Google Voice not receiving texts and vm (4g) - Nexus S General

Just switched to the Nexus 4g and loving it. The only issue I'm having is now texts and voicemails are not coming through to the GV app or online, only the stock messaging. Anyone else having this problem? I can initiate texts through the GV app and the browser, but that's it.
I tried clearing the data and reinstalling. Nothing. When I go to voicemail under settings, Google Voice is not listed as a choice.

How do you have your number setup. Is it ported? I would start with checking your online settings, but more information is needed.

Also, when you call VM, are you getting Sprint's VM or are you getting GV Voice mail? That's another good place to start to see if you're fully ported over.

Dial *28 and your google voice area code and number then hit send. Did you set up conditional call forwarding? There might also be a setting in calls section to select voicemail. Carrier or google voice.
Personally, I would stay away from that porting your number can of worms. To me it's more trouble than it's worth. There's really not much or any difference between the old way of having them separate. You have more control if you use the old way. You also don't have that mms snafu like you would if you integrated.
I just read your post again. Something isn't set up right if there isn't a choice. I think I know. Go to the market and download google voice again and install it on top of itself. Make sure you are logged out of gv on your phone before doing this. I think updating breaks integration and let's you use gv the old fashioned way.

I'm looking and I don't see anything talking about google voice setup.

Google Voicemail problem

I use Google Voice for my voicemail. I have a colleague who does the same, with her Blackberry. We both are on Sprint.
Our calls aren't going to voicemail. I went into Google Voice on my desktop and see that my last voicemail was 12-23. I had my phone with me over the holidays and was on vacation for a week, so not getting a voicemail didn't really stand out.
When I try today, I get this message "We could not complete your call. Please try again."
Any ideas on where I can look before I give them a call? I am running Ultimate Droid and was sure if they would ask questions about my phone being rooted or instruct me to go to certain menus that may or may not be different.
I could get her to call later tonight if it is a Sprint thing but wanted to see if one of you smart folks might have a quick answer.

I also run UD2.5 and I have no problems using Google Voice as my voicemail provider. So you can probably rule out Sprint as being the problem.
You do need to make sure that Google Voice is set as your voicemail provider. Go into settings > Call Settings > Voicemail Service.
It should say Google Voice there. If it says My Carrier. That may be your problem.
If that says Google Voice, then you know you are least half way there. On your computer, log in to your google voice account, and click on settings in the top right corner. It should show your cell phone number as a forwarding number. Then to the right, it should say "deactivate Google Voicemail on this phone?"
If it says "Active Google voicemail on this phone?", then you haven't activated it yet. Click the hyperlink and it should give you a short code to dial on your phone to set up Gvoice as your VM provider.
If it says "deactivate" and you still aren't getting it to leave VM's. Then try clicking "deactivate", then activate again. It should walk you through the set up again.
Last but not least, you can check to see if it is initialized as your voicemail by calling your own cell phone number from your own phone. Gvoice should recognize this and take you into your Gvoice mailbox.
I hope at least one of those steps works. If not, you can try to PM me with your results, I don't know how much more I could help, but I don't mind if you do.

Did you actually try dialing the *28 followed by your google number just to reactivate conditional call forwarding?

I still get Sprint voicemail when I call myself and I get 'Call can not be completed as dialed' when I call from my wife's phone.

That's weird, so you did try it WITH your google number? I'm not sure why it would give you a different number. You also logged into google voice with the proper gmail address? If you go to settings in google voice does it show the proper phone numbers? Under "this phones number" is your cell number and under google number you see your actual google number? This is a really weird situation.
You can call Sprint and have them completely disable voicemail on your account but I don't think that will actually help.

I did. I am not having much luck with Google this week. Can't purchase Root Explorer because Google checkout says my zip code is bad (apparently a known issue that only effects some merchants with some customers).
Anyway. When you call your google number from a different phone what SHOULD it do? From my wife's phone, it goes straight to my Inbox. That sound right? I have only used gvoice for voicemail and not a number I use for any calls, in or out.

