Thinking of buying a new Dell Streak...Have some questions... - Streak 5 General

I used to own one last year but sold it as it was locked and even when using the so called sim card. One day it would work and the next I would get no network...
It was not usable and sadly I had no choice to sell it...
At the time I paid around £300 for it as it was new at the time...
I was having a look on ebay the other day and saw quite a few of them for as cheap as £240, brand new sealed and unlocked.
To me this is a bargain for a 5'' phone having a beefy 1gb cpu, 512 ram and a 16gb memory card included...
I currently own the HTC Desire HD. I've had it for the last 4 months. While I'm happy with it, there are quite a few drawbacks.
The battery is ****, no matter what, it will last MAX 24 hours with minimal use.
there are times when the battery suddenly drops from 30% to under 20, then 10 and it cuts off.
Once the battery gets to 15% it will last no more than a few hours, WITHOUT any use at all.
It simply drops from 15% to zero in a matter of 2-3 hours and this is in standby.
Lastly the volume is extremely poor, when talking on the phone I can barely hear the other person and when looking at videos you cannot hear anything even at max volume...
Previously when I had my Dell Streak, battery was the best i've ever had from a large phone, once got 7 days out of it with minimum use, this was based on 12 hours standby per day and maybe a few mins use and no internet/videos...
This works out to be 3-4 days in a row, I think this is amazing considering the screen brightness was also on 70%
Some people say the Streak's battery is crap but I completely disagree...
With regards to screen/image quality I recon the Dell's screen and colour/black/gamma quality was a lot better than the HTC Desire HD.
Finally the Streaks's loudspeaker was quite loud. Call colume was loud and clear, videos/music playback was very good...
My MAIN 2 questions are:
1 - Is it worth getting a Streak and selling my HTC HD2 based on the above info?
2 - Some people say using Dell's stock 2.2 is slightly slow, sluggish and using a CUSTOM made rom is a lot smoother & faster.
Should this be the case, please could you name me the top 2-3 recommended roms to use on xda, different people have different opinions but I would like something basic, clean, reliable, smooth and close to the stock rom.
I am not bothered about the camera, video camera, main aspect of wanting the Streak is the shear large screen, excellent battery & looks/build quality.
Looking forward in hearing what other have to say.
Thanks in advance.

I got mine last week for £199 brand new sealed + unlocked from carphone warehouse on a clearance deal - sadly I think the deal is over now.
I think the battery is excellent, I'm a heavy user, the phone is always on with data and / or wifi and emails, twitter updates etc. and I could happily get 3 days out of it. I struggle to get 1 day from my Nexus S.
Most people (and they would be right) will point you to using Streakdroid 1.9 although I'm using the simple streak rom (it's in the dev section) which is seemingly a bit slower than Streakdroid but I really like it.
If you like the big screen and can live with a larger phone then I'd say it's great

You have already used streak before and looks like u r comfortable with the size.
I think u should go with streak.
There are not many roms to work with.
Currently
1. Lite rom - Stripped down version of stock and default orientation is portrait.
2.Stock
3.Streakdroid.
People are divided between these different roms.
U should try them and see what fits u the most.

wow, that's a wicked deal, giveaway price, wish I saw that offer, would of bought it on the spot...
I have no problem in living with a larger phone. It can just about fit in my jeans pocket...
Choosing a new rom isn't easy, I will look into it...
thanks for the reply.

I will probably go with a lite rom. I have many apps already bought and will copy the apk's of them over from my Desire HD over to the streak.
The lite rom is best for me since I want no extra junk/apps and will use my own ones.
Which lite roms would you suggest drgopoos?
Anything with minimal apps/addons would be better since it should run faster than another rom with lot's of unwanted and unneccesary addons...
On top of this it should be better with regards to battery life...
thanks once again.

How do you want to do the deal?
What guarantee is there that I will receive the item and what guarantee you will receive yours?
I do not know of any safe/guaranteed ways of doing this.

So whats next....

