby up. I hope we can gain root the same way as the international version.

same going to be at the store 9 am to pick it up then head straight to xda for a root and a cfw that would be a dream
Hopefully the source code that was released by Samsung for the Galaxy S is the same for the Vibrant, which I see no reason why it would change but it is Samsung. If it is, I will help to port CM6 over to the Vibrant. The source code from Samsung that I downloaded yesterday has from what I could see with my quick glance over the drivers (baseband, sound, screen, etc) that would be needed to bake up a custom ROM.
That would be so awesome. I really don't care about samsung supporting this phone, as long as they let devs do their thing. Meaning not to lock up anything ala droid x

It doesn't matter if they don't officially update it to 3.0, when there is root, there is a way!

not nessecarily true lol, take a look at the Motorola Milestone for an example, they have had root for a long time now, but cant load a custom rom due to an encrypted bootloader.
That's why I'm saying that if samsung doesn't do it, let the community have what it needs to do it themselves, look at cyan. My g1 should've been obsolete a year ago, but on the contrary its as strong as it was when I first rooted it.

If the drivers are there, 90% of the work is done. We'll have the latest roms (barring some unlikely extreme performance requirements).

Haven't checked in a while but the Behold 2 was a pain in the ass to root. And Samsung said that they didn't want people hacking their phones. That was a few months ago, since I don't have the phone I haven't checked back. I'm getting this bad boy and hopefully there will be a lot of support for it.

Second that. Took me 1 minute. Maybe less, LOL. Running tests, everything seems to be working, SU permisions et al.
Not sure on boot, but it seems that Samsung didn't even try to make it hard.
I went back to winmo for a while, and while the HD2 community is great, have to say glad to be back on android.

The behold 2 wasn't too bad to root me and kam187 had it rooted shortly after it launched. The custom roms part was the hard part lol.

The fact that modaco has a custom ROM out indicates that it's probably going to be fairly easy for us.

Just got the 2.2 (froyo) OTA (Over the Air) update!!

Well looks like its finally rolling out. I just got the update down here in arkansas, curious to see how many others have already received it.

was going to ask the same thing...any proof
Got prompted that there is a system update just now, but won't download it until there is a confirmed root. Also I don't know if its froyo, im still on the original released rom...could be di18 that its just now bugging me about, as it is the first time ive seen an update message. Im in knoxville, tn.

Trolls will troll....
You can't post crap like this without proof. Give us a break, you say something, but we are supposed to believe you just because you say it? Sounds more like trolling since you can't take a picture and post it.
odd how the OP signed off
I doubt it..us getting an update before AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon is hard to believe...I would be willing to believe a possibility of an OTA..but for the OTA to have Froyo is an eyebrow raiser >.>
I mean last OTA was a month ago..and if Froyo is on Nov 29th an OTA in between is a possibility.
You can use shootme, screenshot, a digital cam or phone, a webcam, a polaroid and a scanner...
If you can't avail yourselves of any of those options, I can't bring myself to take you seriously.
Mines just di18...i thought I took the otacerts file out....guess not?

I'm pretty sure if this were true there would be at least 3 pages with more than 2 confirmations. Could be wrong though, I've been hopeful for almost 2 months. Should be here soon. A lil proof would be nice.
Yeah, I'm doubtful of the validity myself.

I was at the sprint store today picking up a Samsung intercept and was told not until late november early december. I honestly am not going to expect it until February next year.
It seems that the thread is only for trolling purposes. If you guys don't mind, I am closing this one down.

Maintenance Update

So, apparently, last week's maintenance update for the Fascinate broke the ability to see and write to the SD card from your PC. We're scheduled to get a maintenance update today. If anyone installs it and gets this issue, please let the rest of us know... Thanks.
I thought it was supposed 2 come tomorrow

I hope tomorrow comes soon, my phone is still toast Do you think that you (when the update comes around) could send it to me, so that i could flash it? idk if the process is simple or not, Bubby323 knows though Thank you in advance!
It'll probably just be an OTA... no real way to pull the ROM
Has anyone gotten the update yet?

I read an article talking about how manufacturers are not releasing promised updates. By doing so, people end up buying new devices. I can easily see that being the case for the Continuum.

I was promised by Verizon that i would have 2.2 on my phone "eventually". If Samsung doesn't hold up on the whole "eventual" part, i am going to be pissed... And have a long talk with my Verizon Rep... Maybe cash my phone in for a Fascinate due to their lying, which has 2.2 (with a rom)

[Q] Is 2.2 for sure in testing?