It will only go right to the inbox if you have it set up that way. Of course calling your google number should go to Your inbox not your wifes, unless her account is the one it is associated with. Basically when somebody calls your google number it will ring whatever phones you have it set to forward to. If you have forwarding off then it will go straight to voicemail. If indeed calling your google number goes to your wifes inbox then her gmail address is the one associated with that account. Thus you will have to go into google voice app and log out with your gmail and log in with hers. If you need more help I can be found on yahoo chat under ifly4vamerica, might be easier to help you through this issue.
Its got to be something stupid.... Probably you didnt set something up right. I have 2 google voice numbers one for business.. and one for my voicemail...
I have Never had a problem unless I didn't
1. *28 google voice number ( have to do this after flashing anything or restoring anything)
2. Did not refresh the gv app on my phone. ( after flashing or restoring)
3. Make sure you gmail accts are synced... that way you will get a transcript of the vmail and a link to audio
Its gotta be a miss step somewhere.
I have no probs as long as i do all these things. I flash crap on my phone all the time.

I have tried to start over a few times and each time I click Activate in the Settings menu it gives me a two step process: 1) Type this number from your cell phone *28{followed by a number that is NOT my Google number}. 2) Press Send.
This doesn't work. So I hit *38 to try and clear it back out (just in case).
I also get directed to that same *28 number when I go through the Call Settings>Voicemail>Voicemail Settings menu on my phone. It refers to it as a carrier configuration. I have GV selected as the carrier in the menu above.
I have also tried to use my Google number after the *28, which is apparently what you are supposed to do and yet again it doesn't work.
When you guys click activate on the GV Menu page does it suggest *28 with your g-number or something different?
What is really bugging me about this crap is that I have been using GV on multiple phones for more than a year (on the EVO since Aug) with no hiccups and it "breaks" out of the blue when I made no other changes to my phone or service.
I did try Sprint last night and the rep there said he fixed it but when I got off the phone and tested it, same result and I decided to go to bed as I value my TV and I was about to throw my phone through it. Gonna try and see if a different rep know more.

Still a little confused here but now have it working. Still interested in the 'Why' side of things in case it were to happen again. Was on with a Sprint rep, for over an hour, who seemed to know his stuff and was a GV user himself.
My tries last night were from home where I use an Airrave (older model) for coverage. My tries this morning while talking to him were from my office where the signal is bad. On a couple of occasions I got connected to Verizon. There wasn't a roaming icon on my phone. Maybe Ultimate Droid doesn't show the icon? Not sure there.
He felt like the issue was connecting with Sprint and said that while the Airrave SHOULD work it could still be part of the problem. We finally stopped and he recommended I go to a Service Center, where we would be guaranteed to have good coverage and try again.
After we hung up, I downloaded the Stock 3.70 Rom and wiped everything (data x 3, cache and davlik) and flashed the new stock Rom. I wasn't expecting much as it smelled like a system thing with forwarding calls from Sprint to Google.
In Menu>Settings>Call>Voicemail Service I noticed I no longer had the option to choose Google Voice. I downloaded the GV app. I then went outside, stood on one leg with my socks off and my shirt unbuttoned to make sure I had a good signal, and followed the app's suggested setup, which included the *28 with the number that is NOT my GV number. Now it works.
Should I be worried about restoring my nand backup I did before the wipe? I'm thinking no but I also didn't think the reflash of the Stock would work. I am guessing the unawared roaming was prbly the biggest culprit.