My poor touch HD is starting to feel the strain, being patched up with countless ROM updates has kept it going but shortly my Contract will be up with O2 and i feel it may be time to part ways with the old girl
Soo, my question to everyone is, where do we go from here?
HD2? im not so sure, its a fraction too big and apart from being a wee bit snapier its not much difference, and its been out a while now so will there be a new one on the horizon, maybe?
Acer F1, ive heard some good things about this but i hear the build quality is pretty shoddy
an thats my pretty much out of ideas, basicly i want the Touch HD with a faster CPU, faster graphics, same size screen thats not going to be out of date in a couple of months. With all this Windows phone 7 business and android getting new devices left right an centre ive stopped hearing about decent new Windows mobile devices.
has anyone got any ideas, we must all be starting to think the same, the Old girl has been out for years!
I'm in the same boat
Also with the Touch HD - been eyeballing the HTC Desire - wanna go Android now - looks like a great choice!
HD2 for me, no question. The way I see it, this phone will remain the main WinMob legacy phone for all developments in the future due to its spec/availability. I foresee WinMob7 will be fully ported for it, as will a fully working version of Android, it's only a matter of time. Imagine a phone that could boot into Win6.5, Win7 & Android!
In the mean time I'm more than happy with the functionality of my HD (i only ever use Coreplayer, Opera 10, RSSHub, TomTom/GoogleMaps & a couple others), so an updated version that does the same, but better, will do me fine.

I like the look of the performance of the F1, size, battery life, resistive screen and built in stylus, I had an F900 at the same time as my HD and it was close enough build quality wise that I would try the F1, pocketnow has a review on it and mentions build quality, but without going into specifics, check out the HD2 v F1 benchmarks and comments from the guy that has owned both the HD2 and neotouch as to which one has considerably better performance [read both reviews and comment sections] Brandon miniman tends to have a bit of a sour opinion of anything quality wise with acer or e-ten and a bit of a rose tinted view of anything HTC, but definitely worth a read.
I've gone with the Desire, ordered 30 mins ago and should be with on Monday. This weekend is going to draaag!

So - how is it? Glad you made the switchover? Any thoughts you'd like to share?
When my Blackstone finally dies or my contract expires next winter, I will go for Android or iPhone. And while flashing new ROMs was quite amusing for the nerd in me, I'm really looking forward to a phone that just works
Windows Mobile is dead, just compare the application markets of Android/Apple to WinMo...
same here, although I just recently got my HD, once its worn or when I get the opportunity to change I'll go the desire or equivalent awesome phone at that period of time.
And...?
Come on guys, there are loads of us with HDs at the end of contract facing exactly the same predicament - what to go for next!
If you've already made the switch to a Desire or HD2 or something else, how are you getting on? Why are you happy with your new choice (if you are)?
Like Dazza9075 I want more of the same - HD with faster CPU and graphics and no less in screen size. Liked the Desire in my local Orange shop but somehow not happy dropping that tiny bit in screen size. If you are procrastinating because of what is around the corner, tell us what you are more likely to go for and why!

