Can someone please help clarify info on the GSM Galaxy Tab 10.1 for me? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

So I'm interested in getting an unlocked Galaxy Tab 10.1 w\ GSM support, so I went out on the intertubes and searched it. I'm seeing there's a 10.1 and a 10.1v that have "GSM support" which I'd assume are quad band and will work with GSM frequencies around the world?
I'm curious if anyone knows where online or offline these can be purchased. I read that people had bought them from Vodafone UK, but going to their site it shows they're not even released yet.
Thanks!

3G (GSM) version of Galaxy Tab 10.1 is not yet released. It will be released in Europe in the beginning of July. Can be purchased then from Amazon.de or notebooksbilliger.de for around 600 EUR (3G, 16 GB version, no microSD slot)

Does Amazon.de deliver to the US?
What's the diff between the 10.1v and the 10.1? I remember reading that one was the thinner model, but can't remember which was which.
Thanks!

Not sure about Amazon.de delivering to US, but most probably they dont.
Because Amazon.com does not deliver to Europe either
The new one is 10.1.
The 10.1v is the old one (thicker), so don't buy this 10.1v.

Hmm, good info on 10.1 vs 10.1v.
I guess a trip to London will be in my future... just sucks they don't release these models in the US... we get hosed with the USD>EUR or USD>GBP conversion, lol

Why are you telling people not to buy the 10.1v? 10.1v is superior..

Elaborate...

Um, 10.1V Had around an hour more battery. 3MP Camera compared to 8MP is nothing to 'lol' about either.
EDIT* The only thing better about the 10.1 is that's it lighter and thinner.

10.1v is the old model, why do you want to buy older model?
10.1v is still not officially updated to Android 3.1, and we don't know when it will get the update?
10.1v is thicker, this is personal and I like the look of the new 10.1
10.1v has 6800 mAH battery, the new one has 7000 mAH
10.1 has cool flip cover:
http://www.androidcentral.com/flip-case-samsung-galaxy-tab-101
Sure, the 10.1v has better rear camera (8MP vs 3MP), but I don't need that camera as I have my Android phone
So, those are some of my reasoning that enough for me to make decision to not buy the old 10.1v!

Or you can quote specs like they mean anything @ all as far as the battery. Is it really hard to go to Google and see 10.1V has better battery?
VERY good Camera
OR the fact that you can actually use 3G on the 10.1V?

I quoted the mAH number, that's all. Usage pattern might be different for each person, 10 hours yours might be 11 hours OR 9 hours mine
It depends on how do you use your tab, the apps/widgets that you have and the OS version (3.1 vs 3.01).
But, the mAH rate is something you can "compare".
This is the 10.1:
http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxytab/10.1/spec.html
And this is the 10.1v:
http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxytab/10.1v/specification.html
See that? 7000 mAH versus 6860 mAH.
And that's from the official Samsung website.
About 3G, both will have 3G model In Europe, the 10.1 3G will be released first, Amazon.de will have it end of this month.
Or are you saying the 10.1 will not have 3G model?
About the camera, the rear camera, I don't care
As I don't use rear camera on tablet anyway. I will look like an idiot making photo using that big device hehehehe. I use my phone for making photo!
Oh and I really like that cool flip cover of 10.1 !!!! LOL

Can't be mad with your nicely toned reply. But, what I am stating is the 10.1V is in all aspects= the 10.1 and having a 8MegaPixel Cam(Although im not a photo freak) and the ability right now to use a Sim card makes it superior. 3G 10.1 coming next month is not for U.S.....
10.1=10.1V I only am defending the 10.1V because the person told the guy not to buy it like it was a worse product...

Well, I am just stating facts and my opinion regarding both. I think that's clear from what you read here.
As it is my opinion, I think I am free to say that, telling anyone to not buy the older model.
I assume the OP can decide him or her self, whether to buy or not
I am not enforcing or anything. This is an open forum and I give my opinions with all my reasoning.

Odds are also, the GSM version being released in EU will not work on the US 3G bands, rather just the regular GPRS or Edge bands (except for Tmobile in some areas). ATT uses the 850 band, which is not used in EU.

