Need to root brand new G2 w/o ADB (im on a mac) - G2 and Desire Z General

So I just got my replacement G2 from T-mo and it's brand new so it's running 2.3.3 and I need to root it. I tried using visionary to temp root so I could run gfree to perm root but the phone freezes every time I try to temproot. Can anyone give me any tips or teach me how to use adb on a mac.

that would be how you use adb on a mac....
but i dont think there is a rooting method for 2.3 yet

crap, I really need to get root back on my phone too. I did a backup using rom manager and i would really like to restore my everything.

Please search before posting new threads. Most questions you have can most likely be answered in one of the stickies.

thanks for the non help. I did search and they isn't anything in the stickies about rooting the g2 with gb on it, but hey thanks for helping your fellow enthusiast

Wait, how is it that you lost root, and yet you were using ROM Manager? Can't you just boot into recovery and flash a rooted ROM?

I didn't lose root, I had another g2 and it crapped out on me but I made a backup of the rom and want to restore it on my new g2 but I'm having trouble figuring out how to root it with 2.3.3. I tried to use adb but every time I try to run the android sdk i get an error

I thought GB wasnt available on the G2 yet??? I got my G2 last week and it's running 2.2...

No need to be a ****... GB isn't even available OTA to users, so theres a very small chance that there's a root method for something that hasn't come out yet...
btw ADB on Mac is pretty easy to set up. but as far as rooting 2.2 goes, you didn't need ADB to do it, which saves you the hassle of setting up the SDK and using Terminal if you're not feeling confident with it. I'm sure once they figure out rooting 2.3, the same will probably be true soon enough.

Some people are getting refurb/repair units back with 2.3, because 2.3 is close to coming in OTA format for the G2 from most reports.

I'm aware that most people don't have gb yet, that's why I figured I would ask for help as opposed to just searching the forums, I had my 2.2 g2 rooted no prob and once i found a decent tutorial then yeah I did realize that adb is supposed to be easy on mac. I'm having an issue with getting the sdk running, I can navigate to the folder in Terminal but when I try to run "android" i get a ton of errors

Hi !
The new T-Mobile 2.3.3 stock gingerbread rom is not rootable at the moment.
We currently do not have a temp-root method for it. The old methods (rage, psneuter and also gingerbreak) do not work as the exploits they where using have been patched.
At the moment you have to wait for someone to disclose a new gingerbread exploit.
Have fun - Guhl

thanks, hopefully something will come along soon because being on a stock rom is killing me

If you expect to get any respect or help through these forums you would be wise to hold your tongue and not dismiss the help you do receive.

I don't think 2.2.1 was even rooted so I doubt 2.3.3 would be. Cant you downgrade?

why dont you sell your phone on ebay.. and buy a g2 or desire z with 2.2 or thats already rooted?? you wont have to wait then

This guide was the best thing that ever happened to me when I was setting up ADB on my Mac.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865685
Now all I have to do is plug my phone in and enter whatever adb commands I want. No changing directories and all that. It was very helpful.

Your first step should be to buy a PC.

new HTC Hero on 1.5 how to update to 2.1?

I have been searching forums since morning but I haven't been able to figure out how to update to 2.1 and still have root access. There is no OTA available on the phone.
Should I download the RUU exe from sprint's website and update to 2.1? I hear that 2.1 root is not possible after that.
Can anyone guide me in the right direction please?
thanks..
If you want to root now, DON'T update to 2.1. Get the fresh kitchen and root with that.
HeroMeng, thanks for the reply. could you tell me where do I get kitchen from?
and I think I need to mention it is a CDMA HTC Hero on Sprint

You can download the kitchen right here. It only works on Windows, so keep that in mind. Once you download the kitchen, tap the Rooter tab. Check none of the boxes, and press "root" (or something like that).

Yeah, that's fine. So is everyone's in this section
so I cant get 2.1 on this thing yet ? Kitchen will install a custom 1.5 ROM on it. I managed to read through another forum thread and root the phone. So now I have root on 1.5. I understand that the unrevoked.com root for androind 2.1 wont work after the OTA update. I am beginning to get a little confused. Can I update the phone to RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.20.651.1_signed_test Firmware, as it has a built in ROOT ACCESS source link: here though I cant seem to find the download link for 2.20.651.1
sorry if the message is getting convoluted...
Easiest way is to Root with 1.5 using a guide in the Android Dev Section. I did it to 5 CDMA Heros with no prob whatsoever.
And by the way, 2.1 RUU has been rooted.. Search for it in the Dev Section.. (Should be right there on the first page...
Once you are rooted, if you want Something thats the official one, but much better, I recommend DamageControl 2.09 or Fresh 2.1
I have root on 1.5 now, I can install Fresh 2.1 using the instructions here ?