My Touch Slide is a beast

I have found myself fortunate enough to get my hands on a My Touch Slide and I have fallen in love. I have yet to find a good enough reason no to move ove from my poor over used first gen My Touch. My trusted old companion has been handed down to my 8 year old (with a tear in my eye). This thing flies like there is no tomorrow. MAJOR improvement over its predecesor. If anyone has a question, I will anwswer as best as I can. I am not a developer, but don't fall in the idiot category either. Here goes a list of my pluses and minuses.
Keyboard is a four row, five would have been nice but handles smoothly enough
Screen is very quick to pick up my touch.
Amazingly fast, zero lag after 5 days of use.
Screen is not much bigger, but it is noticible.
Has a good feel in hand. Solid. Lacks that "plastic" feel.
Great camera, flash does wonders for it.
Sound is good with no distortion at full volume.
After a year with my old My Touch, it was hard to let go, but well worth it. Massive improvement. This thing works flawlessly so far. Can wait to see what it can do once rooted. OK. Let the questions comence. I'll do the best I can.
I've had my MT3GS for a lil over a month now and I feel the same way. The software is still in beta and will have a major 1-2 OTA updates before the device hits stores to clear out all bugs. Upgrading from a G1, this thing is heaven.
how is the camera? On my mytouch 1.2/le I hate the lag the camera has between pressing the button and when the picture gets taken.
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
Camera is on par with the best of them. Clean and clear. The flash works great. No more three second delay.
So, is it worth the upgrade from the LE/1.2? I may consider buying it.
I would say it is worth the upgrade...the speed increase in phenomenal and you can't beat a hardware keyboard.
This is what I expected android to be. The OS has some grpwing to do, but this is a BIG step forward. It responds like you would expect a new handset to.
any way that u can confirm cpu and ram and can u possibly make a vid if u dont have a youtube i will upload it and give u ALL the the credit
If anyone can give me a brief explanation on how to, I would love to. Nothing in the setings menus as to the resources available. I have looked up and down.
can u install task killer and tell us how much memory is left after killing all tasks?
and how is the battery?and install linpack and can u give us your results?
Just curious, how do y'all come across it?
Installed Estrongs task manager. Killed everything possible, nothing left alive, comes out to 302 megs free. Gotta run to work. Ill get the rest first chance.
Results from Linpack are as follows with everything running as I have it day to day.
MFLOPS: 2.66
Time: 2.03 Seconds
Norm Res: 3.36
precision: 2.220446049250313E-16
Battery is usualy about 46% at the end of my day. Lot of xda, face book syncing, text, 20 min of phone use on average, random web and the display on about 70% of the time and set to full brightness. I had about the same life out of my Cyanogen rom on the 1.0 Mytouch. Huge speed difference though (probably the ram). I have this thing running all day with no resarts the first 3 days and no slowing it down.
Another thing. Any possibility of doing a nandroid backup without having root on this unit? I have not had a software update an would love to get a backup of a totaly fresh state before I get one just in case it might prove usefull down the line.
I can definitely agree with everything
said so far about the myTouch Slide.
I've had the phone for a few days now
and am in LOVE. I'm extremely excited for
the launch of this phone sometime in June.
So far I've used the Genius button about 75 - 100
times while driving to text, find local store numbers, etc.
and it has YET to mess up...even when there was loud
background conversation it still picked up everything
perfectly.
Wow so the price for the phone was put out today by tmobile its on androidspin if you wanna read about it. with a 2 year plan its 150$ after a50$ mail in rebate and the phone by itself is only 400$ bucks that's pretty cheap

Yea that's true even though everyone is saying its awesome I'm just gonna wait to get a nexus I think I don't need a keyboard

so whats the verdict?

Been waiting for this phone since it was announced for my upgrade. T-Mobile UK shops should be getting it in either next week or week after. But having read through as much of this forum as i can stomach it seems there are so many unhappy people. Proximity sensor issues, lagging issues, battery issues, navigation issues etc....
So whats the verdict of you people that have one then? Are you glad youve got it? Are the issues really that widespread or is it isolated from the initial batch? I really dont want to dive in and get the phone all excitedly and then find these problems are major ones.
One thing you have to bear in mind with forums are that people tend to voice their opinion when they are unhappy. They are less likely to start threads stating how great the experience is going or about things they like!
Personally I can't find any real faults with the phone. There are little nags, such as the power button being hard to press but nothing that takes away from the overall experience. The battery life is poor over the first couple of days but it's looking like this resolves itself after the li-ion is conditioned.
Working for a major UK phone network, I get my hands on every handset going and nothing compares to the jaw dropping impact the 4.3" screen has! (Ok HD7 maybe, but WinPho7 is not quite ready yet, but will be great!) If you want the latest hardware and spend most of your time browsing or viewing media, the Desire HD is for you!
Regards.
I've had a hd2 for the last year so I'm used to the screen size the dhd is really nice I really like it I personally think to many people have commented to early with battery life mine seems fine and lasts the day with heavy use
My missus will tell you I don't put the thing down
I tried an iPhone 4 for a week and sent it back I preferred my hd2 although the iPhone was very smooth
The dhd is as smooth as the iPhone and the screen makes media and browsing so good, texting is also very good and I personally find the sound awesome through headphones well happy with mine as you might be able to tell

thinking of buying a streak, would like to ask a few [Q]

