new HTC Hero on 1.5 how to update to 2.1? - Hero CDMA General

I have been searching forums since morning but I haven't been able to figure out how to update to 2.1 and still have root access. There is no OTA available on the phone.
Should I download the RUU exe from sprint's website and update to 2.1? I hear that 2.1 root is not possible after that.
Can anyone guide me in the right direction please?
thanks..

If you want to root now, DON'T update to 2.1. Get the fresh kitchen and root with that.

HeroMeng, thanks for the reply. could you tell me where do I get kitchen from?

and I think I need to mention it is a CDMA HTC Hero on Sprint

You can download the kitchen right here. It only works on Windows, so keep that in mind. Once you download the kitchen, tap the Rooter tab. Check none of the boxes, and press "root" (or something like that).

Yeah, that's fine. So is everyone's in this section

so I cant get 2.1 on this thing yet ? Kitchen will install a custom 1.5 ROM on it. I managed to read through another forum thread and root the phone. So now I have root on 1.5. I understand that the unrevoked.com root for androind 2.1 wont work after the OTA update. I am beginning to get a little confused. Can I update the phone to RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.20.651.1_signed_test Firmware, as it has a built in ROOT ACCESS source link: here though I cant seem to find the download link for 2.20.651.1
sorry if the message is getting convoluted...

Easiest way is to Root with 1.5 using a guide in the Android Dev Section. I did it to 5 CDMA Heros with no prob whatsoever.
And by the way, 2.1 RUU has been rooted.. Search for it in the Dev Section.. (Should be right there on the first page...
Once you are rooted, if you want Something thats the official one, but much better, I recommend DamageControl 2.09 or Fresh 2.1

I have root on 1.5 now, I can install Fresh 2.1 using the instructions here ?

Yes. Yes you can.

done deal, running 2.1-fresh. Also updated the baseband to 2.42.01.04.27... would I have to root again or is it already rooted? Set CPU seems to just give me a black screen and the instructions on the set CPU site is not helping...

To get SetCPU, just flash GoDmOdE kernel, you can find it here.

ah I figured it out, the reason for the black screen. For some reason if USB Debugging is not enabled, su wont work. Once I enabled USB Debugging, su works just fine...

Also you need the kernel I posted above or it won't overclock. Over and underclocking needs a special kernel.

a little confused
Heromeng, I'm a little confused. I run a non Sprint hero and some of the forums say fresh kitchen is for Sprint hero's only and others say all hero's. Please dial me in bud. I really want root but don't want to go the Sprint run way. I live in Alaska and my carrier is ACS. Thanks bud.

You can't root with the fresh kitchen. You need to go through a little more steps then Sprint heroes.
Use this guide to root your hero.

HeroMeng, you rock for gettin right back to me! I've posted questions elsewhereover a month ago and still not heard back. I have read that guide before but didn't want to follow the wrong one and be left with a nice pretty brick. I've read how you help peers and noobs like me and appreciate that. Well I need to fond a Kingston or PNY sd card, I've tried to make a goldcard with 3 different sandisks and they would not take. I know I'm asking big here bit of you could point me in the direction of a good solid reliable ROM that doesn't need to be tweaked to fit my phone and any other advice/guides that would seriously help a brotha out I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks again bud.

Sprint Hero rooted, now what?

Sorry if there is a list or thread about this already. I am pretty new to the Android OS and I'm wondering what's the next thing to try with this phone.. I have rooted the phone (tested with screen print utility), now I'm just wondering what else I can do with this rooted beast.

Well, did you flash a recovery image?
I am going to bit the bait...First of all I know nothing about android, what a recovery image is or for, or such.
Anyways, I followed directions, and believe I have flashed a recovery...how can I tell? this is what I followed.

Well, if you didnt receive any errors then just type in reboot recovery in adb shell or shut the phone off and then hold in the home button and the power button. The phone should reboot with the htc logo and then it will load recovery. Once in recovery you can do a nandroid backup which will create a complete image of the phone. This is good in case anything goes wrong with any future changes. You can also partition the sd card to prepare it for apps2sd. And finally when roms are created you can flash the new roms with the recovery image.

Thor, there's a number of threads that talk about rooting now.
There's a step by step guide in this forum, and in the android development section of the hero area on the forums there's another that talks about the "one click" method that's been setup for us (flashrec). If you go to theunlockr.com ( http://theunlockr.com/2009/11/07/how-to-root-your-cdma-htc-hero-sprint-verizon/ ) and follow instructions there, it will also walk you through it.
It can take a moment but taking the time to do a bunch of research and looking around at both the past GSM hero rooting as well as the new CDMA rooting will ultimately answer a lot of questions that might otherwise come up.
I'm assuming wifi tethering does not yet work on the rooted CDMA Hero.

