Acer A500 GPS not for navigating - Acer Iconia A500

I to have problems with the a500 gps unit. I called acer support and gues what. Acer support in the netherlands told me that the a500 wifi gps unit is not meant for navigating. They say that any problem with gps units on the acer a500 cannot be solved by acer since the gps should not be used for navigating anyway.. the guy told me i should have bought a a500 with 3g unit!.. those a500s would be able to navigate.
I have asked acer to confirm this officially via email, and i will post the email here when they do.. I'll be selling my acer...
Is the a500 wifi version really not supposed to be used for navigation?
--Edit: Acer has replied the helpdesk employee must have been mistaken. They understand the GPS unit is not working correctly and will come up with a solution... Wait and see.

They are speaking of Google Navigation, which requires an active data connection. The gps doesn't require data to work, it just doesn't work well.
Also, this is not development and shouldn't be in this forum.

There lieing to you, though with 3g you get a faster lock with cell tower triangulation

Sorry, but that's an incredible bull****! Why would you put a specific purpose module in a device and then claim it is not ment to be used for that specific purpose. I use my A500 with latest Sygyc and despite some screen size issues (lowest dialogue buttons are slightly off-screen) it is working perfect. Its a brand new device with a brand new OS - takes some time for developers to make apps work flawlessly with these tablets or make separate versions for them.

My gps cannot get a lock.. now acer does not want to help me... I'm selling my tablet..
How should I relocate this post?

Whereabouts in the world are you? If you're in the EU, you're statutory rights as a buyer are protected when it comes to faulty hardware and you should be able to claim a full refund.

True I am in the netherlands, so i think they must give me a refund, but let me first wait for their official answer in an email...

GPS> Possibly faulty hardware
Hi All,
I have also had some issues with the GSP on my a500. Essentially the GPS has been completely unusable. Using an app like GPS essentials doesn't find any satelites. Having played around with a few demo units in stores today I realised that this is not the case for other a500s. I promptly returned my device to the place of purchase for another one, and low and behold i get an almost instant GPS lock (5-10 seconds) and can find 5/6 satellites on gps essentials when indoors. I haven't even tested it outside yet! This would suggest that my original device had a hardware issue with may well be the case for some of the others having issues.

Google intends to release a stand-alone version to allow Navigation to operate without a wireless connection. But an ETA is a while away. The present version of Navigation will evidently allow non-wireless gps if you sit and wander all over your country of residence such that the map info is saved into a cache, which can be used by the built-in gps chip. I haven't tried to see if it works yet, but I did slowly but surely travel my way inside Navigation until about 3:00am the other night/morning to see if the cache size increased as I multitouched my way from Southwest Florida to Pittsburgh... the longest way possible (like passing through Oklahoma City, Midland TX, Denver... Phoenix, Flagstaff... Cincinnatti, Oxford OH...) and my cache is indeed quite large now.
I might set my a500 on the passenger seat tomorrow afternoon for a little drive to see if at the least I can travel around town.

If you left your tablet outside with a clear view to the sky waited 20 minutes and still did not get a lock , that means that you have a defective unit and should send it to your service center.
Have you installed GPS test ? https://market.android.com/details?id=com.chartcross.gpstest&feature=search_result even if you are unable to get a lock it will tell you how many satellite is your device able to view

Thanks for the link . I can confirm that the GPS works and for me had an accuracy of 16ft while in my car. Good enough for me.

my 4th iconia a500
Hi guys i am on my 4th acer this one 16g..
first off gps does work and i navigated with it no problem as long as you have wi fi when you enter your destination...
that being said my first a500 a 32g model (futureshop canada) had lousy build uneven gaps around the screen gps would take forever to lock on ..even after all the fixes suggested on xda.. battery drainage was ridiculous fixed with renaming telephony and phone to .bak
the second acer same as first ... 3rd model was 16 g returned because of case creaking ... and finally a miracle
this unit was built may 2011 ok believe this gps fixes in 5 sec out of the box .. its blazing fast applied no updates no tweaks .its simply that good its like a different unit alltoghether ... will post pics and a video too prove this

I tried sygic, gps test, gps status, google nav... i have had a 10 sec fix once, but can't get another.. My unit is defective and needs to be repaired. I'm disappointed because Acer tells me they do not fix my unit since gps is not supposed to be used on a wifi only model...

well has anyone tried the other "tablets" to see how accurate it could be?
Mine is the 32gb wifi version and my GPS wouldn't work at my house but I went for a drive it linked up in about 5 mins (first time) but after that it knew right where'i was every street I passed it was perfect, I'd suggest taking a drive to test out in the open where satelites can connect easier. Its a tablet.
Maybe 3.1 will solve many problems the xoom seems very smooth on 3.1

GPS fix gets some media attention...finally.

