3.1 update is another 2weeks away - Acer Iconia A500

Just got off the phone with Ace...and the tech said 3.1 update not for another 2 weeks. What is up with Acer?

Good thing I'm not impatient. 3.0.1 already sports all the features I need, I'll just grab the 3.1 update when it arrives for the performance enhancements.

I'm not impatient. But for $520 it have a lot of problems...and this is my sec one. But right now it's the only one that have usb that out now.

1.) If you have problems and can't wait go for a custom rom. I don't have any issues with GPS. I had an issue with wifi but I found a rom that doesn't have it and it works nicely.
2.) If you don't like custom roms wait but don't be impatient because we're in the same boat and steaming about it won't help anyone and it sure won't speed up the rom delivery.
Those are basically your only two options.

Sorry to hear u paid $520( hope it's 32gb) mine was $450(16gb) with tax picked up, and I too am very happy...hate waiting. But, I have waited months to get the iconia on release day...what's another couple weeks for the official update
Mine works really good since the last ota update. 3.1 should hopefully just be icing on my cake.

This is true. If you do not want to wait then by all means try out the custom ROMs. The Devs are doing some good work, but not one of the ROMs are perfect. I personnaly will wait for the OTA. By then all the root tools should be doing good and I will be able to tweak my tab what little I do. All this fuss at Acer will not change a thing. For those that are swapping or planning to swap out thier Acer for one of the other brands, more power to you. They also are having thier issues and they already have 3.1. Chill out and enjoy the day.

But make sure you backup or you might never see the real and sweet OTA from acer.
I recommend against custom roms. The ones I've tried are bloated and bugged. Sure, the changes are there and you will feel the wait was worth it (especially if you browse xda a lot... wtf is wrong with this site??).
So far I regret updating. I don't know if I can go back from 3.1 to 3.0. If I can't I might be stuck on custom roms for a while...

And I checked now, it's no issue to go back as long as you have the backup.

Call back get another tech and you will likely get another answer, there techs are likely outsourced and have no idea what is going on at acer on the dev side of things.
So you guys need to stop getting all worried about 1 guy on the internet who talked to 1 tech about the update.

I'm not sure if you read. You say 3.1 GPS didn't work for you - but it works fine for many others. Sounds like a fault with your tablet or your user, not your ROM.

2 weeks is not a long time. Why do people insist that they should have everything immediately.
Once you get 3.1 you will be wanting the next version.

There's just WAY too much crying going on nowadays.
It's like I'm on howardforums all over again.

The reason why I haven't gone to custom ROMs is because I am not too experienced with these things and I don't want to brick my tablet, and because I keep seeing this or that that's broken in custom ROMs. I got tired of such hassles after running Linux for 10 years so now I'll just rather wait for the official release.
Besides, even if it was 2 weeks still it's not really THAT long; the most notable feature in 3.1 is the support for more USB peripherals, but that's more-or-less all, and if you don't need that then there should be no issues with you just hanging around patiently. Of course though, there are also people who are literally dying to get their USB gamepads working, but.. well, that's their prerogative, it's up to them to figure out if it is worth waiting the 2 weeks or taking the risk of going custom ROM - way.

And fair enough, if you're happy with 3.0 no point playing round with a custom update. Having said that, the overclocking, battery saving, and significantly smoother browser brought by a custom 3.1 has been very much worth it for me.

Root in 10 min, what next?

I was wondering if someone could help me out. It's been a while since i've been to the site, seems like lots of advancements have been made. So far i've rooted my phone using the "root in 10 min" tutorial. Once this is done, what else must I do before I can start flashing the froyo Rom?
Welp
Different people will recommend different things. My view is, if you went the 10 minute route, which supplanted well over a month ago with a much easier method, then going thru the hurdles of applying the beta radio to get the beta froyo may not be the best idea for you.
No offense, by the way ... I have read over and over about 3G connectivity issues, and tons of bugs in the (beta) radio and the (beta) leaks, so I am going to stand by and wait for the OTA and then decide what to do ...

Gotcha, thanks for the advice. Maybe I'll wait until froyo for the incredible is officially released, and a version based on that is released here.
In terms of getting my phone ready to be flashed, knowing that i've completed all the steps for rooting through the "root in 10 min" method, how do u recommend me to proceed?
...
Do nothing. Wait for the OTA to be released, and then wait until unrEVOked looks at it decides what can and can't be done. Then do what they say.