I have read that guide before but didn't want to follow the wrong one and be left with a nice pretty brick. I've read how you help peers and noobs like me and appreciate that. Well I need to fond a Kingston or PNY sd card, I've tried to make a goldcard with 3 different sandisks and they would not take. I know I'm asking big here bit of you could point me in the direction of a good solid reliable ROM that doesn't need to be tweaked to fit my phone and any other advice/guides that would seriously help a brotha out I would greatly appreciate it.

[Q] Any way to Get root Back?

I just rooted my phone the other day and of course the night I go out and leave the phone at home the g/f has to use my phone. Well it said OTA and she thought it was something I didn't finish and, yup u guessed it she gave me the update. I lost root as you know and now is there any way for me to get root back at this point?. I have a HTC Espresso 3g slide with T-Mobile and any help would be appreciated a lot. I was all set to do my ROM today and now this. Go Figure...
Not At this time no.

i forgot where i read this, but i read in theory that the Droid X method to root should work on any previous android phones, jus needs to be changed for the phone..
This method i did use for my N1 and it worked great! some one was able to make it work for the n1 hopefully some can do the same for the Slide
I looked into this method and yes it should work I have the files and ill upload them and post them in a new thread and see if we can get it to work.
I works off of some exploit in the working android system to trick the device into trusting the su and superuser.apk and busybox as android systems files and installing them, has to do with bluetooth and wifi exploit it least that's what I understood

Well I have been looking everywhere looking for a fix for this and it seems right now that you and I are the only ones that this has happened too. I'm sure there are others. Just for a lack of something to do I have been trying all sorts of things but nothing has worked so far. If I find a fix I will post it here to help out of course. Sooner or later someone will come up with one since all the phones being sold now or people that haven't rooted yet will need new root.zip files I would think.

when your in terminal or adb shell and do "cp" cmd it will give you not found.. but i found this script to fully install it after root

Its the fact that the OP said "HTC root is finally here." Its not finally here, its been here for a long time.
No one is passing judgement, we are just saying root is not new...even for .7. That app might be new, but root is not.
P.S. if those 100's of Hero users running .7 had read XDA, or done a simple Google search, they would have known you can root. .7 hasn't been out for 6 months, so you could have used Androot.
At any rate, enjoy your rooted phone.

Exactly. I've been playing with rooting devices since I had a HTC Mogul running WinMob.
These one-click solutions are nice and all but are usually the polish to an otherwise multi-step solution that has been around for quite a while.
But it worked with the ROM you would have had 6 months ago when you said you started searching.

if so i would say go to theimpaler747 thread for cyanogenmod Q&A, the OP is VERY helpful. I used regaw's root and my freind as well, worked fine for our heros, reread the steps just to make sure you didn't miss anything.
I tried all these one click solutions on mine with the .7 upadate and they didn't work. I looked around for hours like most noobs do before they post... and the only thing that worked for me was to run the RUU to get it back to basics.
So my little first contribution/suggestion, if it's worthy, would be to note in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572) where it says .6 underlined, to read .6 and above .7.8.9..ect.
Good luck to the OP.

I ruu'ed back to 2.1 and then accepted all the updates and used superoneclick it worked.
None of the one click stuff worked for me. Trying to get http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572 to take and everything worked accept the "Superuser Permission". How the root exploit (rageagainstthecage.bin) works

I was curious about how the root exploit that unlocks our phones for all this great dev stuff works. Found this explanation, and it was quite good. For those with sufficient unix/linux knowlege, this will be totally understandable, so I'd recommend following the link, and reading the in-depth explanation, complete with C code. For those with less background in this stuff, it's still worth a read, but you'll have to work harder to understand exactly what's going on.
Post any questions in this thread, and I'll be happy to answer them!
This is a good explanation, I read something similar when rage was released, may hve even been this. But I'm pretty versed with linux and am overly versed in C...to the point where I have nightmares....

I really need this root because my phone did not come with Android market and I want to install it through ADB, and I think that requires a root correct? Even if I can't root my phone, is there any way to install an apk to my phone's internal storage and not my SD card?