Update: We've just received an official statement from Samsung on the matter:
"Samsung Mobile is aware that under certain conditions, the GPS on our U.S. Galaxy S devices may not be meeting performance expectations. We are diligently evaluating the situation and will provide an update as soon as possible."
hopefully media attention will prompt samsung to addressing it as timely as possible
Kind of sad this is what it takes to get them to fix something. I don't think it's been determined whether it's just a software glitch, or something more serious like hardware that requires a revision. Software can be pushed to the phone, where a new chip can't.

They're already aware. If you think Engadget posting this crap to their mobile site weeks after even THEY experienced their first issue with GPS is what it "takes" for Samsung to acknowledge the problem you're sadly mistaken. This is NO different from what they posted on Twitter
Am I the only one who hasn't had any issues to speak of with GPS?
The more media coverage, however late, this gets the better. Do you think apple would have moved so quickly on their "fix" were it not for the ridiculous media coverage?
I hope some more mainstream news outlets pick up on this. That might force more than a canned response from samsung.

Try this...disable "use wireless networks" under "location and security"(this will let the phone use JUST the GPS receiver), then download and install Googles "My Tracks" app. Run that app while driving a long distance, and see just how accurate your GPS is.

I don't doubt that the issue exists, but I'm not going to go out of my way to experience it. I'm no masochist...
If the phone is using Wireless Networks for a location fix in your car the accuracy would be awful and noticeably off.

yes - especially if other media pick up on it, and verizon & sprint catch wind of it and actually test theirs before releasing - that would be the real pressure point on sammy
At least Samsung isn't saying this is our fault or round up a bunch of competitors' phones and say they have the same issues. The fact that they say they're evaluating the situation makes it sound like the fix isn't coming any time soon.

the galaxy s is launching in over 100 countries, including every major carrier in the US. they are projected to sell over 10 million handsets. samsung lives or dies by this phone, IMO. i can understand frustration from their previous handsets, but if they drop the ball on the galaxy s, they might as well get out of the business all together.

Gps

Why do people need gps on their phones? this is a serious question
I have never needed or used gps in my life
I like using maps better I guess
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
My biggest uses:
Find restaurants/activities near me to try new things (or in a new location)
Geo-caching - fun way to hike
Navigation - maps are dangerous and slow to use in a car, annoying to carry, and out of date depending on your source. Phones aren't the best for this but Android's Navigation is basically the cream of the crop.
Um if you dont know what good a gps is you really need to get into the tech. age.
I use it for EVERYTHING.
The real key is that I use google maps to look up anyone or anything around me. My friends all use latitude on weekend nights so we can find each other. If my gps doesn't show where I am how are friends supposed to find me?
I use it for pizza on a random night... or out on the boat when I'm going to a restaurant on the water.....or on a Friday afternoon when traffic is horrible and I want an alternate route.
There's plenty of reasons why the GPS NEEDS TO ACTUALLY WORK on this phone.
Well I'm not making an excuse for the gps problems I just have never needed gps is all
barely any of my friends have an android phone
Still stuck on blackberry and feature phones

Gosh. Where to start: Geocaching; geotagging photos ("the accident|family snapshot|scenery is right here"); tracking athletic runs (Cardio Trainer, etc); self-geocoding of addresses to avoid intellectual property issues with online geocoding sources; geocoding any physical object surveyed for a multitude of GIS applications and databases; "I am here" apps for emergency use; wardriving; geo-based social networking; geo-based shopping (Barcoder, Shop Savvy, etc.); calibrating speedometer and odometer; orienteering; mapping trails; tracking hikes and bike rides; of course, real-time vehicular navigation; recording and analyzing delivery routes ...
The list is really open-ended, and is expanding as democratized GIS, mapping, and GPS functionalities expand.
The integration of GPS with other technologies on the "phone" -- really a pocket computer that happens to make phone calls and is enhanced by cell-based GPS hybrid location and thus orders of magnitude more useful than a dedicated GPS receiver-- is what provides the power. I can be driving down the highway at lunch, speak "Taco Bell" into my phone, and it will find the closest choices with directions on a dynamic map.
This is why an accurate and functioning GPS is integral to Android smartphones. It enables things you didn't even conceive of, and services still being invented.
Geographically-based "to do" items, so the phone alerts you when you're getting off the freeway and reminds you to stop at the grocery store to buy toilet paper and cat food on the way home from work.
Location-aware ringer preferences. At the office, it turns down the ringer volume so half the floor doesn't hear the theme from The Great Giana Sisters (starting at 2:18) performed by Machinae Supremacy whenever somebody calls