[GUIDE] How to get "classic" google visual vm back after sprint integration

Ok so I orginally thought the idea of GV integration with sprint was awesome...after fiddling with it. I was very disappointed.
The problems I had with it were...I dont want to use my GV number as my primary. I dont want to change my GV number to my cell number. Each option had issues that I felt needed to be addressed. Changing my GV number to my cell made it to where txt would be comming into my phone via gv app. Yes there is a work around but ita annoying and I dont want my text stored on line. I also didnt want to change my gv number, this to me sounds like it could be a bad idea at some point in time, and cause other issues. So I set out how to get classic google voice back with the new app that will not let you just use it for vm heres how i did it, now I know this affects the Nexus S 4G with the version of GV they include...however the market version does seem to be different.
Option 1 (For Rooted Phones)
1) Use Titanium backup or some other root explorer to delete the stock voice apk, then reboot recovery and wipe dalvik
2) Once back inside the rom download voice from the market as that version doesnt seem to suffer from the ****ty options that are stock on the phone
Option 2 (The proper way for rooted and non rooted phones)
1) Launch GV app on phone, and sign in, when it ask choose to change your gv number to your cell number.
2) Get annoyed and go get a shot of vodka, and wait about 15 minutes (honestly because you wont be able to change it back for at least 15 minutes.)
3) Login to gv on the web (voice.google.com)
4) once in there click the gear, and pick voice settings. Under the phone area choose to disable the sprint port number (your google voice number). It will disable and revert back to your old gv number
5) Where you mobile number is at you should see enable google voice mail for this line. Click that, and follow the instructions.
6) Click on voice mail and text uncheck email message and send sms.
7) on your phone open gv, goto more then settings make sure it says. Making calls do not use gv to make calls. make sure this phones number is your actual mobile number adjust sync options as you wish and make sure My gv number is indeed your gv number.
8) DO NOT SIGN OUT OF THE APP (Im not sure what will happen but my guess is it will break)
9) Edit your voice mail settings under call settings and change your vm settings to GV from "My Carrier" and make sure your GV number is in there.
Options: Now if you dont want to use the gv app at all you can have gv send you an sms or an email instead or manually check your voice mail by phone.

I kinda did this a different way but not as elegant. I used root manager to remove google voice. I might have used root manager to remove the data too but I can't recall. I rebooted. Then I tried downloading google voice again. I think it installed. I tried running it and there was a problem. I uninstalled it. Then installed it again. That must have flushed out all the references to the program that I missed. Ran the program, signed in, chose let me choose to use google voice for every call. Then I clicked the link for conditional call forwarding and hit send. It's *28(google voice number with area code) then send. After that I hit back until I got back to the gv setup. I chose skip then next then I think I was done. It's working now the old way. Separate numbers and google voice for voicemail.

Can you explain what this workaround is? I'm not too thrilled with how the GV app handles SMS either.
The most annoying thing about this is the app options seems useless for configuration purposes. You really have to configure this through the web to work right.
After I first set it up and tested a voice mail I got
An email, an MMS, and a notification bar alert from GVM app itself even though in the app I had the first two disabled.. Finally got it down to just a notification bar alert from the GVM app only after configuring through the web. It's stupid that by default it lets you know THREE different ways you have a damn voice mail.

My texts come to my phone just as they are supposed to and since I turned off notifications in GV app I don't get notifications in the app. I get emails and texts telling me of voice messages just like before. Yes the app still receives text messages and stores them online, but I see this as a plus since txt is mainly how I communicate and my job has me working in a lot of places with internet access but no cell coverage. win win in my book.
To get texts sent to your phone you have to check the little box in your settings that says "Receive text messages on this phone (mobile phones only)"
It took me a while to messing around to get everything set up, but I'm liking it now.
I use option 2 (GV number in place of cell number). It works flawlessly. I have had no issues. For me this was easy because I made people use my GV # as my primary number years ago. It just takes a little time an patience getting all your friends and family to use the GV #, but once its done its the best move you'll ever make.

It doesn't have to handle sms. Check that little checkbox and the sms will be delivered to your phone like they were before. Then go into GV app and turn off notifications.
Nice guide. Well since my Nexus is stock and I couldn't stand how broken gv and sprint are together I wanted it to go back to go it was.
That is to say, texts and voicemails come through notifications by the Google voice app and texts sent to my mobile number come through the default messaging app. That's how its supposed to be.
It's quite easy to do, in settings for Google voice in your phone turn off all notifications and inbox synchronization. Basically nothing should be checked. Then in the web go to your Google voice settings and under phones next to your mobile number click on "disable Google voice on your sprint phone".
That should make everything normal again. Hope that helps. I don't see the point of what sprint and Google were trying to do here. The Google voice app works just fine the way it is. Don't mess with a good thing.