well, I would like to know if its, fast (not laggy)
can it run 2.3.3 if rooted?
hows the data speeds, call quality..
have you found yourself wanting a smaller screen (4.3/4.5)
does dell stand behind the phone? customer service!
is the screen nice, bright, vibrant. Can you read a book on it, with out wishing you just had the book! lol how would it stack up against the nook color in this department?
I have an HTC inspire, is it worht the swap at $350 for a new streak?
well, I would like to know if its, fast (not laggy)
Yes, it is fast and I do not think it to be laggy at all
can it run 2.3.3 if rooted?
It has not been release for the Streak as of yet.
hows the data speeds, call quality..
Data seems to be good for me. Call quality is very good.
have you found yourself wanting a smaller screen (4.3/4.5)
I got the device because of the screen and I have been loving it ever since.
does dell stand behind the phone? customer service!
No, not really.
is the screen nice, bright, vibrant. Can you read a book on it, with out wishing you just had the book! lol how would it stack up against the nook color in this department?
Yes, you can read a book, but I think you will have the same issues folks have with the IPAD, it is not so good in the outdoor setting for read, indoor would be just fine.
I have an HTC inspire, is it worht the swap at $350 for a new streak?
I cannot speak to this as I have never had an HTC inspire.
Mine's fast. Love it with Dell's 2.2.2 or Streakdroid 1.9. Comes down to personal taste.
2.3? No. Not yet at least. ;-)
Data/wifi are very good for me. Call quality is better than any of my previous phones. No one complains that they can't hear me. I use a Jawbone Icon most of the time.
Smaller screen? Heck no! I got this thing cause it's huge. I have a hard time imagining people working on smaller screens now. I love having 5" of real estate. Totally worth it.
I've only had one instance with Dell Mobility and they were excellent. The screen went south about 2 months after I got it so I called them. They had a replacement shipped out after a 20 minute phone call.
Dunno about books and the HTC. I use my B&W for reading and have never had an HTC. I hear awesome things about HTC though. Seems the main reason to change devices would be for screen size.
Any one know if dell will make a dell streak V2?
Also do they both have the same CPU 1Ghz? or is the inspire a newer version?
also, I would think the screen would be week, as in easy to break... I'm I wrong?
There is a rumor of another 5" model in the works, it is known as OPUS. There is a timeline about this over at streaksmart, you can find it on the forum if you want to hunt for it. You may want to checkout streaksmart.com anyhow.
I found the link: CLICK ME
Well, the screen is not a stong point, I have had to replace it but I must say it is holding up well now. You should treat it with respect if you know what I mean.
there are no gingerbread roms for the phone, infact theres barely any roms as we have 1 rom developer. and i feel because of that we dont get the best out of the phone. besides the tether disable in the att rom, theres not any carrier crippling of the phone. the stage launcher and widgets in 2.2.2 are really nice. the screen size is very nice to have, watching movies is a great experience, especially if you turn the brightness up. however its a standard lcd and rather low def for the size so i wouldnt recommend reading a book on it. the data experience has been the best ive ever seen on a phone. it seems the speeds are much higher than on other att phones. call quality is just ok. speakers can be dim or squeelchy. the phone app is crashy and its landscape locked (like the lock screen) so if you change lcd density is all off. the sound quality for some reason is terrible. i wouldnt suggest you plug in headphones and listen to music on it. i think dell considers this thing a failure. they dont advertise it and they keep selling it for less and less like its not worth its own components. apparently they are allergic to money. i bought the phone for its screen size. i wanted something that i wouldnt need a both a tablet and a phone. but as the days move on i find myself wanting both. i think ill end up going for a 4-4.5" phone to replace this and maybe a tablet in the future. i need atleast a slightly large phone if im not going to have a physical keyboard if i want to type. im glad i bought the phone. it was a good first android phone. the hardware is dating and im think im about ready for a new one.
well, I would like to know if its, fast (not laggy)
Doesn't lag much at all on rooted stock 351
can it run 2.3.3 if rooted?
no, at least not yet
hows the data speeds, call quality..
The data speed is good. Call quality is unbelievably good (probably the best of any smart phone i've used)
have you found yourself wanting a smaller screen (4.3/4.5)
no, but 4.5 wouldn't be bad, the reason I bought the phone was the size of the on-screen keyboard (its getting harder to find good physical keyboards on Android phones)
does dell stand behind the phone? customer service!
Yes/no, It all depends on where you buy the phone. If you buy it from them they will try as hard as they can to make you happy. I have the unlocked version straight from the Dell website and I'm on my third streak and both times I called in with a device problem they tried to fix it and when they couldn't they sent me a brand new one no questions asked. I've heard that if you bought it from Best Buy, Dell may not be as helpful.
is the screen nice, bright, vibrant. Can you read a book on it, with out wishing you just had the book! lol how would it stack up against the nook color in this department?
Yes and it does pretty well outside, unfortunately I've never used a nook color outdoors so I wouldn't know how the Streak compares
I have an HTC inspire, is it worth the swap at $350 for a new streak?
The Inspire is a nice phone, but I have no Idea what roms are available for it so I couldn't tell you.
Other Thoughts
I love my Streak and I'm hoping the second version of it will come out as planned. Also the Streak Community here on XDA is great and can help solve any issues you have with The Streak.
What don't you like about the Inspire?
Also the Screen on the Streak can seem fragile but that is because of its large surface area, I recommend an Otter Box (the commuter) It protects the device and keeps pressure off the screen while my streak is in my pocket.
hows the speaker on the streak? I dont talk much on the phone when I do, I use the speaker.. I also want to be able to hear the ringer
I love my inspire truthe be told, but if I can get something close but with w 5" screen, why not?
This really depends on the build. Older builds (pre 31x iirc) are really loud on speakerphone. After, it seems they quieted it down. When you flash 1.9.0 there's an option to enable an audio boost option that fixes it I believe.
is the screen really fragile... thats like the number one thing I keep reading..