Well then you need to expand your horizions Sometimes it's fun to go get lost and then of course have a nice gps to bring you home.
I use sprint nav when me and my friends get lost on a random night in the car or when we're driving with no where to go, I'll use sprint nav to get us to some random restaurant in another state or something.
I also use google maps to find trainstations nearby when I'm in some random part of the city. And when I went to my friends college 7 hours away, thebus had to make a random stop and I used it to figure out where I was.
Its also entertaining to ride a train and see a little blue arrow scrolling across the screen following your path with a Speedometer.
If you have intimateknowledge ofplaces bfore hand, then you have no reason for a gps considering you clearly don't care about the tecnology. This gps bug effects quite a few people adversely. I for one didn't realize how much I used gps until I upgraded from my hero

Supernova/Phoenix GPS flashable zip

Hey guys and gals. I have gotten a lot of positive reports on the GPS functioning on Supernova and Phoenix so I took the files and created a flashable zip for your pleasure. I know there have been numerous supposed fixes in the past and I am not claiming this is it, but it does work on 2 of my ROMS so why not yours. Please keep this thread clean as I know you all love to trash supposed GPS fix threads. Everyone knows I am just here to help.
Pair this fix with one of these modems depending on your geographical location for best results. Mine is JK4, North Eastern US.
This is just a combination of extensive trial and error testing which has proven to work.
-Adam
You are a good sport mate to share this.
I tried it with Paragon and it seems to be working...not sure if it is as good as with Supernova itself but I will test a bit more.
Regards!
I was wondering if you would ever going to release this, haha. I'm trying a few ROMs this weekend before I flash Supernova (or Firefly). I'll post results later on if i can get it to work
Trying on FireFly now.
Do i need to clear GPS data after installing this?
used supernova and phoenix. all I can say adam may have the best fix for the gps. I always get 20m lock in 5-7 seconds. and the 10 meter lock. it never jumps around. everybody should try this
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
I have to say that Adam's GPS fix is no joke. I have been using his roms exclusively since is initial release of Phoenix, and now on Supernova 2.1 the GPS is phenomenal!!
On testing through sgs I received an average lock time of 3-8 seconds, 9 sats, range from 5 to 15 meters.
This is testing inside my house where previously it would take up to 10 min to lock, averaging 2-3 sats at best, and ranges from 15 to 100 meters!!
On google maps I receive an average position lock time of 8 seconds, within 30 meters of my position with direction being dead on.
On navigation, on a 12 mile trip, I did not loop or get thrown off track at all. Street names on the map showed up just before they came into viewing distance.
I may not have gotten quite as technical as some of you would like, but for all around functionality, it can't be beat. A HUGE thanks to Adam and his team for all of their hard work fixing what the manufacturers and service providers wouldn't take the time to.
I've had really good results using the GPS on Phoenix and Supernova. Quick locks, good accuracy and decent tracking.
I've been using phoenix 4.5, Adam's ROM w/ his GPS files/tuning, to track my running via Cardiotrainer and I've never had results so accurate.
For Comparison's sake, prior I used cognition 2.3 b6 and 2.3 b8 and the GPS was not as accurate.
Thanks a lot. The only time my GPS works is when I'm on Supernova or Phoenix.
I've flashed every rom available and Adams fix is by far, the best one available.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
I was on Phoenix and now I am on supernova. All I can say is I would have never consider using my cappy as my primary gps until I got adam's roms.
The gps performance is pretty amazing if you ask me.
Play with different modems to get best results.
Works excellent!
I'm a FireFly user. Just installed this fix and I'm impressed! Significantly improvement with GPS inside. Have to try it with the real driving.

Yeah exactly, just like a regular android phone with GPS. Except the tablet doesn't have a cell radio, so you will have to accomodate for that.
Either tether, or get some type of preloaded data GPS app.
I asked Asus on there official facebook profile i got this
Me - AnandTech.com says that there is no GPS, even though Asus's official specs say there is. Is it true?
http://www.facebook.com/ASUSASUS Official Page ‎@Dan - sorry, that's correct. No GPS in North America, but it is available in some regions which is why it's listed on the official ASUS site
ASUS Official Page N.A has location GPS but not Navigation GPS to clarify
http://www.facebook.com/ASUS/posts/182761815105072
just an FYI, you no longer need a data connection to use google maps, since the latest release, they started using Vector maps, which can store much more data in a much smaller space, so they now have caching for commonly visited areas, so as long as you run through your route while you have a wifi connection, it should be able to run you without connection due to caching.

http://www.facebook.com/ASUSASUS Official Page ‎@Dan - sorry, that's correct. No GPS in North America, but it is available in some regions which is why it's listed on the official ASUS site

No it totally doesn't have GPS and you should probably move along a buy another tablet instead......
On a much less sarcastic side note, that is awesome that they included the chip for GPS. Wonder if its the Broadcomm BCM4751....