After rooting around for the setting mentioned I found it.
1. Log in to Google Voice online
2. Click on the little gear in the upper right hand corner to access Options
3. Click on Voice Settings
4. On the Phones tab under "Forward calls to" click on the Edit button for your Google Voice enabled mobile phone
5. Where it says "Text Settings" check the box for "Receive text messages on this phone (mobile phones only)"
This should send texts to your phones SMS app rather than through the Google Voice app.
Hope this saves others some time searching.
My biggest pet peeves were:
1. Incoming messages from the same sender would sometimes create multiple threads inside of Google Voice.
2. SMS messages received from contacts that were not stored in Google account (i.e. corporate account) would commonly show up from a telephone number versus a name.
3. SMS messages initiated from Google Voice would not show up as threads until they were responded to.
4. Messaging application was rendered useless bloatware.
5. I don't want/need Google Voice to archive 300 - 500 text messages a day.
The entire thing is a cluster____.... I've never quite seen something so utterly stupidly organized and launched like this..
How long does it take it so when someone calls my number they hear my Sprint voicemail message instead? I just called my number and it's still going to the Google voice system. It's not activated just checked as my mobile phone but NOT intergrated anymore.

Brotha -I was about to go insane out of my mind -and then I read this. Thanks. I thought I looked at every possible setting -but there is always a button that eludes you.
Then I had to stop the double notifications bc I was getting my text message on my phone and my text in google voice. So on my phone in GV settings I Un-checked "Inbox notifications"
I was really excited about GV integration - now I wish that Sprint would have left it alone. It really is a big mess to get it to do what you want.

Thanks for the info, this is exactly what I was looking for.
I hope Sprint and Google work something out with this.. If XDA members are scratching their heads how to make this work like they want imagine how a regular novice user must feel.
The Sprint/Google intergration and its current method of "configuring" (ie dice rolling) reminds of some half assed business solution some unknown outside firm was paid to write.
I didn't have to root or uninstall. Just download google voice from the market and let it overwrite the existing installation.

Yeah I just plain old updated and the settings went back to the old ones.

Edge 7 and Google Voice

I am coming from a LG G3 to the Galaxy S7 Edge. I had Google Voice working just fine on my G3. I could text/call from my Google Voice number and also my voicemails were automatically sent to Google Voice instead of Verizon.
I installed Google Voice on the Edge and it gave me the normal your carrier doesn't support automatic configuration. On my G3, I just clicked through the configure screens and selected Google Voice and everything worked fine. If I do that on my Edge it doesn't work. When I call my number, it says voicemail hasn't been set up for the phone number instead of forwarding to google voice.
I did the manual process of forwarding calls to Google Voice, *71{phonenumbertotransferto}, *90{phonenumbertotransferto} and *92{phonenumbertotransferto} and it works but it rings 15 times first. This isn't ideal.
Also when I try to use Google Voice to call a number, it looks like it is working but it is calling from my verizon number instead of my Google Voice number.
Anyone have ideas on how to get this to work correctly?
**Update**
I was able to get the time until Google Voicemail picks up shortened by turning on Do Not Disturb in Google Voice settings. This is a work around for me since I don't have people calling me on my Google Voice number. If I did, this wouldn't be an option. Still not able to make calls with Google Voice from my phone though.
May I ask first, why are you still using the defunct Google Voice app? Why haven't you simply switched over to Hangouts?
I ask because Hangouts has everything you have asked for in this post. I use Hangouts and actually 2 Google numbers attached to my phone thru 2 separate Google accounts. This phone has the call forward feature built into the phone settings so you don't even need to dial *71,etc. Just go into phone settings and tell it which number you want to forward your calls to when they are unanswered.
To stop it from ringing 15 times before your call transfers finally to your Google voice mail, you have to stop the call from "bouncing" around I call it. In your google voice settings (easiest to see on your computer)... You probably have both "Forward calls to Google Chat" AND "Work" (or Home or whatever you call your phone you forward your calls to).
You need to uncheck forward calls to Google chat. That will stop the crazy number of rings before it transfers to voicemail. The only other way I know is how you suggested and use Do Not Disturb.
Lastly, again if you use Hangouts, it actually has a dialer app that goes along with it that you can use to dial out just as normal whenever you want to use your google number to dial out. I use it often. It works great.

EDIT: Actually I think the ring problem is fixed with changing the call screening feature in your voice settings (again easiest seen by visiting Google voice settings via your computer). I'm pretty sure I turned on call screening to correct that issue. Been so long since I've messed with the setting LOL. But if you research call screening it actually changes how the system works somewhat, including answering calls, etc. I'm pretty sure that's how I did it. Again sorry for the long winded post.