Spend a few bucks and put it in an Otterbox Defender. I took a fall off my roof that put me in the hospital and I landed on my Streak. Not a scratch on it and it kept on ticking like nothing happened. Use some common sense (like NOT putting it in your back pocket and sitting down on it) and the screen will be fine.
Phone is rocket fast and awesome in every way except for battery life. I have JuiceDefender and Advanced Task Killer on mine and I still am lucky to get 12-hours of battery life...
Streak 7: crap.
Don't know about the 5 but the 7 is a total piece of garbage. The screen has serious viewing angle problems, to the point that using it in portrait mode is very unpleasant. And 800x480 is insufficient on a 7" screen.
Battery life is unacceptably bad: you won't get 48 hours of stand-by on a full battery, and that's in the "aggressive power savings" mode!
It's heavy, and the screen is fragile. Mine had problems that lasted about a day and went away as mysteriously as they arrived, but I won't be surprised if they come back and stay permanently.
I
As much as I like the Streak but I am getting a little tired of the unresponsive screen once in a while it freezes up and I can't unlock it,music through the 3.5mm audiojack is pretty low and the camera is another drawback.I don't even wanna call Dell anymore since their replacement devices come with the same issue.
I started to save money to buy something new in the next few months.
Hows the GPS?
Also can the CPU be overclocked to 1.2 or 1.3?
I think the OTTER box would be great
a big battery and a car charger will take care of the battery
Volume+ or DSP will help the volume and
now the last thing that I'm worried about is the GPS and CPU, being gen 1, I would think it lags some times, since my inspire does get a little slow now and then, and the inspire had more RAM.
I'm have a great phone, but would not mind having that 5" screen
I know there is talk of other 5 inch phones but I simply do not see any...
Nothing huh?
Yeah, setcpu can overclock it to 1.2 or so. otterbox defender if you want a beltclip, commuter if you don't.
Posted with StreakZilla, using XDA App.
I'm thinking of purchasing a Streak as well.
I'm curious, how many of you have had to get a replacement device from Dell? What were the reasons for this? Should I expect the same?
Thanks for the help.
The GPS on the Streak is very good, Not sure why people complain about the battery life as I have no problem with it, also I recommend the Otterbox Commuter. The screen is not as fragile as It's made out to be, also the unresponsiveness that people have is usually fixed by recalibrating the screen after installing a new Rom(I have the streak in my pocket all day and never have the problem). Finally the Streak seems to be a difficult device to consistently manufacture properly, so you may have to get a replacement due to something being defective, but in my opinion it is worth it because it is a great phone.
the only real problem I see now, is the fact that DELL makes the phone... lol I HATE talking to people from india!! If DELL were to just change that, they could be a great company again....
I'll get that 4800mah battery if I keep the phone... I just wish we had more devolpment.... So how much "better is the CPU in the HTC inspire than the streak?" is just just better on battery? I know that it can be OC to 1.8GHZ but since you cant add a big battery, thats just dumb...
Dell's Mobility(Cell phone) Support isn't in India. Also the processor in the Inspire should be more efficient due to its smaller architecture and should handle graphics better as it has a better GPU (the Adreno 205 vs. the 200). As for real world performance differences I have no idea. Personally I've never had an issue with processor power on my Streak, also I've found on mobile devices that it is the amount of free Ram that matters more than processing power.