I think there is an app for changing led colors. As for new roms, I am working on one. I am brand new to rom development so I may be quitting that side of things soon but we will have to see. I am basically just trying to merge the CDMA parts of our hero with Modaco's GSM hero rom. If I can do that then maybe I can port other things. Like I said, we'll see.
yea i just rooted my hero im still trying to get app2sd to work do you happen to know what app it is?
can someone see if the setcpu or overclock widget works?
yea they work as far as i know i downloaded them and it all works so yea

Loaded 2.1 Rooted/Not any more

Just curious how many people loaded the 2.1 Update and have now lost root. How many of you loaded a variant of the Official 2.1 and still have root?
Anyone still on 1.5?
Currently still running AOSP 1.6, but going to hop over to Darchdroid, once Drachstar has fixed a few minor issues.

I flashed Fresh 2.1.1 on Monday. It's based off the leaked Sprint 2.1. Works great. I have root.
I'm on Regaw's latest ROM. Running smooth and skippy.

Do you have superuser whitelist installed? The only way to lose root is to flash the official HTC/Sprint RUU. Es was updated in 2.1, so it may just be a difference in version. I don't believe Es will request root anyway, try downloading Root Explorer. The quickest way to check if you have root is to run a terminal emulator and type su.

Could be worse. Those 11 could have started threads *****ing and moaning as to why they don't have root and for someone to fix it now.
I only recall one thread asking about root but wasn't complaining.
UR so funny.
I took the plunge when the first leak came out after seeing ALL the posts about what if and why for's.
I stated then that I would run the RUU and then try to root.
I tried three (3) ways and it didn't work.
I posted the results HUGE and big for those asking why and when.
I took one for the TEAM so to speak and am willing to wait for a new root without crying about it.
Push comes to shove I buy a new phone if I need it that bad.
So the number of 11 doesn't really seem all that out of line as others did in fact run the RUU before anyone made an effort to actually attempt it and have verifiable results.

Okay this is hard for some people to understand but if you got two phones all to yourself and you don't care what happens to one. It would be of great benefit to the community if you leave one unrooted so when someone needs a beta tester to test whether or not a new root procedure works I'm here to help them beta test the procedure. Plus I wanted to test a couple things out that could only be done if I flashed the 2.1 ruu not to be confused with rom.

Un-Root my Hero

I need to take my Hero back to factory specs because I'm taking it into a sprint store tomorrow. What all do I need to do... should I just flash my original rom back on there or can I download a rom from htc and it will clear everything? I understand I need to flash a new recovery image too.
Thanks

also kinda off topic but do i have to be rooted to make nanoid backup. i would also like to have that before i root.

Yes you can re-root after running the .5 RUU
the original rom is contained in the RUU program linked above
You don't have to be rooted to make a nandroid backup, though you do need to flash a custom recovery image. Being rooted means that you basically have administrator access on your phone, can run things like wifi tether and can overwrite the /system/ folder. A recovery image is a little different than that...
ok thanks, i know root is just admin, but a lot of root guides have you flash a recovery image, by doing that you replace the original recovery image? the one that takes you back to factory reset? thats what im not sure about and im really nervous about changing that and messing it up and bricking my device, thought one forum said its almost imposable to brick.
ok so i have that RUU and another one i download. do i just run it or do i need to have a specific program on my pc?
i know i need to Google it and just search the forums but i don't have a lot of time on my hands right now.
If you're planning on going back to root, don't run the .6 RUU. I don't think it's rootable. At least that was the case when it came out. .5 IS rootable.

I am still a little confused on what I need to do with the RUU.exe and or what it dose. I have been searching the forums but there is not a Good sticky or wiki about it, its only the definition. sorry I am such a noob and thanks for the help but i just want to clarify that .6 stands for 1.6 or donut?
-Thanks for helping the noob!!!
2.27.651.5 is the original Hero update.
2.27.651.6 is the update that was released solely to disable the ability to root.
The RUU for each was released by Sprint/HTC and flashed your phone from 1.5 to 2.whatever.
If you root, then you can run any of these to revert back to the stock Sprint image. If you chose to go to 2.27.651.6 then the only way to re-root would be to flash back to 2.27.651.5 which would only be a pain in the bum.
Since 2.27.651.6 gives you nothing but the inability to root then it only makes sense to revert to .5.
If this makes no sense to you...feel free to give up on rooting altogether. If it does then good luck.
BTW I only figured out how to root on Monday so these forums are most excellent..if you take the time to search through them.
Thanks its starting to make sense, right now I'm software 2.1 update 1 or 2.6 so i just have to go back to 2.5 . once i have more time i will thanks for the explanation! yes this site is the best and yes i need to search more.