Can you explain what you mean by "defunct Google Voice app"?
I use GV to access my mobile voicemail messages, have done so for years...are you saying I should uninstall it and I can use Hangouts to view/listen to my voicemails?
When I go into GV I can see a list of current/previous voicemail messages. In Hangouts I don't see the list of voicemails that I see in the GV app...can you explain a little more how Hangouts can replace GV, and where/how I can get to my voicemails from Hangouts?

Yeah I mean Hangouts has completely replaced Google Voice.
In fact, I haven't used GV since Hangouts came out. I still see the same voicemails I always have. Only now you can see everything that comes into Hangouts all in one place. You still can set up notifications in hangouts when someone leaves you a voicemail, just like in the old GV app. And you can see the transcribed message right there in Hangouts. You can either read it, or hit the play button and hear out loud. I prefer mostly to play them out loud, because a lot of the time Google's auto transcription service is pretty bad, especially with foreign accents.
In Hangouts, you have 3 screens to swipe thru to the left or right. The furthest left is the contacts/settings/etc. The middle is the screen where you would see any voicemail/ text messages. And the furthest right screen is the Hangouts Dialer (you do need to download the dialer app separate in the play store).
Try this. Delete your GV app. Go to the play store and download Hangouts and Hangouts Dialer. Then setup Hangouts. Hangouts dialers will automatically setup when you setup Hangouts. Add your Google account when you set up, and you should be all set. Then of course change your settings how you like. See if it works for you. I personally don't know anyone who uses GV app anymore. Even Google on the play store says its no longer supported.
But yes, when Hangouts came out, it was a COMPLETE replacement for Google Voice app. It's really awesome if you take advantage of all its features.

I should also say this. Hangouts will ask you if you want to make it your default SMS texting app and have all your texts go thru Hangouts. I personally don't do that, but you can. I don't do it only because I don't like the look of hangouts enough to use it all the time for texting. That's just a personal thing. I like to use the stock messaging app that I can keep themed like the rest of the phone from the Samsung theme store. But you can indeed use hangouts as your entire texting/messaging/voicemail platform and it will perform beautifully.
IF you only want to use a separate texting app, just make sure you keep that in mind.

I do Google voice for my number and use hangouts which I personally don't much like. Is there a messaging app that can accept my GV number other than the stock GV and hangouts apps? I looked a few phones ago and nothing existed at the time to handle GV/hangouts messages.
Don't hold me to this because I haven't used them personally, but I believe you can use something like Groove IP. And I think there's an app on the play store called "Phone for Google Voice". But again I've never used them so I can't say for sure. Hangouts has always filled the void that I needed it to. It's not at all perfect, but Google hardly ever makes a perfect app lol.

Hangouts for calls has a very poor echo that everyone I talk to complains about, it heats the phone up extremely fast and kills battery, and if you are in a weak coverage area calls get dropped.
I'm using the Google Voice app fine on my S7 Edge to make and receive calls. Of course I use Hangouts for texting and receiving voicemails though.
I've done that for years. Was just hoping for an alternative messaging app. I've had the same GV number since the first galaxy S lol.

I don't call out much on my GV number, so i use hangouts when I do.
That being said, you indeed can get other apps... Or at least used to be able to, that would let you dial out with your GV number. Phone+ comes to mind, Groove IP like I mentioned before, and others. Some are just app setups that will allow you to pick contacts that auto dial out on your GV number. I think it's Phone+ that does something like that. I just saw a thread over in the regular S7 forums where people were having some of the same issues. Apparently when HD calling was enabled a while ago, it maybe helped to make it harder for all who used Google Voice. I see it looks like it started back on the S6 or S5. This is my first new phone since my Note 3 so go figure lol....

As far as the OP goes, I am working through the same issues with voicemail.
*edit, based on what I'm seeing, the only way to reduce the rings on Verizon's end is to call customer support and request it. I'll try it when I have time and update. Verizon customer service was able to shorten the ring time (I asked for 15 seconds from 30). Everything is working fine for me, including calling out from the GV number using the stock Samsung dialer, so I'm not sure what your issue is there. In GV, did you set the "make calls as" setting to use the GV number? Alternatively using the Hangouts dialer from the Hangouts app should work also.

I was completely unaware that calling and asking for shortening of the unanswered ring time still worked. Thanks for that info, good to know. I thought that option was long gone.