Yeah it's a bummer AT&T has to be so different and difficult :-(
I travel internationally a lot, so I'd love a GSM version that works in most countries... lots easier than trying to find wifi everywhere.

The US version is nearing it's release on at&t:

Oh, I didn't say to buy one!
Just letting those that talked about US releases know that it's near.
Wifi and unlimited 4G phone tether with Sprint works fine for me...

The European 3G version will be quad band, so it will support both EU and US frequencies.
This is the specs from amazon.de.
Some speculation: The US version will use the same chip, doing otherwise would complicate things and that wouldn't make much sense. The FCC only mention the US frequencies because those are the only ones used over there.
I'm planning on getting the AT&T version, and bring it back to Europe in August.

If it goes into the $500 range, they are in the ipad range then. I dont think they can compete with the ipad unless they offer more (which they do) for less!
So, my guess is $399.
yea $399 seems like a fair price..
Apparently a finnish press release (by email) set the price to 949€ (~$1200)... Which is somewhat higher than the "fair" price you wish for... I doubt they will sell very many if that's accurate. And it pisses me off that they didn't toss in a 1280x720 screen... I don't care if Android doesn't support the resolution.. It's not like it's impossible to make it support it, it's OPEN SOURCE.

Phones are phones....look at the iphone, it costs more than the ipad!
Samsung will not make a single dime if they price it more than any ipad!
$399 or less otherwise it will be a big bust for a 7" tablet!
What would be even better is a non-GSM version for $299 so that every Galaxy S user can buy one and teether it when needed.
I thought I wouldn't get the urge to buy another device for a while.... 32GB! of internal storage? 1024 x 600 Resolution? I hate this
Let's see... Europe will get it first, so I could buy that one and be limited to only 1900mhz 3g of AT&T, but it will be easy to switch from sgs phone (take out sim card, put it in tab, done!).
Or I could wait for the verizon version, and probably get skype with it like all the other verizon android devices. But I already have AT&T contract....
Or I could wait for the Canadian Bell version, but I haven't heard anything about that.
A confirmed price and release date would be nice from them.
MORE IMPORTANT:
- This equipment is very similar to our SGS and will be updated to Gingerbread (Android 3.0)
- Someone from Samsung mentioned they're working already in Honeycomb (Android 3.X)!
Long life to SGS is garanteed!
BTW: Did someone find any benchmark figures from the SGT?
Well not really samsung wants to sell phones not software.guess it's for their new flash ship
Just think about how many people will buy it if they think they will get amdroid 3.
So by then samsung can change their mind because the customers paid already.

No, iPad is $640 range sans for the 3G, (there are some reports there will be a wifi-only but I happen to believe the reports that all will have a cell radio, even if coming disabled by default unless sold by a carrier...end part my speculation):
a camera, let alone two
dual band wireless N
expandable storage
pixel density (sacrficing screen size, but increasing holdability and portability)
flash support
...no point in going on, they are going all out, Apple held something back
form factors & OS to be argued, but I think Apple-Central (Engadget) themselves said they like this one for it's one-handed possibilities, better for e-reading due to the pixel density, weight and form factor
I can tell you that it's main competitor in Korea is coming in at less than $300 US without a contract and free on contract (less than $30/month wi-bro contract). This is definitely a better device, but if we can see other non-Apple's doing cheap then we can see this having great options as well.
I definitely expect this in the 400-500 range, $500 is a bit of a shame for people that will go without a data plan, but it is what it is and adds future flexibility.

They won't price these based on exchance rates, that's not how the market works, they price these to what the customers can bear. For example, in England the iPad starts at 429 pounds, in Germany and France the iPad starts at 500 Euro, in the U.S. it starts at $500 USD. Expect Samsung to price according to market as well, and for this to be 400+ Euro.

The iPhone costs more than the base iPad, you are looking at subsidized pricing versus non-subsidized pricing...there's a difference. Again, comparing this to an iPad isn't correct on many levels. First, some people have never been interested in the iPad even if they are mildly or majorly tickled by the idea of having a tablet device. Next, for those who want the GSM version, $400 would be more than $200 cheaper than the iPad, the iPad would be priced more than 50% higher than this! They don't need to undercut them that much, look above and feel free to comment back.