[Q] HD2 - Still Worth Buying This Awesome Monster?

Hey guys. I'm looking to buy a phone, and the new ones have failed to impress me much, especially due to their price.
Now, I'm looking at the oldies here, and I know this Monster has practically all OSes. And I'm getting a brand new one for cheap.
Please let me know whether this is still worth buying, or should I look at another phone?
Budget: 20K INR tops (~$363)

I don't see why not? Specially if you're into customization and I don't mean just the themes for Android, I mean changing your roms weekly...I cant seems to stop flashing new roms over and over lol. With that said tho, it's never going to perform as good as a stock device, and being that the HD2's stock is a dead system you might wanna think about it.
Other then that, it has a huge screen, it does everything that most of new devices do, cept the really graphics intensive games, and some minor rom bugs, but what you get is pretty much best of both worlds of Windows Phone and Android, you dual, triple, quadruple boot it. Heck I'm still using it as a daily driver...threw my HTC Radar away and went back to HD2.
HD2 is a great device, but it lacks 4G, which is noticeable to me.
I've noticed the newer phones seem to have a better GPS, I have an HTC MT4G, and the GPS locks a LOT quicker than the HD2s.
Still, I don't really like the MT4G very much, so I starting to think what I would like to get next?

4G connectivity is not a huge consideration outside of the US yet, and definitely not in India (where the OP evidently lives).
@OP, I personally don't see the HD2 as being worth it any more. The hardware is too outdated, and whilst it's cheap you should instead get a Nexus 4 which has far better hardware at a very low price. My particular issues with getting a HD2 now would be the awful GPU (can't even run temple run smoothly) and the screen which is now at quite a low PPI and doesn't have proper multitouch. At the end of the day it all depends on the price you can get it for.
you can get them around nashville tn for $65 and at that price i would HIGHLY recommend it.
i just put the nexusHD jellybean ROM on mine (coming from windows 6.5) and it came back to life! it had been living in the bottom of a desk drawer and now its sleek and running an android OS maybe 2% of the world is using.
in fact i might get 2 or 3 more to have as backups...this thing is great just running without a SIM card on WIFI at home for streaming pandora or using as a portable web browser.
Get the nexus 4 from the play store in usa... see the nexus 4 Indian thread in the nexus forum about how to get it to India. ....

I still recommend
If you want to buy the HD2. My on attention guaranty. Mine was more than 3 times But I think I have god motherboard now and works almost 6 month, Remember this is pretty old device and have only 2 finger to screen control - more don't work and let me think what next. Battery sometimes sucks. If I listing music all the time. Phone keep battery enough 10/11h without using display(control music by volumes buttons) The funniest thing is is still faster than cheap tablets from hypermarkets and have incredible support from xda
Now I only waiting when my HD2 will be broken or see highest battery which can withstand about 1 week
yep! i'm thinking of having a couple of these around the house to play w/ new ROM builds and to use as bluetooth devices for my wireless music jamboxes and as a quick web browser and search tool.
no sim card needed! just use wifi
Unfortunately I don't have that much money.
I found an Xperia S for the exact price of my budget, so I'm going with that.