WiFi Calling Was my Culprit
So despite everyone telling the OP that Google Voice sucks, I still think it's functionality if FAR preferable to Hangouts. Not only is the interface much cleaner, but the Chrome extension on desktop is much more conducive to texting and voicemail management. In addition, it is totally integrated with Google Contact management, which is a plus.
I switched to a Galaxy S7 Edge yesterday and had setup issues with Voice. Finally after a conference call with Sprint and Google support (Google was just kind enough to help, since Google offers no live support for free apps), we found out that it is indeed WiFi Calling that is the culprit in Voice setup. However, it's not enough to simply uninstall the native app and turn off WiFi Calling, you have to go into the WiFi Calling settings and disable the service completely. For me that was at the bottom of the 9-1-1 location settings page. After disabling WiFi Calling, my profile automatically updated, I uninstalled Google Voice and reinstalled, and setup was a total breeze, everything was right with the world, and I can continue using Hangouts as it should be, to share GIFs with my friends and talk trash about Fantasy Football.
I hope this helps anyone with this issue, the Sprint Technical Support guy said he'd run across it yesterday and had no idea what to do with the issue until now.

I don't think anyone told him the GV app sucked. Originally I was asking him why he was still using the GV app, just to get an idea of his issues and how to better help the situation. In particular, I just said it was defunct, aka antiquated....and it is. It still has its uses as a legacy app, or as a stand alone app in circumstances, but for the most part, it's still around for legacy support. Up until recently, Google even listed it this way on the play store.
The GV app still does one thing Hangouts won't do. Hangouts will only make wifi or voip calls. The GV app WILL call out from your GV number, but it will use cellular service and use your phone minutes. That's about the only reason I see to actually have the GV app still. Hangouts has every one of my contacts integrated just like any other app I have on my phone that does the same thing. Admittedly, Hangouts contacts view is really ugly lol.
As far as the PC side, I have Hangouts installed on my windows 10 laptop, and it rings beautifully every time I get a call or text, I can check voicemails, etc. All my contacts are integrated for both Gmail accounts that i can keep running simultaneously. It works quite well. I also have Google Voice chrome extensions. Everything works fine together.
The rest is just preference and style choice. I've never had issues with Hangouts. And I never really had issues with the Voice app before that. I've also not had the unfortunate bad luck of dealing with the setup problems everyone seems to be having. I have NOT however, set up wifi calling yet on my S7Edge, so my guess it that's why I'm not experiencing all the issues people are having with setup.

I'm on Sprint, but had the exact same experience. Been dealing with it for a few weeks. And this was the only solution.
As far as using Hangouts instead of the GV app- I can't get what you guys are describing to work. I have Hangouts installed, I installed the dialer, but nothing I do shows my voicemails. I only see the text messages and a call log. I'd be interested in another option to the GV app, which I think is adequate, but not great.

I ask because Hangouts has everything you have asked for in this post. I use Hangouts and actually 2 Google numbers attached to my phone thru 2 separate Google accounts. This phone has the call forward feature built into the phone settings so you don't even need to dial *71,etc. Just go into phone settings and tell it which number you want to forward your calls to when they are unanswered.
To stop it from ringing 15 times before your call transfers finally to your Google voice mail, you have to stop the call from "bouncing" around I call it. In your google voice settings (easiest to see on your computer)... You probably have both "Forward calls to Google Chat" AND "Work" (or Home or whatever you call your phone you forward your calls to).
You need to uncheck forward calls to Google chat. That will stop the crazy number of rings before it transfers to voicemail. The only other way I know is how you suggested and use Do Not Disturb.
Lastly, again if you use Hangouts, it actually has a dialer app that goes along with it that you can use to dial out just as normal whenever you want to use your google number to dial out. I use it often. It works great.

EDIT: Actually I think the ring problem is fixed with changing the call screening feature in your voice settings (again easiest seen by visiting Google voice settings via your computer). I'm pretty sure I turned on call screening to correct that issue. Been so long since I've messed with the setting LOL. But if you research call screening it actually changes how the system works somewhat, including answering calls, etc. I'm pretty sure that's how I did it. Again sorry for the long winded post.