Ooo, now I get to ask my question. I love the Galaxy S, but how many people with a Galaxy S are in the market for this device? I'm really curious, I'd be more tempted by their other offerings in 2011 which will be more feature packed and give me more screen real estate (read, less redundant). I do think the device is sexy, but right now I don't see myself buying one, but am open-minded and want to hear opinions on both sides.
i'll be a nice companion for our phone, to replace a laptop

The screen is based on TFT, instead of AMOLED, which Samsung uses on some of its smartphones. The concession was made to lower the cost of the product and improve battery life, which should last up to eight hours, according to Samsung.
On the front is a 1.3-megapixel camera for video calls or conferencing, and on the back a 3-megapixel camera with a LED lamp. The Tab weighs 380 grams, and measures 19 centimeters by 12 cm by 1.2 cm.

with that screen and camera short coming, i think i'll stick with the Phone version better
If it had Super AMOLED display + 1GB RAM and got 2G+3G removed, I'd be very interested.
However, I think tablets should get cheaper. I mean... netbooks are getting cheaper day by day and you can buy a decent one with $250-300. I know that tablets are more portable and time-efficient since they don't need booting, but the pricing isn't attractive at all.

No thin version for UK, problem importing from US :(

I read a really bad news:

The "thin" version will not come to UK
Probably it will come, but we don't when after the US release.
Anyway, if we import the Galaxy Tab "thin" version from US to Europe, let say UK, we could have an issue with "power" connection, right?
US is using 110v ...
Usually, this is no problem if the power adapter is "generic", which has voltage range between 50v - 240v.
Now, this tablets are using "proprietary charger" connected to proprietary dock, which I can guess this charger will only work in US?
I am pissed if this is true. What's wrong with Samsung! Why can't they release a product faster after announcement, to the whole world!

they've only announced pricing and availability of the 10.1 and 8.9 WiFi. And said that there will be 3G versions but there's no information yet. They're probably working with the carriers right now. They have 2 months to figure it out I'd be surprised if they didn't have it available at the same time as the WiFi version.
theres always ebay
I took that story to mean that Vodaphone would have the thicker ones, not that only the UK will have the thick ones.

I'm really disappointed too if the thin 10.1 tablet doesn't come to UK. Having said that, I really don't think this will be the case because UK would be a popular market for this tablet so Samsung would only be shooting themselves in the foot by not releasing this. We may get it in UK after the US release but I'm fairly confident it will come here.
One thing is for sure, if Samsung take too long releasing it then the uptake won't be as much because there will be news of the next generation of tablets with even better hardware. News is already floating around for Tegra 3 quad core chips due to come out Summery 2011.

Galaxy Tab 10.1 visits the FCC (GT-P7510)

From Engadget:
Yes, this is Samsung's latest 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab alright, not to be mistaken with its thicker 10.1v sibling that's gradually rolling out across Europe and Australia. How can you tell? Well, the older Honeycomb tablet bears the GT-P7100 codename, whereas this FCC filing and a Wi-Fi Alliance certificate show off the GT-P7510 moniker for this WiFi-only 10.1. Oh, and the drawing of the backside -- pictured after the break -- is a dead giveaway, of course. What remains unknown is the mysterious 1GHz dual-core CPU inside this razor-thin slate, but given the release of this FCC application, it probably won't be long before all is revealed.
Looks like it's coming to the USA very soon... =)

My exact problem. Asus will supposedly have transformer with scandi keyboard in stock in 3 weeks and the price for tablet+keyboard/dock is 599e. That's a steal when something like Xoom 32GB wifi that got crappier screen costs 699 over here.
But still the 10.1 just got something about it. In the end it probably just goes to what tablet is out first here.