Sitting on the fence

So here I sit, on the fence, with my rooted stock Epic.
Nothing has really substantiated the rumors of Froyo for the 21st, and that just makes me think it's not coming (and if SamsungJohn was going to finally say something substantial, a yea or nay would be a nice start).
But this is not a thread about the OTA.
I'm just thinking... if OTA is really imminent, then I'll just wait and let the devs work on it. But if it's not... then it's time to look at one of the available ROMs.
ViperRom 4.0.4 looks damn sweet... love the ViperWheel widget... but it was held up from its Monday release (are they waiting for source code drop too?). And there is Midnight and Nebula which I kinda like also.
I guess I could start the process of checking them out.
Or I could just sit here and wait. I'm going out of town this weekend and probably should leave things alone until I get back home.
Until then I ask anyone who is running those ROMs... would I lose Swype if I switch ROMs? I really like Swype...
I am stock/rooted, pretty much in the same situation. Will wait until the end of the month if no stock Froyo materializes will look into roms and modding a bit. I depend on my phone's functions all working for my business and would rather not take a chance that I will lose functionality by flashing to the Froyo leak.
i was waiting like you guys til the other week and i went to bonsai, and everything is working superbly.
I was getting sick of stock rom and 2.1, not being able to have hulu or flash as well as a few apps that are must have like Humans vs aliens as well as Andy-83.
Im now just waiting for the official source so it can be improved, but ive had no issues on bonsai and reccomend it, if you want something fast and clean..
give the latest midnight a shot it works really good just wipe 3x before loading and be happy. swype works for me just have to switch text imput method from gb to swype.
Soooo. Oh., before that... I am so glad I rooted and mod. I ran midnight ... and cut my teeth on the ext4 .... the cwm .... and after root and rom messed around with themes. After my ver of midnight got a few weeks old I switched to bonzai and I love it too... it just works. Wait a few ... but its worth it.
Btw ... will we have to wait a while for the new stock 2.2 to get rooted or... is once root always root? Curious.

ROM's
I spent last weekend loading up all of the different (read more popular) ROM's and the most stable and straight forward one to me was Nebula Seven Sisters. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863154
The developer made it a point of keeping a lot of the stock look and features while improving on what Froyo brought to the table. I did not have any real functional issues with Viper, Midnight or TrulyEpic, it just seemed that Nebula was trying to keep the experience closer to stock than the others.
Other people will say they like the modified skins, the launcher pro, the Viper wheel, etc. For them, that is the case. That is the great thing about the developers of the ROM's, they are doing this to cater to different crowds.
So really, there is no need to wait for Sprint or Samsung here, download Odin, grab some ROM's and have fun with your phone! All I can say is to make Clockwork backups often, it makes the process of going back to the ROM you liked two days ago so much easier!
Randy
could try the Syndicate Rom, for 2.1.... see how fast the 2.2.1 roms WILL be after source... but other than that, they are all stable from what I read, some people have a few issues, depends a lot on you though. If you have a ton of stuff to reinstall after a clean wipe, might as well wait out the weekend, not for an OTA, slim chance there... but just so you have time.... sometimes things take longer, you may go thru 5 roms before you find the one you like... etc.

DK28 is buggy but it is better than 2.1 by far. You really don't lose anything by going with one of the available ROMs right now. Presumably they will all have an update once the new version is sent out from Sprint (whether it be on the 21st or not). If you're running a custom 2.2 ROM, you'll just do a CWM backup, update to the newer version of whichever ROM you like, and then restore your data.
I went back and forth between Quantum and Bonsai ROM today. It takes no more than 10 minutes to fully swap ROMs. Just do it, you'll be glad you did. And if a new version of 2.2 comes out in the next 5 days, it will only take a few minutes (max) of your time to upgrade to it.

Is 7sisters smoother than bonsai?Im asking because I want minimal rom so I can add my own things to it.
Well, I've just flashed DK28 and CWM just finished converting to EXT4. It's party time.
Viper brings some great stuff to the table.
Nebula is stability first, which is important to me since my business and my phone are virtually inseparable.
I also like Midnight's BYOR modular format, keeping bloat to a minimum.
I'll have a fun time with this.