I was using the GV app and I tried this setup but my calls and VM's don't show up in Hangouts. I can't seem to get them to show up.
I figured it out. You have to select this option in Hangouts.
As a follow up:
Working with a few Sprint techs got me this info. GV won't work if WiFi calling is set up or enabled. It doesn't matter if you turn it off. It has to be completely deactivated.
I've been using GV for many years, and never had a problem on other phones, even using WiFi Calling. This is obviously a s/w issue. Hopefully it can be remedied in a future update.

Dial *71 followed by your google voice number and follow the prompts to set up call forwarding.

Force activate Google Voicemail on your Pixel/XL

Edit: Perhaps using the word (Re)activate would clear some confusion. I chose to use 'Activate' since I had been unable to get my existing Google Voice account up and running on my Pixel from day one. These were the steps that I personally used, with Verizon as my carrier, to (Re)activate or "jump start" my existing Google Voice account to run on my Pixel. For me personally, this was the only thing that worked. And at the moment it seems to be working for others as well. As mentioned below, the full setup for Verizon may be different, and the full setup and "reactivation" for lack of a better word, is indeed different for other carriers, could be similar, I honestly don't know.
I'm on Verizon, but this should work for any carrier -
1. Go to Google Voice on PC, click the 'Settings' cog/hamburger icon
2. Under the 'Phones Tab' it will say 'Forwards calls to:' you should see your phone's phone number and under that click 'Edit'.
3. Click 'Show Advanced Settings' still under 'Phones Tab'.
4. Scroll down to 'Forwarding Options' and click 'Activate'.
5. Now you should have a pop-up window with instructions to call your GV number. Mine (Verizon) instructs me to add a *71 in front of my GV number -
*71555-555-5555 - then click send and follow the prompts when your phone rings.
6. Enjoy Google Voicemail again.

In addition to all this, here are some additional steps I had to take in order to get Google Voice to stick. I believe these instructions from this point on are Pixel specific, but please do not quote me on this -
Additional Steps (I took) to get Google Voice up and running on the Pixel (the following steps will be done from your phone)
1. Head to the Phone app, swipe over to Voicemail and approve Visual Voicemail.
2. Then head to GV app and go to Settings and check on Voicemail Display.
3. While still in GV, run through your Sync and Notifications and check what applies to you.
4. Then return to your Phone app (your voicemail may go a little crazy at this point due to syncing, mine does), go to Settings>Calls and turn off Video Calling and Voice Privacy.
5. Then go to your overall phone settings for the phone itself, and tap More>Cellular Network Settings and turn off Advanced Calling.
I think that is everything. If anyone has any additional input at all, that'd be helpful. Come to think of it, a per carrier set of instructions would be nice if anyone would like to help...just throwing this out there, if it already exists, a link would be nice.

I use GV as much as my regular number for incoming and outgoing phone calls. I also use each equally for texting, it depends on who it is. I use my real phone mostly for friends and family that have had my number before GV. I use GV for new contacts and business related stuff; the reason being I like to able to record business phone calls without an extra app, simply tap 4 during the call and it starts recording. And yes, I use GV for voicemail too, mainly due to transcripts and customization. I rarely have to listen to my vm, unless someone was drunk, then the transcripts are pretty bad...funny, but bad. Why do you ask?

Many people used GV to handle VVM on Verizon for the previous Nexus phones as it wasn't supported. However, VVM on Android 7.1+ is working with Verizon out of the box, as long as you have it enabled on your plan.

Ahh, no I only use GV. But I do use it with VVM on the Pixel. Actually, maybe you can help me with something which has only mildly bothered me, so I haven't dug too deep yet....does VVM provide a transcript like like GV does? Let's be honest, it really isn't all that visual. evobyte was asking this earlier as well.

I believe you need the Premium VVM from Verizon for that - I only have the basic (free) and it does not. I know that is a feature that puts GV ahead of VVM, but I found GV to not be very reliable when I was on my N5X.
This is a link to Google's support for GV. https://support.google.com/voice/answer/165656?hl=en If you click were it says additional help for Verizon customers you'll see you need to dial 3 numbers w/your GV # included (it forwards calls in 3 different types of situations). I did this and set to show visual messages in the phone app which basically gave GV its own tab. And, I don't have premium service from Vzn.
If you are having trouble configuring Google voicemail on Verizon, you can make the switch manually by dialing these three activation codes:
*71[Your Google Voice number]
*90[Your Google Voice number]
*92[Your Google Voice number]

no sprint visual voicemail app?