Does that mean that us in europe wont be getting the 10.1 and are stuck with the 10.1v until after the american release???
It makes sense in terms of stock availability for launch I guess

Sorry yeah, I was talking about european release for the slimmer version. Not sure what the version number is

GT-N5100 Note 8.0 3G

Does anyone know when the 3G version will be released? I have read in many reviews that battery life on the WiFi is not that impressive, do you think Samsung would ship the 3G version with a larger battery?
in Malaysia the Note 8 is launched with the 3G version already, on Friday.
all specs remain the same throughout
Shame it could have done with a bigger battery by all accounts. I'll still get one, (im)patiently waiting for a 3G version, any colour, any storage size in the UK.
I have been using Galaxy note 8 n5100 as my main phone since i bought it last april 13 here in the Philippines, the battery is pretty good it can last 10 to 12hour, with moderate calls and always connected data, autosync on moderate browsing and email with minimal gps use, the battery on this phone is way better than galaxy tab 7 plus which it replaced as my primary phone

Thanks for your mini review! Waiting for it to launch in India.
How much did it cost you (in USD)? Are any freebies like PlayStore credit or Dropbox available as well?

Currently, Samsung does not seem to have any plan or intention to launch a phablet version of the device in the US. You'll likely either have to wait for them to come to their senses, or buy an international version.

I'm interested for the the international version.
Heard anything about that?
The 3G price would seem to be hovering around the $800 mark based on eBay listings for the GT-N5100, but it's availability still seems up in the air. Hopefully someone outside of the US can point you towards a reputable international seller with stock.
Wow. It will be so expensive.
Thanks for your help.
The 3G version retails around $580 in Asia. Prices will come down on eBay very soon.
I'm waiting for it in the US as well. There's a site called Negri Electronics located in Las Vegas, that has a pre order page for it, listed at $660 at the time of this post. From what I've heard, the international version should be released April 30, but I haven't found any confirmation. As far as releasing s US version, I'm sure they'll release an LTE version sooner or later for use with CDMA networks like Verizon and US Cellular, but if you plan on getting it going on T-Mobile (like me), it'll only run on their 1900mhz frequency, which allows phone calls, but mostly 2g data speeds, unless you're in an area where they've refarmed the 1900mhz frequency to run HSPA speeds. Good luck and let's hope they bring this bad boy to T-Mobile!

^Yeah, I went ahead and put in my preorder for the 16GB 3G + WiFi N5100 from Negri Electronics last week. It was the least expensive site that I could find, and I know that they are a reputable seller. And since they are in Las Vegas shipping is relatively fast to the Los Angeles area.
Up until early yesterday the site said that the "Expected Availability" date was April 23rd, but just this morning (Los Angeles time) I checked again, and now it says May 8th. Gotta wait a bit longer now and I'm chomping at the bit as it is, LOL. Still, I wish it were closer to just ~$100 (or less) of a premium for the 3G/Phone version instead of the blatant raping that it is.
And we all know that Samsung would sell EXPONENTIALLY more of these if they matched the iPad Mini pricing, and actually released the 32gb versions at the same time as the 16gb base model, and for just $30-$40 more. At least we DO have the option to add microSD cards at a reasonable cost, but really Samsung?...a $100 more for a measly 16gb additional? That's just cwazy. (Yes, I have the same issue with Apple regarding this!) And Samsung makes the RAM memory chips so it's probably something like 50¢ more in actual production cost. :/
Yes. I still ordered one, but it was not an easy (or rational) decision that I made, LOL! It's actually just a bit depressing to contemplate spending so much for their "shiny plastic products", when the competition offer much nicer physical or cosmetic designs and materials (IMO), and at less cost.
I really believe that Samsung creates amazing products, and ergonomically I prefer most of their products over Apple's in that regard. However, they did miss the mark with the speaker and capacitive button placement on the Note 8.0. And I don't know what the designers were thinking with the camera protruding so much that the tab rocks from side-to-side when placed on a table, desk, etc. :/ So much for accurate use of the S-pen (the hero feature of this device)!
IMO, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 is the ONLY Samsung mobile electronics device that I can think of where I feel they came even close to matching the build quality and physical design of their competition. But once again, they priced it way out of the market. :/
And I don't mind the use of plastics one bit if they are used properly like the polycarbonates used in some of the higher-end Nokia and HTC devices. I truly feel that when Samsung gets their build quality up to par that the vast majority of the public will have no problem paying Apple-level prices (or more), and they'll sell a bazillion just like Apple does. But they're demanding premium prices, even over what Apple demands, but for an inferior physical design/build quality (IMHO). Why does Samsung not "get this"?!? People expect a BMW or Mercedes when they pay the price for one, not a Citroen (no offense to any Citroen owners).
With the Galaxy S4, if Samsung had just stepped-up the build quality alone (plus the 13mp camera), and nothing more as compared to the GS3, I would have purchased it. But with the same 'ol shiny plastic, its just a "Meh" product to me.
Also, I was really hoping that they would have included the hardware FM Radio tuner on the International version of the Note 8.0, just as they did on the Int'l SGS2, SGS3, Note (N7000), and Note 2. Initially, I didn't think that I would use the FM tuner at all, but I've found that I use it quite a bit...saves quite a bit on data as opposed to streaming.
LOL, sorry that I veered so off topic, haha. /END OF RANT
I am very much looking forward to using the new Note 8.0!