I know for the opimus s you have to force a flash of an older software for z4 to root.

no you dont need to root to install thru adb. just open up command/terminal,
adb install /blah/blah/phoneapphere.apk
alternatively you can put it on your sd card and use a file manager to locate the apk and install it on the phone.. for a nice easy root, use gingerbreak its the latest un patched exploit.. theres an apk version on xda it will root your phone no issues

specs don't really dictate which exploit will work on a device though.
If the bootloader is locked on the HTC, there's going to be a different workaround to root it.

Look in the vision g2 section I was in the same boat as you there is a tut in those forums for downgrading to 2.2.1 with adb it also works for mt4g wish I still had link but its there
Same here... Lost my phone and received the replacement yesterday (off course version 2.3.4). Turned out it is a refurbished, the speaker not working, the earpiece not working. I missed another release of lovely Miui
I just happened to see this post and am curious what the problem is... Why are you downgrading it???
I have a Mytouch 4g (HTC Glacier) which was having issues and I just got the replacement. I have not even turn it on, but I have not doubt it will be 2.3.3-- their latest OTA udpate.
Is there going to be any problem rooting this?? Again, it alarmed me that people were trying to downgrade..

There is no method to root 2.3.4 yet. That's why people have to downgrade.
Do you mean like downgrade from 2.3.4 to 2.2.1 root it, and then upgrade to 2.3.4?
But the only way to do that is if we had the stock 2.3.4 rom, which we don't have, correct?
So I can skip the root and wait, or I can downgrade and be able to use 50% of the apps which I would otherwise be unable to use as they require root.
This sucks.... I am sure someone is working hard on this... but I am surprised there has not been any method (even one that was risky -- as in one typo and you've bricked it) figured out by someone...
Ummm.. Next question then, Can anyone tell me any obvious benefits of the TMO 2.3.4 stock? Is it fast, or mediocre? Or is it just worthless due to the fact that you cannot root it?

Do you mean like downgrade from 2.3.4 to 2.2.1 root it, and then upgrade to 2.3.4?
But the only way to do that is if we had the stock 2.3.4 rom, which we don't have, correct?
So I can skip the root and wait, or I can downgrade and be able to use 50% of the apps which I would otherwise be unable to use as they require root.

Didn't quite understand what you mean but yes, if you got the phone pre-installed with TMO's 2.3.4 then there's no way to root that. You would have to downgrade back to Froyo then root it.
There really are no benefits to TMO's stock 2.3.4 since CM7 2.3.5, VU's 2.3.4 and MIUI's 2.3.5 GB are all better and faster. And even if you liked TMO's GB version for some reason there are rooted and deodexed versions to flash in the dev section. So there really is no downside to rooting.
And as previously stated, the only way to downgrade would be to use that thread in the G2 section which requires ADB.
If you have any questions I just finished downgrading my replacement phone and and rooting via gfree last night.
And before last night I've never even used ADB before.
Found 2 threads that helped me do just that.
Got it all downgraded then followed a video to root gfree. (mackster248)
(Never rooted that way before either.)
Anyway PM if you need help. Maybe I can help you out.

I came over from Sprint Sunday. I bought a new MT4G, and it had 2.3.4 on it. I had a bad feeling there wasnt gonna be a root method for it. I jumped on my PC and did a few google searches. I came up with this method to downgrade:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
It went perfect. I also looked at a few of the root methods. I found this one to be easiest for me:

I only post this becuase I havent seen any links posted and I imagine alot more people are gonna end up with the GB MT4G's out of the box. Total time to downgrade and root was less than 30 minutes.
same thing happened to me, I tried the adb process but it's hard. so I gave up.. Good luck to you

But this method cannot be used if you have 2.3.4 stock, correct? I looked at it quickly.... it doesn't seem to mention downgrading (unless I overlooked it), so it would require downgrade to Froyo first, correct?

Yes you would half to downgrade to 2.2.1 to root there is no way to root 2.3.4 right now
Yea, unlike most of the other HTC. Phones that got a 2.3.4 update, revolution doesn't support unlocking the mytouch 4g without a downgrade. On the first page of this thread I posted a link to downgrade and the easiest way I found to root. Someone also posted links on this page. I found a few other root methods but they required you to install apps to gain temp root access or download files on the phones browser. The link I found actually only requires you to dl and unzip a few files to your PC and run maybe 10 or 12 commands in a terminal. Very easy.

Seems like even a year later the best method to root the mytouch 4g is downgrading. I can see why people hate HTC phones