In ur case pull out bettery, put it back in,hold power+vol down+camera to get back into cmw3 and try again.
This will save you some time.
Everyone should be warned of one MAJOR issue. If you use you phone for primary internet access anywhere you go; whether at home or at work or wherever. The tethering drops you no matter what you use at random. It is very frustrating and annoying. If it wasn't for this I'd be 100% satisfied with nebula already; but it isn't the rom's problem, it's with DK28. Some people use wireless tethering but I cannot with 2 different desktops I use my phone for internet connectivity.

Make sure you watch some of Randy Shear's videos on youtube if you're new at this. He very slowly goes through many of the basic steps in putting a new rom on your phone. If you skip a step you cause yourself triple work. Just take your time and watch a few of his video's and just put the rom on your want. His Viper Apoc 4.0.2 video is excellent.

Recieved a 2.2 Transformer - how to update

Heya there! Seems like I'm one of the unlucky ones who got a 2.2 Transformer. Is there a safe way to install one of the 3.1 roms on those? I don't just want to go ahead and update the thing with like, Primordial, because it might break it if the partitioning is different.
I would keep it as is or sell it on eBay. That is a RARE tablet!
It might be rare, but it's pretty unuseable as a tablet. That's not really helping me. And I don't think It'd sell any better than normal ones on ebay, it's after all well known what's inside the system by this point.
Apologies. My answer was not helpful to you.
I do not think that you will have an issue just taking the leaked HC 3.1 and just installing it over your 2.2 install. Be sure to do a Nandroid backup first.......and if you are able to....post it here for the devs to play with.
Can anyone else confirm that this will not harm his tablet?

yes, it is possible. not sure if it is public yet.
Wait, some of these TFs come with Froyo? Lol, seriously? I hope I misunderstood that.
Some (I think 5 are known by now) did indeed. It's an early version of Froyo that has a lot of apps for testing the different hardware of the transformer preinstalled, but is otherwise... Well, Froyo, not Honeycomb ^^
Also having problems installing it here... I figure I need to somehow replace the recovery, so I can use cwm, but I can't figure out how to do it. This Transformer also comes with a Fastboot option, so maybe there's more to it.
I can assure you that you would probably pull more money for it on ebay than you would for a regular transformer. Not to mention, several people who purchased tablets that had 2.2 on it were contacted by ASUS and we given the option to replace it and I think they got some kind of bonus for turning it in. I can certainly imagine they don't want their in house programs leaking out to other companies or the public.
Return it to the retailer or call Asus.
You're not the first that posted about getting 2.2.
It's useless, don't bother selling it on eBay, they charge 9% for things over $400+ and PayPal charges 3%, It's really not worth selling it.

[Q] Where to start

I'm putting this in general because there is no Q&A, why is that?
I'm going to be receiving the x-former in a couple of days, and I just wan to know where to start.
Should I just leave it alone, or root?
Should I custom ROM it up?
I also have a Samsung Captivate with CyanogenMod 7, currently in nightly. My point is I'm not new to the android game, I just want your opinion, is there and need to bring my x-former to the dark side, or is it already capable enough?
I would suggest you try it out for a while and see if you need to root it. Unlike my phones and Nook, I have found no reason to root my transformer.
Hi!
Before receiving it I thought that first thing I'd be doing upon receiving my TF was going to be get it rooted. Actually I haven't needed rooting it until now.
I'd recommended you updated it OTA to 3.1 if necessary and then simply enjoying it. If time comes that make you think you need rooting then go ahead.
Enjoy yur new TF.
Regards.
I like the other posters, Have not rooted or Modded my Transformer. I was a big G Tablet user/fan, but the Transformer blows it away for about the same Retail Price. The stock 3.1 (Via OTA update) really makes this a great tablet. I have not seen any reason for me to ROOT (Other than Supplament WIFI for Ad-Hoc teathering) and maybe CWM Backup. I am going to wait for a while for things to settle down before I go down the Alternate ROMS path. The G tablet was different as it was useless out of the box.

Thanks! My thought has been to just try it, but knowing that I would put a ROM on it, but the Transformer seem solid on its own, from what I have read.
Starting to second guess rooting.
How is this possible, a non rooted android device in MY hands... crazy.
Update to 3.1, find good honeycomb apps (the thread in the apps/theme forum can be very usefull) then enjoy.
Right now, rooting the TF isn't nearly as interesting as it is for phones.
Oh and there's various dual battery widget specificaly made for the TF wich display the battery left in the dock (wich you cannot see otherwise), i suggest you grab one as soon as you can.