I suspect the a good chunk of the additional cost here is the license for the Wacom digitizer and related technology. Samsung is being extremely aggressive in their pricing and product diversity as a way to combat Apple, so I don't think they would risk letting a well loved brand like Apple undercut them without reason.

Agree, but Do you think that even more diversification would help Samsung?
I think they should think of introducing a Note 8.0 sans the digitiser. Then they can really target the iPad Mini. It would still be a great product as many online reviews (Engadget) claim so.
That would be the true spiritual successor to the 7.7

Sorry, not officially sold in US, so you'll have to rely rely on 3rd party importers and will be more expensive unless you know someobe in Europe or Asia that can ship you one.

^This.
Negri Electronics' price is the least expensive that I've found for the 3G version from a U.S. importer...currently at $597.50. But they do have excellent customer service and are a reputable seller. I've ordered "International" items from them several times. GSM Nation and Expansys USA are good as well, but usually more expensive.
Just a heads up to those of you in the U.S. that are waiting for the Int'l 3G/Phone version...It looks as if my preordered Int'l Note 8.0 3G+WiFi (N5100) should be shipped very soon from Negri Electronics (Las Vegas) here in the U.S. FYI, Negri Electronics is showing these as "IN STOCK" at the moment. Your browser user agent must be in "Desktop View/Mode" to see the full details of stock availability. EDIT: they are now listed as "BACKORDER".
http://negrielectronics.com/samsung-n5100-galaxy-note-8-0-16gb-3g-unlocked-white.html
My credit card company sends me email alerts every time there is a transaction over $300, and they just sent me a Transaction Alert for a charge from N.E. I've had a preorder in for the Int'l Note 8.0 since April 16th, and IME Negri Electronics will only charge your credit card when they have stock in hand ready to ship, so my fingers are crossed. I'll keep you updated.
P.S. If you register an account at Negri and put the item in your shopping cart but do not follow through with the purchase (just leave it in your "shopping Cart"), in a few days Negri will email you with a $10 OFF coupon code for the item in your cart. And if you wait another few days they will send you a $20 off coupon code. It's not much, but every little bit helps as this item is so expensive already. Good luck.
I did wanted one of these for everyday devices but it's way too expensive for me. There's nothing wrong with my skyrocket I have now but I want upgrade. And my wife wants my phone so I guess I'll have to look else elsewhere.
Perhaps in a month or two the price could drop to within my reach?
One can only hope.....

Yeah, it is expensive. No doubt. But if you compare it with the price of a contract-free Unlocked Int'l Galaxy Note II GT-N7100 (which it is almost identical to hardware-wise except for the display, rear camera+LED Flash, and FM Tuner) it is a very similar price, at least here in the U.S.
I paid 608.00 on Ebay from a US seller with 1000+ feedback.
Picked up GeekSquad Spill and Drop insurance for another 50-something bucks.

I don't know how well it's going to receive around the world. This device isn't most powerful or innovative phablet that has yet to come out from Samsung but it is rumored to be more expensive then Apple mini. I don't care if it doesn't have Octa core or 3gb of ram but I am still over the fence about Samsung thinks because it has a S pen it can crush Apple and it's iSheeps without being most powerful and priced lower then mini. Don't get me wrong I love Samsung and I stand by I will only buy Samsung phones since I went thought several HTC(UGH) and Motorola(UGH) and Apple(double UGH) but I think Samsung is being just too ambitious this time. We will see how everything goes with in few months. If this succeed and still priced high, I will go to cheaper option and buy P3100 and wait for something reasonable from Samsung.