Because I'm curious, I know some say that its currently in testing.
I found this site from the Motorola site:
https://motorola-global-android.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/62460
Which makes it look like 2.2 is coming verrrry soon.
yes, i can tell you not only is it in testing but most likely coming soon.
i have seen proof of it on phones.

No its OTA. It goes out like all the other moto phones ota's.
the private moto forums have discussed it and it seems besides one girl having issues (unrelated to the update probably) everyone is saying it works good.
I dont know what they are watiing for, but surprisingly, the 2.2 rom is done and ready to ship. Probably waiting fot att confirmation.
Guess we get a carrier text when it is about to come out?

Sweet. That is excellent news.
Uh oh
Will it still upgrade to 2.2 if I have removed the AT&T branded crapware?
What application/service do I need to unblock in droidwall for it to come down?
Did you totally remove the crapware?? I used Bloat Freezer on the ATT bloatware and unfroze everything before updating. No problems.
Yes. This was before I read that you had to keep it. Removed without backup with Titanium right after I had rooted. Would a factory reset put it back? I'd like to not have to exchange the phone at a store, but not having Froyo is kind of a killer. I mean, FPSE isn't even compatible with eclair
What i'm hoping for is that motorola will put it on the update map soon so that we have a rough date. As for apps.. if anything couldn't we get the files off one of our bravos if factory reset doesn't work?

I just saw on the motorola website forum that they were looking for 1000 people to do final testing prior to roolout. Deadline to register just ended. Wish I would have found it sooner.

This is my first motorola android phone. How long does it typically take after they release the final build of a sw version for them to officially release to the general public? Also, has anyone who has gotten the update, uploaded it anywhere for others to download or is that even possible with this type of release? Thanks.

New firmware to test

Just got an email from motorola and it seems they are beta testing a new firmware. It didnt say when it would be released or what was included but last time i got the email the firmware rolled out that day. Maybe this is the hsupa update were waiting for. Maybe motorola actually gets to finalize code before firmwares are released. It would make sense since all bloatware can be uninstalled so easily where as when i had my captivate att forced u to delete bloatware. Just an idea. In the end that would mean faster updates since were waiting on moto and not att.ive had this phone for 2 months and i have had as many updates as i got with the captivate which i had for 9 months

Well whoever gets this first make sure you post results. I hope the upgrade to gingerbread comes out as quickly. It sucks having a locked bootloader but at least there addressing some of the issues. Who knows maybe we will get an unlocked bootloader. But for now I'll be happy with the root privilege and gingerbread. Now motorola would be smart to release it since the only phones that offer gingerbread are the nexus phones

Don't hold your breath xD I guess this might be the HSUPA update.
Hopefully it is the real deal.
Only thing I'm wondering if this is just a HSUPA update, or if there's more included. Hopefully they don't break root again.
Just received my email as well, I was about to start a topic, but I guess I wasn't the first one to receive it
Personally, I think I will say no to beta testing, as I enjoy running GreyBlur/GingerBlur and having root access much more than running their bloated updates.
Of course, if this beta update gives some Gingerbread lovin', I may change my tune...after all, we've always got the older SBF's to fall back on!
I doubt that this will only be an HSUPA update. AT&T is also going to be enabling sideloading due to the Amazon problem. I sure hope it includes fixes for the Audio issues too.

"Breaking root" is on the to-do list of every official OTA update, unfortunately, so you can count on that.
I can't wait to update! Im always excited by updates haha. I don't care if it breaks root access.

As am I. I just wish they'd give out the release notes ASAP.
Because if this is HSUPA, I'll be glad.
If it were HSUPA + Gingerbread, I'd be ecstatic. Motoblur or not, considering the Blur that Droid X owners now have.
Recieved my e-mail, too. While i kinda doubt it'd be Gingerbread (although i wouldn't complain for a second if it were), i'm still kinda keeping my hopes up that if it IS the HSUPA update, and AT&T really DID want to test HSUPA on the 4G phones to see if their network could handle it prior to enabling it on everyone's phone... that they were the ones who kinda forced Moto's hand in keeping the bootloader locked. I know it's like wishing your Prius would turn into a Tesla.... but that's my feeling and i'm momentarily sticking to it.
are most of you guys going to sign up for it?
Delete please

I signed up also.
Honestly, I highly doubt AT&T ever intended on giving us HSUPA. I think they were hoping they could just put us all off until HSPA+ was available in all areas and reserve HSUPA for Iphones. Not until we complained (like mad) did they even start to look at the issue. The press that we gave them made them give it to us also.