Did Acer kill the Iconia?

It just seems like they made it impossible to root , reverting back is fine I suppose and searching for other roms (which may or may not be stable ,use at your own risk) !
Ive seen some of the smartest people in XDA and I cant seem to figure out why other tablets using the same updates have been rooted but not the iconia ? The writing is on the wall for this tablet , expect to see a new version soon (just in time for Christmas)!
First, wrong section; you should know better by now.
Second, just because Acer have made it a bugger to root, doesn't mean the tablet is dead. It's absolutely useable without being rooted, and 99% of consumers don't actually give a monkeys about rooting, or even know what it actually is.
Hell, we get plenty of people on here asking what it is or what it's for...
New iconia is scheduled for Dec release but may get pushed back to january.
Interesting, you are posing that on XDA. We dont believe in Impossible to Root device. That is why people come to XDA; How to break what seem unbreakable or unlock what seem unlock-able. Just give some time, some genius will always find a way to kick some Corporate teeth in.
well wasnt it acer excuse not unlock the bootloader since honeycomb was not open source. I think that was one of their statements, so once we get updated to ICS maybe we all can start with a tweet assault on them again.
Not sure about u guys but I feel more comfortable recommending the xoom or asus tab just cause they are so open, same goes for those nook colors.

You should look at the older phones like the Desire and before that if you think its hard to root here, you'd probably cry at the thought of creating a gold card.
How people complain that a rooting process that takes all of 15 minutes and a couple of reboots is hard is beyond me. In 3.1 and below all you have to do is download a file from the market. In 3.2 you have to run one update file from recovery, install the aforementioned files from the market, then flash one of the ROMs from here - such as the completely stable completely standard 3.2 ROMs, or the excellent and completely stable Thor ROMs. If that's too difficult for people then maybe they shouldn't be attempting it on something that cost them £300.

LOL - that was exactly was I was thinking after reading the first post. I have got a Desire and rooted it with goldcard etc. - long before the newer and way easier methods were developed.
Yesterday I got my Iconia 501 with Stock HC 3.2 on it and rooting it was a real breeze
Seriously? Near impossible to root? This guy must be slow, because this was just insanely easy... been rooted for months and tried nearly every rom at least once, all easy as pie.

Same thing with the original mytouch. I had to use a gold card and there were no less than 3 times during the process that i thought i had bricked it. i may be permanently scarred.
There have been many times i have rooted other devices including the iconia that i went searching for more steps because it was too easy.
ya i have the Desire S too and waited for ages for it to be rooted, the Iconia only took me a few minutes, don't really see what the difficulty is, thought this was an old thread haha
ne too lol i was like...all i did was install an app, go to recovery, and flash rom ( give or take a few steps) and i did that the day i got it (sept 2011) and it took a few a mins, this thread confused the heck outta me lol

When you learn to find it and come and post it here? It's pretty well documented, and other than the crap threads that get posted in here like this one, pretty well organized.

This is inbwrong thread sorry for my post all
I rooted my tablet right after I got it in May. Then when the 3.2 update came out, I went back to stock unrooted and ran that way until this morning when I realized I wanted to change my navigation buttons. Downgraded, rooted, installed CWM and flashed the rooted stock 3.2 and was back in business in like 20 minutes maybe. Would've been done quicker, but I had to pause to make some more coffee. Didn't even lose any of my data or apps. I don't know how you measure easy, but by my measure, its a cake walk. A cake walk where you actually win cake, instead of awkwardly shuffling around in a circle with strangers thinking that if you win it might all be worth it, only to have some snot nosed little turd walk away with the very cake you wanted, and you go home and weep gently into your pillow because you never win, and no one ever seems to see that all you want is to be loved, oh God, why can't someone just love you...sorry I digress.
lol i rooted mine like the first 15 minutes that it was out of the box. I don't like not overclocking

Back to the OT! Did Acer Kill the Iconia?
Here it is.... Plain and simple.... Acer is killing the the Iconia since they are taking their time to produce good accessories for it. Also, what were they thinking in giving the power adapter such a short cord?
Other than that.... I love my A500, and would not mind upgrading to a the Tegra3 version.