Performance-wise, there is not a single problem with the Galaxy Note 8.0, unless you want it solely for playing the most demanding games, which the iPad Mini isn't ideal for either, so? And in some markets such as India, the 3G+WiFi Note 8.0 is only $20 USD more than the iPad Mini 3G+WiFi. For that $20 you get the S-Pen/Wacom Digitizer, PHONE & TEXT capability, and the TV/DVR/STEREO Remote Control IR Blaster! I'd say that is pretty compelling.
My other thoughts regarding the competition?...If Samsung would have made the BUILD QUALITY of the Note 8.0 similar to the HTC ONE or iPad Mini, then I think they would have a chance at being a true competitor in the general public's eyes.
And why not put the "old" 8MP Camera from the S3 in it to sweeten the deal? And please don't tell me that a good camera is useless in a tablet. When you need it, you need it! I can't tell you how many soccer moms and dads I've seen using their iPads to capture photos and videos of their kids between browsing the web or "Facebook'ing" during the game. Or taking photos of products, clothes, or comparison shopping by scanning barcodes and QR codes...or "scanning" business or personal receipts into financial apps.
I also think that they should really advertise and push the IR Blaster/Remote Control feature of this device! Just about everyone that can afford a tablet has an HDTV and cable/satellite service. Having the IR Blaster/WatchOn/Peel functionality, combined with the S-Pen features, true Multi-Window multitasking, and cellular Phone/Texting capability make this tablet/phablet truly unique in the marketplace.
BUT, they need interactive or video displays in the stores like Best Buy that demonstrate these unique features with a "Try that with an iPad...they can't do it" type of message. Everybody already knows what an iPad can do. But when comparing tablets in hand, customers just see a screen with a bunch of icons, they don't know the awesome things that ONLY the Note 8.0 can do!
They also need to advertise as above (like in the new S4 "swimming pool" commercial) how older folks and children can use this device, in addition to the unique advantages it gives a business person. And they need to give developers much more incentive to create unique and top notch tablet-specific apps, with and without S-pen functionality. And they also need to stop trying to copy or duplicate the Google apps that are already available and better! They need to realize that their tablets are nothing without the Google ecosystem.
/END OF ANOTHER RANT, LOL! Sorry.

You have the option of third party suppliers. The other option is to wait a little longer. The LTE version is close to being released. There is a video on You Tube showing it but it's in Chinese and I can't understand it. I will say it looks good though. I'm waiting to see what frequencies the 4G version will come with as well.
I'm pretty sure the only LTE version announced is one that does not use US LTE bands and still would only give HSPA speeds to most people.
^You are most likely correct. I would be surprised if this model had LTE bands that are usable in the U.S. Perhaps if the proper antennas and radio amps are already in the hardware, a crafty developer could port the radio software from the AT&T Galaxy Note II?
UPDATE on my purchase from Negri Electronics:
I received an email from Negri Electronics today with a FedEx Tracking Number for the Galaxy Note 8.0 3G+WiFi (GT-N5100).
However, it is being shipped directly from Hong Kong and not from the N.E. location in Las Vegas, so it will take a few more days to get here than I originally expected (Los Angeles area).
Other devices that I have purchased from them have shipped from the L.V. location so I didn't expect this when I placed my preorder. If I had known ahead of time, I might have ordered one from eBay seller 'never-msrp' in Houston, TX.
Either way I'm looking forward to getting it. I just wanted to let anyone else who has preordered from Negri, or is thinking about it, know what's up.

I've been searching like crazy trying to see if anyone's been able to do this with the Note 8 or 10.1, but I can't seem to find anyone that's been able to do it. I know there's a way to enable T-Mobile's AWS bands for a rooted AT&T N2, but as far as enabling any LTE or AWS bands on a N8 or N10.1 (non-Verizon), I haven't had any luck. I'm not sure they're even the same radios