I believe you need to be rooted in order for this to work. If you are on just froyo, I dont think it will work.
I have rooted it for a while now. Going back to 2.1? Really?
This happened to me as well. After searching the answer was to go to an older version of wifi tether.
What worked for me was the pre11 apk in the link below.

Pre15 works fine with froyo. Maybe you could try getting the latest version and installing it. I know this seems like a crazy idea, but how about you give it a go anyhow.
I've tried many different versions, including the most recent one, & no luck, I think that it could be some of my settings. Any ideas?
One thing I just remember, when on 2.1 it asked me for the superuser permission, now it hasn't. Could that be it? How do I give the permission without asking for it?

The above link shows the download and corresponding version that you should use for Epic. I used the lastest version pre15, and it works fine on my 2.2.1 froyo DK28 firmware.

That's my guess but not sure. one way to check if you lost your root is:
On your phone,
1. go to market, download and install Terminal Emulator
2. run Terminal, then at the prompt line, type "su" (don't include quotation marks) and then hit enter on keyboard
3. if the system says "su not found", that means you lost your root
This may be my stupid way to verify my rooting status. Other experienced users may have better way to do it

[Edit]: I'm a dummy I didn't have the debugging set...I got everything back to normal!! Thanks guys!

Rooting my Hero seemed easy, at first...

As easy as hacking psp, but then i broke the unwritten rule, i let my phone update a month ago (it said 2.2....so) which took me from the what seemed easy process of rooting a phone at 2.1 to the hard one of 2.1 update1...
downgrading back to 2.1 seemed liked a plan right cause
Code:
unrevoked.com/m
that should work then... i think and its seems almost to easy, but i just cant wrap man head around downgrading.......
I also found a easy way of doing it with the radio but my baseband version is also to high (at least from what Ive read 2 42 02 10 29)
All the stickys ive found seem to be out of date, and thats seems the case every where, i was going to use my update to get a evo instead, being new if i dont let it update it should be easy to root, but i hear after 1/30 you got to pay more, i not sure if thats counts if i activate the phone before that date tho...
so now im stuck and asking for help, somewhere to start would be mucho great. ty in advance.
Ummm......I'm lost here brother. The tutorials here work, even for the lastest update. I just did another one yesterday for a friend. Which one's have you tried?
Well see i honesly havent tried much, just been doing my homework trying to see what works, what dont, if you say these tuts are on point ill start puting everything ive gathered together and start, ill use this topic if i encounter any problems.
just alot to take in, all in one night new terms and all that...
Edit:Ok this tut http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
says if i dont have 2.27.651.5 in his case 2.27.651.6 (i have 2 32 651 2) i need to downgrade with the ruu the thread provides, since it dosent mention my build number, im unsure if it matters, going to download ruu as i dont see how it will hurt so.
any advice?
Run the "One click root apk" in the themes and apps forum. Not the universal root cause that gives people problems.
One click root apk will root whatever sprint update your on. Its super easy
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
.... that was all a little to easy...... well it worked i guess, wireless tether here i come, anything else i need to know?
Edit: so really the only reason i did this was for the wireless tether, my phone is the only internet i have so i hope it was worth it... but what else can/ should i do with it.... im unsur, can i get true android 2.2, and roms they what an OS, and whats froyo? kinda in over man head lol but i keep getting myself deeper...
well i will reccomend AOSP 0.9.8 it is very good rom....fast and stable...
make yourself a nand back up(you can use Rom manager from the market) wipe...flash and you are ready...
if you dont like it..you got the back up....so you can restore whatever you are running now....

told you it was super easy, your welcome. You can hit the thanks button if you want
as far as roms yes you want a custom one. yes you can get 2.2, it comes in two flavors, CM6 and AOSP. CM6 allows for lots of customizing. AOSP is the fastest rom you can download for this phone right now with everything working. Personally I would recommend AOSP. If you want to switch later you can(you probably will cause everyone does, its an addiction.)
you need to flash a custom recovery to do custom roms. easiest way to do that is download Rom manager from the market and use it to flash the clockwork mod recovery.
and Froyo is 2.2, Gingerbread is 2.3, and Eclair is 2.1.

if you cant find the answer there, check the sticky at the top of the development forum.

If you still cant figure it out, PM me and I'll see if I can simplify it for you.
If after all that, and only after all that, you still don't have an answer. Make a thread in the Q and A forum and only that forum. And you shall find an answer.

I just used z4root to root my Hero and it worked fine using the newest version (1.3 I believe) and the Permanent Root option. The only hiccup that I ran into is that z4root seemed to have gotten stuck on the "Rebooting" screen. I had let it run for about 20 min and hit the Home button then went to applications and found that SuperUser was installed and the phone is actually rooted. Been able to install ROM Manager and use Titanium Backup to remove a bunch of the Sprint and HTC apps.