I got my PH-1 activated and just realizing there's no Voicemail app. When you get a voicemail notification, it dials into my voicemail. Is this because it's a near stock android, like the nexus and pixel? Is there anyway to get the Sprint Visual Voicemail app? I had it on my previous phone (Galaxy S4).

Get a Google Voice number and forward your phone to that VM.
You can get a text with the content of your VM transcribed.

Well it installs, but it had an error provisioning, but then I received a text messages saying it was provisioned. But it doesn't receive the voicemails.
Did you get it to work? And yes, I'm on Sprint.

I always hated Springs VVM app/service. Google Voice is way better. You have 2 options there: 1) setup conditional call forwarding or 2) integrate your Spring number to Google Voice.

Conditional call forwarding forwards unanswered calls to your Google Voice number, but doesn't ring -- instead goes to voicemail there. It's all seamless.
Integrating your Sprint number with Google Voice is nice, actually. The catch is you can't use Sprint's WiFi calling feature. You're not missing anything anyway and there are ways to use Google Voice over wifi too. When you integrate with Google Voice, you share the same number on both services. Make calls from your phone as normal, your computer, tablet, virtually anything with an internet connection. Same with texting. It's all synced, sort of... Texting via Voice is synced. Texting via SMS... well, Google Voice only keeps a record of received texts. Best part about Google Voice integration is it includes spam blocking for calls and texts. As in, fewer robo calls and fewer spoofed caller ID calls.
I disabled my Voice integration to try WiFi calling. I couldn't wait to go back. Without Voice, I got 2-3 robo calls per day. With Voice, I might get one a week. And I can handle my calls and texts at work from my PC if I have to, keeping my phone down and still looking productive.
You setup Google Voice integration within the Google Voice settings on a PC/web browser. You might have to chat/call Sprint support to remove Wifi calling from your account. If you tell them you're trying to setup Google Voice integration, good luck. 9/10 don't know it's a feature and the 1 that does barely knows what it does or how to set it up. If you get an error setting it up, it's 99% likely because wifi calling is enabled/on your account.

Yeah, same here... haven't figured out how to make it work yet!
I can't believe this is not more active, or that there isn't threads for Sprint & voicemail specifically. Obviously I have Sprint & the native phone app voicemail does not work. I got an email from Google voice support telling me Sprint deactivated my Google voice intergration, & that if I want to enable it I need to call Sprint. I've been on phone several times last couple of days going back & forth with Sprint & Google to no avail. When I go into legacy voice settings from a PC the "let Sprint work with voice" (however it's worded) button is not there. So I will call Sprint again & see if that wifi calling is enabled & if so I will have them disable it & go from there.
It just really is mind boggling that in 2018 this is even an issue for anyone. Especially when service like Sprint actually has an add for "BYOD" (bring your own device). They should have small print stating "if you don't want to get voicemail notifications"

Google removed integration of Voice with the dialer.
To get integration with the dialer you need an old version of Voice.
You need Google Voice build number 0.4.7.10.
You can download it from one of the archives.
Remove the current version of Voice.
Also make sure you turn off auto-update in the Google Play Store or you will lose the integration as soon as Voice update.
It's been a known issue for years.

I have Google Voice integration just fine with the most recent and previous versions of the app... Not sure why I'm so special.
Yeah I've been using it fine, then voice was kinda built into Hangouts & I would get them there. Because of that intergration in Hangouts I used that for my SMS & they always went through. I used Hangouts because when I'm at home I have literally no data, so I used wifi & just couldn't make calls. In the settings of Hangouts you could see settings for g voice. This still worked long after Hangouts did that auto prompt telling you Hangouts for SMS would no longer work & wanted you to install Google messages. But anyway I tried 4.7.1.0 & it gave me # to provision, I tried dialing it but I'm at home & the call just ended. So I'll have to retry next time I head out & get a data signal.

Let's be clear, there is integration and then there is integration with the dialer.
integration will allow you to get you VM via your GV account and number because your phone forwards to you GV number.
Dialer integration means you don't need to open the Voice app to check or see your VM.
The former works great. The latter is broken in more recent versions of the Voice app.