I was just showing what Asus said on their Facebook page
No need to freak out about it
This wouldn't have been a deal breaker for me, but it's nice to know that it's in there. We are all such terrible feature whores these days. Imagine if we had to go back to the era of pagers and pay phones!

What the heck did they mean by "N.A has location GPS but not Navigation GPS"?
My guess is that (s)he does not know what (s)he is talking about. From his/her comment, I think (s)he meant the tablet has a GPS chip to give location but no software for navigation.
If we install any map software including google map(may need wifi), this should work, right?

GPS Locking Issue

Does anyone have problems locking to the GPS? GPS Test tells me I have 25 satellites in view but only 3 to 5 are in use. I can never get a good lock in Google Maps. Navigation is pretty much useless. I am testing with a clear view of the sky.

I had the same problem, but mine was caused by a custom ROM and some xposed mods that didn't play well together. I had to do a factory reset and walk around for a couple minutes for the first lock. Then after that it got a fixed locked every time, really fast.
I do. You're the only person I've seen comment on it other than myself. I was getting pretty convinced that it was just my phone that was weak on GPS. I have to be outside to get a lock most of the time. If it's cloudy I'll only get 8 or 9 out of 17 or so.
I rarely get a lock while in my house, it's hit or miss while in a car, and not at all when in my office. I tried faster fix but that didn't help any. The on'y other phone I've owned that was this weak on GPS was my Galaxy Nexus.
I have also been having this issue. The only thing that seems to help is by enabling the Google location services, for some reason that helps the gps . However it has a negative impact on the battery. At first I though it was the custom rom but I did a full unroot and reset, and the problem persists.

I'm having the same issue on my d803 at the begging I thought it was a faulty device the one I got because I tried a factory reset and it didn't help. I tested with a Nexus 7 and a Galaxy s4 next to it and they got a lock immediately. After exchanging the phone I still have the same issue. I don't know if it is just software or also hardware related. Hopefully LG will release an update for the issue.

I'm a plumber. I use my GPS every day. My gps seems weak also. It takes a while to lock on and then its gets confused while I'm using it. I hope we can find a fix.

I use GPS regularly. With most phones I have trouble in central London but today for first time I used my g2 and it was perfect and locked quickly

Had the same issue on the Verizon variant. No matter what I tried to do while on a custom rom I couldn't get a lock in Maps or GPS Test. So I had to restore back to stock. Deleting all my internal storage in the process. Finally was able to get GPS working on this thing. I was about to exchange the device before I did this.
There have been other threads about this in the Q&A section. It seems limited to the Verizon version, but I pretty much experience the same issues as everyone here. Compass is sometimes off by 30 degrees and GPS lock takes a while. I do occasionally get placed on neighboring streets when in a downtown city area as well due to the lock accuracy.

Ya I'm having big issues too, my phone will say it has my location but have like no satellites, and gps info doesn't say it until i have lik 8+ sattellites and even then sometimes google maps doesn't show a complete lock, though I have gotton that a few times. Half the time though it just takes foerever , and i'm on verizon
Im having problems here as well. I will eventually get a lock, but will get a notification saying GPS signal lost in the middle of navigating with Google Maps. Was trying to figure out if its a Verizon phone issue or I just have a bad GPS antenna...
Same issue here. GPS checker app doesn't help much. Running Malladus. Might factory reset later on. Everytime I check GPS at work I'm several blocks in another direction from my location.
I have also noticed that it has trouble figuring out which way I am heading. Lets say my google maps has me going north, my arrow might be going north but it pointed West. Seems all screwed up.
I had the same issue. Downloaded GPS status from the play store, ran it, and now I get lock in seconds.

For me, it's not necessarily a lock issue, it's that I will have a lock and then it will tell me gps signal lost.

Since this seems mostly to be on the Verizon model has anyone compared the GPS.conf file with another to see the differences? Maybe this can be an easy fix.
I called Verizon today about my GPS. They said its a known issue with Verizon lg g2. They said the first batch may have been defective. They are sending me a new one.

I've experienced the same issue with my T-mobile G2. Only way to get a solid GPS lock is to turn on google location services. Even then the lock is "fuzzy" and accuracy is 30-80 feet.

I got it a couple of days after launch. So a month or so. I'll let you know if the new one is better.
